For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: will Obama's ties to ACORN impact this election?
In the past week, media have actually reported -- albeit nowhere near as frequently or in as much detail as they should -- some of the deplorable voter registration tactics of ACORN. Will the press continue doing so, and will this have any impact on the upcoming election? Or does the public not care about such irregularities because they see any voter registration as good and any attempt to regulate even illegal registration as an attempt to silence voters?
On the other hand, is it now just about the economy and the financial crisis, and everything else is irrelevant INCLUDING illegal voter registration?

I hope so.
October 11, 2008 - 09:56 ET by mizflame98I hope it impacts his campaign, but I doubt it. The polls doesn't seem to reflect that this ACORN scandal is slowing down his race for the White House. Although, I do suspect that the MSM fiddles with their polling data to make it look as if Obama is on top.

October 11, 2008 - 09:57 ET by Indiana JoeWill it impact? Remains to be seen. Should it? Of course, just like Ayers and Wright, Rezko and the New Party. The voters should be informed about these things, and left to draw whatever conclusions they wish.
It won't be reported by the MSM, but it will get out there. The question mark is, what will the average voter think about it, if honestly informed?
That's the $64,000 question.

MSM defends communist Obama
October 11, 2008 - 10:03 ET by wdhorningObama and crowd are involved clearly in a "conspiracy" right out of a communist manual. The MSM will be a victim of its own devices one day, if Obama has his way (no more free press).
Obama is dispicable and sorid character as proven by his history of associations with dispicable and sorid characters, including ACORN, and has proposed policies, which if enacted would destroy the US economy totally (75% of CEOs agree), damage our national security (Obama was 100% wrong about the surge), and ruin our health care system, and even CNN agreed that McCain's health plan is superior.

October 11, 2008 - 10:57 ET by Indiana JoeSince the MSM is making a to-do over Todd Palin dealing with the trooper, and Sarah Palin merely dealt with Moneghan, not directly with the trooper, I'd say she avoided the "ethical issue" you mention.
And any Cabinet member serves at the discretion of the executive. Any "investigation" into the hiring/firing of those members is on pretty shaky ground from the start.
The U.S. attorney "scandal" with Bush is a case in point. When Clinton first took office, he replaced every U.S. attorney across the country, 78 or so of them. People wondered, but were told it was within his purview and prerogatives. Nothing to see here. The media and the Democrat Congress of the time explained that to us repeatedly. But when Bush replaced eight of them, it was big news and a "scandal" that had to be investigated by a Congressional committee, no less. Democrats demanded it, and the media pushed for it.
This whole "troopergate" (should have copyrighted that with the capital "T" back in the '90s) thing is basically pointless mud-slinging. Just like the recent "discovery" of the Keating 5 scandal.
There's no "there" there. Unlike the questions about Ayers, Wright, Rezko, ACORN, Obama's tax-plan and voting-record, etc.

October 11, 2008 - 11:21 ET by retroconTodd Palin had a personal interest in getting the trooper fired, he was also a citizen, not a government enployee. He was free to do whatever he wanted.
If this were BHO and MO, the MSM would be declaring how much integrity BHO had for resisting the temptation to step in on his wifes behalf. As it is, the MSM will try to crucify Sarah.
Worse, Rezko gets convicted, and the articles are all "no one testified that the presidential candidate [BHO] did anything wrong." In otherwords, they're giving BHO a pass on Rezko, but putting it to Sarah Palin.
If BHO wins, it will be a true travisty for this country... media propoganda will have given this country over to the first socialist president in US history.

Can you imagine just *ONE*
October 11, 2008 - 10:30 ET by winston smithCan you imagine just *ONE* simple incident of voter fraud on behalf of McCain? You just know the media would be all over it like white on rice and would ride it right thru election day. But all of ACORN's illegal activities are committed on behalf of Obama so the media studiously ignore it. In Ohio in 2004 ACORN employees were indicited by a federal grand jury for creating bogus voter registration forms to help Kerry but you didn't hear anything about that in the media. The media would focus on the never-substantiated, completely fabricated Bush - Diebold voting machine connection instead. McCain needs to inform the electorate *DAILY* of these illegal misdeeds being done on behalf of the Obama campaign. If the media refuses to make this a legitimate issue THEN McCAIN MUST!!
It's getting ugly here in Ohio!
October 11, 2008 - 10:29 ET by goldenthroatNow an appeals court has sided with our left-wing secretary of state, demoncrat Jennifer Brunner, in her stand on the ACORN issue - which is basically "if you ignore it long enough, maybe it will go away!"
http://www.cantonrep.com/index.php?Category=13&ID=435677&r=2&subCategoryID=
This is incredible! ACORN is under investigation now in nine states and the media has been playing audio sound bites and publishing articles about people who have admitted to being bribed into not only registering to vote - with everything from cigarettes to cash - multiple times - but to vote for Osama Bama. Here is a link to Cleveland radio station WTAM-AM 1100 on the Bob Frantz morning show when Frantz attempted to interview Jeff Ortega from the SOS office. Scroll down to the pic of SOS Jennifer Brunner and listen to the "explanation" he gets:
http://www.wtam.com/pages/bfrantz.html
Ortega sounded like Obama with his "uh...eh...yea...well..." as he attempted to sidestep what Frantz was asking him and ended the conversation by saying "gotta go...bye."
Obama is out to steal this election by any means he can and is using ACORN and their demoncratic cronies to stuff the ballot box! This calls for nothing short of a federal investigation!
But will it happen? And will it be too late?

Exactly.
October 11, 2008 - 10:41 ET by winston smithBush should have AG Mukasey out before the cameras insuring a full federal investigation of these ACORN scoundrels who are making a complete mockery of the election process. Time for the Republicans and Bush to GET SERIOUS on this issue already! You know what Clinton would have done with something like this on just the mere appearance of fraud during a tight election race. Reno would being making twice-daily television apppearances with Carville and Begala making the rounds calling Republicans tyrants and usurpers.
Disgusting!
October 11, 2008 - 11:16 ET by Indiana JoeSo-ooo blatant. The partisan hack of an SS claims there's no need to verify voter info? It will take "two or three days" to write a computer program to do it? So what? There's weeks left before it's needed!
Poster above is absolutely right, the feds need to look into this. It's a federal election, it's an equal-protection issue, a disenfranchisement of legitimate voters, and govenmental malfeasance, for starters.
Here's an idea: any state that can't meet simple requirements to prove the veracity of their voting system should have their Electoral Votes disqualified. Otherwise, they pollute the process for the whole country. And it's the state's fault!

October 11, 2008 - 13:50 ET by winston smithIn addition, when you figure in all of the sweetheart treatment that Obama is getting in the media, academia, hollywood, television, the nightly insults of McCain/Palin courtesy of late-nite TV, the unpopularity of Bush, the lingering anger at the GOP, the alleged "unpopular war" and it's aftermath in Iraq which has been improving daily --- and ignored by the media, this latest economic meltdown and the fact that many of the polls are OVERSAMPLING DEMOCRAT RESPONDENTS-- the fact that Obama's up by only 3 or 5 in the polls doesn't say much for Obama. 10 points can be made up overnight, so I think those liberals (and some Republicans) who are way-too- soon hanging their hats on an Obama victory, still could be in for a little shock 3 weeks from now. Obama should be clearly be ahead now by more than 15 or 20 points for this election to have any hope of being a "landslide". The current numbers don't bear that out and still have the possibility of turning in favor of McCain.
If you google this date or any October date for 2004 or google the incomplete phrase "Kerry up by..." (with the quotes) you will notice some interesting result links that have predictions of a Kerry victory for 2004. And we know what the actual outcome was. This election and the news coverage of it appears to have many of the same characteristics as the '04 election. Even Rasmussen had Kerry up right until the very last day of the election and then on election day Bush was suddenly up by 3. So I'm not ready to give up on this election just yet. 3 weeks is an eternity in politics. It's the media that's trying to suggest that the election is all over and hope Republican voters will stay home. Don't take the bait. STand your ground!

The list of issues is right on and it doesn't seem to matter to most folks. (Except on sites like NB).
I'll probably have the FBI at my door for this but---- I used to wonder what was wrong with some groups of people in America that they would resort to violence to resolve their issues. Possibly it is because ---"it just doesn't matter"-- to most people , being ignored is the most angering and frustrating thing that can happen.
Here we have large group of law-abiding respectable citizens who see all these unethical, and even criminal actions taking place every day and a spineless government that does nothing about it. To make it worse, the principal offenders are those who want to take the reins and "change" America.
Without spending a lot of time on it, perhaps it is time for the citizenry to take "it just doesn't matters" into their own hands.
So, now, I understand why some of those groups who resorted to violence in the past, did so. They saw things going wrong, by their standards, and saw nothing being done.
In order to not get visitors or phone calls, I add, "I understand why" does not imply "I agree".

Can't we just take him at his word? You know that the news media is dominated by conservative people and lean heavily to the right! Obama's statements are routinely taken out of context! President Obama suffers the same problem as the current and late Mayor Daleys of Chicago. Listen to what he means, not what he says!
Not that I've made you all angry, I just wanted to try looking at this from the rose colored perspective of a leftist journalist! The problem is that I can handle the truth and thus I automatically disqualify myself from membership in the leftist legion.
Indeed, I do see Comrade Obama as a bona fide Communist. However, most of the modern Democrat [Commiecrat] party is not to far behind. If you check the principles they espouse and compare iot to the basic tenets of the Communist Party, you will see there is little or no difference! I really have a hard time trying to see how there can be a conservative Commiecrat anymore. Maybe they are rather idealistic until they get infected with Washingtonitus! Of course, we've had people in this great country who sold out to the commies for money and there is money to be made in politics, especially liberal politics!

Anger at McCain Rallies
October 11, 2008 - 10:36 ET by Travis NoodleI am concerned about the comments from Senator McCain at various rallies this week.
When the woman took the mic and said Obama was an Arab. I think she meant to say Muslim. McCain took the mic from her and said Obama was a good guy and he admired his accomplishments. He seemed so condescending to her. I started to think that McCain is out of touch.
Other people expressed anger at McCain for not standing up and fighting Obama. Obama is a dirty, dirty bird and the Republicans need to throw it in his face.
There is a way to run a campaign in an honorable way and then there's bending over and taking it up the you know what.

A danger for the big "O" man
October 11, 2008 - 11:07 ET by Vivaldi5I don't think the press will be able to avoid continuing to chronicle the antics of ACORN--and even if they did, the story is now out there, and it's glaringly obvious those registration people were not signing up Jive Turkey and Mary Poppins to vote McCain/Palin.
I think that if Obama wins, the perception that he "stole" the election will be very hard to shake and throws his whole ability to govern into question--at least in the way that his campaign ("hope/change") has supposedly been about. True, he does have Pelosi/Reid and a significant to overwhelming Democrat majority in Congress, and overreaching is not, I think, out of the question, but in view of the fact that the voters get to speak again in 2010 (and might do another 1994 style Congressional turnabout against the incumbent party), that would I think be self-defeatingly stupid.
If I may plagiarize myself (http://vivaldi5.blog...), I think Obama could in raw political terms get out in front of this thing, look "presidential," and make Chris Matthews' leg tingle anew by making a very clear statement against it--something like this:
Heck, if Obama were to say that, given this economy and McCain's saying yesterday that he was "decent" (Obama's campaign commercial for next week?), the big "O" could probably win this thing without ACORN's dubious help.

I'm not speaking here of anything but the political ramifications of Obama making such a statement; I think we on this forum are essentially agreed that his intent toward ACORN is pretty well summarized by your formulation of "nudge-nudge, wink-wink."
Berg vs Obama
October 11, 2008 - 11:09 ET by tunes59I think the biggest story so far, which is being ignored by the MSM is that Obama is fighting the court in producing documents that can prove he is qualified to be POTUS per the Constitution. It is being brought to the attention of many, without help from the media who do not speak of it, that Senator Obama has a lawsuit filed against him in PA. It is a lawsuit questioning his eligibility to be President. Whether true or not, this needs to be settled before election.
The lawyer who filed the suit said he would dismiss it, if Obama will just present the required records, one which is the vault copy of his birth certificate, which is not the same as the one floating on the internet.
Below is a petition someone started to get Congress to settle the Berg lawsuit by having Senator Obama present the records requested. The real story is why Obama is fighting the case and not just producing the documents.
Here is the link to the petition;
http://www.rallycongress.com/constitutional-qualification/1244/stop-obama-constitutional-crisis
So far Mr. Obama has refused to produce the documents and is trying to fight the court order to produce the documents.
Any American should be able to prove citizenship in less than a day. Why can’t Mr. Obama?
Here is a link to the actual court documents - http://news.justia.com/cases/featured/Pennsylvania/paedce/2:2008cv04083/281573/
A constitutional crisis will rip our country apart. If this is not cleared up now we will have a crisis. If you care at all about America you must call for Mr. Obama to produce the documents and prove that he is eligible to be President.

October 11, 2008 - 11:50 ET by dark_dsShould but probbaly wont. It will be reported but not to level it should be but then it will be followed by stories of how racism is tainting the election and how the economy is all Bush's fault, then folks will be left saying " I dont want to be a racist" and we cant have 4 more years of Bush". I dont think if a video of Obama, Bill Ayers, Tony Rezko, Reverend Wright, and Louis Farrakahn playing beach volleyball at an ACORN retreat with the Obama Youth Choir singing in the back ground praises of The One would surface it wouldnt matter

Will someone PLEASE get rid
October 11, 2008 - 12:19 ET by air conservativeWill someone PLEASE get rid of the prepubescent girls modeling Conservative T-shirts on this website! As a mom of a young girl, I find them repulsive, and they seem to get younger every week. Just doesn't seem to belong here... let the daily Kos put jailbait on their front page.
Newsbuster Ads
October 11, 2008 - 13:08 ET by Lame CherryRespectfully to women, the models are not prepubescent which means children, they are in their 20's.
For the facts, if you do not like the ads you are welcome to contact Newsbusters and write them out a check paying for that ad space. Newsbusters is not free. It costs money to run this site and that is the reason the ads are on this site to generate revenue so people can come here and play.
I for one am very pleased to see young ladies so inclined to wear firearms on their shirts championing American issues instead of fainting at Obama rallies stoned on dope.
Of course, I'm not a spokesman for Newsbusters and they are big enough boys and girls to defend themselves on revenue issues, but if you don't like it then pay for the ad space yourself or if you are not so inclined, set your monitor screen to a higher rate and then the models are off your screen of view.
It takes a great deal of effort, revenue and research to bring about Newsbusters and I'm very pleased Thoseshirts.com is a sponsor of this site.
I would suggest people buy a dozen shirts and send them to all their Christmas relatives, take pictures and I believe the site will post those photos on the main page.
If one is a 40 something woman not liking the ads then that would solve the issue of the women in the ads.
Let us though celebrate women of all ages and not pick at things which are bringing all of us a forum to speak to the world, free for us but costing Newsbusters money.
God bless.

I don't need a lesson on
October 11, 2008 - 13:33 ET by air conservativeI don't need a lesson on advertising. I know it takes money to run a website. I am sure that, given the traffic this website sends to that T-shirt company, they would provide a more suitable add if NB asked them to.
Obviously, these girls are models, not just some "girl off the street". I don't doubt that they're all legal age, but I'm sick of marketers putting forth these images of "under age"-looking, curveless women. You can't honestly think that the redhead on the right "looks" over 16. It's happening all over in the MSM. It has been for years, and I wouldn't expect you - if you're not a woman - to understand the effect these images have on women of all ages. I don't expect that this site gets a lot of impressionable women that we need to worry about, but this site can take a part in affecting change in the mainstream advertising industry the same way it does with the mainstream media. By rejecting these ads, it sends a message to the advertiser. The next time they think about hiring models, they may consider hiring women that look like women rather than look like young teenage girls.

October 11, 2008 - 15:12 ET by cocodrieI agree with you. These ads intentionally present these girls as underage and lower the morals of society. The teeny-bopper market is huge and these young appearing boys and girls are used to sell a lot of immoral stuff to children.
Thanks, coco...Apparently...

ac, I agree!!
October 11, 2008 - 14:41 ET by PrairieSkyI too am the mother of a daughter, and I completely agree with your observation concerning the appearance of the models lately in some of the advertisements in question. I am sure that these "girls" are probably not teenagers (I hope), but they appear to be, and whether that is by design or by accident, it is a bad idea and whoever is making these adds needs to rethink the "look" of the people that they are using for them.
The girl that I am looking at right now (red hair, freckles and brown eyes) looks like she's about 14. Now, she may be 22, but as I said, that is not how she appears. Like you, I think the next time that they hire models, they should ensure that they hire models that are and that look like women...not pubescent teenagers.

Hmm, maybe the left and the right aren't so far apart after all.

October 11, 2008 - 18:15 ET by PrairieSkyWhich, by the way, I don't. This is about hiring models that appear underage to be modeling this merchandise. And, it has nothing to do with "discrimination" either. That's ridiculous.
It is my opinion, and apparently several others here at NB, that the models being used in these ads have the appearance of being too young as to be appropriate for advertising this merchandise. If you don't agree with that, fine. But don't get personal and accuse me, just because I happen to disagree with you, of having "issues".
I could accuse you of the same thing, but you'll notice, I haven't.

October 11, 2008 - 17:02 ET by ckc1227"You can't honestly think that the redhead on the right "looks" over 16."
What if she isn't? It's a picture of a girl wearing a tshirt. There's nothing sexual, or inappropriate about it. If that image has any negative effects on any woman, I suspect deeper issues are the cause, not the image itself.

Nevertheless...tough it out..if this is all we had to worry about in life...I'd be happy.
I can remeber when there was zilch for advertizing here...I used to be able to contribute here, because of personal matters it has become all but impossible unfortunately, if I had the extra I would in a second put it in...if more of you that are complaining pony up where it says donations or whatever above in a big way (or it used to anyway)...why we wouldn't have anything to bitch about...now would we.
Oh well...that's my rant about this.
