ST. PAUL, Minn. -- On Tuesday, NewsBusters caught up with Oscar-winning actor Jon Voight who's appearing in the about to be released comedy "An American Carol."
Amongst other things, he told us:
There are conservatives, quite a lot of them in Hollywood, but they're quiet.
After we asked him why Hollywood, which used to be filled with a lot of conservatives decades ago changed, he responded (video embedded right):
I don't know. We lost our way a little bit. You know, all those guys from the other generation, they were all in the service. You know, Humphrey Bogart flew many missions, Clark Gable. All the great guys, Jimmy Stewart. And then something happened along the way.
When prompted to explain why, he responded:
One of the things is we had Cold War propaganda that was very active in this country, and when it came to the '60s, they took over. The reason why we lost the Vietnam, so we never lost the Vietnam War, guys. We were prevented from continuing the action. We never lost a major battle.
Astonishing talk from a Hollywoodan, wouldn't you agree? But there was more, because next Voight told us that he used to be like the folks in the streets protesting today, and that the same people who were leading and involved in such rallies in the '60s and '70s:
are now teaching our children. Bill Ayers is a very good example. We've got people who are programming our kids to think that capitalism is evil. America is imperialistic. My God, we've got to get together and stop this. This is a real plague, and it's criminal.

John Voight. Hollywood
September 4, 2008 - 14:13 ET by bassndudeJohn Voight. Hollywood could learn alot from him. Class mostly.
Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!
Looks like Voight could have done 20 minutes more
September 4, 2008 - 14:54 ET by Gary HallNow, I don't really think so, but I'm often confused with John Voight around here.. and then again, I've been told I look like Jimmy Carter - life is a twist, is it not? OK, Valerie Perrine grabed me at the cucumber section in the produce department (had quite the openning line, I might add).. I think she thought I was Chuck Norris (when I had a beard - OK, a little bit) but, that was before I got married 18 years ago. Other than all that Hollywood is not much fun.
Anyway, once Mr. Voight figured out who Noel was (that was cute) .. this could have ended up with all of you sitting down having a drink and a full feature-length interview. Indeed a "national treasure, he is." Job well done, Matthew, Noel and Mr. Camera Person (who is getting it down as the days go on here) Thanks. (;~> gary

Good old Hollywood is
September 4, 2008 - 15:48 ET by Susan IGood old Hollywood is gone. And it shows in their arrogant attitude, liberal views and the films they produce.
They wander why film viewship is down? Maybe they should ask middle America. We don't want to see the crap they believe in, and horrible views of our country on the big screen.
For some reason, they are pandering to other countries. I wish they would all move there!
Appreciating Jon Voight
September 4, 2008 - 16:53 ET by Lame CherryI really love Jon Voight as he has spoken out against Hollywood when his career can be ruined and while other GOP types were only around when Reagan was popular but now are silent.
Robert Duvall told Spielberg to go to hell literally as he didn't care about Hollywood and didn't want to work for them again.
That is what makes Mr. Voight rare in noting the mistakes and standing alone. I would suggest that all of Mr. Voight's work be seen in people buying the tickets to movies as his work is always worth the price. He needs to be supported and in forums like this needs people to tell him he is appreciated.
He didn't have to do this no more than John McCain needed to do this no more than Sarah Palin needs the grief she is getting.
Americans need to stand up and support, pray and assist in any way they can for the good of some of America's best.
It is wonderful to have someone's work like Jon Voight to be savored now knowing the real character which beats within his heart.
God bless Mr. Voight.

September 4, 2008 - 18:35 ET by acumenHey guys, I know you are real busy at the convention but could you do me a favor?
A couple of guys I know have this big disagreement. If you get a chance to talk to Mr. Voight again could you ask him if he used to own a 1989 LeBaron convertable?
