For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: we risk a disintegration of global finance within days.
We face extreme danger. Unless there is immediate intervention on every front by all the major powers acting in concert, we risk a disintegration of global finance within days. Nobody will be spared, unless they own gold bars.
It is quite clear that many people in America, likely thanks to astoundingly poor reporting by a largely ignorant media, have absolutlely no idea of what's going on in the global financial markets, and what's behind it.
The British Telegraph has an absolutely must-read article today that accurately explained just how close things are to a total meltdown, and how the world's central banks -- in particular, the ECB which has been mismanaged by chairman Jean Claude Trichet for years!!! -- have incompetently added to the problem.
This is not just about bad loans, bad lenders, bad Wall Streeters, and bad government. It is also about bad central bankers. Do yourself a favor and read the whole thing.

October 6, 2008 - 09:36 ET by Kingfish17Our financial mess is mainly about bad government. Central banks = government.
"Bad"--you bet
October 6, 2008 - 09:47 ET by iveseenitallRight on, Kingfish17. As is coming to light in America, the Democrats stiffled every attempt at mortgage reform because of the sleazy relationships with Fannie and Freddie. And so many of our politicians have been living the good life while our nation is falling further into the abyss, morally as well as financially. Real reform at every level, beginning with TERM LIMITS, must be initiated. Sadly, most Americans don't trust that reform will ever come. Are we doomed? That's the big questiion.

October 6, 2008 - 09:52 ET by GothampcUnfortunately your idea doesn't quite work. The media has a huge impact on America and is saturated with liberal ideology. As for the US itself, it
October 6, 2008 - 09:53 ET by dscottAs for the US itself, it has not yet exhausted its policy arsenal. It can escalate further up the nuclear ladder. The Fed can cut interest rates from 2pc to zero. If that fails, it can let rip with the mass purchase of US debt.
“The US government has a technology, called a printing press,” said Fed chief Ben Bernanke in November 2002. (His helicopter speech).
In extremis, the Treasury/Fed can swoop into any market to shore up asset prices. They can buy Florida property. They can even buy SUV guzzlers from the car lots in Detroit, and mangle them in scrap yards. As Bernanke put it, the Fed can “expand the menu of assets that it buys.”
Here lies both the peril and a devious silver lining. If the fed uses the nuclear option of printing money, we risk devaluing the dollar to the Mexican Peso via inflation not seen since the Great Depression in Germany after WWI. If they do that, everyone will pull money out of the banks to purchase hard assets to preserve the value of their money but in the process cause ALL of the Banks to collapse at once. The silver lining, that $4 trillion held by foreigners, in order to inject this money into the world economy, the Treasury would by back ALL bonds held by foreigners thus erasing half the national debt. Perverse isn't it?

The dollar's strength is
October 6, 2008 - 10:41 ET by dscottThe dollar's strength is due to the relative weakness of the European economic system and Euro. The dollar looks strong because the Euro is devaluing at a faster pace. Add to this the price of oil has dropped significantly, remember in the world economy both the dollar and oil are fungible and therefore oil = dollar. When oil costs less dollars, the dollar in essence gets stronger. The silver lining for the US is the Euro is not really fungalble thus has no carrying capacity thus can not retain it's value. The Euro is a fiction and now those who hold Euros will either end up with nothing or the European Union will have to intervene massively in a coordinated fashion.
The hidden weapon of the Dollar is the ability to buy back bonds that are denominated in dollars. A bond is essentially a dollar with interest. IF the Treasury has it's act together it won't willy nilly print money to pump through the banks but exchange dollars for bonds.

Crash may not be preventable
October 6, 2008 - 10:08 ET by richb313Not only a crash in the world wide economic markets may not be preventable but a loss of confidence in worldwide currency markets may not be far behind. Currency is the agreed upon fiction that we all subscribe to. Money only has value because we believe it has value. No matter what anyone says about GDP or a net worth of something or another no modern money has any backing except the good faith of those that use it.
The MSM are as responsible for this mess as any one else is. The nuts and bolts of this meltdown ave been know for quite a while. I know I have been aware of this house of cards for at least 3 years. I found out by piecing together a lot of different facts. The MSM did not do the job they are supposed to do and be our watchdog. The story was too dull, too hard to understand blah blah blah.
Nothing in the bailout legislation passed has any provisions to correct the underlying problems and in fact the very bailout legislation will in all likelyhood extend the pain and recovery.
I wish I was smart enough to know what to do. The only thing I am fairly sure of is the actions taken so far are little more than a bandaid. We have committed huge amounts of our treasury to prop up a system that has so many systemic problems that a collapse and re-build may be the only realistic solution.
Panic
October 6, 2008 - 10:12 ET by Kingfish17What we are witnessing in the global stock market sell-off is a classic Panic, (as in the Panic of 1873, which led to a short and severe economic downturn). I am hoping that this is the beginning of a bottoming process that is preceded by the "Sell Everything" type of panic that is common in market bottoms.
There is no doubt we are in for a slow down. The leveredged economy where consumers borrow beyond their means to buy things they don't need had to end some day. But America has seen fantastic economies in the past that were not based on borrowed money. Those days will return, unless our government gets too involved in the free market process.

I agree with your comments,
October 6, 2008 - 10:41 ET by Kingfish17I agree with your comments, billb, except the part about your home losing 20% of it's value. Depending on where your house is, the peak in value for homes in 2006 and 2007 will be very similar to the value of NASDAQ in 1999 and early 2000. I don't think we'll see those home prices for a long, long time.
A three bedroom, one and one-half bath, in suburban California was never worth one million dollars.
Housing prices were artificially escalated because of our government. The free market, if left alone, would never value homes at those lofty levels. ANYTHING the governemnt gets involved in ends up costing more money then if left alone. Think healthcare and college as the two prime examples of this.
Your house artificially ran up in value becaues of:
1. No money down home purchases implicitly guaranteed by the government, (FNMA and FHLMC).
2. Total disregard for credit scoring and income verification encouraged by Fair Housing laws.
3. Super low interest rates that allowed people to be deceived into thinking that they could afford the monthly payments on a home they had no business buying.
Investors would never buy these mortgages if they were not guaranteed by our government. These mortgages should never have been made, and your home should never have been valued at that atificial top. (And don't beat yourself up and think that you should have "sold" at that artificial top. No one is that good.........although some people are that lucky!)
Sounds good to me!

My house is nearly paid off, my retirement is practically guaranteed, my job is very secure, so I don't care if the market tanks. I hope a bunch of dirt-bags like Obama, Dodd, Frank, Raines, Buffet all lose their shirts, and some of them take a 1929 swan dive off the top of an office building.
But sadly, the wrong people will get blamed for this, the innocent will suffer and the country will be FDR'ed again and all the efforts and sacrifices we made since 1945 to combat and defeat Communism will have been in vain.

The real issue was are we going to have bank failures and a credit crisis for 8 months or so with inflation at 4-5% or are we going to have the bank faliures and credit crisis for 2-4 years with inflation at 7-10%. Unfortunately, the Senate and the House voted for the later instead of doing nothing and accepting the former.

I know there are more important and much more dangerous issues concerning Obama, but the one issue that seems to bother me alot is the idea that Obama can consider himself a leader by voting over 100 times in the Senate "present". This alone tells me he has no business being a leader of the greatest nation on earth. A leader votes with conviction, not PRESENT which is tantamount to telling everyone 'I don't want anyone to know how I really feel about this subject'. This man is a national disaster waiting to happen!

CT,
October 6, 2008 - 14:10 ET by Indiana JoeYeah, the "present" thing shows a weak spine at best. No convictions, no principles. Stick a finger to the wind, and if you're not sure, hit a lay-up.
But it could be part-and-parcel of a campaign of deception, too. Hiding your true beliefs, talking in generalities about "change" and "hope," attacking any naysayers and trying to silence dissent. "They are hateful!" "They are greedy!" "It's their fault!" "Truth squads," that should be a really scary term. I hate to come out and say it, but it makes me think of another time in another country. About 75 years ago, across "the Pond," as the British say.
Does that sound too paranoid? Too alarmist? Maybe. Outrageous? Unbelievable?
I'm not 100% convinced. Very worrisome, I would say.

Sarah Palin: A modern day Esther
October 6, 2008 - 12:54 ET by Lame CherryNote: I'm not vouching for this Pastor,
but I do know he has been a busy beaver before the debates.
I would suggest all read the story of Esther CAREFULLY in paying
attention, pray for Gov. Palin and God's plan no matter what it is,
because America is going to be facing a horrendous time.
J~
Pastor Mark Arnold (PLEASE READ ENTIRE STORY BELOW)
This
past Tuesday, the McCain / Palin Bus came through a little town called,
Lebanon , Ohio. The LORD allowed me to go to the Rally giving them a
message that He wanted me to personally deliver.
Sunday
Night - a burden hit me that would only shake me to my knees - I prayed
and wept for our Nation. Never has my heart been so broken before God.
I literally interceded for these wonderful people who do not deserve
all the hate against them. The GOD-Haters are going to try
everything to stop them, but they will not succeed!
God
is not pleased with the "bashing" in the News of this "Anointed"
person. He has called her for this time! I promised God that I would
pray and hold them up in prayer. I would "listen" out and be mindful of
where they were. The following day is important in this
time-line...because I didn! 9;t even know until God spoke to me...
Monday
and into Monday Night - the burden of prayer was so heavy that I was
literally shaking and could not stop weeping. I didn't know that they were coming to Ohio . I prayed and walked and wept and walked. I prayed and prayed and wept and prayed...
Tuesday
at 2:00 A.M. - God spoke these words to me - "...Go turn the Radio on!"
Immediately the Reporter's Words were - "McCain & Palin Bus to be
in Lebanon later this morning for a 10:00 A.M. Rally!"
Immediately
on hearing that news, I heard God again...God said, "You are to go. You
will meet them and give them a message for Me!"
I prayed as
an intercessor and went to a place in prayer that I don't think I've
ever been...because the LORD had just visited me...and I knew I was on
a " Mission " I had now been up since Sunday NIght...and now it's
Tuesday and I've got to go on the "WORD of the LORD." He sure became My
Strength as this unfolds... I didn't stop praying until I drove over to
the town and parked the car. The News would later report they were
expecting 5,000 people and the actual head-count of those who had been
scanned was more than 10,000 people.
I
simply obeyed...and God actually told me where to stand, who to talk
to...and when to be on the move. I had sure learned on the Mission
Field, when God wants to open a door, He will do it at the appropriate
time. He always has someone to assist...and even those standing beside
you may just be an Angel.
I struck up a conversation with an
agent on the ground - he simply said, "I can't allow you to stand
here!" Here is where the bus was going to actually pull up to. They had
to make a much larger perimeter so the entire area was now being moved
back several blocks. The only other thing he told me to do was to go
through the metal detector zone and just watch from the back. So,
that's what I did.
Due
to sensitivity of the Internet...I can't share much of the story as to
what happened next was a definite GOD THING ALL THE WAY.
Looking
over the shoulders and backs and heads of all those people...I knew it
would take a miracle for what GOD told me to do.
As I was
standing there, two Boy Scouts came running up my back...literally,
they almost knocked me to the ground because they were running so fast behind me...up my back and over to the right. These Boy Scouts were about Junior High Age. Their Scout
Leader and several others
were behind them...but as the two out front was trying to push through
the crowd, saying they were late...the smaller scouts were left in
their dust. The Scout Leader who was with a McCain Rep from the State
grabbed me and told me bring the other Scouts up front as they try to keep up with the first two that just came through.
I
just became the leader of the rest of the Scouts to lead them right up
front and center. As the Rep was shouting back at me...to bring the
Scouts forward...the people parted just like God parted the Red Sea.
I
marched those boys right up front and to the right of the stage as one
was looking from the back. When I got there I was fifteen feet from the
podium. GOD said, "Stand here, and don't move from this spot."
Within five minutes...the bus pulled up
and around the other side McCain, Sarah Palin and her husband Todd
stepped up and the speeches took off. I was where God placed me...and
even Sarah Palin and Todd were standing on my side of the stage. I made
eye contact, I gave them thumbs up gestures..and I knew they were just
happy to see me standing there. Ha Ha
When they came around
the podium and started on the other side, I knew they were coming right
toward me, a little lady who stood by me, reached up and told the Rep
that they had promised a Picture with her because she was the one who
had lost a son in Iraq, recently. The Rep confirmed she would get a pic
with them and they would talk to her. When McCain came to hug her... he
immdiately shook my hand and following his moment with her, I shook his
hand as he grabbed my hand, now for the second time, and I said, "God
wants you to know that I'm praying for you, Sir!" He thanked me and
kept smiling. I repeated that phrase to him five times. He grabbed my
hands and looked right into my eyes and said, "I won't make it without
prayer. Sir, Thank You for praying for me, and don't let one day go by
that you don't pray for me. I need all the prayers that I can get.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!"
As
he moved to my right, Sarah Palin, came over to my left side...standing
over the crowd and then looking at the little lady who had lost the
son. It took a moment for her to shake some hands and people were
pushing in all around. Sarah came and got on her hands and knees on
that side of the stage and hugged that little Mom, telling her, "...it
was not in vain." She promised her support.
It was at this
moment Sarah Palin, reached out for me to help her up and as I was
assisting her to stand I was now face to face with her and GOD said,
"Open up your Mouth and I will fill it."
Here is what came out...
"God wants you to know that you are a present day Esther!"
[She immediately began to cry]!
"God wants to tell you that you are Chosen for such a time as this!"
"You are called, and chosen to be a leader."
"Don't lose heart and don't fear man."
"The
news and nay-sayers and criticizers are going to be very hateful toward
you... and in the days ahead they are going to turn up the heat...but
do not fear."
"You are a present day Esther." You are an Esther. You are an Esther!
"Keep your eyes on GOD and know that He has chosen you to Reign!"
"Stay strong..be strong...don't tire.
Don't be weary in well-doing. Be strong."
Her husband Todd came over and I told him what I told her. He began to cry.
I
emphasized the fact that he was to guard her at this time...and know
that "...she is GOD-CALLED and GOD-ANOINTED." "...this is a GOD-THING
and your wife is a Present day Esther...she is for God to use at this
time...She is an Esther...she is an Esther...she is an Esther."
"You will be hated...but stand strong...GOD has called both of you to stand!"
"We are praying and I am praying for you...!"
At
this moment, McCain came right to where I was finishing talking to Todd
and I told Mr. McCain exactly what I told to Sarah and Todd Palin.
"Mr. McCain, ...they are called of God and she is an Esther."
"Don't lose hope and don't
lose heart."
"We are praying for all of you!"
He
shook my hand and with a deep look of understanding what I had just
said, he said, "Thank you for your prayers and support...I really do
mean that!"
And he turned and shook more hands...and I watched them as they went through the crowd.
When
I got to my car I sat there for quite a long time...knowing the GOD of
the Universe had just used me to deliver a message confirming to Sarah and Todd to realize they are truly chosen vessels of God.
I
wept. I have not stopped praying and crying. My heart is full knowing
they had to have all the staging and all the hype and all the
crowd...but the GOD of Heaven and Earth...wanted to give them a
Divine-God-Appointment!
To God be all the GLORY and HONOR.
If anyone wants to know if I believe God can speak. Yes...Absolutely, is my Answer!
Be praying for me..and let me know what you think about all of this.

Joke of the Day:
October 6, 2008 - 13:07 ET by RESTLESS 1A lawyer runs a stop sign and gets pulled over by a sheriff's deputy. He thinks that he is smarter than the deputy because he is a lawyer from New York and is certain that he has a better education then any cop from Houston , Texas . He decides to prove this to himself and have some fun at the Texas deputy's expense.
The deputy says,' License and registration, please.'
'What for?' says the lawyer.
The deputy says, 'You didn't come to a complete stop at the stop sign.'
Then the lawyer says, 'I slowed down, and no one was coming.'
'You still didn't come to a complete stop,' says the deputy. 'License and registration, please.'
The lawyer says, 'What's the difference?'
'The difference is you have to come to complete stop, that's the law. License and registration, please!' the Deputy says.
Lawyer says, 'If you can show me the legal difference between slow down and stop, I'll give you my license and registration; and you give me the ticket. If not, you let me go and don't give me the ticket.'
'That sounds fair. Please exit your vehicle, sir,' the deputy says.
At this point, the deputy takes out his nightstick and starts beating the ever-loving out of the lawyer and says, 'Do you want me to stop, or just slow down?'

Pleased Newsbusters posted what I have been posting
October 6, 2008 - 13:16 ET by Lame CherryI'm not going to bother reading what the UK is talking about, but I wanted to address what Newsbusters was posting above and remind people of the facts.
Historical duality is taking place. I have been warning a major Eurasian World War is coming. I will also remind people that when in the 30's stock crash that America did not stop. People still worked, people still gardened, people still had money and people still got married and had babies.
Maybe Newsbusters should pay a bit more attention to the Bible in noting that gold and silver is not going to save a person as people will cast it into the streets.
You can not eat gold, gold is heavy and big deal in you give 5000 bucks for a loaf of bread, maybe you should have been buying some flour and putting a bay leaf in it to keep the worms out of it.
Do not get caught up in Wall Street people. Your local bank is fine. Your state is fine. Your economy is fine as you operate in a different economy than the central banking cartels. Gee there is that word again I was mocked for on this site by some inept bloggers not 6 months ago, and there is Newsbusters focusing on the central banks now too.
The Rothschilds with the other European families who run that caste system and use the American underlings like Rockefeller to control American finance crashed this system for Barack Obama.
I posted here that this is the 3rd 9 11 attack on America. It is all monetary just like the one to elect Bill Clinton was initiated against Bush 41.
The citizen's individual responsibility is what I noted before. Pay off all your debt. If you don't owe anything then you can't be destroyed by debt.
Keep a cash reserve. I was moved to write cash was king 6 months ago and lo and behold nation rapist Warren Buffett uttered those words about cash being necessary.......and gee whiz who has cash now but Buffett buying up everything.
This implosion is but the first of many things coming in this spiral now that President Bush is on his way out of office. All of this was delayed for him and now it will just move forward on schedule.
The central Europeans always muck things up. They caused 3 world wars already. (Yes I said 3 and it has been 3 and if you are not a student of history look up the 7 years war). They will cause this worsening effect now as they are part of an old order which is a generational unroyal preisthood within a family caste.
So quit wringing your hands people and look to the future and possibilities. We have in our midst the seed of our tomorrow in Reagan's shining city on a hill. I have written extensively on the economic plans which will have America sailing along as this storm engulfs the world. I put it out there and the too intelligent dismissed it and now are worried about a meltdown.
Great I say to the meltdown as in McCain and Palin America has the root of our solution in production, energy independence and moral people who are going to be able to be worked through.
George Washington it is said stated he was shown 3 tribulations for America. Gen. McClelland said he was visited by Gen. Washington too warning him. The Revolution and Civil War have passed. The last one is destined to unfold now in most of the world lining up against this God planted American people.
Keep your economic books balanced, your powder dry and maybe pay attention when I tell you here that America needs to seize robber baron loot like Buffetts he has stolen and seize those billions in greenhouse studies and pour them into grants for homeowners to build SURVIVAL SHELTERS.
Building them will generate an economic boom. Building them will keep communities safe and building them will keep a nuclear attack from occurring as if all the Americans are going to survive to nuke the enemy, the enemy will not choose nuclear weapons and leave America alone.
This is all simple and nothing in the least to be concerned about. The solutions are there and God always brings forward His chosen to lead America. I'm confident of that today and I could care less what some brother Brit is prattling on about.
God has the solutions in our forefathers doctrines and in McCain and Palin now.

Panic of 1873
October 6, 2008 - 14:30 ET by Kingfish17Stock markets were shut down for about 10 days after the bottom fell out from overbuilding in railroads. There was still a severe economic downturn that lasted 3-5 years. (If the Feds had intervened like they did in the Great Depression of the 1930s it probably would have lasted 10 years.)
There is one undeniable fact. The stock market is a better buy today then it was at 14,000. I didn't say a good buy.....I said a better buy!

I don't pretend to know all
October 6, 2008 - 14:37 ET by Indiana JoeI don't pretend to know all the ins and outs of the market, but isn't it basically what people believe the market's going to do that drives it? Whether it's new product announcements, take-overs, weather, oil prices, or what-have-you? It's about confidence, in one form or another, right? You sell if you're afraid it's on the way down, and buy if you believe it's on the way up. My limited (and very basic) understanding, anyway.
If that's the case, maybe closing the financial "pundits" would be a better move.
Yeah, I know, but I can dream, can't I?
Just as an aside, the media has been talking about "entering a recession, maybe a depression" since this sorry mess boiled over. I thought they said we were already in a recession?
It's that damned "confidence" thing again, ain't it?

IJ, its like my econ professor told us-
October 6, 2008 - 23:34 ET by R D HelmThe economy essentially runs on fear. Specifically, Fear of Want.
As such, people's perceptions of what the future may bring in the short, near, and long terms have an affect on their behavior in the present.
As for a recession, the "textbook" definitiion of which is two consecutive quarters of decline in the growth of the GDP, have not been realized as yet.
Yet.
And you are correct about that "confidence" thing. Clearly, the players have little or no confidence in the bailout, which is why the market began its current slide even before it was signed into law.
The market did, however, show signs of a rebound just before the market closed today.
Tomorrow will be a very interesting day, as we will know for certain if the more spineless investers have recovered from their little panic-selling hissy fit.

The entire democrat platform is based on bad financial policy, so why worry about one more? And the bad news is, it looks like Obama is going to win, so we're going to get cap & trade plus a whole lot more, meaning McCain is the least of our worries.

October 6, 2008 - 16:46 ET by PrairieSkyMcCain would, despite what he may have said, involve himself with Algore in anything, do you? I don't...I think that is just talk...stupid talk, but just talk. It's my opinion that McCain's close friendship and association with Joe Lieberman would prevent him from having any kind of serious working relationship with Gore. Gore is an imbecile, and after the way that Gore abandoned Lieberman when he ran for president in 2004 and again when he ran for re-election to the Senate in 2006, I can't imagine that he would seriously deal with Gore in any way. I think if either of these two men were to be considered for McCain's cabinet, it would be Lieberman, not Gore.

Great Depression = Great Service!
October 6, 2008 - 14:39 ET by Kingfish17Everyone here seems down in the dumps today, but there is an upside to this, (supposed), economic calamity. I'm old enough to remember what good service was all about. My first job was working as a bag boy in a major grocery store. We were taught how to bag properly, we had to wear ties to work, we had to look the customer in the eye and thank them for their business, while smiling. The store manager hovered over us, and if we didn't deliver good service, we got fired, soon to be replaced by another teenager looking for a good job.
I still see Help Wanted signs all over the place everywhere I go. Maybe if we have a major economic downturn we can once again have that "service" experience. Does anyone under 30 even know what I'm talking about?

October 6, 2008 - 16:53 ET by Indiana JoeGee, KF, I thought you really meant the Great Depression! Hopefully, we don't have to go that far to see a re-birth of good service!
But you're right, service has taken a back seat. It's been replaced by "you want fries with that?" and a snarky attitude too often.
Btw, the grocery I grew up with forbade tipping carry-out boys!

Full Employment
October 6, 2008 - 17:48 ET by Kingfish17I sure hope we don't have to have a re-do of the Great Depression to get good service around here!
But I have come to conclusion that if you have full employment, (the U.S. has actually had negative unemployment for the last 10 years or so, but don't me started on that), you just can't have great service. No one wants to fire anyone because you can't get a replacement hire.
I've been to plenty of restaurants where tables are empty but there is a line to get seated. The reason is usually the same,..."We can't hire enough people to work here".
I've seen both sides enough to know...
October 6, 2008 - 17:06 ET by UnsaneI'm old enough to remember what good service was all about. This means doing things like:
1) Taking endless streams of profanity and screaming from customers and just smiling the whoile time. Most often when this happens, there isn't one single thing you can do to help them anyway, but the customer could care less.
2) Putting up with endless rudeness and hostility from customers.
Having been on both sides of this, I know what good service is - given and received. That being said, I absolutely refuse to work in the public eye again because most customers, unfortunately, have not matured much past nursery school and yet demand that I constantly kiss their a__es. No thanks.
One of my last straws was calling a woman to explain to her what happened to her shipment, and then listening to enough profanity to make an Army First Sergeant blush, and then have her repeatedly question the legitimacy of my birth, among many other things. When her issue was resolved - much to my disgust - I left a message on her answering machine, which she made sure to end with a very sweet "blessings!!!"
Weeks later, no one in the office could understand why I quit such a great job in such a wonderful work environment.
I won't even volunteer in the public eye again. I helped wrap Christmas presents for a Red Cross fundraiser - providing a FREE service - and I and my fellow volunteers got rewarded with immense hostility from patrons who hated the way their presents were wrapped (and some looked downright professionally done even)...this days before Christmas and for a FREE service. So I pulled the plug on helping anyone during the holidays after that episode.
I have seen enough of both sides of the issue to not ever start whining about "service".
Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief. Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.
I'm old enough to know all
October 6, 2008 - 17:24 ET by bigtimerI'm old enough to know all about it too...as the majority of my life I have worked with people in the public too...sure there are arseholes, but you usually should know how to deal with them, and by far they are in the minority.
Sounds like you shouldn't work in the public environment you were referring to Uns.
I mean no offense, but you seem to have the majority of problems, not the other way around....you usually get as good as you give when it comes to the general population.
...some people just aren't made to work around this type of environment...and they move on to other ways to make a living that satisfies them....and the people they didn't like to work with or wait on in the first place.
Just a thought from a different perspective.
"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh
Well, allow me to retort!
October 7, 2008 - 13:46 ET by UnsaneI understand completely. Sure, those types are the minority (but the last job I worked was the other way around entirely, which is why I quit as fast as I did)...but I brook no excuse for bad behavior. My time in the military beat what little tolerance I had for nursery-school antics from adults out of me once and for all.
The last job I had, indeed, seemed to encourage rude, angry, hostile, negative behavior amongst everyone there - customers, management, employees... I couldn't see doing that job for six months, much less 20 years. Bye.
This is also why I am very understanding of what people who DO work in the public eye face every day and why I do my best to meet them halfway. (Tipping waitstaff at 25% instead of 15% is one way. Call that a "makeup call" for some idiot who throws as much crap as possible at said waiter/waitress, and then tips a dollar, if that).
Indeed, the best jobs I have had are the ones where I toil far away from the public eye and just make sure the "machine" is "greased", as it were.
But...
I mean no offense, but you seem to have the majority of problems, not the other way around....you usually get as good as you give when it comes to the general population. You would think that, but it isn't so. I am one of those people who think to themselves "what if I was the customer?" the whole time. And from there I apply what is referred to as The Golden Rule by some. The first two jobs in the public eye I had, this worked great. I still got some idiots, but by and large they were rarities. But, even if there is only one, I want nothing to do with it. No taking the good with the bad here. Not when it comes to bad behavior from adults who should know better. Even I noted once when working at an amusement park years ago that "The children behave MUCH better than the adults!" A fairly damning statement, no?
Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief. Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.

Yeah, I know, the continued economic crisis and the bail-out last week -- especially McCain's vote for it -- along with the bumbling of Palin in September with those interviews, has hurt them a lot.
I'm just wondering if these latest polls *officially* take in, fully, responses from the VP debate Thursday. That Fox guy who does monitoring of people's reactions said "wait until Tuesday... you'll see the poll numbers go up", and wondering if it takes several days for polls to clear a certain date to reflect that event (and I don't think he was referring to McCain's debate Tuesday, but sounded like he knew that was the date to get the complete reaction to last Thursday...?)

October 6, 2008 - 18:46 ET by MrShyYeah, let's see tomorrow...
Also, reading CNN.com and Fox (on TV) neither mentioned "this reflects the reaction to Palin's VP debate" or anything, so I think it doesn't, yet.
The key thing here are the swing/battleground states, which CNN loves to tell us "are all in favor of Obama" although almost every one of them is miniscule at best, like 1 or 2 points, or virtually tied. Man, they are doing everything in their power to present this as a done-deal.
It's totally hilarious (well, not really :p) how they would just mention McCain/Palin's big bump all through the early half of September only in passing, or in tiny print/links. Now they're LOVING the latest polls, and plastering them!
Also, it's sick and sad how Palin's HUGE turn-outs at her rallies/speeches is hardly covered, except for Fox, while CNN "urgently" cuts to Bruce performing at about the zillionth Obama rally.

Shy, don't panic yet!!!
October 6, 2008 - 21:57 ET by PrairieSkyIt's true, it isn't great news. But...There is a growing sense out there that there may be some monkey business going on with some (or a lot) of these polls. The percentage swings in the last week, even if you take into account the anger associated with the bailout, are just too big to be real, some are saying. For instance, McCain was up between 5 and 10 points in many battleground state polls a week or so ago, and now, all of a sudden, he's down by the same margins, and in one poll he's down by 12 points?? I don't think so.
If you look at the internals of a lot of these polls, they are weighted more heavily in favor of the Democrats-I saw one that polled 49% Democrats, and just 35% Republicans...A 14 point difference! That's hardly a fair and equitable sampling. And this type of stuff is going in most of the polls. There is a poll out of Virginia that indicates that there are more registered Democrats in the state than registered Republicans, and that isn't supported by any other info or poll that I've seen...ever. Virginia has always been a reliable red state, although it has been trending blue the last few years. That said, no one believes that the state is now more blue than red.
Another example is Florida. Less than two weeks ago, McCain was up by as much as double digits in many polls...Now many polls are showing McCain down by as much as double digits. His support in Florida has been very solid for months and months. I cannot believe that there has been that big of a swing in that short of a time. My folks live in Florida, and they are telling me that those numbers don't make sense, based on what they are seeing and hearing there.
So, it's like Rush said to a guy who called in on Friday, who said he was beginning to panic. Rush told him not to panic, yet. He said he wasn't panicking, and that he'd let people know when it was time to panic, but that that time isn't here yet, and hopefully won't come. So, hang in there, Shy. A lot will depend on what happens tomorrow night in the debate. If the debates go well for McCain, and McCainPalin stay on the offensive, I think we have a real chance to turn this around. We'll see what happens...

Some various comments
October 6, 2008 - 15:37 ET by UnsaneI fired upen my latest edition of The Economist last night and read that while banks in the United States typically loan out 96 cents to every deposited dollar, European banks loan out 1.40 euros for every euro on deposit. Scary stuff.
No, people for the most part in the United States simply don't know about the conditions in Europe. They see that the euro is stronger than the dollar as of late and they think all is great there. Not so. Spain is going through drastic problems related to its very own property bubble. France is officially in recession now, and the Germans, whose finance minister was openly gloating about the problems we are experiencing, are now in trouble themselves.
Things are going to suck for the next few days, but something tells me that as bad as things are here, they will pale to what will happen in Europe. Cold comfort to us, perhaps, because our markets are all interconnected through various means, but that's just what I see happening. But I also note that somebody has to have some cash out there. After all, why else did the Dow fall 700 only to close down by 369?
Interestingly, it should be noted that the original ECB head was to be a Dutchman. Then the French did what they do best: pout and whine. When the French started doing that, the powers that be there decided to shut them up by appointing Trichet. Some good that did for them, huh?
Whoever casts a vote for Obama-Biden is nothing more than a common thief. Whoever fails to vote against them is nothing more than a moral coward.
Unsane,
October 6, 2008 - 17:36 ET by Indiana JoeI saw some stuff about the impending melt-down in Europe today. Something about a 4B Euro "bail-out" from Germany, was it? Got me wondering how much they'll try to blame on us, and how much is strictly their fault? I'm sure they'll blame more on us than is true, but what else is new? And, as you say, the interconnect between the markets will mean there's some influence.
Loan values 40% above assets? What happens if there's a run on the banks in Europe? Scary indeed. Glad I'm not heavily into Euros! What happens to the socialist utopia that I hear much of Europe has become when their currency collapses?
I always kind of felt the whole EU concept was flawed from the start. These countries have been in various states of war since the fall of the Roman Empire or so, after all. Trying to decide on a "standard" banana (remember that one?) did not inspire confidence in the endeavour, to me at least. I even predicted to a big cheerleader for the EU at work that it wouldn't last 5 years.
I think I'm a couple years late with that estimate, but I think it's still valid in the long term. Did they ever get their Constitution ratified? I don't think so, but not sure.

Hi IJ... Just wanted you
October 6, 2008 - 17:44 ET by bigtimerHi IJ...
Just wanted you to know I'm with you about the EU...I told my husband it would never last...it would have to crumble within it's own messy self...
Plus I am pretty sure they never have had their Constitution ratified.
didn't mean to butt in here, just saw it real quick before I have to leave for a bit...sure Uns knows some about the ratification too...

"But one man’s recession can be another man’s opportunity. Hispanic workers bucked the overall trend, their employment rising, their unemployment rate in decline. (Hispanics, heavily foreign-born are a proxy for immigrants, whom the Federal government does not identify in this survey).
Here is the September job action by ethnic group:
American workers became discouraged in September. More than 120,000 stopped looking for work and left the labor force. They are not counted as unemployed; as a result the national unemployment rate did not increase – remaining at 6.1 percent."

Palin smacks down lefty protestors (Gateway Pundit)

October 6, 2008 - 23:15 ET by PrairieSkyI just love her! Isn't she terrific? She didn't miss a beat! Sarah put that yutz in his place, and still managed (even though it was obvious that she was annoyed) to preface her comment with, "...bless your heart, sir..."
Sarah Palin is a real lady and a class act. Absolutely fabulous!
