For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: will Democrats actually allow more drilling?
Senate Democrats promised a series of votes next week on offshore oil drilling as Republicans agreed Monday to let the Senate proceed on a defense bill that had been bottled up because of partisan disputes over the country's energy priorities. Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada said he is ready to take up two proposals that would allow limited oil and gas drilling 50 miles off Florida's Gulf coast and in the Atlantic off four southeastern states as well as a broader Republican drilling bill. "We are offering Republicans multiple opportunities to vote for increased drilling," declared Reid, addressing what has become the biggest energy issue in Congress as well as in the presidential campaign.
Will this happen, or is it just political chatter? If it does, will the bill have any teeth, and if so, what made the Democrats acquiesce?

Leave it to Dingy Harry to try to take credit, as if it were the Democrats, led by him, who have been pushing for more drilling all along.
Just like he tried to take credit for Rush's sale of the Senatorial letter condemning him (Rush) for the "phony soldiers" baloney.
He is just shameless.
PS No doubt the bills will be larded up with unaccptable junk, and conditions that make them useless, and he will claim that Democrats wanted to drill, but Republicans voted against their bills. Just in time for November.

Reid (libs) are also including their own priorities (such as repealing tax breaks for big oil). They can dance around the public forever with solutions to problems, yet never intending to resolve them.
Yesterday Reid scolded the GOP against a shutdown over drilling.

"Allow" - this goes to the dictatorial attitude of the Left.
"Limited" - this is just a ruse - they leave the limitss open; they could easily limit it to 0 barrels.
This is just more typical Democrat deception.

The Dems should be conditionally applauded for moving this legislation forward. But the devil is in the detail. As you said, MattM, if the drilling is too boxed in, it may effectively amount to not drilling (while they claim headlines for "allowing" a vote on drilling).

Tue, 09/09/2008 - 10:49 ET by CapitalismRulesOne of the most inspiring stories that you will never find in the media is the incredible and unshakable republican push for this very thing. Republicans in congress have put up such a remarkable fight, staying at all hours in house to get these do-nothing, stupid dems to do something that acutally adheres to the collective will of their constituencies and the american people in general- getting our own oil and getting it now. Reid and his ilk are beholden to the special interests, not you, not me, not your commute to work today. Reid cares nothing for you just his own reelection and this is probably more pandering to the people, nothing of substance will come of this thanks to his party.

Tue, 09/09/2008 - 10:59 ET by dscottBeware of Democrats and their compromises: Both proposals would rescind oil industry tax breaks and shift the money to spur energy efficiency and renewable energy programs such as those to provide wind and solar power.
In other words, the oil companies will be forced to divert investment money from full throttle drilling to a half hearted effort to waste money on unaffordable and unreliable wind and solar power alternatives. Remember to a Democrat, profits are evil and investment money for actually doing something comes from thin air. Who are those evil oil company shareholders profiting off drilling??? Oophs, that would be our 401Ks and IRAs which the Dems now also want to steal from, I mean tax.
Under this false choice offered by the Dems, no bill is better than what they offer, the issue will be settled by the public on Nov 4th.

Wed, 09/10/2008 - 12:33 ET by dscottArticle from Human Events Online that talks more about what the snotty Dems want to do in with their faux compromise: http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=28456
In a recent letter to Congress, the Institute for Energy Research detailed the problems with a bipartisan scheme called the New Energy Reform Act, or better known as the “Gang of 10” proposal. Their answer: reduce the amount of lands off limits in the OCS from 85% to about 78%....leaving about three-quarters of our lands still untouched. They then proceed to add new taxes and fees of all kinds to come up with $84 billion to spend on earmarks and pet projects and whatever the latest fad in energy proposals is. Nothing on ANWR. Nothing on oil shale. Nothing about the 10 billion barrels of oil right off the coast of California that their bill ignores. In the end, American consumers get little or no new energy supplies, but have to swallow a huge new set of taxes and mandates and limits on their liberties so politicians can say they are doing something about energy prices. It’s the same old Washington game, and the results will be the same….increased imports and prices for Americans. The best thing Congress could do at this point is nothing…if they pass nothing, the embargo of American supplies stops on October 1...

Tue, 09/09/2008 - 11:05 ET by bradbenj5952The Republicans need to capitalize on this in a big way because what is revealed in Harry's declaration is that the Dems are now taking credit for "offering Republicans multiple opportunities to vote for increased drilling." The Dems know that America is for energy independence in a BIG way and they can no longer hide behind the MSM. The right is on the attack regarding the MSM and America is cheering the effort. I think the Dems see their veil being obliterated before their eyes and their ability to hide behind it severely crippled. Now they have to do what they have always done, change their stripes and colors and try to make it look like it was their idea all along. Just like they've been able to hoodwink minorities in this country into thinking that they're the ones who have supported them in their quest for equality and freedom (those who know American history know just the opposite is true), they will try to take credit for this as well.

Then, and this contradiction was in ONE paragraph, apparently despite the fact that Alaska has no state sales tax, nor income tax, and residents get $2000 back each year in taxes (plus an additional $1200 this year), they allegedly have the highest tax burden in the US (per capita). They also talk about how 89% of the state's revenue is from oil.

(h/t AllAccess.com, registration required, go to "Net News") David Birke, described as a Democrat activist by the Glendale News Press, is suing the station, Edwin Atsinger III (owner of parent company Salem Communications), and hosts Laura Ingraham, Dennis Prager, Michael Medved, Hugh
Hewitt, Dennis Miller, Mike Gallagher and Kevin James. The last paragraph of the article states:
The complaint alleges that the radio station has never
allowed a Democrat to host a show; uses call screening to “suppress”
calls from Democratic supporters; and violates “campaign finance laws
by providing free media for advertising, attacks on Democrats,
fundraising, and promotion exclusively to GOP officials and candidates.”
The Democrats seem determined to shut down conservative talk radio any way they can. I should make clear that I have no idea if the party or any related organization is behind this suit, but it sure seems fishy.
Since it's California, this suit may not be laughed off by the courts in spite of its frivolousness.

Hmm, seems to me like they ARE serving the public interest. The less we have to put up with liberal democratic nonsense, the better we'll all be.
Clearly they have never actually listened to these shows, because they have democrat supporters on quite a bit. Laura Ingrahm just had(Friday I think) someone on from the Obama campaign who was basically saying Sarah Palin should stay at home pregnant and barefoot instead of running for VP.

Some scientists are even in court trying to stop it. There are also some scientists sending the other scientists involved in this experiment death threats.
I always thought, that it wouldn't be the politicians and generals that would cause mans demise, but a bunch of allergy-prone, guys with nasally voices, and pasty skin, wearing pocket protecters and high-water slacks.
Fairly disturbing, if your a flat-earther like me. : )

Tue, 09/09/2008 - 17:16 ET by Hero SquadMcCain and Palin were just in my town about an hour ago. They spoke about 6 blocks from my office. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get out and watch the festivities. I was hoping to snag a bumper sticker or button, but it was not meant to be. Tickets went fast, and I realized too late there were tickets to be had.
But I did catch a glimpse of the McCain Plane at the airport while driving home this afternoon!
They really should re-christen it The Barracuda, though.

The Dem energy bill will be PHONY
Tue, 09/09/2008 - 20:19 ET by usbeefMark Levin warned about this phony bill right after the marxists left the house on vacation. He said the only way we will be aloud to drill is if the oil workers have to put propellers on their heads and stand on one leg while drilling.
The bill will be so bloated with garbage the republicans will have to vote against it. Then the marxists can say "See, we offered them a bill to vote on to drill for more oil and they voted it down." They are planning to use this bill as propaganda. This may fool some people but they know damn well it's not going to fool people with intelligence in this country. You cannot compromise with these libs, they have a marxist agenda and lower fuel prices will hurt that agenda. As long as there is at least one democrat seat in the house, that is a sign of corruption.

Fact? Hardly!

There's a whole thread on it, bal.
Why don't you for once admit your being a little twit by posting stuff like that....no one here buys it, at all. And it's gotten to be really bloody boring.
FACT: Best known joke in the country in the last week was told by Sarah Palin. The difference between a pitbull and a Soccer Mom? (pointing to her face) "Lipstick".
FACT: Obama makes the lipstick on the pig remark, in addition to the horribly mysoginistic (h/t Blazer) smelly fish remark today, while smirking like I imagine you do. Crowd goes nuts.
INFERENCE: Obama couldn't resist the obvious "play on words"....which failed miserably. Now he's in the deep smelly stuff.

Tue, 09/09/2008 - 22:55 ET by balboaYeah, not being a "twit." I think you're simply trying too hard to find something to be mad at Obama about. Can't you go back to using his middle name all the time? That was a lot more fun.

I'm not mad at Obama.....I'd kiss him for pushing the panic button and the self-destruct button at the same time.

Speaking of twits, I wonder what Mika will have to say about this tomorrow, hmmmmm.

Tue, 09/09/2008 - 23:09 ET by BarabbusOh but you're so wrong! This is so much more fun than using his middle name! I admit watching his whole sham of a campaign imploding is both revolting and facinating at the same time. Like watching a toilet overflowing. You don't want to watch, but you find yourself staring in disbelief. I think ole B. Hussien is feeling the heat. Like a PIG's ass at a TEXAS barbecue. Oh no!! Did I just call him a pig??

Wed, 09/10/2008 - 09:02 ET by dscottAhem, Bal, are you saying a person doesn't have the right to be offended by something they deem as derogatory? Hasn't it been the liberal line that only the person to whom the remark is directed can determine if that remark was offensive????? Isn't the standard of interpretation the sole province of the object of the action? E.g. only a black person can determine if they have been racially maligned by something a white person says. Only a woman can determine if they have been subjected to sexism by a male.
Basically what you are saying Bal, maybe you didn't mean to but...if a person calls you a name or uses some off handed remark toward yourself, that person who did so gets to determine if it was offensive or not. Isn't that really what Obama is trying to do? He gets to make offensive remarks and then says, "oh, it wasn't offensive." Seems rather a double standard don't you think? Or do the standards of offense strictly depend upon one's political views?
