For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Has Obama been lying about how bad the economy is?
Despite the incessant gloom and doom coming from the White House – just like what we heard from the president-elect before he even moved there -– the economic assumptions presented in the administration’s just-released 2010 budget proposal indicate conditions in America are actually far better than advertised.

Fri, 02/27/2009 - 10:06 ET by candanceObama will spend the next several months doing everything he can to keep the economy down. The public will be too scared to fight his takeovers, and it will keep the "blame Bush" mantra going to limit Republicans' influence in 2010.

Imagine if the most conservative President ever, one that got a 100% rating from all conservative groups was now President.
What would be the equal to Obama’s radical socialist agenda?
What would be “a 1-80″ from the gov-meant takeover of America with incredible debt, spending and secular-ecological kookism?

Fri, 02/27/2009 - 10:13 ET by GothampcIt depends on what the definition of is is.
Democrats always paint a bleak picture. At their convention, everyone who got up to make a speech that wasn't a politician had a doom and gloom story.
I believe he is painting a darker scenario than what the true story is. He wants to create havoc so he can expand his power.
I wish that the MSM wouldn't play along. Even Bill O'Reilly last night was questioning what would happen if the US went bankrupt.
This is not the worst crisis since the Depression, but it will be if the GOP doesn't get their act together and take back power in 2010.

Fri, 02/27/2009 - 10:44 ET by krendlerCan't watch or read a news story about the economy without coming across the phrase "...since The Great Depression...". Just saw an article yesterday claiming that "most economists see this as the worst economy in seven decades." No data, of course, provided to support their "most economists" assertion. And none of these stories EVER bother mentioning the conditions in the early 80s which, in terms of inflation and negative growth and unemployment, were far worse than what we have today. It's like the 80s never happened.

Lies, lies and more lies...
Fri, 02/27/2009 - 10:57 ET by PrairieSkyObama has been lying about just about everything since before he was sworn-in.
During the campaign, he said he would have a "transparent" administration...Yeah, right...What's one of the first things he does? He says that he won't hire lobbyists for administrative posts, and virtually the next day he does exactly that, but then tells us that this is an "exception" and doesn't count. Obama has also told us that he'll post all new legislation online for 48 hours before final voting on it, then immediately broke that pledge (and has continued to). He has said that he will make it impossible for congressmen to slip in pork barrel projects into legislation, but the stimulus bill and now the omnibus bill are both loaded with pork. Obama said that he would make meetings where laws are written more open to the public, then he and the Dems held closed door meetings about the stimulus bill, where they wouldn't even let their Republican colleagues take part. On Tuesday night during his congressional address, Obama essentially defined "rich" as anyone making $250,000 and up, saying those making less than that would be safe from a tax increase. Then yesterday, we find that the omnibus bill states that those making less than $209,000 would be safe from a tax increase...Which is it, Mr. President? In less than 2 days, the number has changed? The list goes on and on...All this man has done since taking the oath is lie and spout a lot of half-truths and misdirections. I'm at the point now, where I don't believe anything that comes out of his mouth...Obama could say the grass is green, and I'd go outside to look, just to make sure.
Obama is actually beginning to make Bill Clinton look honest and truthful...

I agree...I think he's going to make such a colossal mess of EVERYTHING, that the Dems will be "personas non grata" and they will be steamrolled in '10 and '12 (and hopefully beyond.) I think people are beginning to FINALLY wake-up to all this, but I am afraid it's not happening fast enough. I think at this point, on the heels of the interminably long election campaign, people are just politics weary, and add to that, the awful situation with the economy has them feeling beaten down and discouraged, and I'm concerned that these things are combining to cause people to acknowledge the garbage going on, but they may feel powerless to do anything to stop it, so they just tune out. I hope I'm wrong and people's anger and outrage will be enough to keep them engaged.

But every day this mendacious political thug does something to anger at least half the population. As he keeps it up, and he will, more Americans will see their freedoms lost through high taxation, high inflation, and a weak, traitorous foreign policy. Barry Obama is the worst thing that has ever happened to the United States of America. Ignorance and apathy have lead to the fox being in the henhouse. Only two questions remain: How bad will it get? and Will we survive?
P.S. I see where Barry has capped salary raises for government workers and the military. The boats were prevented from being used by FEMA until Harry Lee ordered them in. This was a week before FEMA presented him with the regulations.
This article twists the timeline and the facts. Congressman Jindal was actively involved along with David Vitter while Refrigerator Jefferson and Mary Landrieu were busy getting their faces on the news.
Gov Jindal and Harry Lee were close friends. Spread your misinformation somewhere else.

Jindal in hot water part 2
Fri, 02/27/2009 - 21:15 ET by shawn228Hi Cocodrie,
I'm pretty sure you read where I said it was from a liberal source so I was no sure how accurate it was.
The article did not say anything about FEMA
Did I or the article imply that Jindal and Harry were not close friends?
This doesn't seem to bear on the key question. The main thing
elements of Jindal's story were that he was in Lee's office during the
crisis itself, and that his support for the sheriff helped ensure the
rescue went ahead. Neither of those things was true, it now seems.

Please Shawn
Sat, 02/28/2009 - 02:41 ET by cocodrieThis incident occurred during the recovery effort after the storm. Congressman Jindal made several trips here during this time.
FEMA is who Harry Lee was arguing with. Congressman Jindal was in Lee's office during the recovery effort just as he said and the story is supported by Jindal's aides.
Anything to smear a conservative, right?

Sat, 02/28/2009 - 05:03 ET by shawn228I hate any politician that makes things up or embellishes a story to great length to make themselves look good Democrat or Republican.
Coco, Jindal tried to imply that he was there at the key time and that he was responsible for getting those boats off to rescue people in trouble, but it turns out he was not there at the key time and played no role in making the rescue happen.

Sat, 02/28/2009 - 12:24 ET by shawn228I have said many times, how I hate it that Obama will not admit how the surge has worked, I do not like the fact that we will be responsible to pay for abortions around the world and I am nervous as hell about his stimulus program. However I did say before he was elected that I would give whoever won the election a year to see how they do.
I honestly am hoping Jindal did not do anything ethically wrong, and I was disapointed only because he is probably my favorite next to Guiliani for being the the 12 GOP pick.

Sat, 02/28/2009 - 12:32 ET by Cool ArrowBut you feel it necessary to bring up a rumor about Bobby Jindal, prefaced with the ever so popular "I don't know how trustworthy the source is" (see also "I'm jus' sayin'")

Sat, 02/28/2009 - 20:12 ET by Cool ArrowAre you saying Murtha deserves the same respect in his party as Jindal does in his?
Some people are indefensible. Murtha called his fellow Marines murderers. Called his own constituents racists.

Those he accused have since been exhonerated.
And these are facts, not rumors.

Sat, 02/28/2009 - 03:04 ET by JWFJindal chief of staff Timmy Teepell also told Smith that the "the exchange took place in the week following Katrina, when Jindal visited Jefferson Parish multiple times."
"He was boots on the ground all the time," Teepell claims.
So why try to imply something different. You want respect, yet you imply something and then providing a source that actually counters you implications.
And then you get annoyed when you are viciously mocked.

Both Prairie and Coco saw the original link before it was updated. The part about Timmy Teepall was not there originally and was updated after people wanted Jindal to answer the question.

You got something, back it up with something that does NOT refute your own claims. Otherwise you are nothing but a little slimey partisan hack.
From my post in the open thread...
Honestly, when I first heard the Jindal/Katrina thing, I thought the libtards were saying he MADE IT UP.
No. It is the "During Katrina" thing. Seriously! Stop laughing. They are actually trying to sell the idea that he meant during the hurricane itself. Not the hurricane/flooding/disaster/rescue/recovery liberal media meltdown period. But the CATERGORY 4 HURRICANE ONLY.
http://jimtreacher.com/archives/002008.html
Of course not. Everybody knows that the event we now refer to as "Katrina" was strictly limited to the brief period of time when Louisiana residents could actually reach up and touch the hurricane. After that, the crisis was over! There were no problems at all. (And if there were, nobody directly blamed George Bush for any of them.) So for Jindal to say "during Katrina," when it was actually up to a week later according to Ben Smith at Politico, is obviously the basest, most contemptible sort of lie.
The sheriff is on tape TALKING about the visit from Gov. Jindal. (same link from Jim Treacher)
Partial transcript: "Hurricane Katrina, the day after, Bobby was in my office, said, 'What do you need?' And it wasn't phone calls, he was in my office... I know how involved he was... He was hands-on. I got him everywhere he had to go in my helicopter, and he was there all the time. When the thing was over, he'd got equipment for us. And I said, 'Bobby, where did this new equipment come from? I wanna thank somebody.' And he said, 'I took care of it, don't worry about it.'" I hope nobody shows this to Josh Marshall and Zachary Roth. Might ruin their weekend.

Sat, 02/28/2009 - 12:10 ET by general companyIf you ever get to meet Jindal you will find him about as honest as they come, as a politician it is almost a fault, until you relies he sincerely cares. When the Dems were on the radio whining and blaming Bush and FEMA, many conservatives both on the State level and Vitter and Jindal were doing everything they could to use state transportation to evacuate and bring in supply's. My SiL was a NO Fireman, I and hundreds of others volunteered to help out anyway we could. One of the things that pi$$es me of most about Katrina is the impression the media gave to the country and still does that everyone down here just sat around waiting for the feds to show up. The Dems in our State made this far worst then is should had been.
Harry Lee was a good man, if you ever see any video of him, you will be able to perfectly picture him and Jindal having this conversation, Lee with his excitable demeanor and Bobby trying to be the voice of calm and reason.
BTW, the media could easly find folks who could verify Jindals account of what happened. But most likely they will run to Nagen and other Dems like they did after he gave this rebuttle. Bobby is loved down here by everyone but the Dems, Media, and Unions. If I had it my way he would stay out of the Fed and work on making LA a state that is kept out of the Federal gip.

Happy Days are Here Again
Fri, 02/27/2009 - 10:59 ET by dboSo despite his doomsday rhetoric, Obama paints a rosy picture of future GDP.
2010: 3.2%
2011: 4.0%
2012: 4.6%
2013: 4.2%
What's even more laughable are his CPI projections.
2010: 1.6%
2011: 1.8%
2012: 2.0%
2013: 2.1%
It's not hard to believe that when you throw a few trillion dollars of borrowed and printed money around that you will at least see some boost in GDP in the short term. But when it comes to CPI, I think Obama should move the decimal one place to the right. At some point in time Obama is going to have to get out of his perpetual campaign mode and deal with some hard realities.

The Two Faces of Barack Obama: http://www.reason.com/news/show/131863.html

how bad is bad?
Fri, 02/27/2009 - 12:32 ET by jackie3Obama is an opportunist and he will do everything in his power to ensure no good crises goes to waste in furthering his own agenda. That said - he's not being honest on how bad it will get if the government doesn't make some serious corrections within the next few months.
The unemployment rate currently used is a new formula enacted under Clinton. using the old formula it's 15 percent (government number). So, unemployment is actually higher but not as high as the great depression - yet.
The problem started in 2000 when the bucket shop laws were practically repealed allowing derivatives trade on toxic mortgages from Fannie and Freddie. That was unregulated and snowballed out of control. The treasury failed to regulate it and failed to stop the uptick policies which allows for betting on losing stocks. Many rich people are getting richer as we speak.
The derivatives bubble is approximately 4 times greater than the entire banking system. This is all basically gambling money. These gamblers now want to get paid but there is not enough money in the entire system to pay them. the government could have cut that down by regulating the system and declared the derivatives market illegal but failed to do so.
Since Obama has no intensions of actually controlling the pending implosion it's quiet possible that the market could collapse. This is his goal IMHO. Collapse the markets and get his friends very rich in the process. You and I pay taxes out the whazoo till we die and then our children and grandchildren pay taxes out the whazoo as well.
Meanwhile, Obama uses his self made crises to repeal term limits and get's re-elected indefinitely. You guys don't think he will not use this crises he's making not to ensure his life term as president do you?
We're not getting rid of this guy and his mob friends for some time. He doesn't plan on going anywhere. He's illegally claimed the presidency and never released critical documents like a actual birth certificate, school reports, ect. We know he will do whatever it takes to keep power. he stole the census already. Guns are next.

Tea Party Update!!!
Fri, 02/27/2009 - 20:14 ET by sherylsimsI am back!!! It was really really cool. I went to the one in San Diego. There were probably 300+ people there on the sides of Harbor Highway holding signs and waving flags and waving at the cars that passed by. It was such a great ambiance there, and everyone was peaceful and friendly. With the exception of maybe 4 or 5 cars, EVERY car that went past honked and waved and gave thumbs up and seemed generally supportive.
Someone threw some giant "tea bags" into the water (that part made the news, but the news didn't really say WHY everyone was there.) There was a guy running back and forth carrying a giant flag and people cheered whenever he ran past (that also made the news). It was an awesome event really. Hmm... can't think what else to tell you. There are a lot of people out there who feel misrepresented. Also, JWF (?) one guy there was holding a sign that said "Atlas Shrug" Thanks to you I knew what it meant. Oh yeah, toward the end some college age woman went jogging through yelling her democratic talking points but nobody was rude to her (the way they are in New York to the conservatives there). They just watched her and let her run through. I was pretty impressed by that.
Hey Sheryl.... Thanks so

BT
Fri, 02/27/2009 - 20:34 ET by sherylsimsIt was very rewarding to me actually. I mean, it wasn't like a chore to go or anything. It was a beautiful day and the people were just the kind you would want to spend time with. It was also nice to be so well-received by the people driving by. (I know in some areas it wouldn't have been that way). It is funny. Two of the handful of people who drove by with a "thumbs down" were driving really REALLY expensive cars. Another one was driving a limo. My thought was, "How can they think higher taxes and government control won't affect THEM!" One of the guys standing near them hollered at the guy driving by in the convertable, "Wonder how long you will keep that car after it all hits the fan!" I thought that was pretty quick thinking.
Oh yeah and...
Fri, 02/27/2009 - 20:37 ET by sherylsimsI did an "interview" with the local NBC channel news. I am pretty glad it didn't get shown though because afterwards I was trying to think how they probably could have "Sarah Palined" me and made me look alot stupider than I felt. (Besides that the camera was practically up my nose she was standing so close) Anyway, so far the news hasn't showed much at all. I keep watching for my kids to show up though cause they were doggone cute and people kept following them with the video cameras. (And they had the best signs too!)

Unfairness Doctrine
Fri, 02/27/2009 - 16:10 ET by ricklailI heard Mike Gallager mention this morning that the death of the unfairness doctrine was added as an admendment to the DC representation bill by the Senate. The problem is it is going to be stripped out by the House.

When he gets your IRA down
Fri, 02/27/2009 - 16:11 ET by billbWhen he gets your IRA down far enough, he'll offer to take it off of your hands and give you 3% from the "new and improved" Social Security. That is as long as the money lasts! On 9/11 we witnessed the symbol of our capitalizm crumble to the ground. Terrorists from a far away land did this. What is happening now is from much closer....Washington!
IRAs
Fri, 02/27/2009 - 16:28 ET by slickwillie2001Agreed poster. Long term, I see the government snatching all IRAs and 401Ks AND private pension plans above some modest sum like $100K, but don't assume that we will get anything for it in return. Obammy will say, look you have a choice here, either the rich people give up their money, or we no longer have a country. Since most people aren't rich, he can get away with it.
Think of our government as a starving, cornered and threatened animal. Anything is possible.

Miltary raises
Fri, 02/27/2009 - 20:22 ET by ricklailI just got in and got to watch the local news. Dear Leader got his loudest applause, by the Marines and sailors, when he mentioned a raise for the military. Does anybody know how much it is? Is it in the latest spending bill?
Our local news only had 2 soundbites from the Marines about Obama's speech. Both of those were black. So either they didn't interview any whites or chose not to show what they said because it would have dampened the day. They talked to one moonbat civilian who said that she didn't vote for Dear Leader but wished she would have. The local station give about 7 minutes to this visit. I had the news TIVOed so I fast forwarded through most of it.
I talked to several Marines at the resturant where we ate tonight. They were not thrilled at all about Dear Leader's visit. I got the soundbites out of those guys.

Atlas Shrugged
Fri, 02/27/2009 - 21:53 ET by slickwillie2001Don't know if you folks are tracking it, but sales of Atlas Shrugged have been climbing steadily for the last year or so. A minute ago it was #46 on Amazon. For the last few days it has ranged between 40 and 50. That's pretty stunning for a fifty year old book.

Radio chip coming soon to your driver's license?
Sat, 02/28/2009 - 09:22 ET by Sergeant ROCKRadio chip coming soon to your driver's license?
Privacy advocates are issuing warnings about a new radio chip plan that ultimately could provide electronic identification for every adult in the U.S. and allow agents to compile attendance lists at anti-government rallies simply by walking through the assembly.
The proposal, which has earned the support of Janet Napolitano, the newly chosen chief of the Department of Homeland Security, would embed radio chips in driver's licenses, or "enhanced driver's licenses."
"Enhanced driver's licenses give confidence that the person holding the card is the person who is supposed to be holding the card, and it's less elaborate than REAL ID," Napolitano said in a Washington Times report.
