Weekend Sports Open Thread

  • Bookmark and Share

First, a disclaimer: the weekend sports open threads were postponed during the Olympics to prevent folks from giving results on events that hadn't yet aired in the various time zones. Last weekend was an "Oops," as between the DNC, Gustav, and Palin, well, I just forgot. :-)

For this weekend, I can't find any REALLY exciting matchups in college football. Am I wrong?

On to tennis, this year's Wimbledon final might have been the greatest in history. Will we see something similar at Flushing Meadows this weekend? If Nadal wins, thereby becoming only the fourth man to win three Grand Slam events in the same year, will he have officially taken the thrown away from Federer? Are folks surprised at how well this young man has transformed his clay court expertise into hardcourt prowess? (BTW: I am!!!)

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL? What's the game of the week?

Anything else?

Have fun at the game....I hope your team has a smashingly successful day!

Texans Vs Steelers is the game of the week in my house.  As the Texans make their annual lemming like drive to the play-offs, in the toughest division in Pro Football.

Regardless of what anyone thinks, someone has to come in last.  I would like to see the Texans finish above .500 though, even if it's only by one game.

Amen to that... Football in

Amen to that... Football in Houston is where it's at. Though, I'll admit I'm more of an Astros fan.

Sports

The Paralympics opens today in Bejiing, in the olympic stadiums used a couple of weeks ago.  These athletes are unbelievable, and have overcome multiple obstacles.  They have times and abilities that rival typical olympic athletes.  I have a son who competed in wheelchair racing, and one of his friends is in Bejiing.  But we probably won't be able to see it, they don't put it on TV.

Momo

Thanks for the info, I didn't know that.

Any chance they're streaming on the net?  That would be sweet.

Thanks, NS!

Naturally, I think Florida vs. Miami is the big deal today....and imagine my delight when I turned on Game Day....and it was from Gainesville (I had a house right across from the stadium when I was there...what mischief on game day!).

For my beloved Gators, we have some priorities:

(1)  The State of Florida Championship (beat the Noles & all others from Florida).

(2)  The SEC East

(3)  The SEC Championship

(4)  The National Championship

So, today is a very important day...and as we know, every journey begins with the first step.

NS, I'm still a Federer fan, but Rafa is the real deal...I am loving this rivalry, it is great for the sport.  I think it's a bit easier for a clay courter (particularly with his talents) to make the change to the faster surfaces, rather than vice versa.  Time will tell about Rafa....but I wish the young man all of the success in the world.  He's a great champion already, and a fine gentleman, too.  In other words, a great ambassador for the sport of tennis.

Finally, you can't spell "scum" without UM.  GO GATORS!

Gators

National Championship? Not this year.

As far as your Miami comment goes, shove it up your ***.

Your two NC's are cute, though.

PALIN/McCain 2008

ROCK

Like I said...you can't spell scum without UM.

As you have so genteely proven.

How do you like playing in a real conference?

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Hag

The pot calling the kettle black, eh? Why don't you enjoy a fresh cup?

Still, those two NC's are cute.

PALIN/McCain 2008

Charming, ROCK

Such sportsmanship.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Poor thing!

You start off by calling the opposing team's school 'scum' and get your panties in a wad when the smart-mouthed comment is returned in kind.

I can't imagine how Gator fans got the reputation of being so obnoxious.

Dawgs will own you again.

PALIN/McCain 2008

Who's got his panties in a wad?

Riiighttt...that would be you.

First you curse at me, then you name call.

As I said, charming.

Oops, a little over-reaction there, Rock.  If we'd been playing FSU, I'd have mentioned Free Shoes University.

For such a big man, you can dish it out, but you surely can't take it.

Ta Ta.

Obnoxious Hag

Don't start a fight if you can't take the heat, airwhea.

Like I said, your two NC's are cute.. I mean 'charming'.

as if either of you 2 have anything to do with the outcome...

Geez. I'll never understand why or how anyone can be so over the top when it comes to supporting a sports team. People take this stuff WAY too personally. It's a game! It's not like we the fans have any input in the final outcome. Get over yourselves! I've had season tickets for the NFL Chargers for over 20 years and have seen them go from 2 - 14 all the way to 14 - 2. I cheered them when they sucked and I cheered them when they won. Did I have anything to do with any of it? Absolutely NOT. It's admirable (and human nature) for people to support their teams, whether they be college, pro, or whatever, BUT, to demean somebody just because they went to a different school or support somebody else is STOOPID (IMHO). Cheer your team all you want, but, don't get in someone's face and call them out as if YOU have ANYthing to do with the outcome. It's not supposed to be personal! If I call your team a bunch of duds, well then, I'm saying it about the TEAM! It ain't personal. By the same token, you can call my team whatever you want, but, don't call me a dud just because I root for the other team. Sports ain't politics! The world isn't gonna go to hell just because one team beats another.

I could go on and on, but, I have to go. Sorry for the rant... I feel better now.

Sorry Rock, but, telling Blonde to shove it is above and beyond. Be a better fan/sportsman than that...  Don't make it personal........

I agree with you

I agree with you completely!!!

This is sports for crying out loud!! I love 'Bama (24th to 13th, yeah!) but I won't trash any other team supporter! Come on, it's sport! We all support and root for our favorite team, no need for nastiness. Well, unless it's Alabama vs. Auburn, LOL! College football rocks! Lets have fun. Roll Tide!!! BTW, Blonde, I like Florida, except when they play the Tide, I like the Bulldogs too, they are awesome this year. In other words... I LOVE the SEC!!!

"Nuke 'em 'til they... oh hell, just shoot 'em!"

Hello, ROCK....are you having fun yet?

Hope you enjoyed that little encounter with my GATORS.  You may name call, all you'd like.....it doesn't change the score.

National Championships are very nice....thank you very much.

Hmmm....Gators have three in 2006-07.

How many are you wearing these days, ROCK?

Care to shoot another nasty name my way, there, fella?

Ta ta.

Florida / Miami is the

Florida / Miami is the premier matchup today. Florida hasn't beaten the 'Canes since 1985! Hard to believe.

I'm really impressed with Nadal's conversion to an all-surface player. Usually guys like him stay clay court specialists. I've seen some great tennis in the U.S. Open this year, and another tremendous collapse by Andy Roddick.

"Florida / Miami is the

"Florida / Miami is the premier matchup today. Florida hasn't beaten the 'Canes since 1985! Hard to believe."

That is hard to believe. I don't see the streak continuing past today.

Nope

You are correct. Not this year.

Miami doesn't have the talent of years past. I am interested to see how the o-line does - they're 307-354lbs each. Maybe there's a running game?

The Game of the Week Is Palin vs the world

I really do not bother with college football as I just watch whatever ABC has on in enjoying the teams play.
The game is all that matters.

For pro, Aaron Rogers will find out he is not Farve as he meets the Minnesota Defense. Tavaris Jackson will also make his debut to become a QB or become Gus Ferrote's back up.

Daunte Culpepper is allot like Barack Obama just sending out emails hoping someone shows up at his gathering who will listen to him.
I laughed on CBS their showing the white shirted one in Obama being boring to a pathetic few weak voices "ya'ing" the nothing he was saying.
Sarah Palin's crowds were glowing and cheering.

So Gov. Palin is the game of the week.

The biggest loosers this season will be the New England Patriots with surprises in Miami, the Jags disappointing as they are dinged on wide receiver and San Diego making a good run.

NASCAR...

Rain delay. Uncool.

"9 out of 10 doctors agree that flag burning is the number one killer of liberals."

The latest is they will

The latest is they will race on Sunday. Uncool yes. I haven't even turned on the TV today, all I know is the race will be tomorrow! Johnson is on a roll. I still hope for Gordon (boo, hissss!). Should be fun! You go Heavy!!

"Nuke 'em 'til they... oh hell, just shoot 'em!"

Rukus...

nearly fell out of my chair last week when JJ flew across the line it was a wonderful...no glorious day and I too hope the force stays with the Bowtie boys come Sunday!

"9 out of 10 doctors agree that flag burning is the number one killer of liberals."

I hope that's good...

We whooped Rutgers and just waiting for the SEC schedule, it will be tough when we get SEC schedule going. Arkansas first game in the SEC, not easy ! We'll see...

"Nuke 'em 'til they... oh hell, just shoot 'em!"

Not Rain

Not a rain delay. Tropical Storm Hanna started up the coast, so Friday they just shut the place down, and said we'll have dual-races on Sunday.

CUP | 1 p.m. ET Sun. | ESPN
NNS | 7 p.m. ET Sun. | ESPN2

I wonder how they will handle the tickets? Let the Cup people in for the first race, clear the stands, then let in the Grand National folks? I can't see how they can do it any other way.

I have had my nap so I feel

I have had my nap so I feel a little better. Still have about 8 hours of sleep to make up.

I saw a stat this morning that was rather interesting. There are no ranked teams matching up against one another this weekend. First time this has happened in 7 years.

I really look for FL to run all over UM. Sorry Blonde it might be the preiemer match up of today but I believe it will be a crummy game to watch for an someone who doesn't have a dog in this hunt.

The best game just might be in Greenville-WVa and ECU. ECU is hungry for this win.

I have to agree with Lame. Arron Rogers is no Farve. I look for the Vikings to have their way with the Pack.

If Wake can beat Ole Miss today they will be the only ACC team this season to have 2 wins over teams from BCS conferences.

If pro is the opposite of con what is the opposite of progress? Congress!

Wake will win.Their QB

Wake will win.Their QB completes 75% of his passes and the defense is as strong, if not stronger, than last year. Of course, it helps that Wake is now a football school.

OK - wow! Ol' Miss almost

OK - wow! Ol' Miss almost did it. Thank goodness for Sam Swank with a 41 yard FG with 3 sec left. I officially resign from predicting who will win Wake games!

Don't Look Now, But...

The Boston Red Sox have been sneakily climbing back into contention in the American League East. They are now only 2 games back of Tampa Bay in the lost column.

Tampa Bay Loses Again

The Devil Rays give up a grand slam with 2 outs in the bottom of the 13th inning. Toronto wins again!

There is no football

No football allowed until after October when (God willing because it's gonna take a miracle,) the Cubs are winners of the World Series.  Then it only gets a month of my attention because the college wrestling season starts and the Iowa Hawkeyes are set to defend their National Title.  No football!  Do you hear me!?  No football!  None!  Ha!  Ha-ha-ha-ha!

Thank you! TheTide winning! Roll Tide! Second year of Saben.Gators are awesome, as are the Dawgs! The SEC rules!!!

Man, does the Big East suck

Man, does the Big East suck this year, or what?

WVU got spanked, Pitt barely beat one of the worst teams in the country, Akron spanked crappy Syracuse, and UConn stumbled past Temple. in overtime....

Sigh.

Bring on the NFL!!!

Well now that VT and BC are

Well now that VT and BC are in the ACC, 'round here we call it the "Big Least".

Go Favre.

Still can't believe he's on my team.

Obama... a total fraud. Palin... a total hottie.

ECU

I told you yesterday to watch ECU. Ever since spring ball I have had to listen to their hype by the local papers, TV and radio. Once fall practice got underway it was a daily stream of their propaganda coming from Greenville. I said same story different season. I have heard this for the 13 years I have lived here. The win over Va Tech made me pay attention. The win yesterday over WVa yesterday got me to thinking-maybe this was not the same BS coming from the Pirates that I have had to endure over the years. Don't take me wrong. I was TARHEEL BORN AND A TARHEEL BRED AND WHEN I DIE I'LL BE TARHEEL DEAD. I'll never change my allegence but they may bare watching the rest of the year. Pierre Bell, LB #34, is from Vanceboro. I watched him play ever since he was in middle school. ( My daughter and him where the same age.)

To Hermano, a few bars. OH HERE'S TO WAKE FOREST. The Deac are the best team in the ACC so far.

If pro is the opposite of con what is the opposite of progress? Congress!

Big test in two weeks. We

Big test in two weeks. We head off to Tallahassee to take on FSU. Last trip was memorable - a 30 point win and the first time in Bowden history they Noles had been shut out at home. Looking for a repeat! BTW - glad you made it through the storm safely.
