For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Bush says farewell.
Fellow citizens: For eight years, it has been my honor to serve as your President. The first decade of this new century has been a period of consequence – a time set apart. Tonight, with a thankful heart, I have asked for a final opportunity to share some thoughts on the journey we have traveled together and the future of our Nation.
What did you think of his speech? How will he be remembered?

January 16, 2009 - 13:13 ET by AJThis is where I disagree. Being the eternal pessimist that I am, if the liberals get their way, history will be rewritten so that 9/11 looks like Bush's fault, that hurricane Katrina bears heavy on Bush's shoulders, and the economic crash (if it can be called that) is entirely Bush's fault.
And of course, the MSM will do this forever and always.

January 16, 2009 - 10:24 ET by shawn228There are many decisions you made that I did not agree with in the past 8 years, but I am not going to focus on those today.
Thank you for making me feel safe after 911. The whole nation was afraid and you showed remarkable leadership right afterwards and brought the nation together unlike any President that I can remember.
Thank you for how classy you are being for welcoming in the new administration, even though I am sure it was not the one you wanted to win.
Most of all, many Americans, especially liberals have taken it for granted about the fact that we have not been attacked for 7 years. Thank you for keeping my family safe from these fanatics that want to destroy our way of life.

Does money talk
January 16, 2009 - 10:25 ET by ricklailA bit off of our subject but I wanted to get this out to my friends in NC.
I have heard that Ripley Rand, son of NC Senate Majority Leader, Tony Rand (D) has the inside track on becoming the next US Attorney for the Eastern District. You probably will never hear the fact that Rand’s campaign for State Senator gave $10,000 to Obama’s campaign.
Kay Hagan, our new senator, is supposed to give Obama the name of Dewey Hudson for the same job. Hudson is the DA in Onslow County. You may recall seeing his face a lot during the Maria Lauderbach, the Marine that was killed and burned, investigation. It will be interesting to see if money does talk and BS walks.
One other point. During the campaign for senator, Hagan was beating Elizabeth Dole up over the $750 billion bailout. Seems now that she is all for the $350 billion that Bush released be given to Obama without any strings. I guess she is stupid enough to think that the Dems can now spend our money better than the RINOs could.

The president's message and followup I saw on MSNBC
January 16, 2009 - 10:29 ET by CKA in Red State USAI caught just the end of his remarks. What I saw last night and in his last press conference the other day made me wonder why that version of Bush 43 didn't show up more often.
Tuned into Chris Matthews immediately after the president finished.
After a minute, could I, I would've reached through cyberspace and slapped Matthews up side the head.
His first words were practically, "Bush came to Washington as a rich kid, a tabula rasa, no experience . . ."
Immediately, I thought: Have you no shame, Matthews? Could you at least have said one decent word about the outgoing president?
As for Mr. Tingle-Up-My-Leg-About-Obama, I felt embarrassed for his ignorance and numbed, decevied mind--that he could actually say a sitting governor of one of the country's largest states, a businessman, someone with military experience as a pilot came to D.C. without experience -- yet Barack Hussein Obama, he who causes sexual/physiological stirrings in Matthews' loins, quite literally is a textbook definition of tabula rasa.
Was reminded in that short minute why I rarely ever watch MSNBC or NBC or CBS or ABC or CNN or other liberal/leftist adverary/advocacy media outlets.
And why the liberals and leftists are insufferable navel-gazers and naysayers who lack common, civil courtesy--and suffer from terminal HUTA syndrome.

January 16, 2009 - 10:47 ET by SeashellOne thing I would like to mention here is Laura Bush. I think she has been a remarkable first Lady. Her support for her husband has been unwavering.
I will never forget when Bush addressed the nation after 9/11. I remember the look on Laura's face as she looked down at her husband as he was about to speak. You could see REAL concern there. She knew this speech was going to be tough for him to get through. She loves her husband, and it shows. I would like to thank her for giving our President sincere, loving support that I'm sure he needed during his Presidency.

Nonetheless, the President is a true Texas gentleman, and we here in the Lone Star State are so proud to call him a fellow Texan. He's the kind of guy who will always open a door for a lady or stand when she walks into a room. Laura's a very lucky girl. They're both pretty lucky.

January 16, 2009 - 10:52 ET by SmartypantsHe's got a ton of class and honor and, ironically, I think that led to some of his loss in popularity. He simply would not defend himself to idiot accusations, not wanting to lower the presidential office to that level.
In general, though, the political left does not recognize class and character. I believe they look at these attributes as weaknesses to be exploited, which they did so effectively with Bush. The left has no principles to hold to, so they are more difficult to handle from a political perspective, much like it is difficult to defeat an enemy on the battlefied that hides behind women and children.

http://appropriation...
THE AMERICAN RECOVERY AND REINVESTMENT ACT OF 2009
Yeah, they even came up with a really spiffy name for it, too.
Here are come of the lowlights, compliments of Neal Boortz:
$3.1 billion for infrastructure projects on federal lands including improvements to visitor facilities, road and trail restoration, preservation of buildings of cultural and historic importance, rehabilitation of abandoned mines and oil fields, and environmental cleanup projects
$400 million for ready-to-go habitat restoration projects
$850 million for hazardous fuels removal and other efforts to prevent wildfires on public lands
$1 billion for 21st century classrooms, including computer and science labs and teacher technology training
$66 million for formula grants to states to provide services to homeless children including meals and transportation when high unemployment and home foreclosures have created an influx of homeless kids
$2 billion to provide child care services for an additional 300,000 children in low-income families while their parents go to work
$30.3 billion to extend health insurance coverage to the unemployed, extending the period of COBRA coverage for older and tenured workers beyond the 18 months provided under current law
$500 million to rehabilitate and improve energy efficiency at some of the over 42,000 housing units maintained by Native American housing programs
$1 billion to help low-income families pay for home heating and cooling at a time of rising energy costs
-Wow, PEBO apparently thinks this country actually has money.

Senior House Democrats have a message for their Speaker: We’re mad as hell, and we’re only taking it this one last time.
As congressional Democrats take the lead in responding to the sinking economy, subcommittee and even some full-committee chairmen — who normally wield significant influence in writing legislation — have been forced to wait on the sidelines as monumental bills are written in Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) office.

Great!! now all the crazy supporters can fine them, attempt to spring them and car bomb the neighborhood. Lets make sure when the bombs go off its GWB fault. Before GWB leaves lets pardon all of them, hand them a bailout, and turn them loose in California.
Economy-When does Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Frank Raines and whom ever else had banking rules circumvented , be called before the American public and get the truth.Lets water board Barney Frank. You can blame me not GWB on that one.
Katrina- Ike did the same thing to Texas, Texas back up and running, better Government officials addressing the issue?? Alabama, Mississippi hit by Katrina back in the game one hell of a lot sooner. GWB fault??
Drill Baby Drill-right now we have no "alternative energy".it's oil, natural gas, coal.if we had lower oil prices, the auto industry would have been solvent. just by saying drill by GWB. OPEC dropped the cost of a barrel.OPEC will never loose their economic status in the world, so if there was a threat of drilling or we do fine alternative fuel, they will drop that price per barrel so low, so we will not cut them off.

President George W. Bush...
January 16, 2009 - 21:28 ET by PrairieSkyshowed again last night what those of us in America who still support him have always known...He is a good, decent, honorable man who has always done what he believed was best for our country. President Bush, love him or hate him, is a man of convictions, knows his own mind, and whose governance has never been driven by the polls, unlike Clinton, and very likely Obama.
Do I think President Bush has been a president without flaws or mistakes?? Of course not. No reasonable person would think that. But...the bottom line for me has always been very simple. What happened on 9/11 changed everything for me...Whatever problems our country faces, pale in comparison to keeping America and Americans safe, and this is what has been the guiding force behind Bush's presidency, and I support and agree wholeheartedly with that. This is not to say that other problems/issues aren't important, but none of that will mean squat if part of America becomes a smoking, radioactive hole in the ground from a terrorist attack. George W. Bush has kept that from happening for 7 years and counting. He has kept us all safe, and I have slept soundly at night during his tenure as president knowing that he has done everything that he can to keep it that way.
For this main reason, among others, President Bush will leave office on Tuesday with my deepest respect, and I will truly miss him.

Aircraft info, check out the flight deck!

No yoke (steering wheel) in this sucker. Whats all that stuff , between the rudder petals?
Also this article
The alternatives to generate power are an auxiliary power unit on the
tail of the aircraft, but the pilots may not have had time to start it.
The other source is the RAT, Ram Air Turbine, which is a propeller-driven device that projects out of the plane, turning into the windstream to generate power.
Now my question is how much power is required to activate the control surfaces, in real time?
The A320 is computer controlled, so electric power is required to operate the flight controls.
If the engines were turning they may have provided some electric power.
How about the missing LEFT engine Did the flight crew use the explosive bolts to ditch an engine?
The pilot uses a joystick to provide input to the computer systems,
which take the input and determine the optimal way to fly the aircraft.
For example, in a wind shear situation, the pilot manipulates the
joystick and the computer optimizes the position of the plane and holds
it. If all the computers on an A320 are working, the plane won't stall.
So if the plane won't stall, it landed at 0 mph? VS 185 MPH typical landing speeds? If that is true WOW, even 50 mph?
Any head winds?

Thank You, Mr. President!!!
January 17, 2009 - 00:34 ET by Asian ConI share most everybody's sentiment here about our president. He has been a class act throughout his reign. He has endured more crap than any other president or public servant in history and he took it with a smile. History WILL vindicate him. Just like Lincoln and Truman. They all had to make tough, spur of the moment, decisions.
The left acts as if Pres. Bush is the only Pres. to make mistakes or bad decisions. Guess what? He's human. Humans aren't perfect. Even The Messiah isn't perfect. One of the main reasons Bush will be vindicated is because when we get through these 4 to 8 years of hell that will be Obama's presidency, the left will truly see what a idiot in chief looks like.
The left loves to compare BHO to 'Honest' Abe. I have a link to an article that makes the case that Bush is more like Lincoln. Like, Bush, Lincoln was a liberator (slaves). Like, Bush, Lincoln was a Republican. Like, Bush, Lincoln believed in the intrisic value of life (no abortions). Like, Bush, Lincoln made unpopular decisions (The Civil War). When the war was going bad, Lincoln didn't cut and run. He decided to stick it out. Sound familiar? He, also, made decisions that might have fringed on civil liberties at the time. Habeas Corpus, anyone? So did Truman? Japanese internment, anyone. Far more controversial than anything Bush has done. Wouldn't you agree?

Couldn't agree more.
Absolutely wonderful post.
Thank You, Thank You.
January 17, 2009 - 01:19 ET by Asian ConI agree with O'Reilly when he said the liberal media is the REASON why we're hated throughout the world. The left wonder why we're disliked. They need no further than to look in the mirror, the propaganda spewing media and the high profile celebrities who love to bash their own country. Patriots, indeed.
I don't know if this is good or bad but, O'Reilly had a survey question, "Are you rooting for BHO to fail?" 61% is rooting for failure. Now, as an American, of course I want BHO to succeed. As long as he has America's best interests at heart. I don't think he does, though. I think this guy is the ultimate narcissist. He only cares about how he's going to look. How many liberals do you think were rooting for GWB's success in 2000? In 2004?

Yes, because think about it
January 17, 2009 - 08:56 ET by lotrYes, because think about it -- where does the world get all their information concerning "America"? True, there is the first-hand knowledge they might get from arrogant Amercian tourists (and yes, they are out there, thanks in no small part to a "liberalized" education that downplays self-discpline and respect for others, especially one's hosts), and there's the knowledge they may get while visiting here (which is happening more these days given the shrinking dollar), but the information they get about our government policies and officials (Obama, Bush, Clinton, et al.) all come from the mass media, especially outlets such as BBC and CNN.
And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall. -- Edgar Allan Poe
For God's sake don't
January 17, 2009 - 02:49 ET by RR GOPFor God's sake don't abandon us like McCain and the others have! Please don't sit back and play nice, but jump all over these douche bags before they take down the entire country.
Ah well, maybe he's done a hell of a lot more for us than we could ever have hoped and there's only so much we can ask of one man.
Thank you Mr. President for keeping us safe, and giving millions the chance at least to experience Liberty and Democracy.
