ST. PAUL, Minn.-- Defending his colleagues in the media with their "hard vet" of Gov. Sarah Palin, Fox News Channel's Mort Kondracke told NewsBusters that Republicans should have expected the intense media scrutiny of Palin, a selection he said was "Dan Quayle all over again."
NEWSBUSTERS: Do you feel that the media are vetting Sarah Palin to an extent that they didn't vet Obama in his 19 months of running for office?
MORT KONDRACKE, co-host "Beltway Boys": Well, I mean, look, they had all those 19 months to go through Jeremiah Wright. They had to discover Jeremiah Wright. This is all very, very scrunched. She's a brand-new figure on the scene, she's getting a hard vet, there's no question about it, but that's what happens if you spring somebody, this is Dan Quayle all over again.

Mort, how is that objective?
September 2, 2008 - 21:31 ET by dodecahedronSo far Governor Palin is proving herself the perfect candidate. The media is attacking in full force and has only been able to come up with personal attacks on her family along with rumors and baseless allegations.
It already appears as though Governor Palin was perfectly vetted by Senator McCain.
What happened, Mort???
September 2, 2008 - 21:37 ET by AZTech2020I actually thought that Mort Kondracke showed quite a few signs of intelligence (at least for a Democrat!) and I thought he was a pretty fair analyst, even when he was of the opposite viewpoint. This segment of his commentary pretty much undoes and disproves those thoughts. Perhaps he'll have second thoughts and come back to reality. Let's hope so anyway.
I think what he was
September 2, 2008 - 21:55 ET by MidAmericaI think what he was saying was that this process is similar to what the media did to Quayle not necessarily that he was equating Palin to Quayle. He seemed mostly to be defensive of the media. His blind spot is that he doesn't want to see that this 'hard vet' wouldn't have happened to a democrat pick.
If Palin had obama's 'issues' she would be out of the race already. For two reasons..... (1) the media would be screaming incessantly (2) the Republicans would never accept someone with obama's background (not his racial background, his life choices)
I'm pretty sure Kondracke was touting Palin a few weeks ago
September 2, 2008 - 21:59 ET by trak65I wonder if "Dan Quayle all over again" means that Mor-ton -- whom I consider a center-right Repub, not a Dem -- now sees Palin as a bad choice, or, alternatively, whether he means that a relatively unknown candidate brings an inevitable initial glut of rumors, speculation and negative (but not deal-breaking) facts. Palin is the first relative unknown since Quayle.
Quayle may not have been a big asset, but he didn't sink the 1988 ticket. Of course there was innuendo about womanizing and draft-avoidance, but his biggest liability was probably his debate performance. The "failure to vet" criticisms will melt away if Palin does well in debating Biden.
Morton Kondrake and Fred Barnes - the Beltway Nerds
September 2, 2008 - 22:05 ET by jefflebowskiThe only thing I can focus on whenever I watch those two on Fox news is, "Man, those dudes are not funky."
Other than that, I never can concentrate on what points they are trying to make.

another liberal misunderstanding
September 2, 2008 - 22:08 ET by Lame CherryKondracke is like all 6 figure pundits in not understanding the subject.
Dan Quayle had one problem and it was those James Baker type patricians trying to sink a Reagan Conservative. The same misguided souls who trashed Reagan thinking it would build up Bush 41.
None of that is going on with Sarah Palin and Gov. Palin has such a titanic wave of support which Mr. Quayle never had at this point.
I would hope though Gov. Palin is another just like Dan Quayle as he was right on everything he spoke from Murphy Brown, Queen's English tomatoe and on his field of foreign policy.
Would think Mort owes me at least owes me a steak dinner for doing his job for him here.

I don't know if he deserves
September 2, 2008 - 22:18 ET by motherbeltI don't know if he deserves it, but I'm giving Mort the benefit of the doubt here. I think what he meant was that Dan Quayle was a late pick and a surprise, like Palin, and therefore the media didn't have a lot of information on him.
But I could be wrong.

Mort doesn't get it...Dan Quayle was a lightweight unknown MALE. Bush Sr. could have chosen a handful of any men who were guys. The fact that Gov. Palin's resume is not deep isn't the beauty of the choice, but the great amount of experience by a female, Washington outsider was able to amass in her 44 years is! Mort is just p!ssed that it WASN'T an insider.
Who knows - this may spin off a new Fox show: The Outside-the-Beltway Girls?!?

September 3, 2008 - 07:12 ET by DingbatThis week I have written Fox everyday re Mort. I suggested that they replace Mort with someone balanced, like Lanny Davis, Carville, etc. Maybe iof Britt gets enough emails, they'll pull this fool and he can get a gig with Olberman. Juan is a perfect example of someone that is balanced.
