Weekend Sports Open Thread

For golf lovers missing Tiger, isn't it great to see Greg Norman on the leader board?

I know Furyk is the American favorite, but how can you NOT root for the Shark, especially now that he's with Chrissy? Another great article about the new couple is here (photo courtesy Getty Images).

Why am I always the last to know about these things?

Anything else sports-related you want to talk about, be my guest -- for me, it's all Greggie and Chrissy this weekend. ;-)

I can't believe the choking shark...

is in contention, to see him win the British would be a good thing for him after his monster collapse at Augusta in '96.

NS,

I played tennis as a kid at Holiday Park, home court of la Evert!

I wish them all the best.

B,

Well, growing up in a tennis household, I was, of course, originally a Billie Jean fan. Then, along came Chrissy, and we all fell in love. They just did a feature about the two of them, and are now interviewing her. What a doll.

Although, at some point you should ask me about the inside dish on her. I've got a friend that used to be on the tour with her, and Chrissy apparently isn't as saintly as marketed. ;-) ns

NS

Oh, I know it...jokes, right?

I remember way back when, seeing Chrissy (in Pig Tails) at a tournamment at the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club, the ladies used to stay with the members.

B,

No, not jokes. Less saintly. ;-) ns

Chrissy a doll?  Bah!

Chrissy a doll?  Bah!  I'll take Doris Day in 1950 over her anyday.

NL

I read that subject line and thought it referred to Chrissy Mathews....and suspected someone was nuts!

Then I saw who posted it, and what you posted.

Whew!  :)

P.S.  Chrissy has a Ft. Lauderdale accent, which only we natives can discern.

Ft Lauderdale has a

Ft Lauderdale has a discernable accent?  The Pensacola area certainly has a discernable accent, but the rest of Florida has been so overrun with retired Yankees ...  and Palm Beach, I thought they have a NYC accent!

Not bad, but...

Chrissy ain't bad...

But my mind is going back to a July morning in 2004 when I was retrieving coffee in my apartment and listening to results from the Wimbledon championship.  :-)

(Look!  Is it a tennis thread without me bringing up...)

Forget Golf and Tennis

How about some chat about real sports, like football?

Is the Pac-10 going to have a bad year with all that they lost to the pros?  Can USC claim another conference championship?

And what about  Georgia?  A well-rounded team with lots of returning players.  But the Top 25 teams all looked pretty good this year and I think there will be a few surprises floating to the top.

Doc

Please tell me you're not a Dawgs fan.  One of those around here is quite enough.

I know they've been picked to win it all by SI (ah, the curse!), but they have to get through my Gators first, and we're returning quite a young and talented crew as well.  #5 ranking works just fine for me.

Timmy rocks.

Not a Georgia fan at all...

I thought the prediction of Georgia winning the BcS is a little bit shaky.  However, the SEC is not as strong as in the past so the Bulldogs should  have a less difficult run through their conference.  The Big 12 is looking strong this year with perennial faves OK and UT looking good, but also some surprising strength from Texas Tech, Kansas and... possibly ... (gasp) ... even Baylor.  Baylor is not BCS quality, and they may not be "bowl worthy," but they are no longer a doormat and could definitely play an upset role.

I don't know....

Georgia has to face the most difficult SEC West teams away...Auburn & LSU.  Speaking of the West, any Bama fans here?  How's it going with that new coach?

Coaches....will the 'Ol Ball coach do anything other than scare the rest of us in the SEC?  He's been good for a few heart attacks, lately.

Florida's schedule looks much easier than most years, we apparently shed the dread Auburn & LSU for Ole Miss & Arkansas.   Oh, and we have the infamous Miami on the schedule this year...sorry, gotta do it....can't spell scum without UM.

As for the rest of the conferences, I don't really pay too much attention until the bowl picture begins to shape up....although I am an OK fan.

And finally....where's Rick....we need a comment about Phat Phil.

Greg & Chrissie

My brother saw them a few months ago in an Apple store at a mall in Boca Raton.  He said nobody else appeared to recognize them, but he did.  He didn't know they were an item at the time but said it was definitely Greg and Chris.

So . . . they do get out together.

I'm a big Norman fan ever since 1986 when he held the third round lead in all 3 majors. Only bagged the British that year though. Unfortunately, I've met the man several times and his unfriendly disposition has taken a lot of the sheen off my admiration for him. He's frequently rude and short with people and has a bit of that reputation among his peers. I'm still cheering for him though. Still has a lot of flair and style.

Why am I always the last to know about these things?

Greg had a really messy, bitter divorce. Did you hear how much it cost him?

I like Greg Norman, and I

I like Greg Norman, and I felt sorry for him when he lost that lead at the Masters to Nick Faldo.  But I was born to Irish parents, most of my family still resides in Ireland, so I'm in Padraig (Paw-reg) Harrington's corner.  Go on, Paddy!
