For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Sarah vs. Joe!
Let's get the predictions in writing, folks:
- Who will win tonight?
- Who will make the biggest gaffe?
- Will Ifill be fair, or clearly hit Sarah with tougher questions?
- Will the candidates' performances be irrelevant as whatever happens media will declare Biden the winner?
- Will anything significant happen tonight that will impact the election, or are vice presidential debates totally inconsequential?

But because the Government needed all the information about each dead criminal they entered it into a data base so they could have these dead criminals vote for MC Cain in Ohio if need be. What She Should Do
October 2, 2008 - 09:48 ET by Gat New YorkYou are right about Ifill and Palin should immediately come out and innoculate herself by congratulating Ifill on her book about Obama and jokingly hope that it is not as successful as she hopes, because that will only happens if Obama wins.
She has to get away from the overused soundbites she has used and eal specifically with what is asked. If she is not that familiar with a country or its leader then she should respond by saying that she may not be as familiar with people from some other countries as Biden is but she is more familiar than her opponent with the people of this country.
She should also remind Biden that FDR was not president when the stock market crashed in 1929 nor did he go on TV to speak to the nation. She should also bring into question his two made-up stories of being under enemy fire. That might get him riled up enough to make a gaffe or pull a Rick Lazio.

October 2, 2008 - 10:57 ET by celatorI agree. But because the MSM has absolutely no credibility in the mind of the average citizen, their "praise" of Biden will not carry long term weight.
I think Gov. Palin is energized by criticism from those who underestimate her. She's one of those rare people who says, "bring it on". The MSM simply cannot understand someone like her. They don't know anyone like her.
95 percent of viewers will forget 95 percent of the words spoken by the VP candidates tonight in about 15 minutes. That's just the way it is.
What they will remember is how the candidates presented themselves. Were they confident? Did they connect personally with the viewers? Do they seem trustworthy? Did they have shifty yes? Did they show genuine humor at the right moments? Etc. That's what people take away from these TV debates.
Biden has spent a career framing himself in the public eye as a loose cannon, a gaffe machine, a plagerizer, an "insider", a politician who will say anything, regardless of the truth. He is a "please like me" loudmouth, and will lose the debate on the aformentioned "presentation qualities." As you say, the MSM will praise him to the rafters, as we already know. Good grief, I could, right now, write the stories they will craft for him.
The moderator has already been compromised by her obvious admiration of Obama and what he represents. That works nicely in Gov. Palin's favor.
And for the "conservative" commentators who have, even this close to Gov. Palin's debate night, have attempted to raise doubts re her performance tonight, I will remember who they are, forever. Their public and ridiculous commentaries remind me of one of George Orwell's phrases in 1984: Their comments are a "well-timed stroke of treachery."
Gov. Palin will do very well indeed in tonight's debate.

In the year 2008 it appears that this fable has been changed and now the ants who planned for the future should now have to help out the grasshopper who didn't. It appears all you have to do now in current times is not plan, and then when things fail ask the government to bail you out, and then when things don't improve after that, just ask for another bailout and have those who did plan and did the right things, pay for your bailout.

Secondly, not being a lawyer, why would she be familiar with Supreme Court decisions by name? The only other one I could think of off the top of my head was Kelo. October 2, 2008 - 11:03 ET by cvgbuckeyeI have an idea bal. If Iffil asks Sarah about Roe v. VP Debate Trail Leads to Bill Ayers
October 2, 2008 - 09:49 ET by BobMcCartyWritesHere's a tidbit about which I hope Sarah Palin is aware:
The St. Louis Athletic Complex at Washington University in St. Louis, site of tonight's vice presidential debate, is on the same ground where the ROTC buildings on the campus stood before they were burned to the ground as anti-Vietnam war sentiment reached a fever pitch in May 1970. At about the same time, according to Discover the Networks, domestic terrorist Bill Ayers was busy carrying out similarly detestable activities.
Again, here's to hoping Sarah Palin uses the info to, once again, connect Obama-Biden to Bill Ayers-style terrorism.

3. Why are you consistently wrong regarding foreign affairs? Voting against the Gulf War, voting FOR the war you now say is illegal, claiming earlier that Obama is not ready to be president, wanting to break Iraq up into 3 sectors....your plagarism, your claims of being from a family of coal miners, your claims of being the first in your family to attend a university...

October 2, 2008 - 09:58 ET by JoelCTThere is a guy who has a 5-minute "Report from the Left Coast" named Mike Evans who does his bit at 6:20 AM on KLBJ in Austin, and, I assume, a lot of other radio stations in America.
This morning, he said that Obama loved Star Trek as a kid, and recently he spotted Leonard Nimoy (Spock) at one of his rallies. According to Evans, Obama excidedly ran up to Nimoy, flashed the Vulcan hand signal, and said, "Live Long And Prosper" to Nimoy.
If this had happened to George W. Bush or Sarah Palin, neither one of them could possibly live long enough to live this down. SNL would do bits on it for months. Every time a news story was done on them, it would be mentioned. All of the MSM would make it their top story that day.

Well the Constitution might agree.
October 2, 2008 - 10:20 ET by c5thenThe only specific duties that the Constitution sets for the Vice President is to be "President of the Senate" and to cast any tie breaking votes.
Remember that the VP used to be whoever came in second place in the Presidential voting in the electoral college. That was changed by the 12th Amendment, but the duties of the VP were never modified.
So...Is the President of the Senate a Legislative or Executive position?

October 2, 2008 - 10:43 ET by BDokay, let me take a hack at this....
Senator Biden, do you believe that continued withdrawal of American troops from Iraq will lead to a newly ignited civil war?
Governor Palin, since you were selected as a vice presidential candidate, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has given more press conferences to American reporters than you have. Why do you have less confidence in the American press and people than the president of Iran does? And when will you dare to face the press for real?
Senator Biden, you’ve been one of the Senate’s most ardent drug warriors. You helped create the office of “drug czar”; backed our failed eradication efforts in South America; encouraged the government to seize the assets of people merely suspected of drug crimes; pushed for the expanded use of racketeering and conspiracy laws against drug offenders; advocated the use of the military to fight the drug war; and sponsored a bill that holds venue owners and promoters criminally liable for drug use by people attending concerts and events.
Today, illicit drugs are as cheap and abundant as they were decades ago. Would you agree that the anti-drug policies you’ve championed have failed? If not, how have they succeeded?
As governor of Alaska, you have worked with Democrats like me to achieve goals we both shared. Since becoming the vice presidential nominee of the Republican Party, you’ve done nothing but ridicule Democrats and our goals. How do you expect to be able to get help from Democrats — either as governor or as vice president — after your performance on the campaign trail?
Senator Biden, you told me once that, shortly before the 2004 election, you advised John Kerry to respond harshly to a new Osama bin Laden videotape. You described the conversation this way: “I’m on the phone, I e-mail, I say, ‘John, please, say three things’: ‘How dare bin Laden speak of our president this way.’ No. 2, ‘I know how to deal with preventing another 9/11.’ No. 3, ‘Kill him.’” You then threw up your hands in disgust and said of Senator Kerry, “He didn’t make any of it. Let’s get it straight. None of it.”
This story was entertaining, but it wasn’t strictly accurate. It turned out that you did not, in fact, even speak with Senator Kerry until well after he had issued a vigorous denunciation of bin Laden. This episode is one of several in which you have appeared to exaggerate your importance. Recently, you spoke of being “shot at” in Iraq. This, too, turned out to be false. Why should voters trust you, after you have made so many provably embroidered assertions?

Joe Biden interview on CNN

Campbell Brown: Well Joe, this will probably be a piece of cake for you debating an inexperienced mayor of Wasilla.
Joe Biden: It will be like shooting fish in a barrel Campbell. The chances of Sarah winning this debate are about the same as a white man working behind the counter at 7-11 or a man in a wheelchair standing up.
CB: Are you ready to assume your role as VP?
JB: I think so Campbell. Sure, I'm not as good a choice as Hillary but I know how to lead in a time of crisis. I fancy myself a young Abraham Lincoln. When Lincoln got on tv to deliver the Gettysburg Adress that was leadership. Yes, I know what you're saying to yourself. Sure, Lincoln was a Republican, but that was 1825 and things have changed since then.
CB: Well said Joe.
JB: I just thank God I'm hear to have this debate. After my wife was killed by a drunk driver and after being shot at in Afturkistan I've learned how to live life to the fullest. I think one day I might even give a speech while I am drunk myself.
CB: You're truly an American hero Joe.
JB: While speaking of American Campbell, Barrack America will be the next POTUS. He is the first clean articulate black this country has ever had. I wish we had more of his type in Iowa to do our education system proud. I'll put my Fannie Mae backed mortgage on him if my name is not Neil Kinnock.

Biden: Sure Gwennie, I was just outside the new Busch stadium when all of a sudden, I heard bullets flying around my hybrid limo. At that point, I acted on sheer instict when I jumped out onto the street and tackled the gunman. He looked like Limbaugh and smelled of religion. It was really nothing, any upstanding liberal would have done the same.
Palin: Hold on Joe, didn't the police report say that the sounds you heard were coming from the Jiffy Pop competition at the stadium and the man you accosted was actually Michael Moore on his way to see "An American Carol."

October 2, 2008 - 10:37 ET by play21cwShe will win tonight. Problem is MSM has already set Biden up for the win, saying that any gaffe he makes is excuesable because hes prone.

October 2, 2008 - 10:53 ET by JasonCSo what you're saying is that Palin wins no matter what. Either she
actually, outright wins, or she "loses," but that "loss" is due solely
to things that are out of her hands, like presumed liberal bias on the
part of moderator or on the part of the post-debate analysis; as
opposed to being due to aspects of Palin which have become gradually
well known to the public, namely her inability to get into the issues
and her gift for repeating buzzwords and glittering generalities
without generating substantive arguments.

As I've said elsewhere, I'm not particularly excited about Biden's candidacy. But you know what? His gaffes aside, he has proven himself capable of discussing the issues well. His gaffes are silly, embarassing, and almost completely immaterial to anything pertaining to the political scene today. The post to which I was responding presupposed a paradoxical point of ponderance: that Palin cannot legitimately lose. My post was meant to flesh out the problems of that idea, and to suggest a third term which might come into play: Palin's demonstrated lack of ability to grasp national-level issues.

vp debate
October 2, 2008 - 10:49 ET by AgnosticIn reality I think Biden narrowly wins this debate due to the work his handlers (I don't mean this in a bad way since I'm sure they all have them) have been making sure that he comes across well while debating a woman. Plus, all the questions are going to be coming from a stock of generally liberal leaning inquiries.
Everything about this debate is set for a Biden win and he should be comfortable enough to not get rattled and gaffe or go out of character. The character he will be playing will be one of a confident professor speaking with a colleague when speaking with Ifill and one of a confident professor speaking with a hopeful student when speaking to or about Palin. He will behave as he is being tolerant and act condescending but only enough to appear as a person of superior ranking to Palin.
This allows the media to attack Palin as looking like a schoolgirl getting lectured to by the tenured DC politician. So, while I think Biden will win by a slim margin due to the circumstances of the debate within 30 seconds of the debate ending it will be declared one of the most lopsided debates in American history; like the media even know American history.

Rope a Dope
October 2, 2008 - 11:11 ET by MexNobamaI posted this concept on another thread.
There is no way in Hell that the McCain team has not sat around in their war room and said "They are trying to make Sarah look really bad. What can we do to flip that to our advantage"
My theory is that Sarah has been using Ali's "Rope a Dope" strategy.
The MSM have been throwing everything they have at her since the Convention, and let's be honest, it has worked in the publics eyes. This woman has been called stupid, crooked, reactionary, incompetent, a religious fanatic, two faced...basically every possible insult, including insults that do not stand side by side.
(How can she be stupid and politically cunning at the same time?)
There are no insults left to throw. The MSM are out of ammunition.
Now if she goes out and debates to a solid draw she will win in the eyes of typical Americans.
If Biden makes one silly mistake, one gaffe, one overealous statement about raising taxes...he's toast.
I predict the following:
Palin will come out with exactly the same energy and confidence that she showed at the convention.
I-sore will asked ridiculously slanted questions.
Biden will be condesceneding and there is a likelyhood that he will not be able to answer probing questions about Freddie and Fannie, whereas Palin will handle foreign policy quite well.
Look for a solid Palin victory, with perhaps a key catch phrase that hurts Biden, and a possible Biden gaffe.
BTW How do you guys like the nickname I-sore for Ifill?
Notice how much hatred Sarah gets from really ugly women, both black and whtie?
If they are going to put a pro Obama moderator, hey why not Tyra Banks? At least she's nice to look at!
Palin has done this to herself
October 2, 2008 - 12:42 ET by The ReformerHow can you defend Palin? She's been a total idiot. McCain made the worst possible choice. He had a great plan to run on experience and sound judgement by putting country first. Then he chose Palin for political gain and went against everything he's ever stood for as a Senator. He looks like a terrible flip-flopper. I used to like McCain, but after that I changed my mind. He clearly has bad judgement and is listening to the same people that George Bush has. These people don’t care about good government, they only care about getting elected. And this time, it backfired because everyone hates Bush. He should have chosen a respectable, intelligent, political savvy running mate with youth and maturity to combat his age. Instead he chose a woman who is a great "girl-next door" type, but she in no way can be a world leader - basically she's Bush in a skirt. UGH! I'm so disappointed. I think after the Bailout Bill passes on Friday we may see some serious inflation. I've lost about all confidence in politicians as a result of this bailout bill. Both candidates support it, so in the next 4 years all someone has to do is say they have a hang nail and complain, and they'll probably get a bailout in the billions, or if they need some wooden arrows too, then that for sure will get billions and billions of dollars.

McCain is losing because of McCain...nobody else's fault.
His support is dropping from a lot of people now with his mouth over the last two weeks...(and lack of his mouth last night regarding the vote)
I am one of them, which I only supported his ticket because of Palin, and that took a lot for me to do to support voting for him.

Ifile out
October 2, 2008 - 12:53 ET by mrjeffIfill should file out! However, I think her remaining in could be a great positive...boosting Palin's tenacity even more. I think Palin will win, and cleanly. As an article we read today stated, in essence, we should 'let Palin be Palin' as when David was comfy with the tools he had (stones, sling) and NOT with Saul's armor. Let Sarah-cuda debate as Sarah!
Palin will win the Debate
October 2, 2008 - 13:13 ET by Lame CherryGov. Palin will win this debate pure and simple, but the media already have their Obama talking points they will be spinning for him word for word just like they did after McCain trounced Obama.
Ifill will not ask harder questions to Gov. Palin, but will smear her with questions preying on the Saturday Night Live scenario.
Look for key phrases in "WINDOW, EXPERIENCE, PAKISTAN, HEARTBEAT" couched in Ifill's questions.
The reason I'm outing Ifill here now as this is going to be getting back to her as they have lurkers on this site and it is only fitting they be outed now so they have to come up with a new game plan or be shown for the predictable stooges they are when it happens.
Biden has 2 problems, he looks like Hugh Hefner and Bill Maher, as lounge lizards sitting around in bars preying on women for sex.
He will smile, but everyone will see a penis on the prowl as that is what he was cocky walking around today in the news feed which makes me wonder if Ifill didn't slip him the questions already.
Problem 2, Biden is incapable of being nice. Let him talk and he will immediately become condescending, a jerk, a bully and a prick. The audience will pick up on this and if Gov. Palin is who I know she is, she is going to needle Biden three times and he will come up with then something about, "women like you".
So the press can say again, Biden lost but it doesn't matter as he won as nobody votes for Vice President any way, but it is vital only in the case of Sarah Palin as she is one heartbeat away.
See the press doesn't have to use Sarah Palin's words. The press is using Tina Fey's words just like they thought the West Wing was really the White House on television.
and yes significant will occur tonight in the nation will see Gov. Palin for the brilliant woman she is and end the voting public will deem her responsible and qualified for the White House.
God bless

Thanks for answering.
LK, C'mon. These questions
October 2, 2008 - 16:12 ET by HermanoLK, C'mon. These questions are unfair and you should never ask a liberal anything like this. These questions are appropriate:
How do you feel about 0bama?
Are you excited to find out what china pattern Michelle will choose when she is in the White House
Are you worried about global warming?
Can you name the capital of the United States? (yes or no, obviously)
Who is your favorite celebrity?
Do you believe the Earth is round or flat?
I checked with Gwen Ifill and she said these are acceptable questions to ask a liberal, so please amend your questions to Frank. After all, it is only fair.

October 2, 2008 - 16:18 ET by j. frank wilson1. I suspect this is a lie, but it really does not make any difference. As Ronald Reagan said, "They endorse me; I don't endorse them."
2. Lie.
3. If the government is going to spend money it needs to raise money. The only thing worse than Democratic tax and spend is Republican don't tax and spend. What was the Bush Admnistration's plan to pay for the Iraq War? Didn't have one. Remember the budget that John Kerry voted for before he voted against? President Bush promised to veto that spending bill. Why? Because it first included a mechanism to actually pay for it.
4. Made up non-story.
5. Made up non-story.
6. I happen to agree with a good deal of what Rev. Wright said. The fact is this gentleman preached 3 one-hour sermons per Sunday for, what, twenty years? Did you sit there and listen to him? Nope. But you're going to judge thousands of hours of sermons based on a 30-second (obviously out-of-context) soundbite? Then you are an idiot.
If you are seriously interested in this subject, and I doubt you are, listen to Terry Gross' Fresh Air show on Black Liberation Theology (and Rev. Wright's sermons). BTW: She had an excellent show today on Iran. Most interesting...
Frank ... you call yourself a liberal
October 2, 2008 - 16:37 ET by LionKingFirst and foremost, I aksed you what you liked about Obama and his policies, etc... re-read the original post that you ignored.
Question 1 was a why question which allowed you to speculate. This is not a lie, it has been widely reported if you care to do your due diligence.
Question 2 is not a lie. It is a matter of record in the Illinois State Senate.
Again, you on Question 3 you avoid answering the question. It has been proven that lower taxes actually increase tax revenue, so your more-taxes-for-more-spending answer doesn't wash.
Questions 4 and Question 5 are hardly made up ... Dan Rather is not the one reporting this. Since you are afraid of the truth, you go into denial mode.
Question 6, again, you fail to answer. Did you graduate from any school? I did not judge what Wright said, I asked why Obama claims he did not know this side of his mentor of 20 years.
All in all, Frank, you failed this quiz. I now know why you are voting for Obama ... it has nothing to do with anything logical.
BTW, feel free to try again.
LionKing:
October 2, 2008 - 17:03 ET by j. frank wilsonIt's been more than proven that lower taxes increase tax revenue? When was that? Do you diet by eating more?
Decreasing taxes may (emphasis may) increase productivity, but since it will be at best only a marginal increase it can't compensate for the lost tax revenue of the bulk (ie, existing base).
For example, let's give you the benefit of the doubt and surmise that a 10% cut in taxes increases productivity 10%. 90% (existing) productivity is not taxed at the old rate - and that can not make up for the additional (new) 10% (also, of course) taxed at the new rate.
However, since you have proof - my example doesn't mean much, does it?
LK...frank is just being his regular dumb self
October 2, 2008 - 18:11 ET by porpoiseboyfrank, i hear your mommy calling.
it HAS been proven that lower taxes increase revenue. you are of the incorrect ( as usual ) assumption that the only way to create wealth is to steal it from someone...typical lib. you see franky when people with money get more money, they invest it, they start and expand businesses which hire people who make money....it's capitalism franky...it works. that's why you shouldn't hate the working rich franky. nor covet their money. we all know you do nothing, produce nothing, and it is only natural that you would covet what you can never have as you would not be willing to work for it.
btw, which part of black liberation theology do you agree with?
and what part of the "sound bites" that have been aired about the rev have been taken out of context?
and you little obama puppet you....how do you suppose that those vitrolic statements made the rev ended up in chuch tapes available at the church store if they were not exemplary of what the rev spewed in general. are you saying trinity is deceptive as a church in the tapes they give to visitors to decide whether that church is for them? i believe i could make a better argument that since this material was mined from church produced videos of just a few hours and over 20yrs that the revs sermons would have amounted to hundreds of hours....well there is probably plenty of juicy stuff that has not been aired. pretty simple deduction that even a simpleton like you should understand.

Obama is an associate of terrorist Ayers.
I have provided sources compared to your, well, nothing.
Care to answer direct questions or do you still intend to dodge the very first question I asked about Obama and his policies?
Do you remember in the first debate where Obama said he wanted to pull the troops from Iraq and use them in other Al Qaeda hotspots? Doesn't this contradict his position about bringing the troops home? Do you think we can just send our troops to wherever Al Qaeda may have set up shop? Do you think the host country might object? You man is on top of it thought, right?
Frank, do you have the courage to answer the previous questions and these questions honestly? Can you cite legitimate sources?
I wait anxiously for your intellectual response. btw, to any other liberals that want to play, please feel free; I think Frank may need some help.

October 2, 2008 - 18:32 ET by Cool ArrowDo you diet by eating more?
Maybe you need more fiber.
And do you really think a 10% cut in taxes wouldn't have a positive effect on the jobs picture?
I'd buy more with a 10% tax cut. The money would remain in country longer as prices fall. Have you an understanding of how beneficial it is to have the same dollar recirculating rather than taking immediate flight to some overseas manufacturer?
I honestly can't think of a time when tax cuts didn't have a positive effect on the economy.
But I'm not the economist you are.

October 2, 2008 - 13:49 ET by TeamcheeserOf course Palin will win, but we all know the MSM does not keep score like the rest of us do. So even though she will have more substance, more style, and be more articulate and wipe the floor with Biden, the MSM will report it this way:
"Sarah Palin was overly aggressive with the elder statesman. I think it hurt her and McCain."
And, if I may, this whole business about Katie Couric and her insipid Supreme Court question... What a crock!
I am a lifetime Steelers fan, who as a kid used to sit next to Jo Jo Starbuck (Bradshaw's one-time wife) at the games. I used to know all of the players both on and off the field. If you were to ask me to name some of my favorite plays in Steelers lore, off the top of my head I would blurt out... what?
"The Immaculate Reception"
After that, I would really have to think about it. Oh yeah! The Hail Mary from the Colts' Harbaugh that fell to the carpet sending the Steelers to the Superbowl in '95. And... uh... Roethlisberger tackling that other Colt (Harper?) after the Bettis fumble on the goal line to send the Steelers to the Superbowl a couple years ago. And... uh... Jack Lambert dumping that Cryboy on his skull after he taunted our kicker (Gerella).
Despite the fact that I am a Steelers diehard and I know a lot about football, when you pin me down on an open-ended question like that, my mind will go to ""The Immaculate Reception" and not much else.
Roe v. Wade is Palin's "Immaculate Reception"
Couric is a Dolt.
Has the gravity of what we are about to witness sunk in yet?
October 2, 2008 - 13:54 ET by R D HelmWe are about to see two of the most extraordinary events in the history of this nation take place in living color.
1) We are going to see a bill concocted by a creepy liberal democrat (Paulson), that will essentially mean the official end to our free-enterprise system, signed into law by a republican president.
2) That unfortunate event will be followed shortly by the election of someone who is essentially a communist to the presidency of our nation.
