For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Meltdown.
Japanese stocks were down more than 9 percent Wednesday. China down 8 percent. World markets crumbling. Central banks FINALLY did a coordinated rate cut this morning, but markets are still selling off.
An economist on CNBC yesterday said that stocks are currently discounting a conventional recession that lasts about a year with unemployment going to 7 percent. However, the credit markets are predicting a more serious contraction lasting several years with unemployment going to 8 percent or higher.
Which market is right? How low do we go? How nervous are you getting? Are the panic and hysteria getting overblown, or is the fear justified, and things are skidding out of control?

October 8, 2008 - 09:26 ET by Clear thinkerI want to see people go to jail over this financial fiasco. And if it invloves a few billionares, and uber millionares all the better. We seaze their assets, ALL OF THEM, and divide the money out to 401k holders that lost their retirements. My suggestion is only partially retribution, my main focus is helping out those that invested in 401k's and will have no choice but to go to the government for their retirement needs. Where the hell do we get that money from, the taxpayer?
We had a meeting once where our head bean counter did a presentation to our employees about the great and wonderful idea of 401k's. We even had an outside rep comein and talk to everyone. When both of them skimmed over the risk involved, I stopped them and asked them rather forcefully, "Can you guarantee all participants that their money will be there when they retire?" (I already knew the answer). Both had to admit "No". I did this to make sure my people understood the reality of 401k's. My bean counter told me after the meeting that what I did was probably not the smartest thing to do. I threw him out of my office and a week later he was replaced.
Gambling in the stock market is one thing, but almost promising big money to retirees always bothered the hell out of me. Now I know why!

Hell, say you buy a used car from a guy. The next day, you get pulled over, and the cop has a dog. SOP, the dog sniffs around and "hits" on the car. Nothing is found in the search you have to submit to, but the indication of the dog is enough for you to lose the car. Because it turns out that the previous owner had spilled a bit of cocaine or something on the carpet. You didn't know he was a user. Didn't care. It never even came up. But you're out a car. And a lot of hassle, I'm sure.
That's less evidence than there is that these scumbags were picking the pockets of these companies (and now us), and that many in the government were helping, turning a blind eye at minimum, or worse, blocking reforms that would stop them (hey, Barney Frank, talking about you!). That's aiding and abetting.
So, why shouldn't we do it? Make them pay "reparations," confiscate the "proceeds of illegal activity," or "fine" them, or "wind-fall tax" them, whatever of the myriad means the law has created to take money from the "undeserving" that we can apply. Hell, they try to do it to us as much as they can.
And then throw their sorry a$$es in jail. Let them rot.

October 8, 2008 - 08:57 ET by mattm1929 did NOT start the depression. It was a big event that scared alot of people, but it was not much more than a major correction.
It was the socialist "remedies" put in by both Hoover and Roosevelt that sent us into a depression that was still going ten years later. (Must read)
I'm more nervous about the election than the stock market. If Odumbo gets in and implements his anti-capitalist agenda, we'll be in a depression in two years, and it might take WWV to get us out of it.

Gov't intervention not cause of GrtDprssn but made it worse
October 8, 2008 - 11:56 ET by Ten7sThe Great Depression and the current problems have similar causes, namely humongous credit bubbles. After the Great Depression, various mechanisms were instituted to keep it from reoccuring. But since the early 1990's, people have been circumventing the system mostly through complex schemes of securitization (i.e. credit derivatives) CDOs, CDSs, and other securities designed to obsfucate and shift risk. The policies of Hoover and FDR likely extended the depression, but they weren't the cause.

October 8, 2008 - 09:09 ET by TheCynicI was discussing with some buddies how we should march on Washington with signs that say things like, "MY JOB IS OK" and "I'M FINE, HOW ARE YOU?" and "WHO WANTS TO PLAY SCRABBLE?"
It's amazing how much of the economy is driven by perception. The Democrats wanted to win an election so they did everything they could to alter perception about the economy, and in doing so, actually impacted it, compounding a real problem to make it even worse. They wanted an economic recession to help convince the public to oust the Republicans but I wonder if they got more than they bargained for.
Seems like what we need is a counter-campaign to show people that we aren't all doomed and it's not the end of the world. It's not even another depression. I'm fine, how are you?

October 8, 2008 - 10:17 ET by Indiana JoeThanks for asking! ;^)
Seriously, you have a valid point. I don't doubt that the FM debacle is a big problem, but I wouldn't discount the idea that the constant "doom-beat" on the economy from the left helped us past the tipping-point. I've told a lot of people that "confidence" is a major part of the economy.
Hell, even POS Barney Frank, in fighting housing market controls in the past, has claimed that saying there was a problem was more of a problem than the problem.

October 8, 2008 - 10:27 ET by Indiana JoeI don't know what's going on. Everyone seems to be in major panic mode lately. Last night, it was the debate. Immediately afterwards, people were talking about leaving the country, stocking up for disaster, all of that. And the economy has been a particular grieve-fest for a couple weeks now.
I don't get it. Not a big financier, and I'm sure we could be in trouble, but I'm not feeling that I may as well put a gun to my head. No one jumping out windows quite yet, is there?
In answer to your question, I can move my funds, too. I'm mostly in mutuals and MM. So, I just leave it up to the managers, that's what they do. I'm about a dozen years from retirement, so I can ride out almost anything, I think. Those with IRAs that mandate withdrawals and taxes or something (not clear on that, but have heard some complaints) may be in a different boat.
To me, though, a lot of this sounds like the panic that all the talk of a "recession" by the left was meant to cause. Not saying there's nothing to it, but I think there's a lot of over-reaction going on.
I just don't believe "we're doomed." Not quite yet.

For the Left, "rights" mean something completely different....
October 8, 2008 - 10:25 ET by Prester John...than what those dead white guys who founded this country had in mind.
Rights according to the Left/Dems/Socialists:
Healthcare, housing, college education, which of course means "someone" i.e. the taxpayer, has to pay for them, which in turn only increases the power of the government.
For the dead white guys:
Speech, religion, press, personal liberty, which means of course someone i.e. the government, has to protect them, which in turn only increases the power of the individual.
A not insignificant difference in the way one looks at the world.

October 8, 2008 - 13:05 ET by Indiana JoeWhile I understand and agree with your sentiments, I have to question the strategy. Voting for Palin is infinitely more appealing to me also, but I'd rather vote for her when it might mean something.
I'd rather vote for her as a sitting VP in 2012, when all this "experience," blue-collar-bashing crap is over. Second choice (waa-aay back there) is to vote for her in 2012 as the "outsider" once again, against the failed policies of the Obama Administration.
And I'd love to "send a message" to the GOP about leaving us Conservatives out of their "big tent." But we've sent that message before, and still didn't get much when they had the chance. Also, people point to Perot in '92, but I think a similar disaffection on the Right helped Clinton too.
I guess I just feel that, if Palin is our best hope for the next "true" conservative Republican, we'd be better served to help her now, while the iron is hot, and maybe spare ourselves the pain of 4 (or 8!) years of Obama. When I cast my vote, it will be for Palin, even though her name isn't at the top.
It will officially count for McCain, but I'll know my own intentions, and it will express my opposition to Obama. Speaking personally, I'll settle for that; a poor-man's hat-trick. At least there's a plan for the future in that scenario, IMO.

October 8, 2008 - 09:52 ET by dscottYou are correct to sound the alarm over a NEW entitlement program the Dems have offered as their vote buying scheme. The problem is the Dems have been very successful in packing the country with illegals who can't pay the hospital bill leaving all of us collectively to pay those bills in higher insurance costs. 13 million low wage workers don't have the money to pay a hospital bill, so what's Obama's solution: Create a new government program with a bureaucracy to start a government sponsored health insurance company who has a direct line to the Treasury, i.e. the taxpayer's wallets. They created the issue to solve it. Kick out the illegals and the cost of medical care will drop. This is no different than with theft in retailing, you pay about 5% premium in the purchase price because of shoplifting. We the public are forced to subsidize the theft by others. Someone has to pay and a business can't stay in operation not making a profit, so guess who gets to pay? Those who supposedly can afford it.

October 8, 2008 - 09:46 ET by gregfaheyI don't get it. The issue of gun ownership and the 2nd Amendment has not been brought up in this campaign and I have to ask:
"WHY NOT?"
It's a winning issue for the Republicans. Ask Gore. Now, Obama's team must thrilled that McCain is asleep on this issue. Obama was for the DC gun ban. The SC turned it over. Obama has a plethora of soundbites about gun ownership and how he believes it's for "hunters" and "sportsman". Time to scare those people in TN, VA, MI and other (apparently) blue states by pointing out that Obama and a Democratic majority would do all they can to restore the "Clinton" style laws and then some!
Schumer's chesire cat grin would morph into The Joker's at the prospect of Obama in the WH. Bet your farm that they would all of a sudden bring up guns as soon as Obama gets the nod.
Wake up! My God, what is McCain waiting for? He has Palin to fire up this NRA crowd and he's fiddling. It's a winning issue that the Republicans are apparently willing to give the Dems a break on. I call it a gift all the way to the White House.

Face it, declaring something people want a "right" is a vote-getter for most. They've been trained to believe that government exists to help them exist. The idea that something that is "good" for them shouldn't be provided or protected by the government... well, just try to explain that concept to someone as an example of "dangerous" over-reaching. They'll look at you like you're the crazy one.
On the other hand, enough Americans have a clear knowledge (so far, at least) that taking away rights is not the government's role. They have a problem understanding that the Constitution limits the powers of government, but they do realize that it protects the rights of the people. In fact, I'd wager that most average people would be challenged to quote a single sentence of the Constitution that isn't in the Bill of Rights, so the idea that the whole thing is about "rights" is a common misconception, IMO.
So, while the creation of new rights should be cause for concern, no argument, the restriction of rights would get more attention, worry people more, and be more effective an argument when it comes to changing voters' minds, I think. Which makes the gun-rights argument more effective as a political tactic. And pretty damned important to get out there in it's own right to boot.

Then why the silence from
October 8, 2008 - 11:47 ET by gregfaheyThen why the silence from McCain's campaign? This has always been the straw that breaks the Liberal camel's back.
The Dems learned to never bring it up after Gore losing.
Yet, McCain seems intent on burying this issue. It makes no sense.

Time for McCain-Palin to pull out all the stops. Expose Obama-Biden for what they are. Factor in a Democratic majority for Obama and it's beyond scary. I will never forgive McCain if he doesn't bring up this MAJOR issue. He's got the hand. He's letting a pair of 3's beat his 4 Jacks!
Another thing (whilst I rant): What is it with these "undecided's"? You mean they don't know where these candidates stand on the issues? This ridiculous notion that "who won the debate" somehow makes a President is maddening to me. I mean, these undecided's are basing their vote on who "wins" a debate? Aaarrrggghh!
Oh, and ANOTHER thing:
3 debates. Lehrer, Ifill and Browkaw. Next up is Schiefer. Imagine if Hannity was chosen? Liberals have taken over because most of America is asleep. They don't educate themselves on the issues or candidates and choose the next president whilst sitting on ther couch ala American Idol. I'm afraid we're going to get what we deserve in this country for becoming like lazy Roman's in the 1st Century. We're going down. God is letting us choose our destiny and, like Rome, we will soon be in ruins.
OK, all done now.

The fall in stock value is
October 8, 2008 - 10:00 ET by dscottThe fall in stock value is only tangential to the actual economy. The cost of gasoline and oil is dropping, thus lowering costs to businesses and consumers. Until gasoline drops down to 2006 levels the economy will continue to slow. The panic and hysteria is overblown and being fanned by the MSM because they refuse to make the connection to the price of oil which was the tipping point that brought down the house of cards. The coming recession will be short as the market is correcting the price of gasoline by a major reduction in consumption. http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/oog/info/twip/twip_gasoline.html#demand (website will be updated sometime today with last weeks info.)

Oil only one piece of puzzle
October 8, 2008 - 12:19 ET by Ten7sOil is only one piece of the puzzle. The real cause is the bursting of a world-wide credit bubble. My guess is that this will take quite a while to fix. But your right about one thing, there will be panic that will only make things worse. And I would expect some hoarding this year, to the extent that people are able given huge personal debt and the falling value of assets (home equity, investments, etc.)
See post below for detailed
October 8, 2008 - 12:47 ET by dscottSee post below for detailed explanation. Bottom line is you can't pay your mortgage if you are laid off. Businesses are forced to lay off workers when costs rise sharply. Labor didn't rise sharply in 2006, but gasoline did.
People with low FICO scores, whom the CRA was targeting, are typically working in jobs highly sensitive to bottom line costs affected by the price of fuel. The FICO score doesn't simply indicate your payment history but your payment ability. Low FICO scores are not just about someone missing a payment or not paying bills, they indirectly reflect the stability of the job they hold. This is why people with low FICO scores should rent NOT own property. It was irresponsible for the CRA and by extension Democrats, who insisted on this, to set people up for the fall when they simply didn't have the economic means/flexibility to weather an economic downturn.

They just updated the page,
October 8, 2008 - 12:35 ET by dscottThey just updated the page, gasoline consumption nationally is down 5.5% from last year at this time. The rate of reduction is still very steep per the graph. Once you see the turn on the graph indicating an uptick in consumption at that point you will know the economic recovery has begun. If you look to the top of the page notice the average price of gasoline for the US, still 71 cents per gallon higher than last year at this time.
Look at this page: http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/hist/mg_rt_usw.htm Notice the fluctuation of price around $2.50/gallon in 2006, that is where I believe the wheels started falling off the wagon.
Now use this page from the BLS to see the employment picture of that time period. http://www.bls.gov/webapps/legacy/cpsatab1.htm
check the seasonally adjusted employment and unemployment, then click the retrieve data button. To make it easier to see, check the box at the top of the page where it says include graphs then click GO.
Notice when the # of employed leveled off? January 2007
Notice when the # of unemployed started rising? January 2007
So the burning question is for Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and their underling, Barack Obama, why didn't you keep the 2006 promise to lower the price of gasoline? You had in your power to do so by lifting the drilling ban when you saw the level of unemployment rising precisely when you took control of Congress in January 2007. You broke your promise just like you did every last one of the other promises during that campaign. Barack Obama approved of their strategy by voting for it. Hold him accountable.
If the McCain campaign is too dense to make the connection and hold Democrats accountable for their broken promises, he deserves to lose. There is a reason why Obama is running against George Bush's record, it's called Projection, Obama is accusing Bush to cover up the failures of the Democrat lead Congress with whom he walked in lock step. The economy was recovering fine for most of the 6 years from the 911 attacks and Dot com bust. Then came Nancy and Harry running Congress. How is that working out for us?

Acorn voter fraud
October 8, 2008 - 10:43 ET by VinncyGAs of this morning 10 keyswing states have seized voter registration of Acorn for fraud. I placed an article about Obama's tight ties to Acorn three times on Newsbusters and they were removed them within 30 minutes. If we can't educate ourselves about the background of this unqualified candidate because the mainstream media refuses to do their job how are we to get the message out?.
The article appeared on Newmax.com and they had no problem in forwarding the article to others. I felt the quickest way was to use one of the best outlets we have Newsbusters but evidently they are not interested.
Please educate yourself and see if you can archive the article and see just how detestable this guy is.
