But shortening the convention like you said might be a very good idea, since the outcome is already known and there are AFAIK no platform issues. Republicans would look serious and ready to get to work if they ended it early, while at the same time giving the news media less of a target. McCain should have thought about suspending his birthday bash in 2005 when Katrina was battering Louisiana. Instead he and W. had a wild time in Arizona gulping down tasty birthday cake while American citizens were drowning in New Orleans - Kudos to Michael Moore for making note of this on Countdown with Keith Olbermann. The Repubs can go ahead and suspend their convention but the American public wont buy it, they know this is all theater. Everybody knows the GOP couldn't care less about those people down there. They'll have to do way more than suspend a flimsy party convention to convince anybody.

I'm from NYC, AAD, and you need to understand that these corporations -- from CNN to MSNC to the nightly news shows -- I will bet have not ONE conservative hired fulltime behind the scenes. Yes, they have their Republican guests and a host here and their, but I mean in the offices, running the programming. a.a.d., it wasn't the Republicans who failed the people in New Orleans, it was the failings of the liberal entitlement system, that kept the generations of people there victims with no accountability or responsibilty and beholden and dependant to a failed Democratic system.

The Republicans are largely responsible for the erosion in confidence in Congress. The Republicans in Congress were exceedingly corrupt and thats why the electorate gave them the boot; as unpopular as Congress is today, The Dems are set to increase their majorities in both houses because the public just cannot trust the Repubs. The Republicans destroyed the credibility of Congress acting as a rubber-stamp to Bush when they were in control. The Democrats are trying to restore the institution's integrity but it will never happen unless we have a Democrat in the White House. That's why we must all do our part to make sure that Obama is elected as the next President of the United States.

Gas was like $ 2.10 a gallon when the Democrats took over Congress in Nov. 06'. In those two yrs. the price of a gallon of gas has increased by over 100%, to $ 4.14 a gallon, over two dollars !, but in the twelve yrs. of a Republican controlled Congress a gallon of gas only went up by 75 cents.

Last time I checked there were more Democrats in America than Republicans and this has always been the case for decades. Even better (for me) or worse (from your perspective) more and more Americans have been registering as Democrats over recent years. Republicans generally only win elections when Democrats cross over and vote for them. Reagan would not have been possible if wasn't for those Reagan Democrats. Whether you like it or not this is a Democratic Nation and the Dems can really fix your business if they only unite and put their minds to it. The most populous states in the union are Democratic. Although Republicans have won 7 of the last 10 elections (with the help of cross over Democrats) Democrats have always outnumbered Republicans even throughout the Reagan years. As a testimony to this, Congress have remained under Democratic control for almost half a century before it was eventually overthrown by the Republicans in 94 and then regained by the Democrats in 2006. No Republican President since Teddy Rossevelt has ever served with their party in control of both houses of Congress for the duration of their Presidency but every Democratic President has had that opportunity except Bill Clinton. Bush almost accomplished this for the Republicans finally but the Democrats spoiled his business in 06 when they took back the Senate and the House from the corrupt Republicans.
The Democratic base is bigger than the Republicans but the Repubs were generally better at turning out their voters in the past that's why they have been winning elections. Not so this year as Democrats are energized like never before. If Democrats turn out and vote like they have been in the primaries, the Republicans are TOAST.

ugh. People knew of Katrina for 4 days in advance. Many "big easy" residents made a choice to ignore the calls for evacuation and they paid the price. Yet blame Washington DC for their failing to evacuate? (I will not mention the conspiracy theories that Bush secrectly blew up the levies or "George Bush hates black people")
Big government and Liberalism are like addictive drug use. The more you have it, the more you rely on it and the less it delivers. If you dont engage in self destructive behaviors like ignoring evacuations calls, you are far less likely to be in the sad position of blaming others for your own failings.
Was FEMA perfect? No. Was it even a good job? no. Do you believe the Government is the best solution to much of anything? I dont.

I don't mind you asking at all. I lived most of my life in Fairhope, AL. For the last 8 years I have been in Ocean Springs, MS. Pretty close to the beach but not too close. Yeah, the calm is unsettling.

Also, try to freeze a bunch of H2O or better yet those square juice cartons, so the cold in your fridge lasts longer once the power goes. I find Minute Maid brand orange juice works particularly well.

The only silver in this cloud's lining, though, is that people are finally really prepared for these weather events. Businesses, individual families, and municipalities all have well-laid out plans, including appropriate infrastructure improvements and supplies.
The RNC needs to go ahead with the convention, with President Bush attending via satellite. Keep the storm front and center, with each speaker mentioning it, and urging his/her own constituents to volunteer or contribute to the recovery efforts. Show those idiots that we do more than pay lip service to "caring".

I agree Blonde, they need to go ahead with the convention, no doubt "Gustav" is a scary storm, I heard it could go Cat 5 sometime today and then back to a strong Cat 4 before landfall. This baby looks like it will be worse than "Katrina", but Hannah is slated to develop into a hurricane in the next few days and the models say it could hit the east coast of Florida or sweep up through the Carolinas and up into my neck of the woods.

Hi Cool. Camille hit Biloxi dead on in 1969. Very small, compact Cat 5 storm with winds up to 200mph. Nasty, nasty storm. Katrina was a Cat 5 just off the coast but dropped to a Cat 3 at landfall. Katrina was bad because she was huge and moved very slowly, hense all the damage... and we got it worse here on the MS coast than NO did, but you wouldn't know by the news coverage. Still, I felt really bad for the folks in LA, lots of praying. There is a boat in Biloxi that washed up during Camille that was made into a giftshop/museum, named the SS Camille. After Katrina the entire area was wiped clean, except for the boat, not touched, little damage, professional courtesy I guess. I am with you on living in a bowl, not a good choice, Mother Nature wins every time!

I just watched Gov. Jidal give a very complete and intelligent summary of the Gustav thing. He mentioned that three critical care patients had died during transport. I can see the headlines now: "Hospital Patients Die, Bush has no response" or "Bush Incompetence Again? Deaths Mount!" I really wish it would have been within bounds for the President, at some point, to say to the Daily Kos crowd and congressional nitwits "Get f...ed". Sorry, but Gustav has brought back a lot of memories of how this decent man has been treated.
Things certainly do seem to go better when the governor of the state facing the storm says "Yes" to the offer of federal support instead of "No" and that same governor actually knows what they are doing. Mary Loser had no clue....
I live in South Florida and Jeb Bush came on TV for each one giving us the same story.... where supplies would be located for after the storm, shelter locations, please get out now AND at such-and-such time, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN until the storm is over. This time, the local people seemed to find a good use for a bus.

Democrats outnumber Republicans

Even better (for me) or worse (from your perspective) more and more Americans have been registering as Democrats over recent years. Republicans generally only win elections when Democrats cross over and vote for them. Reagan would not have been possible if wasn't for those Reagan Democrats. Whether you like it or not this is a Democratic Nation and the Dems can really fix your business if they only unite and put their minds to it. The most populous states in the union are Democratic. Although Republicans have won 7 of the last 10 elections (with the help of cross over Democrats) Democrats have always outnumbered Republicans even throughout the Reagan years. As a testimony to this, Congress have remained under Democratic control for almost half a century before it was eventually overthrown by the Republicans in 94 and then regained by the Democrats in 2006. No Republican President since Teddy Rossevelt has ever served with their party in control of both houses of Congress for the duration of their Presidency but every Democratic President has had that opportunity except Bill Clinton. Bush almost accomplished this for the Republicans finally but the Democrats spoiled his business in 06 when they took back the Senate and the House from the corrupt Republicans.
The Democratic base is bigger than the Republicans but the Repubs were generally better at turning out their voters in the past that's why they have been winning elections. Not so this year as Democrats are energized like never before. If Democrats turn out and vote like they have been in the primaries, the Republicans are TOAST.

If you want the truth, then read this letter. For complete details, I refer you to my forthcoming book on the subject. For instance, in the Old Testament, the Book of Kings relates how the priests of Baal were slain for deceiving the people. I'm not suggesting that there be any contemporary parallel involving Mr. All American Dude, but if Fate desired that Mr. Dude make a correct application of what he had read about terrorism it would have to indicate title and page number since the improvident utopian would otherwise never in all his life find the correct place. But since Fate does not do this, Mr. Dude claims that skin color means more than skill and gender is more impressive than genius. Big government and Liberalism are like addictive drug use. The more you have it, the more you rely on it and the less it delivers. If you dont engage in self destructive behaviors like ignoring evacuations calls, you are far less likely to be in the sad position of blaming others for your own failings.
Was FEMA perfect? No. Was it even a good job? no. Do you believe the Government is the best solution to much of anything? I dont.
Remember how Wal Mart was in there with trailers way before FEMA? Cat3 / Cat4...Maximum sustained winds of 155 mph. It's a really, really big storm, and moving fast (I'm over 400 miles from the center of the storm, and we're getting nasty little outlying storm bands, and have been since yesterday morning.
The only silver in this cloud's lining, though, is that people are finally really prepared for these weather events. Businesses, individual families, and municipalities all have well-laid out plans, including appropriate infrastructure improvements and supplies.
The RNC needs to go ahead with the convention, with President Bush attending via satellite. Keep the storm front and center, with each speaker mentioning it, and urging his/her own constituents to volunteer or contribute to the recovery efforts. Show those idiots that we do more than pay lip service to "caring".
And a shout out to danbo and the rest of my fellow NB's up that way, I'm thinking of you, if you need anything, let me know.

Katrina was a Cat 5 just off the coast but dropped to a Cat 3 at landfall. Katrina was bad because she was huge and moved very slowly, hense all the damage... and we got it worse here on the MS coast than NO did, but you wouldn't know by the news coverage. Still, I felt really bad for the folks in LA, lots of praying. There is a boat in Biloxi that washed up during Camille that was made into a giftshop/museum, named the SS Camille. After Katrina the entire area was wiped clean, except for the boat, not touched, little damage, professional courtesy I guess. I am with you on living in a bowl, not a good choice, Mother Nature wins every time!

I live in South Florida and Jeb Bush came on TV for each one giving us the same story.... where supplies would be located for after the storm, shelter locations, please get out now AND at such-and-such time, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN until the storm is over. This time, the local people seemed to find a good use for a bus.
