If you've got other sports matters to discuss, please feel free to do so...but let's talk Masters (those interested in live chat should go here).
Interesting round yesterday (leader board here). Any thoughts?
Any predictions about today?
Those that can't wait until CBS coverage begins at 2PM ET should go here for free, high quality video.
Exit question: is it unfair to the rest of the field that Tiger gets so much attention even when he's not in contention? Don't you get the feeling that everyone on CBS is rooting for Tiger and nobody else matters?

April 12, 2009 - 10:06 ET by dboI for one, am suffering from a little Tiger overload. It doesn't matter if it is CBS, NBC or the Golf Channel it always ends up "All Tiger, All the Time". I certainly understand this as there is no question Tiger drives their ratings. And there's no question that Tiger is a charismatic figure with a phenomenal record that deserves all the attention. I just find it a little frustrating when there's other great stories out there and all we see and hear about is Tiger. Not only the CBS coverage, but last night on the Golf Channel they spent more time talking about Tiger than they did Kenny Perry or Angel Cabrera. FWIW, I hope Perry closes the deal. He's just a nice Kentucky kid that has done it the hard way. Now a 48 year old overachiever.
ratings
April 12, 2009 - 10:16 ET by CatherwoodThe Tiger overkill is an aquiescence to ratings. CBS knows that when Tiger is in the hunt on Sunday the ratings go up. Too, there is the liberal idea of the minority player winning the Masters whichto CBS lefties is a sort of in your face revenge for Augusta's perceived lack of diversity. CBS promotes the injustice story all the time in their sports coverage, so we shouldn't be surprised by it now. The Tiger thing does get very old, though.
Maybe Rocky Roccoco will find two of everybody except him.

April 13, 2009 - 07:30 ET by compguytracywhoo tiger!!! i wish i was tiger. Seriously, in his last major, he almost got beat by a 270th seed unknown, and had to go into sudden death. Real victory there. He wasnt even below par, and the leader was at -7, where was all the coverage of the leader??

April 12, 2009 - 10:34 ET by ricklailI too am tired of the Tiger overload just as the posters below me. But you are going to see it today because he is paired with Phil Mickelson. Anybody that follows the PGA knows there is no love lost between the two. But you are going to have to put up with it for a least the first half hour because they tee off about 40 minutes before the leaders. (Coverage begins at 2.) Let's hope that Kenny and Angel, tee time 2:25, have one of those anything you can do I can do better on each hole and they have to cover it more than Phil and Tiger.
I still have hope that my man Jim Furyk can slide in there but the way Angel played yesterday he is going to be hard to beat.

April 12, 2009 - 10:38 ET by Cool ArrowSince I'm out here at work today, I could go for a little Tiger Overload.
But to me, Tiger's a figure who's refused to wear a patch of ethnicity on his sleeve. The Nets will mention it, but you won't see them asking him about it much.
He's the product of his middle-class dad's love for a rich man's game.
Unless you count his dad's Military service, I doubt I paid a dime helping him excel in his field.
Now that's America!!!

to his credit
April 12, 2009 - 13:58 ET by CatherwoodYou're right, Cool Arrow. To his credit Woods has never once played the race card or the liberal card. Remember when he wouldn't side with Burke woman on the women members issue? He did support Obama but never said much about it. I have grown to admire his conduct on the course and like the way he shuns attention. He reminds me of Nuke in Bull Durham. When Nuke finally made it to the show he just gave the standard answers to all the questions.

Not a Tiger fan here
April 12, 2009 - 11:57 ET by Worriedbut the networks can't get enough of him. My husband is a Tiger fan, I'm a Phil fan. I called it ahead of the tournament: no matter how Tiger is playing they will focus on him the most. They'll show a player, then Tiger, then another player, then Tiger. Most of the people I know are Tiger fans so I guess the networks know this and that's why the focus on him.
I have Tiger fatigue (I borrowed that from someone).
The Masters will most
April 12, 2009 - 12:00 ET by R D HelmThe Masters will most likely come down to Cabrera or Perry, as the tournament is usually won by somebody in the last group on Sunday.
Of course, being that it is the Masters, anything is possible. :-)
The pairing of Mickelson and Woods will be an interesting side show because those who are "plugged in" to the professional golf world know that they aren't exactly on each other's Christmas card list.
As for the overexposure of Tiger Woods, I agree that it does become annoying at times, particularly when he isn't in contention, like today.
However, he is far and away the best player in the world, is very exiting to watch, and has done far more than anyone else to introduce the game to many who traditionally have shown no interest in it.
That is a good thing, because I consider golf to be the last true gentleman's game going, as most all the others have been corrupted into irrelevance.

NBers
April 12, 2009 - 12:18 ET by Noel SheppardNBers,
Well, I too have Tiger fatigue, especially on a day like yesterday when there seemed to be much more interesting stories than what he was doing.
On the other hand, the attention and money he's brought to this sport is well-appreciated by everyone in golf. I've got a friend whose son is trying to get on the official tour. As of now, he's one rung below, but makes enough money from endorsements to make a living at it. That would have been impossible before Tiger.
So, I get angry with all the coverage of Tiger, but am cognizant of how all involved in the sport are benefitting financially from it -- not just him. ns

April 12, 2009 - 14:17 ET by RukusI worked at a golf course in south Alabama for 5 years. I tried to get into golfing only to discover it made me evil. : ) My little brother now, he's all over the Masters right now, he loves it! I'll stick with peaceful games like football (college), soccer (Italian) and rugby (Australian). LOL!

Gopher Golf~
April 12, 2009 - 16:46 ET by Georgia GirlI've never understood how people enjoy golfing. I've only had one experience with golfing, back in high school, and it could be summed up with: "Look out, people -- I've got a club in my hand, a little white ball and no skill -- somebody is definitely going to get hurt!"
It's cool about your brother though. I just can't see chasing a little white ball around turf half the day -- I would lose my mind! *_*
I can appreciate your feelings
April 12, 2009 - 19:10 ET by kdizzydazeI could not understand why anyone would be interested in this game, until I married the daughter of an agronomist. The guy got me a set of clubs about 10 years ago. I thought, "what, is this guy crazy?!!?? I am going to kill somebody with the balls I slice off of these things!!". Then I started to play - now I am addicted - still enjoy the more "hardhitting" sports but man, having gotten into it, i can appreciate that mental toughness that goes into winning a golf tournament at any level.
Speaking of golf, do you remember the scene in Caddyshack where Ted Knight misses a putt that Rodney Dangerfield bet him on and he throws his club and it hits a member at the clubhouse?? Great stuff - of course, how the hell does a putter "slip" out of your hands and hit somebody nearly a hundred yards away??
God made man, but he used a monkey to do it -- DEVO
Kdizzy~
April 12, 2009 - 19:24 ET by Georgia GirlI remember that scene. And believe me, in my hands, that very thing could happen! By the time you get the proper form and are thinking all you are supposed to, I could see my mind go off the track & accidentally swinging the heck out of the club, thinking it was the ball. *_*
I do think golf is really mental. That's why I need some sort of mindless sport -- I think too much as it is! My husband golfs only on and off with buddies, but he not only reads all the golfing magazines he comes across for tips, he's gone so far as to record himself golfing...then analyze it to improve his swing technique, etc. To me, that is just too much work in a sport!~ I like swimming or horsebackriding. Much simpler. Take yourself and just add water (or a horse). :)
I'll change the subject.I still hate the blue scumbellies of UNC
April 12, 2009 - 13:28 ET by jefflebowskiI agree about Tiger but it's the same they do with anyone who dominates. It gets old real fast.
On another note, I still despise the cheating, whining, lying Tarholes who lucked into the NCAA title last week. Go Wolfpack!

I don't know where you get
April 12, 2009 - 14:47 ET by ricklailI don't know where you get this idea of Carolina being cheaters. They have not been put on NCAA probation. I seem to recall that NCSU was caught for the recruitment of David Thompson and later got sanctions under Jimmmy V. It they are not careful the NCAA is going to come down hard on them for a student web site that is trying to persuade Wall to go there. There was no luck in winning the NCAA. Beating every team they played by double digits in the tournament takes skill. Lucky is the shot that State made to beat Houston.
I'd thank you to get your facts straight before coming out calling the Heels cheaters and lucky.

Frozen Four
April 12, 2009 - 16:19 ET by ricklailI never was a big hockey fan but last night's final between Miami of Ohio and Boston U was something else. Miami held a 2 goal lead with 1 minute to play. Boston U tied it up with a goal with 17 seconds to go to send it into sudden death. Boston's winning goal acutally richocheted off a Miami player's skate. I know that had to be a heart breaking loss for Miami.

April 12, 2009 - 19:28 ET by R D Helm(Sorry I couldn't hang out on the chat with you guys, but I was watching the tournament at a neighbors house on his new whopper flat screen, and just ran over to grab some suds out of the fridge.)
Congratulations to Angel Cabrera for his most interesting win. I saw something in his game yesterday that made me think he was going to win it in the end.
LOL-Guess we can just call him senior Ricochet.
I don't think they will ever have a final round quite like that at the Masters ever again.
What a great tournament!

anticlimatic
April 12, 2009 - 19:47 ET by CatherwoodWell to say the Masters ended anticlimactically is an understatement. Cabrera is no doubt a great player and I'm sure he has a fine singing voice, but when he knocked in that last putt, there wasn't much of a roar. The patrons seemed to be wondering 'who is this guy?' The Tiger-Phil_Chad-Kenny collapses were ugly to watch and Angel's win had all the excitement of a high, not-to-deep fly ball to centerfield.
Golf? THe Masters?
April 13, 2009 - 02:44 ET by harry flashmanC'mon people - it's the first week of Baseball! The one true American sport! The National Pastime. The cosmos has shifted, the Earth tilts the north American continent to spring and a young mans fancy and American males turn to the crack of the bat, the scent of resin and pine tar, the odor of hot dogs and beer and the promise to all at a chance of redemption from last seasons failings.
27 outs per game. Last raps. THE MOST American of games. A resolution every game. Basic fairness and sportsmanship. Prince Fielder got robbed of a grand-slam and he tipped his hat to Reed Johnson for the circus catch he made in doing so.
A chess game played by men in a boys game - 162 chances to win, the longest season of any American sport.
Political parties wax and wane. Presidents come and go, celebreties are fickle, vogues and trends are wisps in the wind but The Game remains the same. Constant, consistent and always a corrolary of the American national psyche.
Roots, people, roots.
Those hapless Yankees...
April 19, 2009 - 02:28 ET by goldenthroatWow! The Cleveland Indians clobbered the Yankees 22 - 4 in their new gazillion dollar stadium! That's two for three now for the Tribe over the Bronx Bumbers!
Not that the Indians are lighting things this season but it sure looks like they're back on track after their slow start.
Gee, makes you wonder if The Boss placed a call to Joe Torre? Maybe things weren't so bad under him after all!
