For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Will it be Mitt?

The most obvious assets that Romney would bring to the Republican ticket include his economic expertise, fundraising prowess and potential to give McCain a boost in more than one battleground state. But a less talked about plus side to a Romney vice presidential candidacy is that despite his perpetually sunny demeanor, the former Massachusetts governor is not afraid to unleash razor-sharp political attacks against the opposition.

What say you NewsBusters? Would Mitt be the perfect candidate to do what McCain seems uncomfortable with, namely, tear into the opponent?

Tough call

That is a tough call.  First, does Mitt want the job.  I have not heard either way.  Second, will McCain reign in his ego and allow Mitt to attack the opposition?  That would have Mitt out front and center and would take the lime light away from McCain.

McCain needs someone to do his dirty work for him but he also needs to keep himself in the front row.  I see him apprehensive with a McCain - Romney ticket and Romney taking center stage.

It will be a tough juggling act.  So to make a long answer short, I don't see Juan asking Mitt to be his second.

I supported Romney for

I supported Romney for prez

If Mc asks him to be veep he will probably take it

as long as backstabbing RINO Mc is on the ticket my vote goes elsewhere - period.

I hope not

Even though I disagree with some of Romney's ideas, I respect him a lot and find him a likeable person. Uniting with McCain would certainly hinder his political future, even if they won the election. And besides, if McCain is too lazy to criticize Obama himself then why should the GOP send someone in to do that for him? McCain is going to run his campaign however he pleases and would keep Romney on a short leash.

Not Mitt but Michael Steele

Mrs. nofate and I were talking about this very thing this morning after she heard one of our local conservative talk radio guys talk about his take on McLame after attending a private affair in Ladue (a very upscale suberb of St. Louis) last night.  For reasons he wouldn't elaborate on he came to believe that it might be Michael Steele, which would, in my mind, solve a couple of McLame's problems quickly.  Steele is certainly no wilting violet when it comes to stating his views.  It just struck me that the whole dynamic might change very quickly if that were to happen.  It also struck me that we will really get to see the racist side of the dumbocrats if that happens.  Clarence Thomas and Condoleeza Rice were warmups.

Another point this radio guy made was that he was very impressed at the way McLame worked the crowd.  He is evidently very adroit at the repartee required and this, radio guy thinks, is part of the reason the Barack of Obama will not condescend to debate or have a town hall meeting with McLame- we all know how good the Barack of Obama can be without a teleprompter and no puppetmasters whispering in his ear.  Argggh!

On a different tack, one of the local TV stations handled the affair by starting out with a mild dustup that occurred when the TV crews filming an interview with McLame did not like being told that they had to use certain camera angles, etc.  They made a point of showing a female campaign worker responding that they didn't need to know who she was, and their reply, "We just want to know who we're working with".  Charles Jaco then went on to do the interview, but I was at work and couldn't watch anymore.

Update:  Just read expatriot's comment:

McCain needs someone to do his dirty work for him but he also needs to keep himself in the front row.

Steele fits the bill perfectly.  He is definitely "certified black enough to criticize" the Barack of Obama (and his little wife Michelle too!).  This is of course pure speculation.  But it's fun to think about.

Steele

I've long admired Michael Steele and think he would be a great choice. Of course, the libs would respond with charges of pandering to the black ['scuse me, "African-American" ] electorate, but that can be dealt with.

I really like Romney and

I really like Romney and what (I think) he would bring to the ticket. I've heard it said that he's a financial genius and understands what makes our economy tick better than any other politician. And his background of actual achievements is very impressive. He is a "get er done" type of person and we really need that.

He was on Laura Ingraham's program this morning did very well. No BS, and lotsa straight talk.

But Steele would also be very good and I like him also. Very smart, articulate, understands what needs to be done and says it like it us.

Either one would be ok by me.

Orin Hatch's diddy

I read where Orin Hatch, conservative Republican, has written a song for his friend Ted Kennnedy. "Sailing Home" is what it says, referring to the swimmer's return to the Senate. Quite sentimental and a nice gesture. However, I believe it clearly demonstrates the attitude of the "club" we have representing "We the People" in Washington. If the Senate of the United States is Kennedy's "home", where does that leave us? Very telling and sad. Term limits are needed if the nation is to survive.

Mitt - Best Choice From A Weak Field

I voted for Mitt, and I like him personally, and I appreciated his sincere outreach to Conservatives in the Primaries.

I am very skeptical that he can put Michigan in play for the GOP ticket.

However, he causes no obvious damage to the campaign, so maybe he would be the "least destructive" choice.

I do see one serious downside.

The MSM pundits and the center-left elements of the GOP will claim Mitt is a Conservative.

If we do not instantly rally to McCain's side after Mitt is chosen, they will excoriate Conservatives for childish self-interest and for extremism.

Their claims will be false.

Mitt is friendly to Conservatives, but, bottom line, he is a centrist, like all the current GOP leaders, except McCain, who is center-left.

zee...

"...and I appreciated his sincere outreach to Conservatives in the Primaries."

Don't get upset with my comment, there's been plenty of that lately here on NB, but the above statement by you shows me Mitt's weakness. He never would have had to reach out to conservatives if he had already been one, and that's why I would not vote for him.

Clear Thinker - We Basically Agree

C.T.,

I completely agree that Mitt is not a Conservative.

Duncan Hunter was my first choice in the Primaries, but he had no chance to win, so Mitt was my very distant second choice.

Even if Mitt is chosen for veep, so many of McCain's policies are so objectionable to me, I don't think I can vote for the GOP ticket.

Of course, I live in a solid blue Obama state, so it doesn't matter who I vote for anyway.

Bait and Switch

With just a little luck McCain will forget when and where the convention is being held and the delegates can select a real candidate (Romney) to run against the socialist. If this happens I think Romney should select Cindy McCain as his running mate. Wouldn't they make a great looking couple?

wealthy wife

I have had similar daydream thoughts about McCain suddenly turning down the nomination or being replaced by the delegates with Romney. But alas I do not believe that it will happen.

The one thing that I would like to see  John McCain do is to become more enthusiastic than a potted plant.

Mitt does not need a wealthy wife as he is already very wealthy.

I've thought that Romney

I've thought that Romney would be a great choice. My belief is they would balance each other nicely. I've also heard some support for Palin as VP. I don't know much about her, but what I've heard has been good.

I'm not an economist, but I do believe that we're growing. And I can remember this press conference here where people yelling "recession this, recession that" -- as if you're economists. - Bush

Let's wait on Mrs. Palin

Palin for VP?  Hell no!  Let her keep building her record in AK, and win the 2010 election...at which point, if she elects to set her sights on Washington, she does so as a presidential candidate, even if McCain wins the White House this year (imagine her kicking McCain out of the White House in the primaries!).

"Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." - from the Bhagavad Gita, quoted by J. Robert Oppenheimer at 0530 MST on 16 July 1945

I voted for Mitt

NO OBAMUNISTS PLEASE!

I think Mitt would be a great choice but

Is he really good with fundraising? I thought he spent most of his own money in the primary.

I think he'd be good especially for economic advice since neither McCain or Obama have a very good grasp on it.

I can't see McCain picking him though because he didn't like him.

I think he would do best picking an African American to take race off the table and second best would be a woman. African Americans and women are Obama's biggest supporters and also the ones that most easily buy the dems race and sex baiting. Condi Rice would cover both. She would be the best choice.

"Constantly attacking (peaceful) religions rather than politely sharing your own shows lack of faith " DB

Why, because of her sex and

Why, because of her sex and color of her skin?  Thats the game the liberals play Dee, we don't need to play their game.

Mitt did use his own money, but he also raised more than any of the candidates.

CV - I didn't know that Mitt also raised more money

So that could be good I guess. I have mixed emotions still for Romney as V.P. I wanted him to be President. I don't think that any V.P. will be able to bring anything close to the money Obama raises.

We have to play their game. All criticism of Obama is going to be labeled racist.

In a way I don't really care. I don't think McCain is going to win no matter who he picks. At least if he picks an African American, then Obama can't cry racism for every little thing and when he's elected it won't be with such a landslide.

I'm most likely voting for McCain unless he picks a pro-choice V.P. I still don't think he will win though.

I'm still hoping he steps down or is forced out on some technicality and Romney ends up as our candidate. I know it's a pipe dream but it's all I have.

Mitt

Didn't Mitt help MA get socialized medicine?

McCain has enough trouble aligning with Republican values.  Does he need a VP that has questionable Republican values?

Gotham...

Just curious.... Do you mean Republican values or Conservative values?

45 Communist Goals for America http://www.nationmakers.com/com_goals.htm

Is the GOP no longer Conservative?

"Just curious.... Do you mean Republican values or Conservative values?"

There used to be a time when that question didn't need to be asked as the GOP values were very close to Conservative values.

McCain is left of Center and has a record of reaching across the aisle (i.e. doing what the Democrats want).  Romney has on his record a "big government" social healthcare program.  I had always thought that the GOP stood for small government.

I agree. McLame should pick the Alaska Governor

But I got the impression

But I got the impression that McCain doesn't really like Mitt much at all.  And if that's the case, I don't think McCain would choose him.  McCain just strikes me as the type that wouldn't pick a person that would be the most advantageous for his election.  Rather, he'd pick somebody he personally likes and agrees with and wants to have the job.

I do like that aspect of Senator McCain's personality.

But I got the impression

Zoinks.  I double posted.  Too much caffeine.

Need opinions...

I'm interested in everyone's opinion about a candidate in my congressional district that wants all Republicans to take the following pledge...

I BELIEVE the strength of our nation lies with the individual and that each person’s dignity, freedom, ability and esponsibility must be honored.

I BELIEVE in equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity for all, regardless of race, creed, sex, age or disability.

I BELIEVE free enterprise and encouraging individual initiative have brought this nation opportunity, economic growth and prosperity.

I BELIEVE government must practice fiscal responsibility and allow individuals to keep more of the money they earn.

I BELIEVE the proper role of government is to provide for the people only those critical functions that cannot be performed by individuals or private organizations, and that the best government is that which governs least.

I BELIEVE the most effective, responsible and responsive government is government closest to the people.

I BELIEVE Americans must retain the principles that have made us strong while developing new and innovative ideas to meet the challenges of changing times.

I BELIEVE Americans value and should preserve our national strength and pride while working to extend peace, freedom and human rights throughout the world.

FINALLY, I believe the Republican Party is the best vehicle or translating these ideals into positive and successful principles of government.

Black Gold

I have been watching the series Black Gold. I’ve learned a lot more from it than I ever did from Dallas. The biggest thing is that if you tell those West Texas roughnecks there is big pot of gold if the job is done before time they are going to move hell if they have to get to it.

There is lot of money to be passed around like to the companies selling drill pipe, drill bits, drill mud, etc. When the guys get a day off they party and party hard. Bar owners, hotel owners benefit. Let’s face it. So do cathouses.

Drilling in ANWAR may not pump much into the economy of NC but would in Alaska. Drilling in the Rockies may not benefit DC’s economy but just look at what it would do for states like Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado. There is a lot of money to be made not just by “BIG OIL.”

The Viking rig brought a well in a little over 2 weeks. They were pumping oil at the rate 300 barrels a day. At today’s pricing the well would bring in $16,000,000 a year. These guys were not working for BIG OIL they were working for a company like the fictious Ewing oil-a bunch of wildcatters. They were taking a lot of risk with their capital.

I think this show needs to be mandatory viewing for Nazi Pelsoi and the MSM because it shows the best of the can do American spirit. Get government out of the way and let those guys DRILL.

Be kind to your kids. They'll be choosing your nursing home.

rick...

I too have been watching that series and find it fascinating how much money it costs to darn near everything, prior to even pumping one barrel of oil.

45 Communist Goals for America http://www.nationmakers.com/com_goals.htm

The 3 rigs are going to

The 3 rigs are going to dig 3 wells each in 50 days. If each one is as sucessful as the first them that should net them $144,000,000 a year. I know they have overhead like royalities to pay but if thye only walked away with half of the 144 mil that wouldn't be too shabby.

On another thought, maybe Nazi and the MSM don't need to watch it. They would be having a fit if they saw where someone walked away with that much money. They don't considered the risk they took.

Be kind to your kids. They'll be choosing your nursing home.

I guess I will consol myself with a song, an ode to the great Harry Chapin, who died on this date in 1981...

Harry got in his car
And turned the key
Started up and headed up the L.I.E.
Too cheap to get a real car
Had a Volkswagon Rabbit
And that put an end to
Harry's cheap habit
Cause the trucker couldn't stop
So the driver just took aim
And when he hit Harry
Harry burst into flames
You're dead now Harry
And you can't come back
You'd still be alive if
you drove a Cadillac

I am not at liberty to divulge all the reasons Mitt should not be the VP pick, but I can mention I thought he was too quick to raise taxes.

The socialized healthcare thing wasn't very smart either.  I know it wasn't his idea, but he did tout its implementationin the debates.

Uh, oh, all the Global

Uh, oh, all the Global Warming douchebags have more evidence to ignore.

Oh, what sad times are these when passing ruffians can say `nee' at will to old ladies.

Romney or Palin seem to fill McCain's needs

You are correct as to Mitt Romney's assets. But: would evangelicals and Pentecostals accept him as a vice presidential nominee or warm to his candidacy and role on the ticket? Many conservatives have a problem accepting McCain; his VP pick ought to be able to warm up the base.

Bobby Jindal is four years from a VP slot and perhaps eight from a presidential candidacy. Louisiana really does need him. Now. He should be a "surrogate," someone who can help McCain, which the clumsy and politically slow-witted Phil Gramm could not.

Forget people with mostly Congressional experience, not John McCain’s need. He needs a charismatic, articulate running mate, somebody who can respond to policy and personal critiques of McCain and Republicans generally, with wit and style, making points without alienating voters. Most other present or former governors fail McCain's needs, except for Romney and Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska.

The party convention schedule lets McCain name a choice after Obama. McCain’s pick should be a good counter move. Obama likely will pick Bill Richardson, but could prefer someone else. A woman other than Hillary Clinton? That pick would continually raise the question, why not Hillary? I think Hillary is a stronger possibility than others do, despite Bill’s presence. Obama will do what is expedient to become President and choosing Hillary would be that. (Lenin said that "There are no morals in politics; there is only expedience." Obama practices what Lenin believed.)

Who's strong among conservative Hispanics, if Obama does not choose Richardson? As much as one likes the Diaz-Balart brothers and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, they too bring Congressional experience, not McCain's running-mate need.

As to women, Gov. Palin does not have much experience, but, from what I have read, will bring much to the ticket. She also could educate McCain on the difference between a few acres of ANWR, the summer resort for billions of mosquitoes, and the Grand Canyon. (I have backpacked in the Brooks Range and love the wilderness as much as anyone, but reason directs the economic use of a few acres of ANWR.)

Obama's experience, or lack of it, will be a factor, but far from the chief one in the election. He is wrong on nearly every issue and challenge facing the United States. In his promised Utopia, the left will rule and the right shall acquiesce.

I like Palin, but how does

I like Palin, but how does picking an Alaskan help win states like PA, OH, FL, etc? I think it might be a swing-state politico if not Romney.

Palin

I'm not convinced that VPs bring in states anyways.  But Palin should continue to toil in AK and keep building her credentials and record.  VP?  That's beneath her.  The Presidency, on the other hand...

If so, why is Fast Eddie Rendell and Bobby Casey on The Hopeful Changer's short list?

He thinks the gun-clinging bible thumping elderly racist white folk in PA will vote for him if Rendell/Casey is the VP.

I have no empirical evidence to prove you wrong, bro, other than that seems to be a common philosophy for picking VP.

No one votes for VP

But will anyone in PA be voting FOR Rendell or Casey?  I doubt it.  No one votes for VP (by that I mean people are focused on the President and not who he picks as a running mate).  I voted for Dole in spite of his selection of Kemp.

Sure, it is a common philosophy, but does it actually WORK?

Roger, I trust your judgment here in that you are on the ground in PA and know what is going on there inside and out, but it seems to me (I flew in and out of Philly one year and that is my sole exposure to PA) that PA is so Leftist, at least at the population centers, that Obama could pick Tony Knowles (former Dem gov of AK) as his running mate and they would vote for him.
