Just as soon as "average Americans practice their First Amendment free speech rights to protest another outrageous liberal proposal," the liberal media "immediately go into full-on attack mode - against the American people" Media Research Center President Brent Bozell argued in a statement released this morning.
"Just as with the tea party protesters, and the socialized health care town hall protesters, the media are again attacking the American people for having the temerity to speak up," the NewsBusters publisher complained.
Mr. Bozell was addressing the vicious personal attacks members of the media have been making on parents objecting to the proposed Obama administration "lesson plan," which was to accompany a speech President Obama is delivering today to American children.
President Obama is still addressing the children, but in response to public outrage has withdrawn the Department of Education "lesson plan" which recommended among other things that teachers have their students "write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the President." As the Weekly Standard's Bill Kristol has pointed out, it is against the law for the Department of Education to hand down any sort of teaching materials. But rather than report on this, the leftist media are attacking parents.
The New York Times' John Harwood, appearing on MSNBC, accused parents who objected of being racist, saying "Partly it's simply because Barack Obama is a different kind of president: first African-American..." and later said "the biggest danger to kids in this whole thing is that a lot of the parents complaining aren't smart enough to raise them very effectively."
CNN's Roland Martin, when asked whether the lesson plan was a problem, he responded "No, it's not a problem. What you have is you have some insane parents who want to bring their ideology into the table... This is absolute nonsense."
Liberal columnist David Sirota, appearing on CNN, declared that people protesting the Administration's lesson plan and speech are "a bunch of psychopaths."
The full statement from Mr. Bozell:
Here we go again. Average Americans practice their First Amendment free speech rights to protest another outrageous liberal proposal, and the media immediately go into full-on attack mode - against the American people for practicing their First Amendment free speech rights.
Parents are placing themselves between their children and a chilling Obama Administration ‘lesson plan,' and the media respond by calling them racists and insane psychopaths. The liberal media are more interested in assailing parents and continuing to cultivate Obama's cult of personality than they are in reporting the truth.
You would think that at some point the media would make the connection between their attacking their prospective viewers and their perpetually imploding ratings."
Just as with the tea party protesters, and the socialized health care town hall protesters, the media are again attacking the American people for having the temerity to speak up. How dare they.

Attacking Parents
September 8, 2009 - 11:19 ET by merlin61The MSM are so into the Obama indoctrination mode that they can't see the forest for the trees. Yes, when parents heard that he was going to preach to them about how they could help him, and to write essays about how wonderful he is, they got their backs up. Isn't it amazing that after the outcry, they backed off and now his speech is only going to be about staying in school and getting a good education. No one opposes that message. Parents were right to scream about indoctrination and should continue to monitor what this administration is pushing. We will not accept socialism or communism. We don't need a Chavez or Castro in our country.
Merlin, exactly,
September 8, 2009 - 11:26 ET by UpNorthno one has a problem with encouraging kids to stay in school and get an education. But, lots of folks have a problem with someone, anyone, trying to bend their minds to the agenda of the one doing the speech. As Chuck Z said on his blog, From My Position, "You have no right to address my children without my permission. I don't
know you. I doubt that given your approval ratings, those poor,
disillusioned, misguided people who voted for you could also claim they
know you. More to the point, without a judiciary and legislature to
watch your every move, I don't trust you speaking to my children. I
don't trust that you won't try to push your agenda on them, and
disguise it as trying to "inspire" them.
Don't feel too bad, I wouldn't have trusted Bill Clinton with my kids, either. Well, not my daughter, anyway".
Couldn't have said it better, succinct and to the point.

September 8, 2009 - 11:31 ET by ConservativeRexThis may be a quibble, but did anyone else catch the part in the Obama Indoctr..err school speech where he said " my mother was very poor, I could not go to school where the Americans went to school"? Why didn't he say "where the other Americans went to school"? It may not be anything, but it sure sounded interesting.
sounds familiar
September 8, 2009 - 12:11 ET by boomerconI had a roommate in college who was from Mexico City. Spoke excellent english, but got tangled up because he "thought" in spanish, and whether listening or speaking, he had to "interpret" the message either to, or from, spanish to english (or vice versa).
Wonder if "the One" has similar problem in identifying with Americans...he just cannot seem to "think" or "feel" like an American. He must always interpret, as if speaking from an outsider's point of view. It's becoming more and more telling as his actions now speak volumes.
Interesting story,
September 8, 2009 - 12:55 ET by Indiana JoeInteresting story, boomercon. It would explain a lot. Such as, when he says "we," you don't usually get the feeling that he's including you. At least, I don't.
It may illustrate how much of an "outsider" he truly is. I mean, we want to get rid of the "insiders" in Washington, but we don't want such an "outsider" that he's not even convinced he's an American.
Do we?

Reasons
September 8, 2009 - 11:34 ET by txcoHere are the reasons I'm concern about this speech:*I really don't trust President Obama to act Presidential. He has not hesitated to be very partisan in the past 6 months...the most chilling comment to me was when he said "the people that got us into this mess shouldn't talk very much"...basically telling about 35 percent of the country we have no voice with him. Would he use this speech to say something similar?
*I'm afraid he will paint America as a country that has done bad things to the world. Like he did when speaking in other countries. Again, I don't trust him to present America as a great country(past and present) that they should be proud of.
*I really worry that a lot of the educators that have their students listen to this speech will use this as a way to indoctrinate the students to believe not in the Presidency but in the man, Obama. I think this is already happening in our classrooms(especially in states that have teacher unions). There are a lot of educators that do not allow students to freely discuss both sides of an issue. This attitude is reflected in the “lesson plans” that the Department of Education Developed.
what he says and really means
September 8, 2009 - 11:47 ET by jon_torlinI mentioned this in a different post about how he says certain things and their meanings behind them.
"the people that got us into this mess shouldn't talk very much"
At this point, I attribute that to mean the voters that voted him into office. After all, everything he's said is opposite of what's happened, like unemployment and taking over GM "We don't want to run it" but it's a government entity now, they are running it.
Those are the examples that come immediately to mind when it comes to what he says and really means.

" the most chilling
September 8, 2009 - 12:54 ET by MikeB" the most chilling comment to me was when he said "the people that got us into this mess shouldn't talk very much..." So, the Democrats need to shut up? Wasn't CRA passed by a Democrat controlled congress and signed by a Democrat President (Carter)? Later on, when CRA was modified to force banks to provide mortgages to welfare recipients and others without any way to repay the loans, wasn't the bill passed by a Democrat controlled congress and signed by a Democrat President (Clinton)? When Republicans (Bush and McCain) told Congress that Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae needed some oversight, it was a little lisping Democrat tinkerbell (Bahnee Fwank) that assured one an all that there was no problem at Freddie and Fannie, and that those mean old Republicans were just being meanies and racist besides.
When the Porkulus bill was passed (without being read) it was with solid Democrat majorities in each house of Congress. Yup, the Dems need to shut up and go home, so that responsible people can try to undo the damage.

September 8, 2009 - 11:48 ET by Six String SpiffIt's funny how all of a sudden the first amendment needs a qualifier to the left. When lefties are carried out in cuffs while wailing and thrashing during a State of the Union address, it's no big deal. When lefties march the streets with Bush = Hitler signs, no notices. However, when legitimately concerned citizens assemble and ask questions at these 'town halls', they are vilified and labeled as 'ultra/extreme/radical/far/neo/conservatives behaving badly.
I am sick and tired of the media ignoring the violent far left. Take the story of the finger bitten off in CA. Not one peep about how that incidents was hideous behavior by the left. We hear round the clock coverage about white town hall protesters bring weapons (which is legal) to the events, and they even go so far as to edit out of their own footage that it was a black man carrying the weapon! One has to stand in awe of the colossal circle the wagons have made for THEIR PRESIDENT.

September 8, 2009 - 11:53 ET by Indiana JoeFirst of all, the media only believe in THEIR First Amendment rights, not the rights of the "unwashed masses." Remember, "freedom of the press" only applies to those who own a press.
Secondly, anyone who doesn't subscribe to the prevailing media viewpoint is obviously either stupid or insane, possibly both. Our "betters" surely know what's best for us, more than we humble serfs. After all, they went to college and studied journalism.
Finally, opposition must be attacked, ridiculed, isolated and destroyed. Only that way can the Rei... uh, I mean, "the dream" be realized.

September 8, 2009 - 12:01 ET by motherbeltI said this in the Open Thread:
You know, Obama could have avoided a lot of this grief if he had simply
issued a statement or filmed a little clip, welcoming kids back to
school and encouraging them to work hard and do well (which is what
other Presidents have done).
But no, they had to make a big announcement as if this were yet another major speech by the President, and get the DOE involved developing an entire lesson plan around it.....
But we're supposed to believe that it's not about HIM, you see......
*******
Politico has this from Jake Tapper...explaining what wording they changed (h/t Dee Bunk):
The original phrasing was:
"Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. “
Changed to:
"Write letters to themselves about how they can achieve their short‐term and long‐term education goals.”
“We changed it to clarify the language so the intent is clear,” said White House Spokesman Tommy Vietor.
They had to "clarify" that by "help the President" what they really meant was "achieve short-term and long-term education goals."

The Spin Is Overwhelming
September 8, 2009 - 13:13 ET by Junk Science SkepticThe MSM has passed off the lesson plans as the product of the DOE, nothing of Obama's doing.
So why then is a White House spokesman using "we" when discussing the changes?
A few years back, the president was held personally responsible for every action of an army private half-way around the globe, but now the president isn't even held responsible for the actions of his cabinet-level officials? Hmm, what changed?

September 8, 2009 - 13:39 ET by celatorAnd if the Obamatons had not been caught red-handed by alert citizens, they would have had a field day propagandizing these kids with the materials they initially intended to use.
Once more, the traditional media chose to ignore the story, except to demonize the parents.
Rush had a call from a school superintendent today which was a real eye opener. In the past, school superintendents and school boards have been asked by the WH or other government agencies if they could present their materials to students in a school system. School boards approved or not.
THIS TIME, the informational materials from the WH were sent to teachers and principals only. Supers and school boards were kept out of the loop.
Says it all.
No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

September 8, 2009 - 14:29 ET by jon_torlinDefinitely a bad sign, just a perfectly good example of them doing whatever they want and to hell with anyone that objects.
I recently saw a video shown by Bret Baier(sp?) of Fox News of a Democrat Congressman who said he ran the townhall meeting("this is MY townhall meeting!"), and he even said that no one can tell him how to run his Congressional office. He said it twice too.

But when President George H.W. Bush delivered a similar speech on October 1, 1991, from Alice Deal Junior High School in Washington DC, the controversy was just beginning. Democrats, then the majority party in Congress, not only denounced Bush's speech -- they also ordered the General Accounting Office to investigate its production and later summoned top Bush administration officials to Capitol Hill for an extensive hearing on the issue" LINK

Ear Leader's school speech
September 8, 2009 - 12:41 ET by MikeBEar Leader's school speech and the accompanying lesson plan was discussed at the Rott back on the second. Some of the actual questions from the lesson plan were posted and some of the posters gave their own answers:
What is the President trying to tell me?
To be a good little robot.
We have a duty to support parasites.
Hard work will be severely punished.
What is the President asking me to do?
Believe his hooie.
Snitch out my parents or anyone who thinks different from Dear Leader.
Give up all of my freedoms and Dear Leader will take care of me for the rest of my life.
What new ideas and actions is the President challenging me to think about?
Nothing new about selling hooie.
I’ve never thought about joining the armed resistance before.
After looking at what Dear Leader has said and done, and comparing it with what President Reagan said and did, I am thinking that Conservatism and Capitalism are the way to go.
What specific job is he asking me to do?
Um, betray America?
Betray my parents.
Betray my family.
Betray my Church.
Ignore history.
Ignore human tendancies.
Is he asking anything of anyone else? Teachers? Principals? Parents? The American people?
Be “good Germans”.
Indoctrinate the young so they, too, will be “good Germans”.
What do you think the President wants us to do?
Buy his hooie?
Stop thinking, just obey Dear Leader.
Does the speech make you want to do anything?
Throw a rock at the monitor.
Puke.
Are we able to do what President Obama is asking of us?
Not if we think about it.
Only if we have the self-esteem, independence, and will of a lapdog
What would you like to tell the President?
Um, “Kiss off?”

September 8, 2009 - 18:44 ET by stage9is a has-been joke and a puppet of the new Socialist State. The only ones dumb enough to even watch them anymore are either aging hippies or those suffering from paranoid delusions (which is redundent I know).
"No, it's not a problem. What you have is you have some insane parents
who want to bring their ideology into the table... This is absolute
nonsense."
And what "ideology" pray tell, are these communist sympathizers referring to? Those based on Judeo/Christian values? An ideology based on universal absolutes rather than the ridiculous idea of postmodern realtivism? What ideology are they referring to? A Constitutional ideology? - a nation "of the people and by the people" (this isn't a liberal idea) - that people are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights? How can a liberal atheist arrive at a statement like "men are endowed with rights by a Creator"? They don't believe the unborn have rights. They don't believe the elderly have rights. And what of the rights of the Terry Schiavos and the terminally ill?
And by the way, doesn't EVERYONE bring an ideology to the table when
addressing sociopolitical issues? Everyone has a worldview, and
everyone comes to the table of ideas with that worldview. The most
coherent and rational worldview should emerge at the end of the
day...but then, what do liberals know about coherence?
It seems to me their ideology is the one that is insane. Maybe this explains why they swoon over Communism. It is a godless, state-run system that forces men to submit to the base will of a sociopathic dictator.
And so, yes, it seems we return to the term: insanity.
