The Media Research Center today officially announced the Free Speech Alliance, a gathering of a multitude of organizations and hundreds of thousands of individual citizens dedicated to ensuring that the Censorship Doctrine, mis-named the "Fairness" Doctrine, is never again reinstated.

The Free Speech Alliance member organizations are themselves engaged in a wide array of issues, but they all recognize the preeminent importance of defending the First Amendment and protecting free speech from government censorship, a fundamental Constitutional safeguard.

The innocuously named "Fairness" Doctrine was a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulation enacted in 1949. Promising "equal time" on broadcast radio, it instead resulted in zero time and silenced political speech. Stations avoided political discussion so as to stay clear of the Censorship Doctrine's onerous regulations. President Ronald Reagan rescinded the Doctrine in 1987; since then, conservative talk radio has flourished, and liberals have hated every minute of it.

Over the last two years, many left-wing elected officials have expressed their desire to see the Censorship Doctrine reinstated, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Senators Chuck Schumer, Jeff Bingaman, John Kerry and Dick Durbin and Congressman Dennis Kucinich. Congresswoman Louise Slaughter has drafted legislation (the MEDIA Act) that would codify the Fairness Doctrine in law.

Media Research Center Founder and President L. Brent Bozell, III:

"Liberals in Washington are gearing up to silence the opposition and reinstate the Censorship Doctrine, a.k.a. the ‘Fairness' Doctrine. Owning all the rest of the news media isn't enough for the Left; it appears they will insist on censoring the lone voices of dissent. That's why the Free Speech Alliance is so important; organizations and individual citizens dedicated to defending the First Amendment and protecting free speech."

Americans for Tax Reform President Grover G. Norquist:

"Nothing should worry people more than the government toying with the idea of limiting free speech. Talk radio is the megaphone through which the people can communicate with large numbers of their fellow Americans. The fact that any elected official could feel comfortable calling for that megaphone to be silenced is a frightening display of the arrogance of power. ‘Speaking truth to power,' as liberals like to say, is just as valid when they are the power and the American people should not have their rights infringed upon simply because some politicians don't like what they have to say."

Americans for Prosperity President Tim Phillips:

"We're ready and willing to fight it out with the left over the proper size, scope, and intrusiveness of government, and we cannot allow advocates of big government to shut down political speech they disagree with. That's what's at stake with reintroduction of the Fairness Doctrine, and it's un-American and unacceptable."

First?

I hope I was the first to sign the petition!

Count me in!!

Count me in!!

I signed, too

Will someone please tell me exactly HOW MANY amendments we are going to have to defend????

"If we conservatives moved to those seven non-existent States, the government couldn’t find us and tax us to death!"

Not only amendments, but we

Not only amendments, but  the Posse Commitatus Act  may come under attack too!

I guess Obama's Civilian Security Force can't be ready in time....

Thanks, MB

Scary, isn't it?  It's touted to "protect" us, but I can only think of one word:  Gestapo.

"If we conservatives moved to those seven non-existent States, the government couldn’t find us and tax us to death!"

Thank you

Thank you for providing this opportunity. I signed the petition immediately, made a small donation, and I hope this has a huge snowball effect. We shouldn't have to be doing this, but we do, and to show our strength and resolve, I hope there are a lot of others out there that feel the same way I do!

ON BOARD!

ON BOARD!

The "Fairness" Doctrine

I've been a radio broadcaster for many years (now, God help me) I labor in the trenches of Public Radio.  One very few conservatives doing so.  And it's a long, uninteresting story.

Anyway, I remember what it was like to work under the "Fairness" Doctrine, and we just avoided controversy like the plague.

But here's my idea: If this draconian clamp-down on free speech actually does go into effect, it'll be time for broadcasters who care about freedom to grow a pair, form a united front, and engage in civil disobedience.  In other words: Hey Pelosi! Take your 'Fairness'  Doctrine and shove it! Go ahead! Shut us down!  And when the storm troopers show up to do so, then the public will see what the left is really all about!

Of course, that won't work unless there's a bold, united front... broadcasters who agree, in writing, in advance that they will NOT succumb.

I've already signed the petition.  Just let me know what else I can do, and I'll be there!

Censorship Doctrine

This should be a Hot Button issue for All Americans, not just Conservatives. I've already signed the Petition and I blogged about it a few weeks ago on my site. What surprised me the most, was the Liberals "shoulder shrug" response to it. Apparently Liberals only care about Free Speech when you are insulting a Republican or a Christian........

How many Amendments are we Going to need to protect....

<blockquote>"Will someone please tell me exactly HOW MANY amendments we are going to have to defend???? "<blockquote>

I'm thinking quite a few...starting with the First for both the Censorship Doctrine and Separation of Church and State (Gay Marriage), and of course the 2nd amendment will be next, then with Obama's plan for his Civil Security Force, I'm thinking we should start looking at the 3rd Amendment now, Obama makes a point of saying he wants those members "living in the community"....The Fourth Amendment could be an issue as well since anyone who detracts from The One could find themselves being both searched and seized....

Don't worry though, These Criminals won't Touch the Fifth Amendment....

Signed & gave also

Signed & gave $15. When will the next assault on guns happen? I HOPE (lol) Obama gives up on that idea!

1st Amendment

Should the democrats be so foolish and pass this act which is obviously a violation of the 1st amendment the law would surely be given a Supreme Court review. With 5 and possible 6 Supreme jurist who understand the limits our goverment can put on the 1st amendment I am confident this law will be struck down. Which is ample reason why Obama should veto this bill. When Obama takes his oath of office he will pledge to protect and defend the Constitution.

Hmmmm, checking again,

Hmmmm, checking again, hmmmm, nope-this one seems to be missing from the above list:

American Civil Liberties Union

Now, if you were from a different planet, wouldn't you think...?

Anyway, did you all hear about the 15,000-20,000 Regular Army troops they want to keep stateside to fight terrorists?

Anybody else here find that suspicious?  If other Righties call me a kook on this one, I won't be offended.  Really.  I'd actually feel a lot better.
