For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: U.S. loses fewer troops in Iraq last month than since the start of the invasion:
Eleven US soldiers were killed in Iraq in July, the lowest monthly toll since the 2003 invasion, according Pentagon figures, highlighting what US commanders say is a marked drop in overall violence. The number compares with the deadliest month of November 2004 when 137 American troops were slain, an independent toll by icasualties.org showed. The previous low was in May this year when 19 soldiers were killed.
Think this might have something to do with the surge? Will media report it? Will this impact the upcoming elections?

July 31, 2008 - 12:32 ET by MassConservWhile telling the story of a US Navy captian being fired from his post as commander of the carrier USS George Washington, Reuters managed to abridge WWII history so much it appears the US bombed Japan for practically no reason.

Many Japanese are sensitive about the use of nuclear power by military forces. The Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki came under nuclear attack from the United States at the end of World War Two in August 1945.

July 31, 2008 - 17:51 ET by celatorThere was a publically funded exhibit about WW II at, I believe, the Smithsonian Institute, a few years ago. The exhibit used exactly the same propaganda tool: the exhibit "explained" how the US dropped nuclear bombs on Japan in a manner that suggested we did so for no reason whatsoever. You see, we were the bad guys, and the Japanese, at the time, were just going about their innocent ways when we declared war on them. The notion fit perfectly with the leftist view of history, of course.
The public outcry against this complete lie was deafening. Even at that, it took a monumental effort to get the history corrected.

A Soldier's View of O-bomb-a's "visit"
July 31, 2008 - 12:54 ET by mattm(received via forwarded e-mail - This message was forwarded to me by my neighbor with this message at the beginning: "The writer is a friend of my neighbor sharing his experiences with Obama's visit...")
Hello everyone,
As you know I am not a very political person. I just wanted to pass along that Senator Obama came to Bagram Afghanistan for about an hour on his visit to 'The War Zone'. I wanted to share with you what happened.
He got off the plane and got into a bullet proof vehicle, got to the area to meet with the Major General (2 Star) who is the commander here at Bagram. As the Soldiers where lined up to shake his hand he blew them off and didn't say a word as he went into the conference room to meet the General.
As he finished, the vehicles took him to the ClamShell (pretty much a big top tent that military personnel can play basketball or work out in with weights) so he could take his publicity pictures playing basketball. He again shunned the opportunity to talk to Soldiers to thank them for their service.
So really he was just here to make a showing for the American's back home that he is their candidate for President. I think that if you are going to make an effort to come all the way over here you would thank those that are providing the freedom that they are providing for you.
I swear we got more thanks from the NBA Basketball Players or the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders than from one of the Senators, who wants to be the President of the United States. I just don't understand how anyone would want him to be our Commander-and-Chief. It was almost that he was scared to be around those that provide the freedom for him and our great country.
If this is blunt and to the point I am sorry but I wanted you all to know what kind of caliber of person he really is. What you see in the news is all fake.

"Andy, if I worked and served the people in the 13th District in Chicago, I would have known all of the players. And to win that district, would I have gamed the system to run unopposed? Tony Rezko would not have had a seat at my table. Either Obama is a fool and is blind to what should have been obvious, or someone like Tony is fine by Obama’s standards. The guy is a dirtball. And a dirtball would not be part of my circle, certainly not my inner circle. I would rather not be elected than associate with someone like Rezko.
I would not choose Rev. Wright, Rev. Meeks, or Father Plager as my spiritual mentors, not for political reasons or any other reason. Again, he is either blind or an opportunist. Would I be hanging out with Mr. Ayers? Would you? Would you refuse to be photographed with Gavin Newsom? There is a pattern with this guy - he manipulates; and for him the ends justify the means. He lacks character.
Getting not one bill passed in the first 6 years of his career in not inspiring. Having Emil Jones hand him the ball 26 times on the one-yard line in order to make Obama a United States Senator does not cut it either. What deals he made, he did to benefit no one but himself. He never worked long enough in either Senate to help the people who elected him. Andy, I could never imagine you taking credit for legislation someone else slaved over. Starting in his community organizing days he claimed sole responsibility for other people’s accomplishments all for the purpose to boosting his career.
....
Andy, I have consistently found you to be a compassionate person, but more importantly you have always put your money where your mouth is. Does it not bother you that a guy like Obama can serve a poor district and give away a paltry $1000 to charity? He only stepped up his giving when he decided to run for President and he knew his charitable giving would be made public. How could anyone see that much misery and not try to personally do something about it?
Please, show me something this guy ever did that was not done in a calculated fashion to create and advance his own personal narrative? Something selfless, perhaps, just because it was the right thing to do.
Every person I have talked to who worked at the Law Review at Harvard with him, or in the latter part of his career, said the same thing: he was arrogant and self-centered. One person laughed, saying Obama wanted to be King of the World, that he was always running for something, never staying in one place long enough to amass accomplishments or be held accountable. "
It goes on, but she is an honest liberal.

DNC must be loving Ohio, lately
July 31, 2008 - 14:27 ET by IgnatzJFahrquarI bet the DNC just loves the news coming out of Ohio, lately.
Let’s see, McCain has closed the gap on B Hussein so that it
is a virtual tie. So what do the boneheaded Dims in Cuyahoga
County (a Dimocrat stronghold in the
State that includes Cleveland)
do? They let their arrogant “they can’t touch us” attitude get them
investigated by the Feds and the IRS. A couple days ago over 100 Feds and IRS
agents descended on the County offices clearing out the 3rd and 4th
floors so that they could execute their search warrant and haul away reams of
information.
So here’s the count:
Jimmy Demora, County Commissioner (D) – Under investigation
for bribery, corruption
Frank Russo, County Auditor (D) - Under investigation for bribery,
corruption
Pat O’Malley, Former County Recorder (D) – Recently pleaded
out to obscenity charges and resigned
And let us not forget Marc Dann, Former Ohio Attorney
General (D) – Resigned after an investigation into sexual harassment charges
within his office.
All in all a whirlwind tour by the Liberal party here the
past few months. It has even gotten to the point where the local fish wrap The
Plain Dealer has had its columnists discussing how change is needed and that the
natives are getting restless about the Democratic “leadership”.
So the change that B Hussein has been spouting about may be
in the other direction here in the Buckeye
State.

1:11 pm THE FOED PROPOSAL*
Whereas there is lacking only the political and economic will to feed and educate billions of people who form an enlarging base at the bottom of the global, manmade pyramidal economy; and
Whereas the artificially designed construction called the global political economy exists for the benefit of the human community, and supposedly not to satisfy the insatiable greediness of a small minority of the human family who recklessly consume and relentlessly hoard resources at their whim; and
Whereas there are human institutions of the United Nations willing, ready and able to perform the tasks associated with feeding and educating these people; and
Whereas humanitarian action calls out for a resolute, global confrontation of hunger, poverty and illiteracy; and
Whereas humanity naturally protects itself from danger and necessarily safeguards other creatures from extinction; and
Whereas we of humankind live on a relatively small, evidently finite, noticeably frangible planet without causing the irreversible degradation of its environs and the relentless ravage of Earth’s body as a fit place for human habitation by our children and coming generations,
Now, Therefore, We Propose the following Summary of a Program of Action.
_______________________________________________
Target Population:
There are three billion people at the deepest and widest part of the human world’s pyramid-shaped, global political economy.
Administrators:
Under the auspices of the United Nations, the UN Development Program (UNDP) has general administrative authority for the FOED OPERATION; the UN Fund for Population (UNFPA) will be responsible for health education and training; and the World Food Program (WFP) will be put in charge of food nutrition, acquisition and distribution.
Aim:
The construction of 100,000 FOED OPERATION facilities over 20 years, beginning with the most impoverished areas worldwide. These facilities will provide children and adults with food and education, thereby offering an immediate solution to nutritional needs and a long term solution to poverty and ignorance.
Cost:
There are three billion dollars (one dollar per person) for construction costs of FOED OPERATION facilities. Costs related to feeding and educating people would be borne over time by UN member states who will agree to provide 10% of GNP, thought of as a “humanitarian tithe.”
Goal:
Through education, make it possible for fertile human beings to voluntarily make informed, independent decisions regarding reproduction and to reliably provide a foundation for their improved standard of living, in light of evolving understandings of what is sustainable population growth and sustainable economic development.

Scary indeed.
These words in particular stuck out at me -- "Through education, make it possible for fertile human beings to voluntarily make informed, independent decisions regarding reproduction..."
Something about those words just ring completely hollow to me. Gee, I wonder why? Maybe because the rest of that screed sounds so fantastically fascistic?
Edit:
If we're going to let someone rule the world, wouldn't it be better to get someone cool and quirky, like, say... Dr. Evil?

August 1, 2008 - 11:08 ET by bassndudeClear, Steven is evidently a world over population extremist. He is a member of sustainabilityscience.org. This is a really weird fellow. He sayes he used to work for the North Carolina Disability Determination Service and Social Security Administration. Sayes he is a psychologist. Sounds more like to me, he could use a good one.
