For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Obama shows some strength?

The Air Force has successfully launched an unarmed Minuteman 3 intercontinental ballistic missile from the California coast to an area in the Pacific Ocean some 4,200 miles away. Lt. Raymond Geoffroy says the ICBM was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base at 3:01 a.m. Monday and carried three unarmed re-entry vehicles to their targets near the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands...The Air Force says the launch was an operational test to check the weapon system's reliability and accuracy, and the data will be used by United States Strategic Command planners and Department of Energy laboratories.

It's only about another 1,000 miles to North Korea. Was this a show of strength by Obama?

Fox News accepting advertising from....

....Planned Parenthood!!!??

This morning there was an ad for PP on Fox and Friends trumpeting the fact that 90% of its services dealt with preventative care as compared to the other "care" it provides.

Disappointing to say the least, but also interesting that PP bought air time on Fox News.

Fox

I don't think Fox has much that is forbidden when it comes to advertising.  We've not seen much from liberal organizations because they know Fox has a huge conservative audience who won't use their producers/services anyway, so why spend the advertising dollars.

Nah

This test was probably planned during the Bush Admin. I don't think that NK will be shaking in their boots over this. They know that Dear Leader is chicken s*&t.

No, he's sticking with his buddies on this one.

Either Dear Leader BHO is in cahoots with Chavez and Castro OR he's so woefully uneducated in the workings of Honduran Constitutional Law as to be a joke.  Now he says that the ouster of the Honduran president is "unlawful."  Guess what?

It was the Zelaya who was breaking the law and who tried to flout his nation's constitution.  The Honduran Supreme Court ordered his ouster, which they were legally obligated to do.

Two observations on this:

1) The MSM is totally out to lunch on this one with absolutely clueless report - or (worse yet) completely biased and stilted reporting; and,

2) Our president is absolutely clueless when it comes to foreign affairs.  I know that's not news to most of use here at NB, but this is a stark case of it.

BHO: screwing our friends and ingratiating our enemies.

I doubt Duh One is showing

I doubt Duh One is showing and fortitude, if he was serious then he would stop the DPRK ship with the McCain and board the ship.  To me it was an exercise just like any other, of course it could be like a strongly worded letter with just as much effect.

I am thinking, a bad thing sometimes, that the military can detect if any of the missiles from DPRK have nuclear mats on board.  I am no scientist but perhaps some forms of specteral analysis would do this.  But perhaps not.

But Duh One is going to sell us down the river and charge us to get back upstream.

Comrade O fires one off

It was a pre-4th of July firing just to make sure we have some fireworks left that can be used. Test probably scheduled 1-19-09 and they just got around to it.

I think the best move Obama

I think the best move Obama could make on North Korea is to ignore them.  They've yet to be able to prove they have detonated a nuclear warhead, their missiles only have the range to reach the west coast of the US if they're launched with no warhead at all, their OOB is mostly antiquated Soviet-era junk, and their Army is large but starving.  Responding to their threats in any way just empowers Kim Jong-Il and does nothing for us.

They would make it from

They would make it from Cuba.

Complacency

They've yet to be able to prove they have detonated a nuclear warhead, their missiles only have the range to reach the west coast of the US if they're launched with no warhead at all, their OOB is mostly antiquated Soviet-era junk, and their Army is large but starving.  Responding to their threats in any way just empowers Kim Jong-Il and does nothing for us.  This is about the most complacent reading I have seen in some time.

I don't worry about their nukes.  I DO worry about their chemical weapons which I have no doubt they would use.  And unlike you, I find myself concerned for the safety of the 11 million or so residents of Seoul, all within range of artillery fire, and the millions of others who will suffer after inhaling mustard gas and other chemicals the DPRK are ready and eager to use.  You may not care because "Hey, it doesn't effect me!" but it WILL effect you as such actions by the DPRK will at the very least have detrimental effects on the Kospi and will reverberate around Asia, effecting the Nikkei, Hang Seng, Straits Times index, and so forth.  Not to mention the political effects in many Asian capitals.

The DPRK simply cannot be ignored.  Funny how you state with such assurance that the NKPA is "starving".  Really?  You can assure us beyond a shadow of a doubt that the food aid that the DPRK has received has been distributed nice and evenly across its society, instead of being immediately turned over to the military for their exclusive use?

"CONSUMED DEMOCRACY RETURNS A SOCIALIST REGIME" - Slayer, "Fictional Reality", from Divine Intervention (1994)

I've spent a lot of time

I've spent a lot of time working with ROK forces, and the truth is that the DPRK is man-power heavy but light everywhere else.  Yes, they have chemical weapons, but it's very unlikely they would ever be used.  The ROK also have chemical weapons and would surely retaliate.

My point is that the reason Kim Jong Il is threatening his little missile launch is to get the spotlight back on himself and his regime.  It's nothing more than a desperate attempt to get attention.  If we respond to his threats, by shooting his missile down or reacting in a military way, then all we're doing is empowering him.

Kim Jong Il knows that any attack on the ROK would not be supported by their chief sponsor, China, and draw swift and massive retaliation from the US, Japan, etc.  All Kim Jong Il has to offer is lots of barking and no bite.

Still not impressed

All Kim Jong Il has to offer is lots of barking and no bite.   And as one who himself has spent some time on the "pen", this will come as very cold comfort to those who have perished as the result of DPRK actions.

My old man, who has been there three times, told me that his fear is that the DPRK will fire their chemical weapons, and that the ROK would retaliate in kind, and thus render much of "the pen" a wasteland.

Yes, they have chemical weapons, but it's very unlikely they would ever be used.  The ROK also have chemical weapons and would surely retaliate.  Complacency.  I seriously doubt that a regime that thinks it's great that their OWN people eat tree bark will suddenly begin to discover scruples in warfare.  Hence I would never say "it's very unlikely (chemical weapons) would ever be used".

In that case, do you support a total withdrawal from the Korean peninsula on the basis that we are "empowering" Kim Jong-Il and the Korean Worker's Party by having our forces there?

Kim Jong Il knows that any attack on the ROK would not be supported by their chief sponsor, China, and draw swift and massive retaliation from the US, Japan, etc.  I don't know in the case of China.  Their relationship with the North Koreans is complex to say the least.  One reason they keep propping up the DPRK is because the Chinese FEAR instability.  The last thing they want is an influx of refugees across the Yalu (even though in some regards this is already happening).  So, in their thinking, if they prop up North Korea, they can prevent a destabilizing refugee crisis in Manchuria.  In the meantime, they hope to keep the DPRK on a short leash.

Believe me... once you get

Believe me... once you get out from under the media umbrella of the US, you quickly learned that there are thousands of people all over this world who get killed, murdered, and massacred every single year.  You start going after the NKs, you would have to start going after just about every country out there.

There's an angle to using WMDs that few peopel seem to appreciate.  A nutso leader like Hussein or Jong Il can order the use of these weapons, but it takes several layers of military leaders to actually fire them.  It takes just one link in the Chain of Command to say to himself "if I use these weapons, we're going to get wiped out for a loon who's on his last legs.  Maybe it's better to act like I never got the order."  I've always wondered if Hussein didn't give an order in Desert Storm or the War in Iraq to use WMDs, and his military officers decided to ignore that order.

Condescension and wishful thinking

Believe me... once you get out from under the media umbrella of the US, you quickly learned that there are thousands of people all over this world who get killed, murdered, and massacred every single year.  You start going after the NKs, you would have to start going after just about every country out there.  We go from complacency to condescension.  I am well-wired into the media outlets from outside the United States, thank you.  Again, I ask you the question: Do you favor a withdrawal from "the pen" on the basis that we are "empowering" Kim Jong-Il?

This section of your post sounds to me, Buchananite.  I remember well Buchanan's endless whining that we should not have liberated Kuwait from Iraq during the Desert Shield buildup and preparation in 1990 because he said that would obligate us to do likewise elsewhere.  My response to you is the same one I would respond to him: It Depends On The National Interest.  The United States has interests in South Korea and needs Asia to remain stable, as does the rest of the world.  Hence keeping an eye on the DPRK and preparing for action against them if necessary is not a bad idea.  The United States and other countries have every right to evaluate intervention in other countries on a case-by-case basis.  It isn't a clear cut case of "Well, we did this for North Korea so we HAVE to for everyone else!" that you suggest.

This is fine and dandy, but this is again, complacency.  When facing an opponent like North Korea, I am not going to be guided by wishful thinking like this.  If Pavel Alekseyev (Red Storm Rising, anyone?) is out there, like, say, in the NKPA, great.  But the military bests functions under an "assume the worst" scenario.  Complacency is a disease that, if not fully treated by critical thinking, grounding in history and relentless analysis, will wind up sending a lot of men and women home in flag-draped coffins.

"CONSUMED DEMOCRACY RETURNS A SOCIALIST REGIME" - Slayer, "Fictional Reality", from Divine Intervention (1994)

You're asking me to be

You're asking me to be worried about something that doesn't exist.  The missile in question only has the range to make it to any part of the US absent a warhead.  If the NKs mount even a conventional warhead, the missile becomes too heavy and splashes down in the Pacific.  Second, I've yet to see any conclusive evidence that the NKs have actually detonated a nuclear weapon, and until someone can make that evidence available, as far as I'm concerned, the NKs have no nuclear weapons.

Sorry for the impression of my post, but I don't worry about make believe.  I'm as worried of NK nuclear-armed missiles hitting Hawaii as I am of aliens aligned with Kim Jong Il blasting the islands with death rays from their flying saucers.

You're asking me to be

You're asking me to be worried about something that doesn't exist

Just because you think it does not exist does that mean it does not?  The problem you have until a nuke blows up on your doorstep you dont believe it.  The Japanese even after the first bomb went off were incredulous about a bomb doing that much damage and it took a second one to convince them.

I suppose you dont believe that the Ruskis have nukes either or China or Israel?  Israel has never set one off or even admitted to having some, yet most intelegent people believe they do.  Using your criteria "I've yet to see any conclusive evidence that the NKs have actually detonated a nuclear weapon, and until someone can make that evidence available, as far as I'm concerned, the NKs have no nuclear weapons" that means Israel has no nukes.

And remember "I don't worry about make believe" is a very dangerous attitude to have in the business of protecting a country from all threats to it.  Considering all possibilties to be true at least to some extent will keep us safe.

The King of Complacency

You're asking me to be worried about something that doesn't exist.  The missile in question only has the range to make it to any part of the US absent a warhead.  If the NKs mount even a conventional warhead, the missile becomes too heavy and splashes down in the Pacific.  Second, I've yet to see any conclusive evidence that the NKs have actually detonated a nuclear weapon, and until someone can make that evidence available, as far as I'm concerned, the NKs have no nuclear weapons.  You are absolutely committed to total complacency, aren't you?

Sorry for the impression of my post, but I don't worry about make believe.  I'm as worried of NK nuclear-armed missiles hitting Hawaii as I am of aliens aligned with Kim Jong Il blasting the islands with death rays from their flying saucers.  So sit on your hands, or just be an ostrich.  When I was on "the pen", we constantly prepared for the absolute worst scenarios.  Why?  Because for some bizarre reason, the 7th AF and the 8th Army actually preferred that we fight, live, and perhaps win, if it came down to that.  (They still do, fortunately.)  Sorry, but the fact that the DPRK exists, and has killed many thousands in a bid to unite "the pen" under its rule, is not "make believe", and even IF they have no nukes or long range missiles, the DPRK STILL exists and poses a threat. You are just going to have to accept this little reality.

"CONSUMED DEMOCRACY RETURNS A SOCIALIST REGIME" - Slayer, "Fictional Reality", from Divine Intervention (1994)

Have you heard of any

Have you heard of any conclusive proof that the NKs have nukes?  Every report you hear is always caveated with words like "suspected", "unconfirmed reports', believed to have", etc.  The truth is that after two "detonations", no one has been able to confirm that any nuclear weapons had been detonated.  All we have to go on is Kim Jong Il's word, and highly-innacurate seismic readings from the Russians.

Also, normal protocol is to first detonate a large device as a proof of concept, followed by progressively smaller devices as you refine triggering systems.  The NKs haven't detonated anything that's created a seismic echo that's too large to easily fake with conventional explosives, so I'm not convinced that they are a nuclear power.

They couldn't hit an elephant from this dist -

I cannot believe for one second that one as heavily imbued with complacency as you are were ever in the military or spend a nanosecond with ROK forces.

Your attitude much reminds me of a favorite passage from a book I need to relocate again, The 776 Stupidest Things Ever Said.  It quoted a Civil War general, I believe from the Union, whose last words were "They couldn't hit an elephant from this dist-"

Does North Korea have nuclear weapons?  Perhaps.  Does the fact that we haven't confirmed they have any mean they do not?  No.  Unless you are committed to total complacency.

"CONSUMED DEMOCRACY RETURNS A SOCIALIST REGIME" - Slayer, "Fictional Reality", from Divine Intervention (1994)

Bruz, they have managed to detonate two devices so far.

The first one was a decided dud, according to what I have been able to decipher, but the second one approached Hiroshima proportions.

At some point, even the Norks will screw around and get one working that just might touch off WW V.

Remember, up until Pearl Harbor, most American "experts" claimed that Japanese pilots couldn't see well enough to fly.

Somehow, I doubt the sailors forever entombed on the Arizona would agree with said "experts."

I agree to some extent, mb,

I agree to some extent, mb, but I do not think that is the big issue here. The big issue is that our Constitution has been shat upon for so long that we are ignoring what this country was all about - independence of the country and individuals. We have gotten so far from  personal responsibility that we have effectively killed the country. The Court could begin to reverse this trend, but ideology has taken firm hold of them as well.

Only two forms of government? Find out why... http://www.flixxy.co...

What's up with the 4?

I have to look at those four and ask 'what were you thinking?' (I guess I could read the dissent?) This looks like a clearcut case of racial discrimination. It's a sad day for justice in America when the liberal justices simply parrot the liberal philosophy like a DNC party representative defending any wacky thing the Bamster does on CNN.

Sotomayor is a child of affirmative action and she knows it. Conservatives were shouted down as racist when we suggested that she owes her career to AA, but unfortunately for them she has admitted it. On the other hand, she excuses it for the tired old reason that "there are cultural biases built into testing, and that was one of the motivations for the concept of affirmative action to try to balance out those effects.” Ref: Sonia Sotomayor: Affirmative Action Baby: http://www.weeklystandard.com

Time and time again the racists make this claim, so others challenge them to fix the tests so there is no racial or cultural (?) biases, but they can't seem to do it. It's just a convenient excuse. Sotomayor is a racist, in the worst mold of Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson.

Ginsburg says...

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's dissent which she read from the bench. "The white firefighters who scored high on New Haven's promotional exams understandably attract the court's sympathy," she said. "But they had no vested right to promotion."

Give me a break....Scoring high on an exam does not give you the right to the position you are testing for? Then why even bother with an exam. Just give it to the applicant with the darkest skin.

It does not assure or vest

It does not assure or vest you for any promotion or the next promotion.  It does give you a chance for an interview to get that promotion.  In this case the platiffs had the right to have an interview and the city was wrong to throw out the results because they did not like the canditates, at least not without interviews.

I have seen many people pass tests only to be judged unfit for the promotions in an interview process.  This happens on a regular basis in civil type service because the canditates are not prescreened before taking the tests.  The city was stupid for stating the reasons the test was thrown out and should have done the interview process and then rejected the canditates.

Not that it would have in this case to be right but it would have gotten in under the radar.  Sadly this is pretty typical in civil service.

A great editorial from the Washington Times re BHO and the NORKs

Obama bluffs on defending Hawaii

July 4 could be another day that will live in infamy. The Obama administration seized headlines June 18 when the Defense Department stated that the United States would deploy ground- and sea-based missile-defense assets to protect Hawaii. This was a response to North Korea's threat to launch a long-range missile on July 4 toward the islands. However, new information suggests that the administration is bluffing and our defenses are inadequate to get the job done.

Missile-defense expert Taylor Dinerman told us that the sea-based SM-3 missiles now deployed to "protect" Hawaii are not equipped with adequate software and communications to intercept a missile traveling from North Korea to Hawaii, which would reach a terminal velocity of Mach 23 to 25.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/jun/29/aloha-star-wars/

Read it all.

Also, just a reminder to everyone that BHO just and his lackies in Congress just cut 2010 missile defense spending by about $1.2 billion.

You're kidding, right? Fortitude? Obama?

I think they fired it at 3 am because the military hoped they could test the missile while der leader was sleeping. If he was awake they might have to ask his permission.

President Pusillanimous

This is pitiful. Last time the Norks launched a missile the Bamster was too afraid to move our floating radar station into position to monitor the missile; this time he has at least done that. At the rate this idiot seems to be capable of learning foreign policy, he'll be sending strongly worded letters some time in 2012.

Russia is another problem of ours that will likely take advantage of the Bamster's weakness. Russia is holding military exercises near Georgia; what are the odds that they will wander into Tbilisi? For Russia, the Bamster's term is a golden opportunity to try and rebuild some of their lost empire.

Yet on Honduras the Bamster is all up in arms over the military move to enforce a court order to remove President Zelaya. He seems more concerned about this than Iran. Is this because Zelaya is a fellow left-wing traveler? A friend of Hugo Chavez's?

It's more of a general warning that we still have teeth, and could still use them.  When the stakes are as high as they would be with America,  it serves our purposes well to remind the world what type of cornered animal we could become.

The Missile Test

The USAF has been doing missile tests like this for many years now, so color me unimpressed.  His Majesty The Shahinshah, after all, has called for "a world without nuclear weapons", as a gushing leader in The Economist has pointed out.

It should also be pointed out that the Wimp-in-Chief also wants to veto an appropriations bill which funds the construction of an additional 20 F-22s.  (AF requirements call for 381 of them, but HMTS thinks the AF will be just fine with only 187.  Besides, in HMTS's mind, the United States military is THE locus of all of the world's evil, so why encourage them by getting them newer equipment, right?)  He still views the military with extreme contempt.  This missile test changes nothing.

Just a minute ... man

No, but Democrat presidents do like to shoot off rockets when they're personally "under fire".

Think Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

But expect some credit to be sent his way through his minions, despite Obama's viewing the military as simply a tool to be exploited when and how he sees fit. Like the expression, "Never let a crisis go to waste" we might want to add, "Never let a fireworks display by our military go to waste" either.

What President Dave would do about the Nork problem.

As CIC, I would park about four boomers within easy range of the Nork launch sites. I would also park a spy satellite directly over the country (assuming there isn't one there already).

I would also move a couple of carrier groups into the region, and tell them to make enough noise that the Norks know they are there.

Then, I would wait patiently for the next No-dong to be assembled and placed on a launch pad.

As soon as the last ounce of fuel was loaded on-board the missile, cruise missiles from four different directions would blow the No-dong into vapor, along with every other above-ground launch facility in the country.

While the Norks are busy running around in their pajamas putting out the fires, I would then go on national television and tell that sawed-off little gargoyle that, from that moment forward, if so much as a bottle rocket leaves the ground anywhere in North Korea, it will be assumed to be a nuclear-armed missile targeted at Honolulu-even if it is launched in the opposite direction.

I would then say, in no uncertain terms, that within thirty minutes of that launch, Pyongyang will be embedded forevermore deep into the face of Mars.

But, that is what a real superpower would do-one that hasn't been self-castrated as we have.

Obama's health care "reform" plan is to blow up the building in order to fix a leak in the roof-Herman Cain

It's only about another 1,000 miles to North Korea.

Get out a Map... It's almost 4,000 miles..

This ICBM launch scenario has been done since the EARLY 60's

0bama knows nothing of this launch, schedueled  at least a year ago.

DAILY WAVE

When people fear their government there is tyranny.

When government fears the people there is liberty.

Irony

I found this ironic.

In the online edition of the Charlotte Obeserver are two articles. One on the sentencing of Madoff and the other on this swindler. Swindler 2 is doing it in the name of Jesus so that is OK.

Ricktail, if the government

Ricktail, if the government collect monies voluntarily like David Cerullo then I wouldnt mind.  Now basically they are using the same tactics those of fear and class envy, but the collection methods are different.  The government is mandatory whereas the TV conman is volutary.

One adage is you cant fool an honest man, well at least for long if the man is educating himself.  And then only if he wants to be fooled.  In the religion game the only fools are those who are not basking in the WORD every day.  And some beleive they can buy off God's good graces.

Duke Rape Case 2 -- this time it's CENSORED

The state controlled media is censoring again  -- and unlike the last Duke rape case, they have NO PROBLEM keeping certain facts from the general public.

The basic facts: The accused pedo is GAY and white. The victim is his "adopted son." The kid is aged 5, and black.

Media nervous on new Duke U. rape case (updated)
Thomas Lifson

A new and even more scandalous rape allegation has surfaced at Duke University. Yet the usual media and campus PC crowd are keeping mighty quiet. Identity politics apparently trumps all sense of outrage.

Of course, after the disgraceful media and university reaction to the phony allegations against Duke Lacrosse team members, it is wise avoid jumping to conclusions, but the comparative silence on the current case is nonetheless remarkable, considering how many particulars of the case were left out of the main AP account.

Mike Adams, writing on Townhall, lays out the facts the MSM won't:

Frank Lombard is the associate director of Duke's Center for Health Policy. The university administrator was recently arrested by the FBI and charged with offering up his adopted 5-year-old son for sex. I tried to contact Frank Lombard over the weekend to probe his expertise regarding the health benefits of raping small children. So far, he's declined to comment.

University administrator Lombard is accused of logging on to a chat room online and describing himself as a "perv dad for fun." The detective who wisely looked into the suspicious screen name says that Lombard admitted to molesting his own adopted son. All this was before allegedly inviting a stranger to travel to North Carolina from another state to statutorily rape his already-molested adopted son.

I loved the article in the

I loved the article in the link.  The spouse of the president has no official role.  She should be diplomatic (not a diplomat) and act as a figurehead representing the U.S.  I thought Laura Bush did a great job in the role.  There are no checks and balances for the First Lady, so as such, she needs to smile, entertain for the president, and oh yes, as Michelle said she would, be "mommy in cheif".  I'm sick of these women dabbling in politics by virtue of their husbands' role.

Can you imagine if Hilary had won?  Good God Slick Willie would have his fingers in every pie in Washington...

“From 1985 to 2006, EITC payments grew from $2.1 billion to $44.4 billion, or by
an eye-popping 2,014 percent,” Rubenstein said. “Total federal income tax
revenues rose by 217 percent over that same period. Similarly, the number of
returns claiming the EITC rose from 6.4 million to 23 million—an increase of 255
percent—over a perperiod when the total number of federal income tax returns
increased by 36 percent.

“More than one in four immigrant households
received the EITC in 2000—nearly twice the 13.2 percent rate of houuseholds
headed by Native Americans. And because immigrant households are larger via
higher fertility, their EITC payments are larger than those received by native
households.

“Bottom line: Immigrants accounted for about 13 percent of
the U.S. population in 2008 but receive an estimated 26 percent of EITC
benefits—about $12 billion.”
