For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: It's Obama's rubble now!
President Obama, in office a month longer than Bush was when 9/11 hit, now owns his presidency. Does he know it? He too stands on rubble, figuratively speaking—a collapsed economy, high and growing unemployment, two wars. Everyone knows what he's standing on. You can almost see the smoke rising around him. He's got a bullhorn in his hand every day. It's his now. He gets the credit and the blame. How do we know this? The American people are telling him. You can see it in the polls. That's what his falling poll numbers are about. "It's been almost a year, you own this. Fix it."

Although it isn't in Noonan's piece, Obama said a few days ago (paraphrasing): I'm cleaning up someone else's mess, and some people are complaining about the type of mop I'm using.
And my favorite, from some time ago, about not needing to hear from the people who caused the mess.

October 24, 2009 - 10:09 ET by DavartI'm not sure when Obama is going to grow up and put his big girl panties on, he is your typical whiny brat that wants credit for everything that works (which has been nothing) but he wants to blame everyone and anyone for things that do not, which is nearly everything he's done.
Obama will be blaming Bush until Nov 2012... but I think people are getting tired of it. I know I am but then I again I'm tired of waiting on that transparency, I'm still waiting to see those debates and hearings on CSPAN, waiting on that new age in bipartisanship .... waiting for he to live up to just one of his lofty promises, but I digress I should know that his failure to perform is likely Bush's fault.

October 24, 2009 - 17:22 ET by matthewdeanJon:
So many of us saw it coming.
Couple of real bad things to consider--- Though we KNEW it was not going to be good, we had absolutely NO IDEA it was going to be this BAD.
Even worse--- allowing for attrition through natural means in the voting bloc that ushered this man into office, and allowing for the possibility that the older voters/Independents who voted for him are now or will soon be aware that this is NOT the hope and change they were led to expect, 2012 may well still be a close run thing.
"How the hell can anyone be optimistic about it at this point?"
At this point in the game Jon, anyone I met who WAS optimistic would be someone I would be leery of. I would allow for the fact that if this person felt we were close to or already at the bottom, therefore the only direction left to go was up, that I could cut them some slack in that regard.
A couple more insights from and on my perspective:
1. I was in the Fire Service for many years. Fire Service personnel are very close to one another. When I was 26, my wife divorced me and took my son and daughter, ages 5 and 6 respectively, 2800 miles away. Damn near killed me. My best friend on the Department, much older, much more experienced and certainly much smarter, said "get up every morning and say to yourself, I ain't gonna let 'em bury me in this town".
I did, and they did'nt.
2. In forty-six and one-half years on the job, the last twenty as an Arson Investigator, I saw an ungodly amount of devastation in the lives of good, hard working, well meaning folks.
If the situation, bad as it was, had any kind of upside, that would be if no one had been killed or injured. I underlined, stressed, and re-stressed that point to those sitting in the ruins of their home.
"No one was hurt. You can replace ALL of these material things. NO ONE GOT PHYSICALLY HURT. The mental and emotional distress is hard and heavy, but at least you are HERE to deal with it. Get up tomorrow and press on."
So that is what I am saying to you Jon (and to myself as needed), get up, press on. Repeat as needed.
Be nice, do the best you can, and take no shit from no one.
Right-o, mate.

I think Peggy hit a few,
October 24, 2009 - 11:29 ET by BKeyserI think Peggy hit a few, but also missed a few:
It is never a good sign when the president gets folksy, dropping his
g's, because he is by nature not a folksy g-dropper but a coolly
calibrating intellectual who is always trying to guess, as most
politicians do, what normal people think. When Mr. Obama gets folksy he
isn't narrowing his distance from his audience but underlining it. He
shouldn't do this.
Does he come across as too weak? It is true, as the cliché has it, that
it's helpful for a president to be both revered and feared. But this
president is not weak, that's not his problem. He willed himself into
the presidency with an adroit reading of the lay of the land, brought
together and dominated all the constituent pieces of victory, showed
and shows impressive self-discipline, seems in general to stick to a
course once he's chosen it, though arguably especially when he's wrong.
All his adult life he's played the long game, which takes patience and skill.
Once again, tempering the criticism is a smathering of excuses, even in a piece cloaked with a "you've run out of excuses" theme.
The reason he still has a reasonably high personal favorability rating is because people still want to give him the benefit of the doubt and hold on to the hope that we'll truly become a post-racial nation. The reason his job approval rating has fallen so fast is because he's never actually held a job, and has never been judged on personal acheivement. He has effectively written novel after novel creating a narrative for his life that he is "trying" to acheive for "us." Instead, we're not seeing the results and the only thing proving to be "transparent" is Barack Obama. We've known it for the better part of two years, but independents are just now beginning to see through him.
All his adult life he's
October 24, 2009 - 11:54 ET by motherbeltAll his adult life he's played the long game, which takes patience and skill.
Sure, there's some personal achievement, but without the prop up his
rearend, he'd be chasing ambulances like so many other Harvard Law
graduates.
Well, you have to admit, picking the "right" opportunities took skill. And I guess waiting for all those "right" opportunities to come along, with the convergence of the "right" people to get him into them, took patience.
A less-focused individual would probably have just taken a real job.

October 24, 2009 - 11:41 ET by slickwillie2001I find this intriguing:
Has Obama Released the African-American Vote From the Democratics' Hold? http://strata-sphere.com
"The latest SurveyUSA poll showing Virginia Republican gubernatorial nominee Bob McDonnell with a 19% lead over Democrat Creigh Deeds ... has some interesting internals. One of the strangest findings is that McDonnell is getting 31% of the African American vote."
Of course Deeds while a democratic is not black, –but I have always assumed that the white middle class that voted for the Bamster to assuage their liberal guilt would be the first to abandon him, but what if it's his own that goes first? Blacks can't be called racist if they vote against the Bamster, so their consciences will be clear. The hucksters like Sharpton and Jackson are not really that popular with blacks; what if they come to see the Bamster as just another black con-man?
A shift of only 10-15% of the black vote in 2010 and 2012 will be seismic.

National Emergency Declared
October 24, 2009 - 15:35 ET by ThisnThatYeah, Jon, that shocked me too. Each year 30,000 - 50,000 people die from the flu. This year, 1,000 have died from swine flue -- and Obama declares a national emergency.
But everyone knew that was coming. All this hype pushed by Obama and his so-called advisors was leading just to this.
My question is -- why? Is this another "crisis" that obama is going to try to "not let go to waste"? Or is this being done to try to shore up his health care initiative? Or a combination -- use the "crisis" to push congress into a rapid adoption of his goals? I don't know. But I am very, very skeptical here.

From "Adroit Reading" To "Misreading"
October 24, 2009 - 13:27 ET by miss911ninjaWatch as I gleefully pick this apart! First of all, Obama did not "inherit" a damn thing. An inheritance is received without any effort or choice. He chose to seek the presidency. As Ms. Dowd puts it, "He willed himself into the presidency with an adroit reading of the lay of the land." (Of course it was more due to the efforts of others, but that's another subject.)
She goes on to say that "The problem isn't his personality, it's his policies," which "reflect a misreading of the political terrain." This contradicts her assessment of him as a "cooly calibrating intellectual" whose political skills are "adroit."
In truth, the problem is his personality and his policies.

A New Saint
October 24, 2009 - 15:45 ET by easygoerFound this comment on some blog (can't remember which one). Thought you guys/gals would like it:
In a historic Holy Cow moment, the Vatican today made the startling announcement that President Barack H. Obama had been canonized a saint in the Roman Catholic Church, the first person in church history made a saint while still living. Church officials confirmed that President Obama had been given a dispensation from the normal requirement of having to die first because of concerns that Mr. Obama may in fact be immortal, as claimed by the Kool-Aid Society.
The officials further confirmed that the President had also received a dispensation from the normal requirement of having performed two miracles because, they said, he had made a number of eloquent speeches in which he had promised to perform more than two miracles -- miracles that he said were necessary to clean up the messes he had inherited from his predecessor, who not only was no saint but was the devil incarnate, according to Mr. Obama.
Pope Benedict XVI had called President Obama at 4 a.m. to advise him of his canonization. According to a source, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the conversation, the newly sainted President said thanks and asked the Pope if sainthood came with a monetary prize, like maybe $1.4 million. Advised by the Pope that there was no such prize, St. Barack told the Pope that was OK, he would easily make it up with a book deal, but the Pope would have to write a blurb for the book jacket. The Pope agreed, if St. Barack would autograph the book for him and throw in two magic teleprompters. Done. Sainthood had not dulled the Uniter-in-Chief's keen ability to negotiate and bring people together.
But there was more negotiating, according to the source:
St. Barack said he wanted St. Peter's Square rebuilt and expanded to make room for all his adoring followers on the day of his canonization ceremony in the square. And he wanted the name of the square changed to St. Barack's Square, along with the name of St. Peter's Basilica changed to St. Barack's Basilica. And he wanted the exclusive use of the square and basilica for all his future campaign rallies. The Pope politely declined but countered with letting St. Barack dress up like the Pope for the canonization, complete with pointed mitre and golden staff, and agreeing to kiss St. Barack's ring. That was a good start, but no deal, said St. Barack, according to the source.
St. Barack said he also wanted his image put on all Vatican coins and he wanted his birthday, August 4, designated as a holy day of obligation for all Catholics around the world. His divine patience wearing thin, the Pope agreed, and the two men at last broke into a chorus of Yes We Can, in Gregorian chant.
Now we may all pray to St. Barack, the Accomplished and the Humble.

rubble=chaos=distraction?
October 24, 2009 - 15:56 ET by wiley catMs. Noonan definitely has a close grip on the manner, behaviors and gaffes of Mr. Obama, and a careful and thoughtful description of our current circumstances. Could she be missing the opportunity make a few more points in the area which we are Not talking about, the politics?
One of them is the fact that the "terrible" financial situation was created "by Democrats for Democrats", in the mortgage and "sub-prime" (a euphemistic phrase if there ever was one) mortgage lending mandates passed by Senate Democrats and their "power-thirsty" and "agreeable" cohorts. Another is the re-making of Fannie-Mae and Freddie-Mac into prolific issuers of those mortages. And, they instigated the occurrence of the "empty notes" melt-down right on time.
One could also note that President Obama's gaffes seem to occur when he is not in the immediate presence of his "handlers". His comments do seem a bit "testy", compared to his carefully prepared speeches. Does he really care? Is there any evidence that he does? Chaos is Chaos. Distraction is distraction, from wherever it comes.
Let's not be distracted with minor achievements like the weakening of the economy and the pending destruction of Private Enterprise and Professional Competency and Individual Rights promised by the passage of ObamaCare, in any form! PLEASE become familiar with Saul Alinsky's book Rules for Radicals, written and taught to "Commune-ity Organizers" (including BHO and Hilary C.), as a plan for achieving his goals, as you evaluate BHO's performance. It could be sub-titled "Chaos for Communities and Countries, the Path to Power".
Based on the views and politics of the people he talks to every day and the people whom he is rewarding with positions of power and influence(the Commi-Tzars) , and his actual decisions and policies implemented, not one ounce of compassion, good will, or good intention has been demonstrated toward the individual American citizen, and toward the legal foundations of this country, that I can see.
While we are fascinated and horrified with the products of his decisions, each day he is adding another layer of authoritarianism to their carefully planned strategy to place the American Legal System and the American Citizen in a corner where they can shout with triumph: "Checkmate".
A number of knowledgeable voices have expressed this same concern. Will the citizens who love having a system, which, though imperfect, at least acknowledges the value and humanity of each individual person in this world, and which operates under a system of laws which are based on this truth, stand up and be counted and exercise their (currently) sovereign right to vote and to speak there opinions freely (and to own their guns privately)? I hope and pray so.
Living under a regime with a philosophy which dispenses rights and privileges based on the contingencies and exigencies required by the need to gain and maintain total power, and the idea/assumption that inviduals have no value in themselves and no identity or power unless they (any individual person) are a part of a "class" defined by some type of status symbol or sociologically or behaviorally defined "group", is not my idea of positive "Change".
The book The Captive Mind by Czeslaw Milosz, a Polish poet, about life lived under Soviet Communist rule, with comments also about living under Nazi rule, vividly describes the blanket that descends over individual activities and relationships under such rulers.
Let us become a nation of individuals with no blinders over our eyes which distort our ability to discern the motives and probable results of the actions of those who stand in positions of power, both for our good and to our detriment.
There is NO scientific evidence for "anthropogenic" Global Warming. NONE.

October 24, 2009 - 16:02 ET by ThisnThatSleep Out for Clean Energy - “Instead of staying in our homes under the comfort of dirty energy, we’re putting ourselves on the line for the policy we believe in." So say students in Boston, MA, as they are suckered into the "350" event today. Billed as the largest political environmental action effort in the world’s history.
These "students" don't like dirty energy. So, they are willing to sleep outside for one night -- before they go back to the comfort of their own homes, apts, or dorms.
If I was their parent, funding any part of their "education", I can guarantee they would not receive an additional penny from me. Ever. For anything. Any child of mine that grew up to be so stupid deserves to make it on their own, all the while avoiding "dirty energy".

If Obama isn't up to
October 24, 2009 - 17:19 ET by Chris NormanIf Obama isn't up to "cleaning up someone else's mess", why in the hell did he volunteer for the task? Hell, he even paid hundeds of millions for the job. He knew how bad it was long before going in - if his ideas are only making it worse, he should resign and call for a special election so we can get in a conservative who is up to the job. Obama didn't "inherit" anything - he asked to be given it.

National Emergency!!
October 24, 2009 - 21:45 ET by Roger the ShrubberThe Messiah declares a national emergency because 100 people died from the Mexican, er, Swine Flu.
Since over 36,000 die from flu-related causes in the United State each year, shouldn't we be in full panic mode year after year?
What is the REAL reason behind this happening? What misdirection is going on here? Will martial law eventually be imposed? Is this just a distraction away from the countless failures of the current administration?

I'm a little stunned at how there's not much attention being made about the oncoming UN Climate treaty signing in December. My opinion is that President Obama must NOT sign this treaty. It would be a huge mistake. When I say huge, I mean a biblically huge mistake. It's great to be sovereign as a country. It's even better to remain that way.

Fitz, even if Ear Leader
October 25, 2009 - 12:15 ET by MikeBFitz, even if Ear Leader signs the treaty, it would have to be ratified by a 2/3 vote in the Senate. As long as the voters keep calling, writing, faxing, and e-mailing their Senators, that treaty will not be ratified. Remember, Comrade Bubba did not even bother to submit Kyoto to the Senate because he knew it would not get ratified.
Besides, now it doesn't look like the agreement will come about. And Obamassiah is not at this time planning to go to Copenhagen. Perhaps the city has bad memories for him (hawhawhawwwww).
