For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Down and down and down we go!

Stocks plunged Thursday morning, after a report showing U.S. jobless claims at a 16-year high gave investors a reason to extend the selloff.

In the S&P 500, we're close to the October 2002 low. If we break that, we'd be at the lowest point since early 1997.

Are we having fun yet?

Wonder when all those rich libs are going to start putting their money where their mouths and votes were.  Say this five times really fast: "Soros sold short!"

You bet but also . . . .

. . .  this began the day after Obama's election. Doesn't that tell you something? No Confidence.

And in the time since his annointment to the throne his highness has yet to select a Secretary of Treasury and begin to give any indication that he has a clue what the economic situation is and what should be done other than some very general idea of a stimulus package and a very general idea of a bailout for the Big Three Detroit auto companies.

I contend that you can pin all kinds of statistical blame for this downward slide but it masks the fact that it is a continued vote of No-Confidence in a man who is to be President with the thinnest resume in American history.

I agree.  I don't know a

I agree.  I don't know a lot about the market, but I do know that it rises and falls on expectations.  What this shows then, is that they are not expecting good things from an Obama administration.

For those of you in the know, who do you think would be the best and worst selections he could make for Treasury Secretary?

John Galt

Indeed, motherbelt.  I am "bottom feeding" at the moment, but as much as the stock plunge is happening based on the expectations of lower profits/losses and uncertainty, I maintain that much of that plunge can be directly attributed to the election of a Socialist government.

The ONLY thing Socialists know how to do is to steal from others.  One of the things they have targeted for theft are capital gains - anything not a wage, salary, or tip.  This includes profits made on the stock market.  What has happened since 5 November - and even before that - is that a lot of investors are saying "Screw it.  We've had fun.  Bye."  Supply and demand takes effect, and there is now a lot of supply (shares of stock) and not much demand (do YOU want to wear a bulls-eye on your back by owning shares of stock?).

John Galt lives.  And he will arrive in America shortly after 1100 CST on 20 January.

Apparently all the rich

Apparently all the rich liberals who pushed for Obama as president don't really have that much faith in his abilities either.  They seem to be sitting on their wallets.  Where is all the "feel good, feel great, tomorrow is going to be such a better day" uptick in optimism that this election was supposed to engender?  Is this the first sign of buyer's remorse?  We need to see Matt Damon, David Letterman, George Clooney, and a host of other rich endorsers actually show up on the floor of the exchange and start publicly pumping their money into the stock market to show that their's wasn't just lip service and they're backing their man with their wallets as well as their words.  You can't lay this downturn off on President Bush.  This is strictly a reaction from money managers to a man who has publicly stated he wants to redistribute their wealth to people who don't work and wants to tax 401Ks.

"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last."  - Sir Winston Churchill

Also . .

Also to a man who never ran a government entity - never ran a company - never ran a military unit - and, frankly, never even ran a lemonade stand as a kid.

We just handed to th keys to the oval office to a guy who does not qualify for even a middle management job in any industry.

Are we having fun yet? -

Are we having fun yet? - No!!!!  I have a few Exxon stocks I got from my dad and have seen them lose 20K since I got them.  I really want to sell em and get out, but 6 months ago they were ahead.  I know if I ask for advice I will get conflicting answers.  I might sell som options on them thinking the stocks will tank.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

In good times or bad.

I have lost money in the stock market. I am going to have Shoulda Woulda Coulda etched on my gravestone. Besides it's George Bush's fault LOL.

Lady on the Airplane

I was sitting next to an elderly African American woman on JetBlue yesterday and she was watching on those little TV's the fact that the market went down again over 400 points.

She said, "Oh my" and was greatly distressed. I asked her what was wrong. She said she was hoping to retire and was wondering why Obama was saying anything. She became very concerned that her retirement would all be gone soon and not there for retirement.

I asked her is she had to retire this up coming year. She said, "Not this year. I'm talking about 5 years from now."

So much for confidence from African Americans who voted for the great one.

Brother- in - law

My brother-in-law is pretty wealthy and has been he retired for years. Worked hard all his life to amass his "fortune". Now he just lost $600,000 in the market. Nice. But let's continue to "spread the wealth", Barry boy. Give the "poor" some more of those 3% mortgages that caused all this. That way my brother-in-law, and others like him, can stop living so largely and some lazy, alcoholic, druggy dirtbag can have the rewards of his labor. Socialism stinks!

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

What could Bama say to Mama?

For someone who just ran against Bush, what can BAMA say to the gentlewoman?

"It's about the economy, stupid?"

Nah, too much like Clinton, our first black president! \sarc

Umm,  how about, "You NEED CHANGE, so we will steal your 401(k) and give you only CHANGE in exCHANGE!"

Yeah, I thinks that works. That will make her feel much better about her retirement in five years.

This is "redistribution of

This is "redistribution of wealth" at it's best. You might want to rethink that P.E. Obama.

"The theory of the Communists may be summed up in the single sentence: Abolition of private property." Karl Marx

we're still screwed

The trends Research Center is predicting a depression for 2009 that rivals if not worse than the great depression. I know how it sounds at face value but with the continuing downward spiral of Wall Street, I wouldn't be surprised if it does get that bad.
My 401 is in the most conservative mix possible and it's still losing money. Down nearly 18 percent so far. I just hope it doesn't drop below 25 percent loss. We could never rebound from a loss more than 25.

The only plus side to this is oil has decreased but with plans by the dems to artificially increase the price of gas with taxes, I expect the relief we get now to be temporary. This will add to the burden and drive us deeper into depression.

If the Trends Center is right--things are about to go from bad to worse and no government can fix it. Only hinder our recovery.

Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

Not happening

The mainstream media if ignorant about The Great Depression: what caused it and what got us out of it.

They are also recklessly labeling this  recession as the worst economic situation since the depression which is also false. The Carter Stagflation saw double digit unemployment, interest rates, out of control double digit inflation.

What we are seeing now is a complete lack of confidence in Obama who has yet to announce who his economic team is which could instill some confidence back into the market if the selections are appropriate.

I hope Obama does not make a mistake because his depression would be mine and yours as well.

The Difference between Recession and Depression

A Recession is when your neighbor has lost his job and is out of work. A Depression is when you've lost your job and out of work.

We haven't had a real recession in this country since 1980 (No the Clinton -elect me it's the economy stupid- recession wasn't real and doesn't count) That recession started in 1972 or 1973. We had 7 crummy years of stagflation, high interest rates and double digit unemployment (Not to mention the two oil crunches standing in lines on odd even days) with the stock market tanking 60 percent from the high of 69 to the low of 74. Only those 40 ish or above remember that. There is 28 years of stress in this fault line. We keep trying to tame the business cycle and really don't know how to do it. But recessions are probably necessary to right the financial wrongs and excesses. I hope this one will not be a very bad one but that being said these things can last a while. No confidence in this administration already is probably not helping.

GAT--

What did cause the great Depression??

What got us out of it???

Why did or who did or what did in the stock market--why did it collapse??

The stock market collapse

The stock market collapse in '29 was from 321 to about 100 - pretty significant in those days.

What turned a recession into the Great Depression was initially Herbert Hoover trying to impose government solutions and protection policies which only backfired.

FDR came in with this New Deal idea which was his way of "experimenting" with different government imposed ideas to solve it. What it was were ideas that came from far left thinkers who were influence by Stalinist Russia. The "experiment" was basically throwing whatever they could up against the wall and see what stuck. It was reckless and massive government intervention which never allowed the market to correct itself and only deepened the time and extent of the initial recession. So when the ignorant media associate Obama with FDR we better hope he is not.

What got us out of it? Our entry into World War II. Prior to that the government was already assuming that this depression with its very high unemployment levels would be a permanent economic condition in the U.S.

Great so if we do actually

Great so if we do actually go into a depression our only hope is another World War.

...and the rate things are going I could see both happening.

GAT--

Thanks-- I wasn't trying to trick, but I did know the last part, that production for war equipment and the war itself got us out of it.

I was a little boy, but I do remember my Dad and other family members being out of work, moving to find work etc.

Your explanation of New Deal opened some memories--CCC, WPA and a few others.

My Dad once mentioned that the stock market was the most noticeable collapse, at first, because people bought stock, in today's adevertising parlance, "with no money down".

I have come to the conclusion that teher are no "fixed policies" that will keep an economy solid. Adjustments must be made from time to time based on conditions to keep us healthy. Bailouts are not the answer. (IMHO)

Common Cold

A recession is like the common cold.

If you are a living breathing human being you are going to periodically going to catch a cold.

Sometimes the more medication you use the long it will take to clear up. In the end it has to run its course and correct itself.

That should have been the greatest lesson of The Great Depression which is that it is periodically something any capitalistic free market will incur and the best solution is no solution. The beauty of the free market is that it is self correcting.

Recessions

I liken recessions to finishing a massive dinner.  We can't just go on and eat, and eat, and eat (unless we are teenagers!); we have to stop and take the time to digest the food.  You will eat again, but you have to take the after dinner nap and let it all process.

BINGO! Gat....I started

BINGO! Gat....I started working for a large petrochemical company when Carter was in, and am still with them....but it got dicey for a few years with Carter in there. .

The Carter years were, for the economy, horrible to say the least.  I bought my first house in 1978 at about 13% interest..with excellent credit!  Inflation was unbleieveable then.

Fortunately, I live in an area of the country that, for the most part has been recession proof.  The early's 80's notwithstanding. But now, I am fixing to retire in a couple of years and the economy is heading right back to where it was when I started!  I have always bought my company's stock and have never sold.  I have always been in the market long term, but man-o-man this does have me irked.

My, and others my age, work history could be used for a study in American economics.  How cyclical it has been.  I graduated from HS in 1974 and I know there are tons of folks just like me with basically the same story.

I reckon we'll muck our way through this as we did Carter. But I don't like the feel of it just the same.  Politicians! Can't live with and you can't...run them off.

I was newly married and had

I was newly married and had to wait to buy a house because the mortgage interest rates were so high for so long.

I decided some time ago not to retire - ever. I always wanted to be independent and in control and not rely on any sort of fixed income.

I think if you can hold off retirement for at least a 2 years I would.

If I were to guess, Democrats are going to control their own instincts and for one reason only - re-election - not Obama's - their own. I am surprised (pleasantly) to read comments from certain Democrats who are opposed to this bailout of the auto industry.

I also read that there is a return of Conservatives to Democratic ranks in the South. Even with 60 senators Reid will not have carte blanche on Obama's socialist policies.

So there is reason to believe that we will not sink into a depression as we did under FDR.

Your definition of "the

Your definition of "the most conservative mix possible" may need some redefinition. I saw this coming and put all my money in a AAA bond fund. It is only down -2.5% on the year. My plan is to not reinvest in equity markets until the lines at soup kitchens reach an average of at least 200 yards long. ;)

Protectionism

Much, if not all, of the evil we are experiencing is due to the "progressives" (a.k.a. "liberals"). I don't always agree with the likes of Pat Buchanan or Ron Paul, but I always felt that America is too eager to be involved around the world. What has all this "globalization" wrought? Now we have a new president who is a one-worlder, particularly with our money. Are the U.N., illegal immigration, Pan-Africanism , etc. just ruining America? And who is behind all this "expansion". Does the name George Soros scare you? It should.  He is Barry's puppet master.

Well when things get so bad

Well when things get so bad that people don't even have any capital gains to tax, the exalted one will ahve to scale back his plans, at least for that $800 billion he was planning on giving to the UN.

Unfortunately, he has a majority Dem congress, and you know they all think the way to raise more money is to raise taxes.

Mother, Just wait until

Mother, Just wait until Obama and Gore's carbon tax goes into effect.  I'm just glad the various industries will absorb all those additional costs of doing business and not pass them on to us.  Do you think all the dipsticks that voted for Obama to get that $1000 tax rebate will realize Al's laughing all the way to the bank when that money flows through them, to the power companies, and finally into the hand of Gore's carbon credit trading company?  As I type this, I'm sitting here with the temperature outside about 30 degrees below normal for this time of year, praying that global warming will eventually arrive in my neighborhood.

Just wait until Obama and Gore's carbon tax goes into effect.

From a Wall Street Journal article:

Obama Signals Tougher Regulations at Federal Agencies November 19, 2008

WASHINGTON -- President-elect Barack Obama is signaling by a combination of words and deeds that his administration will toughen regulations at federal agencies that oversee consumer products, environmental policy and workplace safety.

Mr. Obama has named a number of people to his transition teams for regulatory agencies who favor a firmer government hand in overseeing industry behavior.

[...]

"I think the agenda is going to be bold," said Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, who co-chaired Mr. Obama's national presidential campaign and is on the short list to take his Senate seat.

The transition team is looking at a number of "activists and advocates" to lead key agencies, including the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the EPA and the Department of Labor, she said.

[...]

Rep. Schakowsky said EPA regulation of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases as pollutants under the Clean Air Act was a strong possibility in the Obama Administration.

[...]

One potential candidate to head the EPA is California Air Resources Board Chairman Mary Nichols, who led her state's effort to implement a state law calling for a 30% cut in greenhouse-gas emissions from new cars by 2016.

[...]

"He has erected a multitude

"He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance." This is one of the complaints our founding fathers brought against King George in the Declaration of Independence. The sad thing is that we have allowed our federal legislature to do this to us for nearly 100 years now.

I wonder what impact on the world there would be if we (USA) insisted that all the war debt from both world wars were to be repaid. I do not know how it would match up to OUR current debt, but it would be a lot of money.

KEEP IN MIND

Klinton had only his 1st 2 years, from a slow standing start, to ruin the economy/culture with modern liberalism (secular socialism)...then Newt and the Repubs held the crazy secular socialist gorilla inside the garbage can...this time the Klintonids with a clueless radical socialist president and both houses of the royal congress will have no such restraints.

You just thought Jimmah Carter (look it up) was an economic and foreign policy nitemare that had consequences for decades (Iran and Diversity loans for starters).

The problem now is about 70% of the country does not believe the promises and lifelong philosophy espoused by Obama and the angry socialist herd will become reality. There is no evidence they have changed or will. Look at the staff chosen.

Taxzilla and the angry horde will make you Fax your congress often by the summer and pray daily for the 2010 change to change the congress.

This might be a silly question, did Obama ever go to his grandmother's funeral?

No

Barry did not go his grandmother's funeral or memorial service. He felt that he would be an imposition because of all the secret service.

Also notice that his beloved wife also never went to visit the sickly grandmother on two occasions.

makes you wonder exactly how much B.S. this Obama family values lifestyle is.

If you think clearly on

If you think clearly on this issue, you have to realize how stupid this man truly is.  His whole arguement to the cap-and-trade scheme and green technoolgies that will make him rich is that man is the driver of this coming global catastropy and must be the solution and yet he postulates that the Mayan culture was driven to extinction by their own ends.  I have yet to see the Mayan pictographs for plastic water bottles and SUVs on the sides of any temples or on the Discovery channel.  Having hiked to the top of a Mayan temple, I can see where a Hummer might indeed have been useful, just throw the sacrifice in the back and put it in low gear.  Maybe the decline of their culture was driven by environmental changes, but then as now, it was probably changes outside their control, and therefor outside their influence.

Good morning folks---

Good morning folks--- I am here this morning to solicit some financial help from you. I retired a couple of years ago. I decided to continue to spend as much as I used to when I had a paycheck. I bought new cars for myself, my wife and son. I give my son a generous allowance and he has not worked these past four years. We moved to a larger home. I have all the latest state-of-art technology, including a home theater. we eat out three times a week and travel quite a bit.

Here's my problem. I have payments I can no longer meet and I need a bailout.

I do own a company that makes handheld stereo-optic viewers for slides. For some reason, we haven't sold any for over ten years now.

Any help will be appreciated. I suggest you do it voluntarily as I am good friends with Paulson and I will get it by hook or that crook!

Great point! Unfortunately

Great point! Unfortunately there are probably many stories like that.

Auto makers

I'm against a "bailout" for the auto companies. But I do believe we must work something out for the good of the nation. The workers are Americans. If we had elected a conservative (or even a RINO like McCain), I think this would have been done. But with Barry and the Dems in charge, it'll be all or nothing. The money may even go elsewhere and the American worker will ultimately get screwed. I'll bet if you polled those workers, most would say "compromise". But, as usual, the few are running the many. Sad.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

I agree. The problem they

I agree. The problem they have is the same problem all retail sectors have which is credit. In their case it is far more important than it is in other sectors.

But the reason their problem crtitical and it is not so much for the foreign auto companies is that their business model is better.

What I would like to see is not going to happen and that is putting Mitt Romney in charge of this auto bail out. He has experience turning around companies, and his father was not only governor of Michigan but was CEO of the old American Motors Company.

No Bailout, let them fail

I could careless about overpaid union workers and uncompetitive suck companies that don't make products people want to buy. GM should go into bankrupcy and someone should buy them that can run a company without unions.

It sounded good at first! I

It sounded good at first! I had a bailout idea I thought would work, but after further scrutiny it doesn't seem to have merit. Bush was saddeled with a broken down military, but still won the war in Iraq. We now have used up almost all of our military hardware. I lived thru the auto/miltary campaign during WW2, and it was something to behold. It made you truly proud to be an American. Why not bailout our auto industry now by giving them some big contracts to resupply our military? This is where my idea falls flat. In the 40's the auto industry was run by engineers. And very innovative engineers I might add. Today the auto industry is run by bean counters. What's even worse, these bean counters can't count!

I'm not so sure the bean counters can't count. I think it's more along the lines of... they are told how and what to count by their superiors.

Actually, you may want to

Actually, you may want to rethink that part about the good of the country.  Read what Sen. Inhofe discovered.  Any bailout for the automakers just like the bank one will not be for it's intended purpose.

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, starving the poor one gallon of ethanol at a time. Fill your tank with E85 and cull a village.

 Iveseenitall,Here's a

Here's a question: If a barrel of oil goes down to $8 a barrel like it did in the 1980's is anyone willing to bail our oil company's out?

I didn't think so.

Nobody gave a damn about us in the 1980's when we weren't altogether sure we'd stay in business much longer.

So go ahead and put a huge "windfall profit tax" on us.  The next thing that happens is ALL the big petrochemical plants will pull out lock, stock, and barrel and move to Mexico. Or Central America somewhere.

I don't know how much plainer I can state it.  If the Obami/Pelosi/Reid triplets think they can call these huge compay's bluff and get away with it, then have at it.

I think most of them have just been waiting for an excuse anyway.  And there goes all the charity work these compay's do, United Way, UNCF, etc.  That'll all come to a halt.

I just hope I retire before the idiots in DC make a stupid move.

I had no idea! Obama prepares to cripple the economy:

Obama: The Green Revolution Will Start With Cap-and-Trade Scheme (The Wall Street Journal)

Censored Global Warming Videos

Yep

Just wait until Cap and Trade puts the REVERSE on the Economy. If we're not headed there already, we'll go even faster!

They could have told us so

The liberal, white guilt media did not once tell us about Obama's Marxism.  Overlooked his education, his mentors, his associations and choices just so they can feel good about themselves and beat Republicans(there was only 1 conservative on the ballot). Now we have, what MSM memeber Brokaw calls, "an unknown", who believes, in all modesty of course, that the Founders had it wrong, by developing "negative" rights ather than "positive" redistributive ones, and one wonders why the market is going to hell? Afterall, in the "Principles of Communism", Engels, in a question and answer format discusses some of the major points of the "Manifesto".Question 25WHAT IS THE ATTITUDE OF THE COMMUNISTS TO THE OTHER POLITICAL PARTIES OF OUR TIME?  In America, where a democratic constitution has already been established, the communists must make common cause with the party which will turn this constitution against the bourgeoisie and use it in the interest of the proletariat. Sounds like the Soros, MoveOn, ACORN far left hijacking to me. Question 18 WHAT WILL BE THE COURSE OF THIS REVOLUTION? Above all, it will establish a democratic constitution and through this the direct or indirect dominance of the proletariatt.  After discussing England, France and Germany he went on; Democracy would be wholly valueless  to the proletariat IF IT WERE NOT IMMEDIATELY USED AS A MEANS FOR PUTTING THROUGH MEASURES DIRECTED AGAINST PRIVATE PROPERTY AND ENSURNING THE LIVELIHOOD OF THE PROLETARIAT. Do "tax credits" for persons without taxable income paid then to them, in cash,, sound like that?  Where's Soros and the other socialist big money people?  Their assets are offshore, in tax exempt bonds or in "hard" assets like gold.  The rest of the useful idiots that helped and facilitaed this diaster will just be collateral damage for the success of the revolution, without a shot being fired. As things now stand, what, if anything, can legally stop them?

I hate to say it

Janet Napolitano for Homeland Security Secretary???

Can somebody explain to me what in this woman's background qualifies her for this position??

Oh, wait...I know...She's a governor of a border state, right?

Well, that sure explains it...

We're screwed...

Huh!

Oh well we knew this was coming but our friends wouldn't listen.

Unfortunately, enough of "our friends" voted for "The One"...

and now we have a joke like Napolitano as HS Secretary to deal with...

Napolitano for HHS

Well, when I heard the name Napolitano I thought it was the judge and not the gov.  Oh well, I asked throughout the campaign what BHO's position on homeland security was going to be and was told he supports the Boumedine decision and trusts the Courts to protect us, you know like the Clinton years, we issue subpoenas they provide chaos and death.  You know less than 50 terrorists have ever been indicted and tried?  That bin Laden and Shiek Kalied Mohammed were under indictment BEFORE 9/11? If the MSM is going to portray BHO as the next coming of FDR,does this selection make you want to play, 'Happy Days Are Here Again?" 233 years after Lexington and Concord,RIP AMERICA

i think she can see mexico

i think she can see mexico from her front porch, y'betcha!

Better Question

what in this woman's background qualifies her for this position??

What in Obama's background qualifies him to understand who would be best qualified for the Secretary of Homeland Security position?

Oh, that's a given...and that's the problem...

Judgement, judgement, judgement and experience, experience, experience...Or the lack thereof.

This why I and many others didn't vote for Obamessiah. He doesn't have a clue, and has and will continue to surround himself with others who also don't have a clue.

Like I said...We're screwed.

Surviving An Obama Presidency! Keep maybe a shotgun or two around the house out in the open. When the goons come for your guns tell them that's all you have and they are welcome to them. If they ask about all the guns that you may have bought and registered, simply tell them they were stolen. You simply came home one night and they were all gone, and NO, you decided not to report the theft because you did not want anyone to know in your community that you owned that many guns. We havent stuffed it into our matress yet but a safe is looking really good right now!

Democrats have declared a war on capital and Obama is leading the charge.  I think people have just begun to understand what that means.

Napolitano and others

It really doesn't matter much who BHO appoints as secreatary of whatever. They all work for him at his pleasure. Given the Constitution, all he has to be sure about is 218 votes from San Fran Nan and a working majority from "The war is lost" Reid. I sincerely doubt there will be any successful filibusters in the Senate, so even though the market has gone to hell, invest in K/Y or Vaseline. They appear to be unusually positioned growth opportunities.

Is it possible that GWB paved the way for Euro-socialism here?

I know we have all been losing sleep over an impending "presidency" by an incompetent socialist boob, who, along with his new CoS, is praying the economy tanks further still, but did our current president just grease the rails for Obama?

Yeah, I know. Its Dick Morris. However, he does get it right a good deal of the time.

R D--

There is no question in my mind that GW has been pouring the foundation for the past 6 years or more of his administration preparing the USA for entry into a global state. As you may know, one of the reasons I spent less time here and more at two other sites was because of the intense love affair for Bush here.

I grant you that GW has done some good things and I have stood by him in the Iraq decision. The things he has not done well are leading to the end of the sovereignty of the USA.

(Amnesty, Open Borders, Globalization, among others.)

Dick Morris may not always be right, but he has a darn good track record.

Segue into SPP and NAU--at least for me , it's a segue. This site has had a large share of participants who have called SPP opponents and those who believe in the potential of an NAU--conspiros, idiots and a few other names. I have even been insulted and attacked by one member here. I was reminded of the intensity of his emotions as I watched the ignorant sheeple rush to vote for Obama and manifest their anger at those who disagreed. Perhaps, we are conspiros, but the steps keep leading in the direction that we were concerned about.

So as most humans who seek comfort in numbers, I have spent a lot of time at other sites. There is no question in my mind that I am out of tune here--I am a Lou Dobbs, Pat Buchanan admirer. I have met many people like myself at the other sites. We all believed it would not happen as people learned about it. Canada and Mexico have a large number of people opposed to a single union too. But Canada is socialistic already.

When all is said and done, if we are indeed a socialist country in alliance with Europe and the other countries on this continent--then I ask, "What's in a name?". NWO, NAU, SPP, GFY, what difference if the naming was different????

After that little diatribe--YES--- Bush has greased the rails for Obama.

misterbill...Let's not throw the baby out with the bath water...

I've been a member of NB for almost a year now, and while I agree with some of what you said about some of the sentiments voiced here, I think that it is safe to say that there are many, many others at NB that feel as you do.

NB is a forum for a huge number of varied opinions and viewpoints. Do I think that many here share much in the way that they see the world, politics, etc...? Sure. As you said...Humans tend to seek comfort in numbers. But, I've seen many instances where posters have expressed opinions that agree with your own, as well as some who don't.

That said, let me express a couple of opinions of my own. Do I think that President Bush has made mistakes during his tenure? Absolutely. Do I think that some of those mistakes may have contributed to the financial mess that we now find ourselves in? Yes, and he bears the responsibilty for those mistakes.

But, President Bush has also put measures in place since 9/11 that have kept this country safe for the last 7+ years. What happened on 9/11 changed forever the way I look at the world and reshuffled the deck, as far as I'm concerned, about what is most important for this country.

Is the economy important? You bet. But the state of the economy would take a backseat real quick if our cities were to end up as nuclear wastelands from a terrorist attack.

"...peace is the highest aspiration of the American People. We will negotiate for it, sacrifice for it, we will never surrender for it, now or ever." President Ronald Reagan~ January 20, 1981

Prairie Sky--

I did say that I stood with Bush on Iraq. I cannot condemn nor turn my back on him when I wholeheartedly thanked him for protecting us and feel we have not been attacked again because of his decisions.

That said, the issues are his other actions--I stand by what I said in the previous post. (Amnesty, Immigration Reform, Open Borders).

He has definitely put our nation in a position to become socialistic.

And , this may surprise you, I hold him little responsible for the financial mess we are in. It took a lot more than 7 years to screw things up this badly. I am familiar with those reponsible in the government who brought about the subprime loan crisis and it was not GW Bush.

misterbill...Fair enough...

I know that you credit Bush for keeping us safe after 9/11 and that you supported him on Iraq. I didn't say you didn't.

As far as the other issues that you raised (amnesty, immigration reform, open borders), I also share your concerns. I have disagreed strongly with President Bush's positions and actions (or lack thereof in certain cases), in these areas.

Concerning the financial mess, I agree that there are others who bear a larger share of the burden for that than Bush does. I do however feel that his lack of oversight and leadership in this area definitely contributed to it.

"...peace is the highest aspiration of the American People. We will negotiate for it, sacrifice for it, we will never surrender for it, now or ever." President Ronald Reagan~ January 20, 1981

misterbill, I realize that any criticism of GWB is heresy here..

...but I think its time something was pointed out.

We can all sit around wringing our hands blaming the MSM and the hideously weak campaign that was run by John McCain for the fact that we are on the verge of seeing a for-real socialist sworn in as the next president.

While both of those factors played a role in the coming disaster, I think its time to lay the bulk of the blame where it belongs: squarely at the feet of George W. Bush.

This man who, if he has any conservatism in him at all he is only half a notch (if that) to the right of Bill Clinton, has been a flaming disaster for the GOP, and I believe ultimately, for this nation.

While many see our successes in Ashcanistan and Iraq and his tax-cuts as being high points for his presidency, he has done little else.

Personally, I gave up on the man when he attempted to ram the scamnesty bill down our throats. Even Bill Clinton didn't try to do that.

I know many feel that he is a good man and that he means well, and that may very well be true. However, that does not excuse his numerous transgressions, particularly in the area of damaging our national sovereignty. I now believe the man to be a globalist, pure and simple.

It didn't have to be this way.

-Dave

Did this country just elect Obama/Biden, or was it Soros/Ayers?

Throw in McCain

I gave up on the man when he attempted to ram the scamnesty bill down our throats.

And still they didnt get any Hispanic votes?

I have long felt that GW loves this country and means well by it. I also feel he has a vision and fails to see that the vision contradicts what  is best for the USA. Call me a Chauvinist or any name anyone would like. I put America first. I also am pragmatic and I put most things in a reality time frame. This puts me at odds with a few people but, I don't think a lot of people. An example--I am not a free trade  advocate, but a fair trade advocate. I do believe in a free market, but I strongly believe it needs tinkering from time to time. Why??? To keep it honest. Do all the free market people out there believe that all businessmen will work in the free market to the best results for any country or the best results for themselves???  How many of them feel that what is best for them is best for you and me?? Look at H1B and the reasons quoted by businessmen why they need it. Lack of trained Americans. Yet last year, more IT candidates graduated than there were open positions and the business leaders allege that they need to bring in more foreign  employees. Does anyone honestly believe it is not the wage scale and greater profits??? Come on!!!!

And what does free market have to do with hiring illegals. Do you, (I know you live in the Atlanta are), believe that the developers passed on the labor savings to those who bought their houses??

I don't know why I am asking you. I know what you think already. I am just venting. I also know that you, like I, include patriotism in your decisions. Is it enough to make a profitable business decision if 10,000 people lose their jobs. Why don't we move the big three to China where employees are  paid 36 cents an hour. That will certainly overpower any shipping and material costs.

OK, so I am a fool. I do not believe that every decision  should be a bottom line decision. I spent 31 years with a company that often reminded me and itself that one of our responsibilities was to be good corporate citizens. No more!!!

I do believe that GW is first and foremost, a globalist. I do believe that he believes that in the long run it is good for the world. I also believe that if he thinks that globalism will level the economic playng field and bring peace and prosperity to the workd, he is naive.

There is a neverending supply of people born who want what other people have, no matter that they already have better. We will never have a shortage of people who do not feel that their way is the best way and we should all live that way. How about, my religion is the right one and better than yours???

I have gone on long enough. One cannot walk out of an economics class and make the world better, as a rule. Changing times call for changing methods, but man's greed and envy are constant.

I want to take care of America first, not American businessmen. not American workers alone, but America. And if some of us have to make a little sacrifice to make it, (like giving up the third Lexus or nit making $50,000 to mount tires for GM), so be it.

PS I am one of those fools who tries to find American made good while I do my Christmas shopping. It is difficult. Eventually all things will be very cheap, but no one will have a paycheck to buy anything.

"misterbill, I realize

"misterbill, I realize that any criticism of GWB is heresy here.."

Don't read very many posts here, do you? Folks here have no problem with legitimate criticism, of which there is plenty to make. It's when people go off the deep end with their criticism that we have a problem with.

"Personally, I gave up on the man when he attempted to ram the scamnesty
bill down our throats. Even Bill Clinton didn't try to do that."

Bill Clinton didn't try to do anything, so that's not saying much. But guess who did push amnesty through? Ronald Reagan. Don't get me wrong, I'm not for amnesty at all, just trying to keep things in perspective. Speaking of amnesty, there are plenty of people here who criticized him for it, including me. So much for the heresy part.

Does anybody here--- remember Jmmy Durante???

What was he renowned for?? What nicknames did he have??

I mean, who could ever forgat that?

Did this country just elect Obama/Biden, or was it Soros/Ayers?

Okay folks--I am up on my soapbox---

Yesterday as I scoped out this site I noticed that the subject of Michelle Obama's caboose merited a complete column. In my scan, it appeared trhe NBers considered her derriere as something that should not be discussed. The first thing I ever noticed about her was her derriere. I asked my wife if she had noticed her derriere. She replied that "How could you not notice?"

So, among many things that rub me the wrong way these days (particularly since November 5), can anyone tell me why she is off limits??? Is it because the MSM has not charged her with spending $150,000 on clothes?? Is Jimmy Durante fair game about his nose because he was a white male??

Help me out here.. In the maentime, I will always envision Michelle as someone who is trying to smuggle two pigs out of the barnyard.

So--don't like me--call me crude --I really don't care as much as I used to. (Again, since November 5).

In today's PC environment would the Schnoz have to wear a veil?

Would I be a racist or a xenophobe?? How about a rhinophobe??

Mr. Bill... Now you have

Mr. Bill...

Now you have me wondering... did Jimmy Durante also have a big butt?

Auto Execs Flying Private Jet

So the media is going bonkers over the fact a bunch of auto industry execs took private aircraft on their begging expedition to Washington.  "Imagine the arrogance" they intoned.  Has anyone in the media calculated the cost of commercial airfare + time spent away from their offices, or taken into account that these highly compensated people might have had meetings on the plane (something they couldn't do on commercial)?

Didn't Mrs. Bill Clinton just make a secret trip to Chicago to meet with the Chosen One for discussions on the Secretary of State gig?  Could someone please show me her ticket stub from United or US Air or American or AirTran or whatever?

Given the current performance, I think they more time the execs spend busily looting, AHEM I mean managing the auto companies, the worse off the big 3 are.  The execs don't deserve this level of compensation, and their time is not so valuable that the planes cannot be sold.

Democrat Congress being elected or just coincidence--------

Could there possibly be any connection with a democrat congress and a miserably failing economy? For the last two years or so things have been slowly declining, of course they have also sped up recently, anyone else have investments? Obama is not of the proper mindset to deal with a failing economy, he's liberal, he doesn't think of solutions but just changing things, almost a contrary way of thinking. There needs to be an "economic rule book" or "economic constitution" that should not be strayed from. America has an economic history and we have tried a lot of failed policies. Why not learn from our past failures and not stagger down those insane roads. The next 4yrs should be another check off in the rule book of what not to do.

guns

I don't think there will be a door to door collection. It will be done in much the same fashion that the UK, Canada and the Australia have disarmed their public. Underhanded and slick. The attack on cigarettes is just a testing ground to see how to ban something without actually banning it. Congress will tax us to the point where we can not afford it. Permits, fees, ect.

Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

I don't see gun confiscation

I don't see gun confiscation as an issue ... good luck with that; even police and the military would fight with us on that one. I wouldn't put it past the confederacy of dunces on the hill to go after ammunition.

Already went through this in Maryland

Will expect to do so again. Lefty assembly members in Baltimore put in a bill to have all ammo (except shotgun ammo) micro serialised (unfortunately now possible) and to pay for the paperwork they wanted to tax each round five cents. All ammuntion that was un-serialised was to be turned in and no ammuntion could be used that was not micro-serialised. Ammunition and firearm companies testified that to do so would add approximately 50 dollars a box for ammo and they weren't going to retool anyway because of costs and so Maryland would get no ammo. I think Arizona (of all places) was going through the same legislation. Luckily (this time) it never got out of committee. These backdoor efforts always involve taxation, fees, and other stumbling blocks ad infinitum until the Left gets it's way.
