"Naive how dare you not bow in sequence before your lord and master! Sire what shall we do with this infidels!" Obama in his infinite wisdom thinks for a while and with his charismatic smile and a wave of his gentle hand yells... "Off with their heads!"

August 28, 2008 - 18:49 ET by j. frank wilsontonight there are a great many very disappointed NB commentators.
For the past week or so I've read all the conspiracy theories, how Sen. Clinton was going to trash the convention or take it over in a coup, how she couldn't handle not being nominated for either President or Vice-President, how a simple roll call vote was going to tear the party apart, on and on and on and on...
Obviously that was a mightly effort of group wishful thinking.
Sheer Insannity (that great GOP water boy) has done the best he can to tell us the party is split, PUMA's matter, wedge politics are still working - and it's all turned out to be a lie.
Pathetic. This is the best the Republicans can offer? Wow!

About Howard Dean
August 28, 2008 - 19:48 ET by Parker1227Saw him last night lamenting republican attack ads and negativity, etc.
This, from the most poisonous chair of the DNC in modern history!

August 28, 2008 - 19:55 ET by Chris NormanI asked this on another thread, but I'll throw it out again, because I think it's an interesting concept:
Is the Obama camp upset about the Paris Hilton celebrity commercial specifically, or do they know, overall, that his overblown and silly messiah schtick will collapse like a souffle, now that it's been ridiculed by McCain on national television? Can this manufactured messiah image and the spell that he has over a lot of people stand up to public laughter and jeers? Once the spell is broken, will some people realize just how foolish this all has become? I think McCain should go after this Greek temple foolishness in new ads and contrast it with his own "straight talking", plain image. Thoughts?

Snark and emotion
August 28, 2008 - 20:03 ET by anneftxanneftx I grow increasingly irritated by the emotional, snarky nature of remarks from both sides of the great political divide. IMO, this election will be the a choice between the lesser of two evils. I have no emotion card in play. I'm looking at specifics, not pie in the sky hope and change drivel. I'm looking for aggressive diplomacy, not bomb first and ask questions later. I don't give a rat's derriere what the rest of the world thinks of us. People pleasing is a loser's game. As a science wonk, I want a candidate who will coherently blow a hole in Jimmy Hansen's 'hockey stick' model. A model is a model and his has been disproven and discarded by thousands of non-celebrity seeking scientists.
Ultimately I'd like a candidate who promises to cut bureauracy, pork laden legislation. Someone with a pen poised for endless vetoes. I'd like a party split btwn Legislative and Executive branches. Gridlock is preferable to new laws and regs.
As a woman, I'm terrified that a McCain presidency might mean attacks on Roe v Wade, but trust SCOTUS to prevail via the 'fixed law' argument.
Obama Derangement Syndrome is no more attractive than Bush Derangement Syndrome. Let's see more substance and less emotion.

August 29, 2008 - 00:45 ET by Hunter12Anne, Educate yourself as to what you can support and afford and then be willing to live with it. I wouldn't worry too much about the current status quo between abortion and anti-abortion positions. I don't see much near-term movement in that regard. I think most people of reason have decided that a child, who might be adopted, shouldn't be delivered feet first and stabbed in the neck to "terminate the pregnancy" as an option. Decisions between conception and that point are open to debate. As far as global warming goes, the days of August we've experienced where I live have been about 5 degrees below average takenover the last 20 years, so GW is over. If you want a government split between Executive and Legislative, you better punch that chad out on the GOP side, or you won't have much of a chance of achieving any balance. A SCOTUS that is the result of a liberal selection process will write more law than you could interpret in a decade. You need to decide what you really want and make it happen. BDS is a liberal disease caused by MSM kool-aid consumption. A grain of salt is the only thing you need to take to be cured of it.

August 28, 2008 - 23:05 ET by Randicus79how he's going to do all the stuff he's promised? I know what he wants to do, I have just never heard him explain how he's going to do it.
Conservatives deal in realism - This is the situation, how are we going to take care of it.
Liberals in idealism - Let's not fix the current problem, let's dream of the perfect solution that can never be implemented.
Case in point: Off shore drilling. Of course it's a short term solution, no one ever said it was a long term solution. Even McCain doesn't think its a long term solution; its just one part of the complete solution. But we need both. And Obama only promised that we would be off Mid East oil in 10 years. How we get there I have no idea and I really think he has no idea either. And other than possibly tapping our reserves I have not heard any ideas from LaBamba other than keeping my tires inflated to help me today.

August 28, 2008 - 23:49 ET by Dee Bunkbut it doesn't really matter - it's McCain's policies that will be implemented not the V.P.'s. Pro-life is not always the most important - just with McCain because some pro-lifers don't believe he'll appoint conservative judges and a pro-choice pick would exacerbate their fears.
As long as the VP is more conservative than Obama, he/she is acceptable to me. I'm voting against Obama not for McCain.
I agree with this Dee

But, PT makes a good point, cause ol' Mac is what, 72? What if he keel's over? Being POTUS isn't the most stress free job in America and whomever he picks is next in line.
I think his choice of VP is more relevant than most people think.

I agree with that HBK and certain choices will make me
August 29, 2008 - 00:35 ET by Dee Bunkmuch happier than others. Still any of the names floating out there are better than Obama (even Leiberman), so I'll vote for McCain no matter who he picks. If Obama gets in, he'll be in for 8. I do think Obama will get in, but I'm not going to be part of the reason.
I live in IL too so my vote for McCain will be pointless. I'm just hoping that if Obama wins, that it's with less than 50% of the vote so they don't feel they have a huge mandate.
I agree but
August 29, 2008 - 00:23 ET by PopularTechI understand that McCain's polices would be implemented which is why I said Pro-Life is not really relevant for the V.P. The V.P needs to bring to the table qualities that the President would be lacking and has the experience to become president in a worse case scenario. I see your point about the fears but Abortion is the least of McCain's problems.
An example is that I am personally Pro-Life but could vote for Rudy and would not have any fear of him running the country if something happened to McCain. Picking some rookie just because he is Pro-life is not a good idea IMO.

Right I agree poptech
August 29, 2008 - 00:29 ET by Dee BunkI think McCain will keep his word on judges so I'm not personally that worried about that (and I feel strongly about abortion). I do think others are worried though and it makes a huge difference because abortion is the only thing that conservatives get fired up about enough to protest, vote and donate money.
I too am more worried about his economic policies (but not as worried as I am about Obama's). I really don't thing the VP will have an effect on any of his policies.

August 28, 2008 - 23:24 ET by MikeknaJQuit spamming this message everywhere. It's annoying. And Pawlenty may not be perfect but he's WAY better than a lot of the other choices McCain was considering.
