Tom Brokaw hit a "home run" in moderating the October 7 presidential debate in Nashville, Tennessee, earning a "tip of the hat" from MRC President and NewsBusters Publisher Brent Bozell for presenting a balanced agenda of debate questions.
Appearing on the October 8 "Fox & Friends," Bozell noted that of the 18 questions asked at the Belmont University-hosted debate, former "NBC Nightly News" anchor Tom Brokaw allowed 14 neutral questions and two each of conservative-leaning and liberal-leaning questions.
Asked about MSNBC's Chris Matthews calling Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), "debonair," however, the MRC president proclaimed that the "Hardball" host was "an embarrassment as a journalist."
"If he [Matthews] were to put an Obama button on... I'd have more respect for him, really. I don't have any respect for somebody who is as shameless as he or that sidekick Keith Olbermann," Bozell added.

Matthews stopped being a journalist long ago to revert to his old career as a partisan political hack (albeit with a cable show). However, he's still an embarassment - even as a partisan political hack - and that's quite a feat.

October 8, 2008 - 12:14 ET by Jack BauerNo question on Abortion. Illegal Immigration. Defense Funding (or did I sleep through that one). ACORN. SCOTUS selection. Gun rights.
Of course, these are all peripheral issues of no interest to the voter.

October 8, 2008 - 12:17 ET by merlin61The questions picked were all the talking points
of each of their campaigns. There was nothing
new. You are right Jack, there needs to be more
questions as you listed. Its getting so that I could
probably repeat their speeches, line for line and
their answers line for line. Between their

very, very boring. Someone needs to come up

not care who gets elected because they say
nothing substantial that's going to help us or

October 8, 2008 - 12:25 ET by lotrThe majority of the questions were focused on social programs and "the economy" -- you know, things the Founders had in mind for the Executive Branch of government..................... yeah right.
I'll agree that the questions were, by and large, framed neutral, though. Just too much focus on "the economy," something naturally hurting the perceived "incumbent." When is McCain going to set the record straight that he is not Dick Cheney?

October 8, 2008 - 12:53 ET by bigtimerIn my opinion McCain had plenty of opportunities to bring up and intertwine any of the issues that Jack brought up into the conversation, it wouldn't of been that hard to do at all...
To blame this on Brokaw is absurd in my opinion.
McCain is McCain, he represented himself well...he showed exactly what he really is last night.
We all know Brokaw swings left...but the door was wide open plenty of times for McCain to inject any of the topics he wanted to in the so-called pathetic debate.
Btw...McCain does not want to talk about illegal immigration, but he sure does want to make sure the illegals that are in a home they can't afford, or never could in the first place ...keep it...via more of our tax dollars.
I am just past disgusted...this whole thing is sad.
...and if I hear My Friends one more time...

October 8, 2008 - 17:17 ET by cocodrieWe are all in agreement here, the minor details might differ but we are all in the same boat. As Jesus said to the desciples - lets get to the other side.

BT - I'm disgusted - but I disagree
October 8, 2008 - 13:54 ET by Dee Bunkthat McCain could have brought those things up. He didn't even have time to respond to Obama's lies as it was. The format was horrible. Brokaw didn't use the follow -up section to follow-up, he used it to ask new questions. McCain often had to let Obama's attacks just lay there unanswered.
The questions were completely uninteresting and even thought they didn't attack McCain -I found it very biased in favor of Obama. Any controversial topic, benefits McCain because he is truthful and Obama has to lie.
I don't believe for a second that there were not a significant number of questions about the Judicial nomination issues. They were intentionally cut out by Brokaw
Like you, I could barely bring myself here today because I'm so frustrated. I think we have an extremely hard battle ahead of us and I don't want to listen to any negativity directed at McCain even though I feel much of it. I probably won't be around here much from now on other than reading the articles. I'm too easily influenced by negativity and I'm going to go bury my head in the sand and hang out with McCain supporters in IN working to do something so I don't feel helpless. If Obama wins and I didn't do what I could to stop it, I'll feel much worse than if I do what I can and he wins anyway.
Hi Dee... Well, worry
October 8, 2008 - 14:04 ET by bigtimerHi Dee...
Well, worry not, you are certainly in the majority here...just because I am disgusted and say what I feel when it comes to McCain, which I can't help...shouldn't keep you away because of any negativity said...we all can't be alike in the way we think.
For me it has been watching him for years in the Senate...he isn't any different than what he showed last night...for me it is frustrating....so may opportunities lost.
"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh
BT - I don't think I'm in the majority here at all
October 8, 2008 - 15:38 ET by Dee BunkI don't think there is anyone here who feels like I do about this. I didn't mean to sound like you were the negativity. You have often made me feel better about McCain's chances.
We are in a lose lose situation because of the reckless disgusting irresponsible media. This would be a race against Hillary and Romney if it weren't for the media meddling.
If Obama wins then the media wins and they will continue to pick our Presidents and our SCOTUS and our Senators. The sky isn't going to fall immediately with Obama. It's his SCOTUS picks and entitlement programs that will live on in infamy and there will be nothing we can do about it.
If McCain tries to pass some big entitlement program like this stupid Mortgage bailout, the Dems will block it because they won't want him to get credit for it, just like they tried to block Bush's prescription drug program. Nothing will get through unless it's a Dem proposed bill. We have to work hard to get the Senate back or at a minimum keep it from becoming a filibuster proof Dem majority. If Obama get in everything will sail through including the unfairness doctrine.
There are many things I don't like about McCain, but I'm trying to push them out of my mind so that I can stay motivated to work for him. Sorry if I offended you, I didn't mean what I said as a criticism or threat, just an explanation. Many people here (not you at all) just make me too mad. Arguing is pointless because no one ever changes their mind on anything - I'd rather commiserate.
Dee...I agree...
October 8, 2008 - 14:33 ET by PrairieSkyI said last night that the debate set up wasn't formatted in such a way that would have been conducive for McCain to bring up Ayers and other related issues. I think that last night was largely a waste of time. I don't anything constructive was accomplished.
Like you, I can get bogged down by the avalanche of negativity that surrounds things sometimes. My husband and I have been volunteering at our local Republican headquarters in an effort to do what we can. I have also done some volunteer calling to voters around the country, through the online phone calling system that McCain has set up on the campaign website.
From the beginning of this campaign, I have believed that as imperfect as he may be, McCain is still preferable to Obama, and I am going to continue to say and do whatever I can to try to keep Obama from winning this election.
Hang in there!

October 8, 2008 - 16:01 ET by bigtimerDee and Sky...
good for both of you gals...I mean that.
Between The bail-out bill and the performance last night, I just am at my wits end...they kept Palin off the campaign trail for too long, she could of made continued progress with the polls if he had just stepped aside and kept his big mouth shut for the most part, other than national defense...let her do the rest...because he can't...
She is the reason people are/were excited, not him...he knows this, if he wants to win...he has better accept that...quit with the arrogance, let alone this reaching across the aisle...
The msm and Palin are the only reason I may still vote a straight ticket, I say may very tepidly...believe me I hate Obama and his agenda, I detest the msm..he just needs to quit sticking it to us out here...people cannot take it forever...he does need his base, I just do not think he really realizes the silly little fact...he acts as if we are a given...maybe for the most part because of Palin we will win, he needs to quit destroying the gains made by her.
Just my rant...I will be so glad when this is over...I too get weary, this has been going on forever it seems.

October 8, 2008 - 16:54 ET by PrairieSkyIf it weren't for Sarah, McCain would be in worse shape than he is now...I said earlier today in another post that she has worked her heart out for this ticket, and if McCain does lose, it certainly won't be do to anything she has or hasn't done. She is absolutely fandamtastic, and she's the best thing that has happened to this campaign.
I would love for her to be our next VP...I just hope she gets the chance.

October 8, 2008 - 17:21 ET by PrairieSkyI was thinking earlier today that if McCain doesn't win this election, at least one really GREAT thing has come out of all of this...The Republican Party and the country have discovered Sarah Palin.
And Hillary has got to be scared @#$*less about her!! When 2012 rolls around she'll have some deep serious competition from Sarah. Up till now, 'ole Hill assumed that she had the presidential "estrogen zone" all to her herself...Well, not anymore, and I love it.

October 8, 2008 - 16:42 ET by PrairieSkyI live in North Dakota which, aside for a brief period of time during the summer when it appeared that Obama may have a shot here, is considered safe again for McCain. He moved his paid staff out of the state a couple of weeks ago. Despite the fact that this state isn't a battleground state, we are still active for the Repubs, mainly for McCain and as you said, the popular vote, and also to keep our Governor and state legislature Republican. Unfortunately, our congressman and both senators are all Dems, but we are hard at work at changing that.
While I am glad that our state is still red, I'd love to live in a battleground state, and really have a chance to get out there and knock on doors. That's why I have done some calling for McCain as a result of the online phone bank system that he has set up. Anyway, as you said, anything helps.

October 8, 2008 - 13:56 ET by Rush FanEither you listened to Rush Limbaugh or you and Rush think alike. Rush Limbaugh mentioned those same topics this morning and noted that left-wing Brokaw made certain those topics were not selected for the debate.
I usually agree with Brent Bozell, but I believe he is wrong regarding Tom Brokaw's home run. The fact that Brokaw insured that the topics that Jack Bauer and Rush Limbaugh mentioned were not brought up reinforces Brokaw's liberal agenda. Those topics are important to many voters and could make the difference in who is elected.

If that ridiculous question is typical of what the questions were, then maybe it was a balanced debate, but it was also idiotic and pointless.
Journalist/Commentator
October 8, 2008 - 12:21 ET by cvgbuckeyeA transition from Journalist to Commentator still does not abide being a caustic and unapologetic liar, of which Matthews and Olbermann are both. You can lock out a theif but a liar just walks right in. Matthews and Olbermann are both liars. They are also, both soemthing else, we all know waht it is and they carry a very cheap price.
I must add that they understand lieing very well because it is their native language, similar to "Satan who is the father of all lies and liars because it is his native language" and he is also the father of these two liars and they know it; as does anyone else with any brains.
Brokaw , List these 3 in priority
October 8, 2008 - 12:16 ET by BluegillThe question was to list the three things in order of priority, McCain actually had a good answer saying he would do all three, but Brokaw had to get in a last dig and say something to the effect "questionable that you could do all three at once" McCain came back in the next question and counter Brokaw's claim which I thought was funny because not only does Mccain have to debate BHO he also has to debate Brokaw.
One other point Brokaw seemed to use the discussion portion to ask his follow up questions and seemed to forget about the audience questions for a while and do his own thing.

Bush certainly got this question in 2000 repeatedly. I haven't heard it ask of Obama once!
Overall, I agree with Mr. Bozell but...
October 8, 2008 - 12:48 ET by PrairieSkyI would have liked to see some questions asked in some additional areas. My biggest problem with Brokaw last night was his annoying preoccupation with Obama's and McCain's response time. He became absolutely anal-retentive about the time thing!!!
I understand that both sides agreed to some time constraints, but let the candidates TALK!! Geez!

True...
October 8, 2008 - 12:55 ET by PrairieSkyI saw that too. Brokaw shouldn't have let Obama get away with that, but he didn't make a habit out of it. McCain spoke up for equal time and treatment, and overall, I thought Brokaw was more even-handed that I expected him to be. Given the fact that he got to choose the questions that were presented to the candidates, they were more fair and balanced than I had anticipated.

Respectfully, Mr. Bozell
October 8, 2008 - 12:52 ET by Lame CherryI would suggest Mr. Bozell that your Brokaw home run was more of a foul ball as you apparently missed Brokaw consistantly asking John McCain the "response" question first not giving him time to collect his thoughts after just answering the question.
Mr. Obama even jumped up to answer a question as he knew it was his turn and Brokaw still went to Mr. McCain.
Now John McCain did a wonderful job in thinking on his feet, but let us not call a dinger a home run.

Tom Brokaw
October 8, 2008 - 13:04 ET by VinncyGI think the key to the debate was what Browkaw said at the very beginning HE reviewed the questions, HE decided what was important to ask. Not one question about Obama associations, Not one question about Obama's ties to Fanny and Freddie. No questions about Resko.
It was strictly talking points, nothing gained about who Obama is or is not. McCain is an open book, but who is Obama?
Did you really expect Brokaw...
October 8, 2008 - 13:09 ET by PrairieSkyto ask questions in those areas?? I certainly didn't. Yeah, it would have been great to have those areas covered last night, but as a lefty, there is no way that Brokaw was going to go there.
