For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: President Bush says, "Wall Street got drunk" (video embedded right).
"There's no question about it," Bush said. "Wall Street got drunk, that's one of the reasons I asked you to turn off the TV cameras. It got drunk and now it's got a hangover. The question is how long will it sober up and not try to do all these fancy financial instruments."
Is he right? Is there anything wrong with being so blunt? Or did Bush cross the line with this remark?

The TSA is completely off the chain
July 23, 2008 - 09:19 ET by blogonatorDid anyone else see this?
This is exhibit A of the government run amok. The TSA is seemingly accountable to no one. Their most obvious function appears to be humiliating passengers.

What's really at work here
July 23, 2008 - 11:31 ET by blogonatorThe TSA is in the business of creating the illusion of security. If they can convince Americans that somehow the threat of terrorism has diminshed ever so slightly since they started making you take off your shoes, confiscating nail clippers, banning liquids greater than 3 oz, feeling up your artificial leg, and pulling out your nipple piercings, they've all just justified their existence.

July 23, 2008 - 11:38 ET by Dan The Man 2Bloggy, security in any aspect of life is an illusion. What is strange is than you ignore the real life instnaces of them actcually foiling a real highjack. The TSA doesnt release those to teh public but Im sure it happens because there are people like you out there flying with the unsuspecting public.
Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.
Interesting...
July 24, 2008 - 04:52 ET by UnsaneSo I take it you also wish for your local police force to be disbanded? After all, the security they provide is illusory, as they do one of three things:
1) Provide a deterrent to crime.
2) Investigate crime after the fact.
3) Bother and harass otherwise law-abiding citizens.
If someone came in my home right now to ransack the place and kill me, I have very little preventive power. Sure, I could dial 911, but I'll be just as dead when the cops manage to show up 4-6 minutes later.
What say you?
Whoever casts a vote for Barack Obama is nothing more than a common thief. Whoever fails to vote against him is nothing more than a moral coward.

July 24, 2008 - 13:52 ET by blogonatorYou can pick up your crown at Burger King.
Seriously, the security provided by the TSA is illusory because it is useless theater. None of the petty inconveniences they put air travelers through will stop a determined terrorist from carrying explosives on a plane via his rectum. And if a guy is happy enough blowing himself and a hundred other people up at 20,000 feet, I don't think he'll have much deterring him from a little internal packing. That it hasn't happened yet is not because some brave TSA employee made you remove your 6 oz tube of toothpaste from your carry-on. If you want to keep terrorism out of the skies, keep the planes on the ground. Short of that, we're all stuck accepting some tangible risk. For anyone, TSA employee or otherwise, to tell you they're keeping you safe from terrorism by humiliating and belittling air travelers is bs.
Police forces exist to keep the peace, and by and large in this country they do a good job of that. The bullet in your chest from an officer's service revolver as you reach for your gun to shoot someone is no illusion. Criminals know that and, unless they're mentally impaired, fear that.
Don't blame me for your lack of reading comprehension
July 25, 2008 - 03:07 ET by UnsaneHow is what I say a leap of logic? Note that you say:
Police forces exist to keep the peace, and by and large in this country they do a good job of that. The bullet in your chest from an officer's service revolver as you reach for your gun to shoot someone is no illusion. Criminals know that and, unless they're mentally impaired, fear that.
YET, just as nothing is stopping a determined terrorist from blowing up a plane, in spite of the presence of cops, in spite of the multitude of law enforcement agencies in just this one county (Harris County, the seat of which is Houston), we still have criminals for some reason.
Again, cops do three things: deter, investigate crime, and be complete pricks and assholes to the law abiding citizenry because they are convinced - well, too many of them, anyway - that WE work for THEM, NOT the other way around.
Whoever casts a vote for Barack Obama is nothing more than a common thief. Whoever fails to vote against him is nothing more than a moral coward.
The TSA is nothing
July 24, 2008 - 18:17 ET by I.am.DILLIGAFbut a basic waste of time. They dont have to enforce there own rules <which are differant at all airports>they need to get uniform in there rulings. Its like the gun necklece that one girl was wearing, sure it was shaped like a gun but it was 1 1/2"long and they made her take it off and give it to them. Does that sound like you could shoot anyone let alone anything with it Jesus it was a necklece.
As far as calling 911 when someone is trying to get into my house, if they can get by the dog without becoming a snack then they are nothing more then a target when they get inside. God bless the second amendment.

July 23, 2008 - 10:14 ET by EnDashEnDash Bush is partly right. There is also plenty of blame to go around: for the Congress, which passed the 1996 Banking Act; for irresponsible borrowers; and for irresponsible lenders.
Nevertheless, it is refreshing and commendable for the president to speak so plainly. More plain talk of this kind would be welcome from the administration and from the GOP presidential candidate.

Rush has suggested this type of thing before, but the latest was on Monday if memory serves me correctly...
Now I doubt that the msm is going to carry much of this...but it is about time McCain listened to somebody...maybe he will actually go to ANWR like Rush suggested instead of defeating the votes he has for years...if he flipped on drilling elsewhere certainly once he sees ANWR he would have to see what a fool he has been all these years anyway, he is part of the problem we have had for years, we would be close to having things online from ANWR now if he hadn't defeated the bill by one vote in 05.

What complete imbecile thought that one up? More importantly, why does McCain not do something about the fools, imbeciles, and morons that are managing and selling his image to the public? Something serious needs to be done here.

NYT profits plunge
July 23, 2008 - 18:53 ET by ThisnThatAs we suspected, the NYT profit plunged 82% this quarter. AND, they can't figure out what the problem is. They think it's because of technology.
HA!
How about "just plain stupidity" and ideological malevolence? The NYT doesn't understand what a laughingstock it is when it rejects a presidential candidate's op-ed piece. Did you know that on March 2 the NYT invited Kucinich to write an op-ed on "What I would talk about if I were still running for President"? YET they rejected McCain's legitimate op-ed article? What a joke.
But still, the Times is searching and wondering .... what's the problem? Who can we blame? How long can we hide from the real truth?

Future Thoughts
July 23, 2008 - 19:12 ET by AeroSpearJust a hypothetical: If Obama gets elected despite his recent gaffes which are being overlooked/omitted by the Old Media, then he does something majorly stupid while in office. Will people write off completely the Old Media and blame them for controlling/manipulating the election? The media is trying to demonstrate their power which in turn could be their demise.
It might not have been explained in all its nuances but do you get my point?
I know I've already written them off and only surprised when they do a decent story.
Nah
July 24, 2008 - 04:59 ET by UnsaneSadly, I doubt it. Let's say the media succeeds in getting their Lord and Savior elected. And he turns out to be the second coming of Jimmy Carter.
I say the media will change tack and savage him strictly in order to prop up their credibility. And it will work for the most part.
Although keep in mind some aspects of the media are dying anyway. I expect to see a whole lot of newspapers fold in the future...they CAN hang around even in the age of the Internet, but as long as they remain the way they are now, they are going bye-bye. And I figure that by about 2020 or so, the evening newscast we all so know and love will be gone as their core audience that supports them out of habit fades away to the point where it simply isn't worth the effort of continuing.
Couldn't happen to nicer people!
