Why did Brokaw try to act
October 8, 2008 - 05:16 ET by ThisnThatWhy did Brokaw try to act like he was in charge; then capitulate to Obama for a "followup"? I thought Jim Lehere did a much, much better job at getting the candidates to address each other.
I also think Brokaw should have been out of the business of selecting the questions. Instead, all the questions should have been pre-approved (to keep the loonies out), but Brokaw should not have been aware of who had what question. Instead, the participants should have been randomly selected. And we certainly didn't need any Internet questions -- there were enough real people there to supply questions.
You know, kinda like a real town hall meeting???

Town Hall
October 8, 2008 - 08:47 ET by GothampcWhat happened here is that Obama was trying to change the rules. The meeting was designed to be a Town Hall, not a debate. When Obama asked to refute what McCain said, he should have been told "You've agreed to a Town Hall, not a debate".
A missile in Manhatten?
October 8, 2008 - 05:39 ET by ThisnThatSince this is open thread, this story is very interesting. Some guy drove a missile through the Queens tunnel to downtown Manhatten. It wasn't a real missile -- instead it was decorated with advertising. But the point is -- could a terrorist decorate a real missile, bring it to Manhatten, and set it off?
This goes to show how a society's paradigm can be used against it. Someone could have repeated this by driving a fake missile back and forth until he was sure it wouldn't be stopped, then substitute the real one, and BANG!

October 8, 2008 - 05:46 ET by ThisnThatI am really wondering about this polling. Case in point -- I watched Frank Lutz's so-called "uncommitted audience" last night and noticed a number of black participants.
Uncommitted? With blacks voting for Obama at a 95% clip, how could any poll of "uncommitted black independents" be real? Are they kidding, or are these people gathered together just so the pollsters can check off a "diversity" box?

October 8, 2008 - 07:05 ET by IgnatzJFahrquarI do like Luntz's use of the dial polling but his past few focus groups have been questionable.
I noticed the exact same thing you did plus, at the end of his little report he asked something regarding McCain. From what I could see maybe a quarter raised their hands to which he replied, "There you have it, half the people". Huh?
His other focus group at the first debate he asked another "independent" a question about B Hussein and she rattled of some nice rehearsed Dim talking points.
I see on Drudge that Zogby dropped another point to a 2 lead for B Hussein. As diheartening as these polls are lately something just doesn't smell right.

AP Debate Expert: Debate Tied So Obama Won
October 8, 2008 - 06:47 ET by dodecahedronAP Network News just played on AFN Radio at the top of the hour. They had a 'debate expert' on to give analysis of the debate.

October 8, 2008 - 06:59 ET by sewcatty"He said the debate was a tie...so Obama won. " And, much of the media stated that the palin/biden debate was essentially a tie, so biden won that too. Rush pointed out that the lamestream media hasn't declared a republican a debate winner in years and years. I don't know if mccain WON last night, but BO didn't WIN either. I would truly call this debate a tie.
Imagine had Palin been there instead of McCain, she would have set that place on fire. As it was, this debate was boring and I didn't care for the questions asked either.
after listening
October 8, 2008 - 07:01 ET by MrDebaterto McCain last night(yawn)...I am finally convinced that we should enjoy our America now, for this may be the last time we have with her. Obama will definitely make this country look more like China if he wins(remember how he bragged about their infrastructure?). McCain will make this country look like France. Who would have thought that the country of Georgia would end up being the most "American" type country in the world? I'm done. I'm buying 2 years worth of canned goods and cutting a ton of firewood. It doesn't matter who wins this election, the gov't will have grown to an unsustainable level, and will own more bad assets than at any time in history. The only good thing will be that the illegals will go home when the country fails. If we could only get the fence up after they leave.

October 8, 2008 - 07:15 ET by dmntd1Drudge is reporting AIG threw a HUGE bailout-celebration, to the tune of $440,000. Is it any wonder that Opensecrets.org shows more AIG donations to Sen Obama, than to Sen McCain?
** Full disclosure, I didn't add up the money, merely a cursory glance through the 2008 period. Sen McCain had a single page of donors listed, while Sen Obama had 4 pages...

October 8, 2008 - 07:44 ET by billbDid anyone else notice that McCain left the debate scene after about 5 minutes of socializing? Obama and his wife were still on the c-span camera more than 1/2 hour later still mixing with the crowd. In my mind McCain was noticebly absent
BRIT HUME
October 8, 2008 - 07:49 ET by MrltavernHey everyone,
Did anyone catch Brit Hume's claims that McCain lost? I really didn't think that McCain lost. I think Brit made that comment b/c he's upset that he's not dead yet.
Seriously, how could anyone say that he lost. I thought scored some major points on the economy. After all, Obama claims that he doesnt know the economy.
I have another question.
Why do Democrats feel they're superior handling the economy?

DEBATE #2: BETTER BUT
October 8, 2008 - 08:16 ET by reelman46DEBATE #2: BETTER BUT
Let
me tell you, he could have hammered BHO into the ground…but (once
again) the usual fatal mistake of Repub “nice nice” constraints was
evident.
Last nite the biased lib moderator ignored any character questions, JM
did not name names. JM did not laugh-shake his head at liberal “tax
cuts”, JM did not educate voters on liberal history, JM did not hammer
BHO on his nothing resume, on the liberal “fairness” definition and a
few other things like his advisors being the same ole tax, spend and
social engineers a la Klinton…also there is the SC judges…do you prefer
a Gisberg type Barack?
JM could have asked BHO to join him in a “no taxes-fees on the people”
pledge. JM never hung the #1 liberal #3 liberal label on the socialist
team. He hit a double in Home Run Derby. He did once mention gov-ment
is not always his answer.
Maybe Palin can fill in some gaps but its all so iffy. Meanwhile, ACORN
(unmentioned) is registering prisoners, illegals, homeless and
illiterates as fast as possible. Thousands with illegal registration
forms in 9 states. Democrats do what they do. Not a word about that
either…democrats should be hammered about that as a Party.
Of course many democrats were ahead October 8th and lost sooooo.

Why do voters think dems are better at handling economy?
October 8, 2008 - 08:36 ET by ChrisMillsMr.L.,
That last question is pretty easy - dems think they're superior at everything. The reason for this is that they tend to hate facts and reasoning and love emotional arguments. If they'd open their eyes and see thier anti-growth ways, they would be republicans.
The operative question is why voters seem to think the dems are better at handling the economy. The economy didn't turn down until the dems took over Congress, which BTW has power of the purse. Why they feel the executive branch can be blamed when the executive branch can't pass legislation to deal with the economy is beyond me. It seems like it's time to go back to high school goverment classes and educate voters to show them that A) legislators are ill-equipped to head the executive branch and B) Congress is the gov't entity most to blame for any economic problems.

Should we make plans?
October 8, 2008 - 08:29 ET by dcullingSince this is the biggest group of conservatives that I know of or at least participate regularly with, I've been wondering if we ought to start thinking what we might be able to do just in case Obama wins. If the economy keeps crashing I'm sure a president Obama with a willing Marxist majority in the House and Senate will just make things worse.
For example, maybe it would be a good plan to start pushing for the idea to let states opt out of big government programs like Social Security, Welfare, Medicare ect. and their associated taxes so they are free to find solutions on their own. Of course they would be free to participate in and pay for their fair share for defense, the State Department, FBI, CIA or whatever they choose...or maybe they just must meet their obligations as spelled out in the original Constitution.
I'm thinking it might be possible to convince enough Liberal citizens and thus get it passed that this is a good idea for at least they would have the choice to move to any state that might be doing well in case theirs goes to hell.
Of course I'm not talking about states seceding from the Union because anyone that suggests that is automatically an extreme right wing nut job at least according to the media as we've seen lately when they reported on the Alaskan Independence Party.
I have no idea what it would take to accomplish such a change, but I believe if enough citizens want something the Congress has to listen...well at least until they pass a law blocking citizen initiatives.
Another idea may be to push for the repeal of the 17th amendment which made the Senate the highly politicized thing it is today. Originally the Senate was picked by the state legislators with fixed 6 year single terms with the intention of the Founding Fathers that it be composed of the "best" citizens of each state and isolated from the concerns of reelections. I don't think it would to be too hard to convince people we need smarter senators and more engineers, scientists, economists and such instead of so many lawyers.
Right now Congress has an all time low approval rating with most people thinking the other guys senators are idiots. So this idea may sell even to Liberals.
Of course the Liberal leadership will fight both of these ideas, but if these are promoted the right way they may just be appealing to the majority of citizens.
Consider all this just a seed for a brainstorming session. Modification of these and other ideas are most certainly welcome. I'm just looking for something constructive to think about in case Obama wins besides building an underground bunker on the family farm and stocking it with ammo and freeze dried food.
I was somewhat encourage that Liberals and Conservatives can agree on certain things when so many from both sides disagreed with the bailout. For the first time ever a certain Liberal I know actually agreed with me on something...I was shocked.
Thanks
Retirees
October 8, 2008 - 08:51 ET by billbI'm a 70 year old retiree. No Pension, but an IRA that I've funded to the max for all of my self-employed life. NOW the government requires me (by law) to SELL a part of my savings into a government- caused market collapse in order to satisfy the RMD requirements. Now that my savings have lost 30%, I must sell even more at a loss and pay taxes on the withdrawal! OR a 50% excise tax if I don't! Anyone over 70 should be entitled to TAX FREE IRA withdrawals or at least tax free exchanges to Roth IRA's. At this age, we have no make up time. Meanwhile the government is considering buying up bad loans from, in many cases, deadbeats. I provided for my own retirement utilizing the only game available to me. Now at this late date, the government is pulling the rug out from under us.
There you go.
October 8, 2008 - 10:40 ET by dcullingThere you go, that's what I'm talking about. Where do I go to sign the petition to get rid of the RMD requirements?
I have never felt more
October 8, 2008 - 08:37 ET by Captain RepusI have never felt more depressed in my life. On top of the economy tanking because of incompetent leaders in business and government, we have to make a choice between a charasmatic, smooth-talking smokers voiced socialist and possible marxist who will lead our nation to ruin and a semi-senile, worn out old man who can't complete a coherent sentence and had to write down every question asked (has McCain never heard of TIVO).
I could see this coming during the primaries. My moronic party decided again to put up a Bob Dole look-alike to guarantee failure.
It sure looks like a death spiral to me.
I get the feeling...
October 8, 2008 - 08:46 ET by dcullingI get the feeling that McCain is mostly interested in finishing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in an honorable way with the least casualties. Then I think he will step down and let Sarah take over. This makes sense to me considering what he's been through.
Getting Disgusted with McCain
October 8, 2008 - 10:00 ET by Tom in NCAfter sitting through 90 minutes of the debate that McCain said the "gloves will be coming off", I started to wonder if McCain has any real fight left in him to take on Obama.
I was really disappointed in his performance, everytime Obama left him opening,(and there were several), instead of going for the throat, he punted. His folksy responses grated on my nerves and his soft manner had me clenching my teeth wondering why he wasn't be more aggressive and telling the American people who is responsible for this whole economic mess and who is getting rich from it, DEMOCRATS! He did have a few moments of brilliance, but they were few and far between.
We need for him to call out Obama on his lies and misrepresentations like he does during his stump speeches and this town hall format was the perfect place to do it, but he chose not to confront him on his associations with Ayers, Wright, Flegler, or Rezko. The opportunities are there but during these debates he just flat refuses to take advantage of them and hammer Obama.
The person I feel sorry for the most is Sarah Palin, she is out there hammering away at Obama and she was fantastic in her debate with Biden, if there was a way for her to debate Obama, I'm sure she would clean his clock and turn this around quickly, sadly that won't be happening and I'm afraid a devoted socialist will be our next president, GOD HELP THIS COUNTRY!

October 8, 2008 - 10:23 ET by SeashellI'm you neighbor in SC and agree with everything you say here. McCain and Palin are going to be on Hannity tonight so maybe, with palin by his side, he will start to pound away on Obama. He should have done this last night because so many people don't have cable or the internet and will never get the truth. Only news from the bias big three: NBC, CBS, ABC.

Vote 'No' for Obama
October 8, 2008 - 12:10 ET by JasonPUse your McCain vote to vote against Obama. McCain is frustrating, but we still have conservatives in the House and Senate that can check any ridiculous proposals he may come up with. The very thought of a democrat pres with a democrat congress should motivate even the most complacent conservatives and moderates to get up, and vote against Obama.
And as you're from NC, please communicate to those around you that Senator Dole absolutely needs our support, as does McRory for Governor and Les Merritt for state auditor. If we are ever going to start to chip away at the democratic control and croneyism in this state, now is our opportunity.
The worst debate
October 8, 2008 - 10:21 ET by Pha PhaThat was the worst debate I have ever watched. The questions that Browkaw selected were awful. I would have rather seen the candidates select people randomly and have them ask their questions without being policed by NBC. I not sure if either candidate answered anybody's question. They just gave their stump speech over and over again. If I there and asked a question. I would ask this about healthcare: Would either of you support healthcare that was based on your current health. If you are overweight and smoke and drink alot, should you pay more foe healthcare than a person takes care of their body with proper nutrician and exercise. Wouldn't that encourgae more people to do the right thing and health care costs would drop. Kind of like auto insurance, If you drive with caution and don't get in accidents and get speeding tickets, your insurance stays low. But if you get in lots of fender benders or you have DUI's, you pay more, much more. Just a common sense thought.

Me too. You know there were questions about Ayers and company but Brokaw would never allow that. As I have said many times, these are issues the American people deserve to hear about. I was talking with someone the other day and they had never heard of Ayers.

Perhaps, in the future, it would be wise for not so many conservatives to run in the primaries, splitting the conservative vote - that's what happened this time. Although, I don't think there was one conservative in the primaries who had the wherewithal to overcome the built-in advantages for the Democrat this year - no matter who they ran.
