January 1, 2009 - 11:27 ET by fitzfongI used to love New Years Day, watching the Cotton Bowl in the morning, the traditional Pac 10/Big 10 Rose Bowl in the afternoon and the Orange Bowl in the evening (occasionally switching over to the Sugar Bowl if the game was any good). I don't even like New Years Day anymore because the NCAA suits ruined Bowl season some time in the mid '90s with the obsession over crowning a National Champion. Now all of the Bowl games...and thus the college football season are meaningless.

I remember me and my dad hooking up the black and white TV next to our Curtis Mathis floor model TV so we could watch 2 games at once you could only get off the couch for 2 reasons. To get more food and drink or to get rid of more food and drink.
Somehow I find myself not all that excited and jazzed about the big Cincinatti vs VaTech matchup in the Orange Bowl tonight.
Just for some scale of what games used to be like on New Years Day vs the crap sandwich we have now, I dug up this lineup from back in the 80's:
1987 New Years Day Bowl games:
COTTON BOWL Texas A&M (9-2) vs. Ohio St. (9-3)
SUGAR BOWL L.S.U. (9-2) vs. Nebraska (9-2)
ROSE BOWL Arizona State (9-1-1) vs. Michigan (11-1)
ORANGE BOWL Oklahoma (10-1) vs. Arkansas (9-2)
1986 New Years Day Bowl games:
ORANGE BOWL: Oklahoma vs Penn St

This is kind of cute....how much will it cost to see the game? The nosebleed seats are north of $400 each.
Check out the "Packages" at the bottom....for a mere $82,000, I could take seven of my good friends to the game, in high style and luxury, including TWO parking passes, although I am somewhat concerned about what food will be served. I've seen the catering menu at Joe Robbie Stadium (I refuse to call it Pro-Player of Jockey Shorts or whatever it is this year...Joe Robbie paid for it himself, so Joe Robbie it remains)...and it's not cheap.
Anybody care to pitch in? I am sorely tempted, let me tell you.

My Gators lost to Michigan State in the Citrus Bowl a few years back (2000)....so I'm truly glad you hit one out of the park against them for the SEC.
Did I hear Mike Bobo's name during the game? Is he an assistant coach for you all now? I LOVE it when the great players come back to their Alma Mater's to coach....very cool!
