For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Is Bush the worst president in 50 years?

Mr. Rove and Mr. Kristol were paired against Jacob Weisberg, editor in chief of the Slate Group, and British columnist Sir Simon Jenkins, of the Guardian....The most heated moments came during the debate over Mr. Bush's biggest decision - the 2003 invasion of Iraq. The president himself said in an interview this week that his "biggest regret" is that the intelligence upon which the invasion was based wrongly concluded that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. Even Mr. Kristol said that Mr. Bush has done "a horrible job of explaining what he's done and what the choices were." But he and Mr. Rove both maintained that while the initial occupation was mismanaged, the surge of troops begun in 2007 has placed the U.S. on the cusp of victory in Iraq. Former Bush adviser Karl Rove was greeted with hisses as he took the podium at a formal debate on New York's Upper West Side, but he helped attract a sold-out crowd. "We've won the war," Mr. Kristol said.

Is Bush the Worst President in 50 Years?

Anyone who asks that question never lived through the Carter Administration.

Let's review:

hostages in Iran (failed rescue attempt), high unemployment, high interest rates, rationing gas

While I'm afraid that Bush has in his final days moved the country more toward socialism via bailouts, you have to give the man credit for eliminating an evil dictator in the world and moving Iraq toward freedom.  Additionally, while gas prices went through the roof, it was always available, unlike the Carter Administration and their odd day/even day rationing. Also, Bush got two good guys on the SCOTUS.

The MSM and the left have tried to destroy this man and make him look a fool.  But he has handled the USA much better than some of his predecessors.

My list of the greatest

My list of the greatest presidents of my lifetime (I'm excluding Johnson, since I was a baby during his administration):

1) Reagan - way ahead of the others

2) Dubya - the War on Terror and tax cuts get him here, despite too much spending and other problems.

3) Nixon - Without Watergate, he might have made #2.

4) Bush the Elder - If he hadn't reneged on his tax pledge...

5) Ford - Nice guy, but not enough accomplishments to hang your hat on.

6) Clinton - Well, he was better than Carter.

7) Carter - will Obama make him the second worst of this bunch? Only time will tell.

“There are no easy answers' but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right.” - Ronald Reagan (1964 Republican Convention)

Nixon

I always felt kind of sorry for Nixon.  He's always looked on as Tricky Dicky, but his administration actually had some good points to it.

NIXON

He was another spend-a-holic but a foreign policy superstar...any Republican President that joins in massive wasteful spending-expansion of the gigantic federal govt really gets a major ding from me.

Lib lite is never ever the solution...GWB was another spending doormat.

Actually and factually the Repub Presidents should have vetoed 90% of spending bills...and also demanded NO Omnibus massive pork-filled bills...they failed us.

They failed us. They failed us. They failed us.

So here we are... and we all know where that is ....

He was the worst president

He was the worst president ever before he ever set foot in office.  If since then he has moved up to only the worst in the last 50 years, pretty soon he'll be ranked as one of the best.

He inherited a stock market crash and a weakened national security system.  He had his election sullied by the theft attempt and subsequent whining by Algore, and had the Senate stolen from his party by Jumpin' Jim Jeffords. Plus, he was stabbed in the back by John McCain over the judicial nominees...

Still he gave us a tax cut, a recovering economy - until the Democrat Housing Bubble burst, and he has terrorists on the defensive.

He got re-elected in spite of the worst attacks any president has ever had to face.

His only real problems were trying to work with the Dems rather than stand up to them and depending on his own party to stand up for the platform.

History (except for public school revisionist history) will judge the 2007 Democrat Congress far harsher than it will Bush.

Faulty WMD Intelligence??

I recall Bush's 2004 State of the Union Address, in which he declared that "God came to the White House", and "Instructed him to invade Iraq". Now if I were president and God came to guide me, I'd sure listen. But I know that you all know that God payed no such visit.

So stop blaming the Lord, George, for faulty intelligence. It was Dick in an outfit, and he was after the oil.

We need a better class of troll, here.

Welcome to NewsBusters, troll.

It was Dick in an outfit, and he was after the oil.

If Dick was after the oil, why did I pay over $4/gal for nearly three months this past summer? Hmm?

Oh, and exactly how many barrels of oil has Dick and his big oil buddies taken out of Iraq since we went in there?

-Dave

When in doubt, always side with freedom, as it sure beats the hell out of the alternative.

Troll this...

You paid 4plus this past summer because Dick wanted you to. Saudi Arabia said there was no reason for any price over 75/ barrel, yet Exxon Mobil wallowed in record profit.

But it's good to see that the War in Iraq is now paying for itself, as we were told it would.

You are an economic illiterate, government-schooled troll.

The spike in oil prices was due mostly to a sharp increase in demand that the supply couldn't keep up with.

The tight supply was in part a result of the lefty politicians being in bed with the anti-free enterprise eco-nuts, who had been rather busy impeding the exploration and development of our own oil and energy  resources over the last 40 years.

BTW, Dick Cheney has about the same level of influence over the price of oil as I do.

-Dave

When in doubt, always side with freedom, as it sure beats the hell out of the alternative.

Funny think about Cheney...

is that he seems to draw hatred from the left for some unknown reason.

Where I work, the libs hate Cheney. I ask why and they all say "Haliburton" and he's a "union buster" out to get us on the Union Pacific Railroad (he was on the board of directors), but can never say exactly why.

The left wing union nuts in UP seem to think that Cheney's screwing them out of something, they just think that since he's a "Bushie" he's out to destroy the union, cut pay etc, all because he was once a board member. Some actually think he holds secret meetings with UP CEOs.

He has no influence here either but you can't convince union nuts. The reality is that it's the Dimmocrat union leadership, not Bush/Cheney/Repubs that are shafting the employees.

You are obviously a troll,

You are obviously a troll, since it is common knowledge that Karl Rove is responsible for the price of oil going up, not a puppet like Dick Cheney.

You need to get someone a little less-retarded than you to update your talking points, pumpkin. It's embarrassing. Perhaps your mom can help?

Unless you wish to remain

Unless you wish to remain sounding like an ignorant infant, you may want to open up a few textbooks and learn some basic Economics.  The reason he had to pay $4/gallon of gas for 3 months is that increased demand worldwide shortened supply.  When demand exceeds supply, prices rise to put demand and supply in equilibrium.  The inflated prices caused individuals to make conscious decisions not to purchase gasoline...so overall demand weakened.  Now that demand relative to supply has decreased significantly, prices have gone down to put supply and demand in equilibrium.  Of course, he still wouldn't have had to pay $4/gallon for 3 months if self-described "environmentalists" hadn't done everything in their power to prevent more domestic drilling (an increase in supply) to meet the new demand.

THE LESSON HERE

You can expect EVERY Repub admin from now on to be treated like GWB the  past 6 years...its worked fairly well to trash a man 24-7...so they moved on the Palin...their tough part soon will be enduring month after month of ineffective radical secular socialist policies without running out of lib-media excuses for Xerxes.

June should be quite interesting...I suspect millions will be enraged that Xerxes' policies have not worked and their retirement funds are still 30% down, many hundreds of billions.

Let's see the libs with these funds hold their tongues for a year or two.

Who will be the strawman to hate down the road? The 9% dufus democrat congress?

Gonna be a very tough summer for the lib-media. Mark it.

I initialy opposed the Iraq war (I wanted bin Laden's head)

It did however end the untenable position we were in of having to patrol Iraq's "no fly zones" and all of the many other ways in which we had to contain Iraq and Saddam Hussein in the aftermath of the first Persian Gulf war.

I wonder how much money we spent each month in our efforts to contain Saddam Hussein's Iraq during the Clinton Presidency and it's relation to how much money we've spent for the current war. The two are related, but we never hear about how much money we already were spending on Iraq prior to the current war.

This victory in Iraq finally ends the uncertain and untenable position our country and Iraq was left in from the aftermath of the Persian Gulf war.

Since President Bush has taken so much grief over this war, it's a good thing that victory was realized while he is still President.

 http://www.aei.org/publications/pubID.23916/pub_detail.asp

Containment required the continuous engagement of a potent U.S. military force in southern Turkey, the Middle East and the Persian Gulf. The United States devoted roughly 28,000 troops, 30 naval vessels, 200 military aircraft and other equipment to Iraqi containment efforts prior to the pre-war buildup. We estimate the economic cost of these military resources to be about $14.5 billion per year. Based on our assessment of the likely duration of a dangerous regime in Iraq, absent external intervention, this annual flow translates into an expected present value of nearly $300 billion. Hence, containment was also a costly option for the United States, even under the favorable assumption that it would be completely effective in achieving its national security goals.

Carter holds the distinction of worst president with Hoover.

As far as President Bush is concerned, sure there have been disappointments, but, look at how much has been piled on by world events, 9/11, natural disasters and the MSM. I thought President Reagan was treated shabbily, but, nothing like the shameful manner in which Bush has been, regardless of his action. President Bush won't make it into my top twenty. The Simpsons

Is anyone here a fan of The Simpsons?  I think this past week's episode was the worst I've ever seen.  The premise had Homer thinking that some Muslim neighbors were terrorists.  It was such a poor mishmash of a show.  Maybe the show is past its sell-by date because I hadn't heard anyone talk about that episode.

I agree.  My wife and I

I agree.  My wife and I are huge Simpsons fans and happily tolerate the occasional nugget of lefty social commentary to watch intelligent, funny satire.  What I won't tolerate, however, is poor script writing.  The episode on Sunday had a very cut-and-paste feel to it, as if it were kept in the script bank to be produced when the writers were short of ideas.  It was badly written with trite, unoriginal, simplistic jokes...like Family Guy.  But after almost 20 years as a great show, the Simpsons is certainly entitled to lay an egg every once in a while.

MIddle East Stagnation

We (the western world) allowed 9/11 to happen. We allowed it to happen because we allowed the Middle East to remain a sewer for radical Islam to exist and to propagate. All the 9/11 terrorists came from the middle east and from countries that were our allies. The dynamics of the Middle East had to change for there ever to be hope for the elimination of radical islam.

By eliminating Saddam Hussein a message was sent to other leaders that the status quo was not acceptable. It appears that Syria is getting closer to negotiating a peace.

The one remaining problem in the region is Iran who is the patron state for Hezzbollah, Hamas, and all other radical islam groups. Iran is now isolated.

Years from now Iraq will be viewed as the turning point in middle east peace.

I think its way too early

I think its way too early to make bklanket staements about President Bush's legacy, I mean his term is not even done yet.  Furthermore given the hostile press we might have to wait 10 to 20 years before a fair assement comes out.  I feel confident Bush will make it into the top 5 Presidents.  But, I dont have the perspective that I will have in 10 years.

Obama will, given his track record so far, go down with Carter as one of teh worst.  Most likely because of teh same failings as Carter, that of indecisiveness.  Obama will waffle and take credit for what he has not accomplished and blame others for his screwups.

Bush is now blamed for all screwups and gets almost none of the credit he is due.  Part of this is because we do not have a "historical" perspective of him and part is due to teh hostile press.  For an example witness teh accolade Obama is getting already for solving ME problems he has nothing to do with.  We must remember Iran is a small inconsequential country according to Obama.

Bush has hardly been a great President.  The Administration's unwillingness or inability to more forcefully articulate the justifications for its strategies to the American people has allowed the media to frame the stories to meet its ideological objectives.  Rather than fighting back against the unprecedented bias of the Press Corps and challenging media members to back up their claims, the Bush Administration often chose to cower into a corner for fear of sounding partisan or to avoid the Press altogether.  The decision to hire the grossly incompetent Scott McClellan to replace Ari Fleischer illustrates how ill-prepared Bush was in matters of communication.  The likes of Terry Moran, David Gregory and Helen Thomas simply walked all over McClellan and this enabled partisan journalists to portray a failure of the communication of policy to be viewed as a failure of policy.  The Administration was far too defensive when it came to addressing frivolous accusations...it should have taken a page out of the Clinton playbook and been more aggressive towards the Press in dealing with the overblown Gonzalez/U.S. Attorney firing "scandal".  Scooter Libby was made to twist in the wind while Patrick Fitzgerald conducted his disgraceful show trial.  Bush let Ted Kennedy write the education bill.  He turned his back on those who elected him by insisting on pushing through an Amnesty Bill for Illegal Aliens.  To this day, he's stubbornly refused to pardon or commute the highly disproportionate sentences of former Border Patrol Agents Ramos and Compean.  He's allowed fear and populism to trump reason and sound economic priniciples by rushing through this panic bailout.  And he brought perhaps the most poisonous self-identification to the lexicon..."Compassionate" Conservative.  If you lack the comprehension to assert that Conservatism, by definition, is compassionate, you really have no business leading the Party.  That said, he is a very nice man who cut taxes to end the recession he inherited from the previous administration, who oversaw several years of positive economic growth, who appropriately responded to terrorist attacks upon this nation (attacks that could have been avoided if the previous Administration was interested in doing its job properly) and who did all this in the face of a hostile press and opposition party who attempted to make his Presidency illegitimate from day one.  Hands down, the worst President of the last 50 years (perhaps ever) was Jimmy "Misery Index" Carter.

Communication

I agree that the Bush administration was poor in communication.  If they had properly communicated, I would have control over my Social Security right now instead of getting a rate of return that is less than if I put it in a regular savings account.  All the Dems had to say was "Bush is going to lose your money" and the administration didn't do much to refute that claim.  All he had to do was come out and emphasize "You don't have to participate in this if you don't want to."

fitz...You've made very substantive and...

valid points, that I generally agree with.

That said, I have remained supportive of President Bush for two main reasons. First, what happened on 9/11 had an enormous effect on me and changed forever the way that I view the world, and President Bush's response immediately after and the measures that he has taken since to help keep this country safe are worth more to me than gold.

Secondly, as you mentioned in your post, President Bush is a very good, decent and honorable man who I believe has always done what he has felt in his heart was in the best interests of this country. Granted, he hasn't always been right, but I do believe that he has not acted in a self-serving way while in office, as Clinton did his entire 8 years as president.

These two reasons are why, despite his shortcomings in office, I continue to have respect for President Bush and what he has accomplished over the last 8 years.

I was so hoping Disney wasn't raising another Brittney Spears.

I haven't heard of any new Dakota Fanning movies in a while.  Maybe doing a rape scene for artistically appreciative pedophiles wasn't such a good idea after all.

There were three issues I

There were three issues I disagreed with Mr. Bush during his Presidency; immigration/border issues, stem-cell research and his lack of response to the hideous insults and disrespectful rhetoric afforded him by the MSM. The first two issues, while important, could be debated. But, the last issue has been the source of most of my frustration throughout his Presidency. I would have never sat silent if my critics had showed such disrespect. Because, no matter what, Mr. Bush is due the decency and respect he deserves as our President.
I think Carter was the worst President this country has ever had to suffer through, but nonetheless, he was afforded much more respect by the media and the US Citizens than Bush. While it's bad enough to see your President savaged by a bunch of pencil-necked geeks, it's even worse to have him sit by silently. There's just so much "taking it on the chin" you can do.

Much of the media and most of Hollywood should be tried for treason.

Bush the worst president in

Bush the worst president in 50 years?

A gross misstatement.  He's clearly the worst in the last 200 years!

Kidding, of course.  The judgment of history will be more balanced--and positive--than are contemporary assessments of the Bush presidency.

In my lifetime, Carter was the worst president, with Nixon close behind (not because of his [Nixon's] policies or intellect, but because he was psychologically unsuited for the job.)

Bush is the most disappointing president for me

It's not that he was a bad president, but damn! the opportunities he missed.  He let the wussypants Republicans spend money like Democrats (which is what they basically are....do you hear me McCain?), let the press and the DemonRats push him around like a half-a-sissy and made some stupid decisions on cabinet, judges, Iraq, etc.  Also, I cannot imagine a poorer communicator than Bush.  After 9/11, I though Bush would be the next Reagan.  He was just his father all over again.

I say it loud and clear....NO MORE BUSHES OR CLINTONS!

Disappointment

"Most disappointing president"

Ditto!  His global, open borders positions greatly disappointed.

However, for those who want him to be the worst, I am sorry to say he disappoints them too.

It is awfully hard to edge out Carter ( #1), Kennedy--(most of you may not remember, but his first 100 days, at that time was rated as the worst ever, even by pundits who liked him), Johnson, Clinton, just to name a few.

So poor GW cannot even win "Worst President".

PS I am still convinced that late , great Hussein had chemical weapons which were moved.

Bush spent money like a crazy person

George W. spent money like a neurotic woman feeling fat. ANY conservative that can blithefully ignore that isn't much of a conservative IMHO.

er...Cool Bird,

er...Cool Bird,

you ask...

And LBJ orchestrating the addiction of millions, for generations on Welfare was a good thing?

LBJ's "war on poverty" was much like his war in southeast Asia:  good intentions...not so good results.  Thus, his must be considered a largely failed presidency.

But what does any of that have to do with my original comment?  Johnson [in my view] still ranks ahead of Carter and Nixon.

The Libor

I see some here that may know the answer to this for me regarding the libor rate, if I am using the correct phrase here...I see it was at 1.89% today, I do not for the life of it understand why our credit card companies go by this instead of the fed rate...can someone explain why we use this, or anyway, the two card companies I have called said this, which to me is maddening, I always thought we used our own countries rate...that is what I understood all these years listening to hearings in congress.

I have asked why this is when I call about the rate going up, when the Fed is going down, I keep track of all of this with our cards, but have yet to have a person explain why we do this yet.

Thanks if anyone knows.

Carter was the worst

I would say Carter was the worst in the last 50 years, Reagan the best, and George W. probably in the bottom 3. Without 9-11, and the fact that George W. prevented another terrorist attack on U.S. soil for 7 years, he'd have been an absolute failure as President. His only legacy, that I can see, is his war on terror.

I'd put Nixon in the top 3.

Lets see in the last 50

Lets see in the last 50 years we have had : Eisenhower, Kennedy, LBJ, Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Bush the elder, Clinton, Bush W and now Obiewan.  So we have 8 in the last 50 not counting Obiewan.  Of course this exercise is entirely subjective and depends on teh lens you are viewing from but GWB would be number 2 behind Reagan.

Was he a conservative, no but he was a good President considering what teh Presidents job is.  In teh big scheme of history Bush the younger will be viewed as one of the best, because like all Presidents he dealt with what was put on his plate but Bush performed above teh crowd.

Traitor

Jimmy is by far the worst. He's still adding on to his legacy as a traitor and anti-Seimite. He should be exiled to live with the Palestinians who could show him a thing or two about making bombs. My only hope for BO's term is that he won't outdo Carter but the chances are slim.

I have hope too that the terrorists won't hit us again but with the way things are going in the world I think the chances for that are slimmer. The hatred for America is building and now with more America haters getting ready to take over our country I fear for the future of this great country. The liberals are weak and think peace is achieveable everywhere. They will put us in more jeopardy than Bush could ever have done. If we take another hit will BO blame Bush? He won't be able to and even the fools that voted for their messiah might rethink that America was safer because of George W. Bush.

God help us.

I make my living off the evening news...

Ok heres the thing about the worst presidents in history -- they don't get elected to second terms. Ever. And when was the last time we were attacked by terrorists? And who won in Iraq?

But Bush's biggest problem was dealing with the media's traditional portrayal of Republicans. The media were successful in making him look like the worst president in history, Ill give them that.

Basically the media has two generic ways to characterize Republicans. If said Republican is physically unattractive, then they become a symbol and the media projects onto that unlucky bastard all their malevolent thoughts and opinions, continually harping on the evilness of that ugly son of a bitch. And if they're physically attractive then they get painted as retards who don't know their ass from their elbow.

Bottom line if your a Republican, then your either dumb or evil, depending on what you look like.
