Flashback to July 2007: ABC Coos Over ‘Presidential Nominee’ John Edwards's Visit to Wendy’s

[Note: NB's Scott Whitlock posted the following article just over a year ago on July 31, 2007.]

Robin Roberts, ABC Anchor and Diane Sawyer, ABC Anchor | NewsBusters.orgOn Tuesday’s "Good Morning America," anchors Robin Roberts and Diane Sawyer touted the marital relationship between Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards and his wife. Co-host Robin Roberts recounted the often repeated story of how the Edwards couple spend their wedding anniversary, including their recent 30th, at the restaurant Wendy’s.

Roberts, perhaps in a Freudian slip, even referred to the former North Carolina Senator as "presidential nominee John Edwards." Sawyer gushed that the candidate and his wife "are going to renew their vows." "Happy anniversary," she added.

Yet, this is the same morning show that has vastly underplayed stories that aren’t quite so cute and endearing for the '08 contender. For instance, during a recent GMA town hall with John Edwards on the subject of poverty, Ms. Sawyer only managed to mention the trial lawyer’s 28,000 square-foot mansion once.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

After an admittedly tough question (from an audience member) about Edwards’s $400 haircut, Sawyer observed, "...You have a big house that you're building..." However, considering that the subject matter, and that the ex-Senator received 38 minutes of air time, one would assume it would get greater prominence.

"Good Morning America" has also downplayed the fact that Edwards, who is on a "national poverty tour," sold his former Georgetown house for $5.2 million.

GMA isn’t alone in highlighting the cutesy story of the millionare couple spending their anniversaries at Wendy’s. During the 2004 campaign, Katie Couric, then a host of NBC’s "Today," cheerfully wondered about the dining experience. She cooed, "What do you say, ‘One Frosty, two straws?’"

A transcript of the July 31 segment, which aired at 7:20am, follows:

Robin Roberts: "We have a very special picture of the morning."

Diane Sawyer: "Yes."

Roberts: "It’s an anniversary party of sorts at Wendy’s. That, of course, presidential nominee John Edwards and his beautiful wife Elizabeth. 30 years. Their 30th anniversary."

Sawyer: "30th anniversary. And when we had our town meeting, he said they would celebrate with a number of things, one of them going back to Wendy's. And here is what he said."

[Clip of town hall interview]

Sawyer: "You have an anniversary coming up, the two of you?"

Elizabeth Edwards: "We do."

John Edwards: "That’s right. End of this month."

Sawyer: "End of this month? Have you gotten a present yet?"

John Edwards: "No. But we have big plans. We have big plans for our–"

Sawyer: "Is it going to be Wendy's again?"

John Edwards: "No, no. We'll go to Wendy's. We’ll go to Wendy’s."

Sawyer: "Is that your idea of a big plan?"

John Edwards: "Double cheeseburger and fries at Wendy’s is good."

Elizabeth Edwards: "I might get the Frosty ‘cause it’s the 30th."

Sawyer: "Right. Right."

[Clip ends]

Roberts: "She got that Frosty and also some chili as well. He had a cheeseburger."

Sawyer: "That’s right. And they are going to renew their vows. Happy anniversary."

Sawyer

So why has Diane Sawyer, who worked for Richard Nixon as a youngster become an unabashed toadie for the Democratic Party?

Simple

She wanted a job in NEWS.

Stay tuned for the

Stay tuned for the 'consulting spiritual advisor' BS.

"Tee hee hee!"

Elizabeth Edwards: "I might get the Frosty ‘cause it’s the 30th."

I think I know someone else who's getting 'The Frosty.'

I wish Elizabeth would make another vow - to strip this sanctimonious pecker of that 28,000 sq ft mansion!

You know..

In all this, I actually feel bad for the family.  If he would have just admitted it earlier then it wouldn't have become that big a story, because the MSM would have dismissed it.

Thomas Jefferson once said, 'We should never judge a president by his age, only by his works.' And ever since he told me that, I stopped worrying.

Modus Operandi

It's what the NEWS-crews do -- try to make a Fairy Tale out of the Democrats. Well, there rarely exists a "happily ever after" when it comes to progressives.

Once upon a time King Bill and Queen Hill were a happy, frolicing couple. Now they are just a mass of stinky evil.

Prince Barack and Princess Michelle will soon be exposed too, but for now it's all fairy tale.

NOW

Where is the National Organization for Women??  Shouldnt they be sticking up for Elizabeth?

[insert crickets here]

If this was Romney or any Republican, do you not think Diane, the View gals, Today, etc...would be interviewing NOW first thing tomorrow AM about that evil republican who cheated on his cancer stricken wife and then lied about it repeatedly?

NOW women

The NOW women are never around when the perp's a "liberal" Democrat. Their silence was deafening when the sexual harasser did his dirty work in the White House. Hypocrites all!

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal'

EDWARDS: MORALS NEVER MATTER, ITS A DEMOCRAT

D-EDWARDS:
ANOTHER SERIAL-ADULTERER

Edwards Admits Sexual Affair; Lied as Presidential Candidate
In an ABC NEWS NIGHTLINE Interview, Edwards Reveals He Cheated, But
Didn’t Father Child
By RHONDA SCHWARTZ and BRIAN ROSS, August 8, 2008
CRAWFISH NOTE: Here we go again…a shifty socialist
democrat millionaire is a lying adulterer. Not a new thing. Not
something to sweat. The lib-media will change his diapers. He will go
on lib-TV and “explain away” his slight imperfection. Other bad
behavior will be pointed to (evil conservatives) in order to justify
his bad behavior. The spin will involve his “victimhood” at some level.
The cleansing will be rapid and near complete very soon. Its what
happens in modern lib-media…agenda agenda agenda. Morals are of no
consequence to the secular socialist. Even in JFK’s serial adultery
times… the coverup was in for the democrat…now imagine if Nixon or Bush
was a serial adulterer instead of Klinton (aka HornDog). Democrat Teddy
K was an outrageous moral midget…he still lurks in the halls of
congress pushing secular socialism as its ancient hero.
Its not just what happens to national democrats in their life choices
but how it all gets smoothed over as critics are labeled “judgmental or
right wing faith nuts” or whatever.
What did Ross Perot say after discovering an employee was an adulterer?
At his firing he told him “if your wife cannot trust you neither can I”.
In the liberal world serial adultery has nothing to do with overall
character or fitness to be trusted by millions of voters. Its the
modern democrat party whether its HornDog or Jesse J or sicko Teddy or
slick Eddy… morals matter less and less to them. Not a good thing for a
culture. Suckers.

   Well we probably should

Well we probably should cut these two ladies a little slack.  They are not exposed to a lot of news considering their busy schedules at ABC.  And because they are in successful careers they probably are never in a supermarket where they would happen to see the latest news reported by the National Enquirer.  Maybe while they eat their breakfasts in the morning they should ask their maids if there are any important 'news events' going on in the world.

Paging Mr Hart! Paging Gary Hart!

Boy, talk aboutcher deja vu....

The MSM is really letting their relationship with the Dems/Lefties stand in the way of their ability to scoop stories and sell copy.  First it was Gary Hart affair that had to fall to the "second-tier" media to break, then Drudge had to keep the Monica Lewinsky story alive single-handedly for a while before it grew legs, now the NE has to take the lead on the Silk Pony take down - think of the sales and ad sales the MSM are screwing their investors out of.  Their investors need to re-valuate the cost of bias.

Hope they all have back-up carreer plans.

Note:  I stand open to correction about the MSM and Gary Hart - it was a while ago and I had young kids keeping me busy.

When a politician turns his wedding anniversary into a perfectly staged photo op, be suspicious.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

John Edwards is a lyin' pig!!!!

I remember this article last year on this site.  Thanks for reposting due to the admission of the affair today.  John Edwards is a lyin' bottom-of-the-barrell pig who has had MULTIPLE affairs and is probably having one or two right now as his wife is sick with cancer.  He gives men a bad name.  I feel so sorry for his wife, and if I were her, I'd leave him.  Cancer and all.  Life is too short to share a bed with someone that continuously lies and betrays you.

He gives men a bad name

LOL . . . there is an old saying (a "saying" not a "joke") that 98% of the lawyers give the other 2% a bad name!!

What a wonderful article.

What a wonderful article.  Is there a chance in the world that these 2 have a clue what tools they are?  Sawyer is ABC's answer to the living dead at NBC, Andrea Mitchell.

Sorry, Willard

I had been thinking & talking about this absurd little bit of TV cock-and-bull all day to anyone who will listen. It was such a disgracefully contrived little stab at humanizing this elitist richboy Gomer Pyle loser that I felt ill after watching it. It wasn't just propaganda or ABC helping concoct a human side to one of their preferred candidates, it was a trip to The Kingdom Of Make-Believe only without the trolly. Thank you for helping to remind readers of it, one is trying hard not to gloat too much with a big old In Your Face I TOLD YOU SO!! to some of my dingbat liberal colleagues who would get beet red faced with hysteria when I would offer the opinion that John Edwards was a complete phony and a creep. They will all be provided with links to this article and a consoling "I'm sorry your boy turned out to be a liar and a cheat."

Ah hell, go ahead and

Ah hell, go ahead and gloat. What's the fun in being right if you can't rub their faces in it?

If...

If this twit had an (R) after his name, this story would have been out there on the first whiff  of allegation.

All I'd like to know is, how much $$$$ has been changing hands in the last two weeks, since NE scooped the, ahem - legitimate news outlets?

Elizabeth Edwards

The talk today is about the many youngsters and campaign workers who gave up their lives for a while to volunteer for John Edwards. And that he fooled them into thinking he was viable as a candidate, all the while knowing that this scandal was lurking in the background.

If it is true, as Edwards claims, that he told his wife about the affair in 2006, then Elizabeth also fooled the American public.

Why do I feel like the meanest lady in town for mentioning this?

I really am sorry that her heart is broken.

The lady is dying with

The lady is dying with terminal cancer. It's a terrible thing to go through this as well.

I pray for her.

Vote 4 change. Vote 4 anything. See Jack & Mr Shy's first campaign ad for the ONLY viable 3rd party candidate.

"Where's The Beef

"Where's The Beef !!"

Witnesses claim to have overheard Ms. Hunter exclaiming after her latest liasion with Mr. Edwards and her disappointment for not recieving the "biggie" upgrade when she had her liasions with him.

I remember several months

I remember several months ago Tyra Banks had Edwards on where he was eschewing the virtues of marriage and commitment, and brought Ms. Banks  the same Wendys meal he and Elizabeth shared on thier first date.

Maybe next time John can bring on some cheap wine and edible bikini briefs instead.

Edwards

Things I never liked about John Edwards:

He made millions making good doctors look incompetent and uncaring. His hair. His claim of two Americas. The way he talks out of the side of his mouth. His pious blatherings about the sad state of the American family. That he had the gall to think this affair would not come out. That he had the temerity to use his wife in the campaign.

The one thing I love:

Now the SOB will get his.

Character and Candidates

John Edward is often touted as a brilliant lawyer. Hillary Clinton has been called the smartest woman in the world. I often hear Obama supporters touting his Harvard education and and high level of intelligence as one of the main reasons for their support. While it is true that education and intelligence are desirable qualities, they only play a minor role in my voting decision. Intelligence is not, in and of itself, a virtue. Intelligence, knowledge and education can be used for either good or evil. While education, knowledge and intelligence can help a good man make more informed decisions, they can also be used by an evil man to carry out diabolical plans. What is most important to me, is the character of a presidential candidate. Character is what separates good men from bad men, bad men from evil men, corrupt men from honest men, loyal men from traitorous men, selfless men from selfish men, faithful men from philanderers, humble men from conceited "show-offs", modesty from vanity, and ethical men from scoundrels.

I hear you, Gary...

There's this kid in my son's cohort at school who is absolutely brilliant at math and also a chess genius at age 7.  But beyond that, he pretty much gets kicked out of class everyday  because he is always throwing pencils or just screaming out loud.

You could make an argument that he is not being challenged enough by our public school system, but I think he is not disciplined enough at home.

and about 400 years ago...

Europeans settled this land mostly with the intent of escaping an indolent aristocracy.  Our constitutional structure reflects this suspicion of a professional ruling class.

The greatest threat to America today -- as an actual country and an ideal -- is the recreation of this aristocracy in the media, academia and the celebrity professions.  These people necessarily assume they know how to run the lives of us country bumpkins better than we can.  They had just better hope their Prius doesn't break down on a country road when they are out doing their North Face day hikes.  (Problem is, us country folk would be obliged to help them get going again... mostly so they don't stay.)

Education

As my Daddy used to say "If you take a damn fool and educate him, all you get is an educated damn fool!" (You can substitute "liberal" for "fool" - same thing!!)

Now they're falling all over Barak

just like they fell all over John Edwards and Bill Clinton. The "Love Fest" for these political leaders is totally irrational. I can't tell you how many people I talk to don't look past the image presented by the politician's marketing team. I guess that's why the McCain ads about Barak have hit a nerve. They point directly at this issue and expose the false appearence of Obamessiah.
