For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Socialist tax cuts?
President-elect Barack Obama and congressional Democrats are crafting a plan to offer about $300 billion of tax cuts to individuals and businesses, a move aimed at attracting Republican support for an economic-stimulus package and prodding companies to create jobs. The size of the proposed tax cuts -- which would account for about 40% of a stimulus package that could reach $775 billion over two years -- is greater than many on both sides of the aisle in Congress had anticipated. It may make it easier to win over Republicans who have stressed that any initiative should rely more heavily on tax cuts rather than spending.
Is this real, or a political maneuver to get Republican support for his stimulus package? If the former, how will this fly with his supporters who were expecting tax increases to punish those awful rich people?

January 5, 2009 - 10:13 ET by candanceI shall wait for all the details to be confirmed before I get excited. Congress also agreed to start lifting some bans on fuel and we see how well that worked out. I don't believe anything Pelosi says until I see what actually happens.
And for the record a temporary tax cut is paltry compensation for the long term damage of getting people hooked on welfare checks. If this does go through it sounds like a band aid so socialists can expand in the future by claiming the system works.

The other thing I wanted to mention about that interview (and I agree with you, for once David Gregory did a good job) is the way Dingy Harry weaseled about the Surge....like he's General Petraeus' big buddy, he helped the general devise the Surge strategy, etc. etc.
There is absolutely nothing to which this man won't stoop.....stealing Rush's thunder, the success of the Surge, etc. Will the voters of Nevada kindly rid of us of this scum?

Bipartisanship means
January 5, 2009 - 12:49 ET by dscottBipartisanship means collaboration, accepting part of the Dem agenda now only to have the rest foisted upon us at a later date. Any plan that includes expanding the number of government employees, spending on make work programs or kick backs to their campaign contributors under the guise of "investments" is a non starter.
You want the economy to take off, cut taxation on dividends and capital gains, as these are merely stealth taxes upon the poor in any event. Every dollar not taken by government is a dollar invested in the economy. Investments are the basis of the economy, not consumer spending. Consumer spending is a response to investment. Investments create > jobs putting money in peoples pockets > which in turn causes consumer spending. Putting the cart before the horse by handing out money via rebates or EIC or welfare or make work (government funded) jobs means you are taking money from investments to fund such largess is self defeating. But we all know in the political world, failure is success by giving the appearance of doing something to get credit when in fact it's the worst thing you can do. This is how we got here in the first place, the government incompetence of failure being success, i.e. the CRA and domestic drilling ban.
The politicians of this country have a choice, they can get the politcal credit (immediate gratification) for a feel good program that is short term in nature (even by their own admission) at the expense of the long term good OR do the right thing by removing the shackles of taxation on businesses structurally to ensure job creation. We all know politicians want immediate gratification and with the public's seeming A.D.D. the politicians are afraid they won't get the gratification if it takes one to two years to build up. I have little faith that Democrats have the political will to do the right thing, their habitual short term self interest in getting credit immediate gratification is just too strong. A leopard can't change it spots. Let's face it, we are going to experience 4 years of Jimmy Carter's 2nd term in office. Sorry, but that's dismal outlook supported by the historical evidence IF the so called candidate of CHANGE has lied to the voter to do the Dems business as usual MO.

stimulus package
January 5, 2009 - 12:51 ET by east tennessee johnAre you kidding? This is a political maneuver of the first magnitude. The tax cuts will be justified to help stimulate business and personal spending, in addition to the freeing up of credit from the $700 billion, must have, from September bailout which cost $850 billion, that was designed to free up credit in the banking sector, to limit resistance to the ultimate spending boom the Democrats so sorely want. Do the tax cuts to tone down the criticism then pass the spending on the premise that the tax cuts, simply weren't enough to do the job.
Stimulating Growth Or Funding Failure
January 5, 2009 - 14:57 ET by JDWPaulson did not buy out bad assets from lenders.
When the Big 3 came crawling along we became aware of the corruption, mismanagement, and losses attributable to the UAW. The Big 3 could produce the best cars in the world yet because of the UAW, they would remain unprofitable. And they are receiving stimulus.
The news media is dying yet at least 2 publications have requested bailout, more will follow. The liberal mindset tells us freedom of speech is essential.

But it appears some officials may have failed to mark ballots as duplicates, which are now being counted in addition to the originals. This helps explain why more than 25 precincts now have more ballots than voters who signed in to vote. By some estimates this double counting has yielded Mr. Franken an additional 80 to 100 votes.
This disenfranchises Minnesotans whose vote counted only once. And one Canvassing Board member, State Supreme Court Justice G. Barry Anderson, has acknowledged that "very likely there was a double counting."
