For general sports-related discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Is Brett Favre coming out of retirement to play for somebody other than the Packers?
Three days after a conference call with Packers team officials in which quarterback Brett Favre emphatically expressed his desire to play in 2008, Favre on Friday formally asked by letter for his unconditional contractual release, sources close to Favre and the team said.
What do you think is behind his decision to return? Would this be good for him and the game? Do you think other teams will take him, and, if so, who?

July 12, 2008 - 10:19 ET by ricklailThe Sporting News has picked the Jawja Dawgs to win it all. That maybe a good sign for your Gators-the SP jinx.
My daughter and son in law come in last Thursday from Pensacola. When he got up on Friday morning he was wearing a DOOK shirt in my house. The nerve of some people. They left this morning going back home. My wife found the shirt in with our dirty laundry. It is mine now. I am going to burn it, video it, and put it on You Tube.
Be kind to your kids. They'll be choosing your nursing home.
Good morning, Rick
July 12, 2008 - 10:32 ET by BlondeThe temerity of that SIL. Good thing he'd already married your daughter, LOL.
Well, the Dawgs....I agree, the jinx may get them, if we don't get them first, ha! Did you see the post last weekend...Gators Wear Denim Shorts?

I am not going to have much
July 12, 2008 - 12:41 ET by ricklailI am not going to have much to cheer for this year. The Heels will still be crummy. Carolina is a b-ball school and that is where the big bucks are spent. The game in J-ville will decide the east champ. Demin shorts? Are they trying to be rednecks?

Well, when your team can't beat its biggest rival
July 12, 2008 - 12:49 ET by BlondeInsults are hurled.
The Dawgs, sartorial mavens, I'm sure, after a record of 2-15 against my Gators, came up with a real beauty....Gators Wear Jean Shorts.
And of course, the MsM got the story all bollixed up, as usual.
Quick witted, those Dawgs.

Holmgren has , what one
July 12, 2008 - 11:17 ET by scamoramaHolmgren has , what one more year, so if Favre gets his release, he can sign with Seattle and can back up Hassle-blecch.
Then he and Mikey can go out in a blaze of glory.
Brett Favor (erm, Favre) Needs To Grow Up
July 12, 2008 - 11:19 ET by Mister PricklyI'm from Wisconsin, and I, for one, am fed up with Favre's flip-flopping back and forth between 'I'm going to retire, I'm not going to retire'. He's been doing this for the past 4 or 5 years. The Packers need to cut him loose, let him go on to some other team, and see if THEY would put up with this kind of shenanigans. Enough is enough.
Mr. Prickly, I agree
July 12, 2008 - 11:29 ET by jefflebowskiThese guys just hate not getting all the attention. Remember when Michael Jordan retired from the NBA? In a few months, he was playing bad minor league baseball with network trucks following him around. Next thing? Back in the NBA.
They have enough money...it's the limelight that they can't give up. I'm sick of Favre too.

agree prickly
July 12, 2008 - 11:44 ET by candanceFavre has outgrown his prime and earned the nickname Captain Interception for a reason. I understand his love for the game but geez, coach a little league team or sumpin. There is a time and season for everything and it's time for Favre to retire.
IMO the Packers should just tell him, "you wanted to be off the team. we've already made plans to replace you. go on somewhere else."
Packers Aren't the Only Ones Victims of this Prima Donna

Interesting to note that the linked article posted a month ago stated St. Brett had an undisclosed conflict. It just might have been that he and his people knew the golf event he backed out of was scheduled at the same time Favre knew he was going to shaft the Packers.
He either has a screw loose or has been Machiavellian in staging this latest episode.
A MARRIAGE MADE IN HEAVEN
July 12, 2008 - 11:39 ET by CaringwhiteguyTwo gods in the minds of the media.
Favre should be Barack's running mate. He could flip when Barack flops.
The KC Star's Message Board...
July 12, 2008 - 12:15 ET by AgentAmericanThe Chiefs message board is a buzz of Favre talk. The Kansas City Chiefs have yet to earn the respect and achieve greatness that the Pittsburgh Steelers have rightfully earned from this Chiefs fan. Carl Peterson, the CEO and President of the team has worn out his welcome, and it wouldn't surprise me if he went after Favre.
It wouldn't help much except maybe to tutor or mentor Brodie Croyle. A weak offensive line would be useless even if Unitas was under center.
I remember when they signed Montana in the twilight of his career, and all of a sudden, the Chiefs were Super Bowl contenders (they did reach the AFC Title Game, which also began the Chiefs' embarassing playoff losing streak which stands to this day). Then, suddenly, he retired.

What did the Cubs get?
July 12, 2008 - 14:41 ET by CaringwhiteguyGreat debut for Rich Harden, recently acquired by the Cubs from the A's. 10 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings and left leading 7-0. Why the early departure then? Can his arm take over 100 pitches an outing? (they pulled him after 96 today) Have the Cubs gotten another Mark Prior?
CWG
July 12, 2008 - 22:14 ET by Noel SheppardCWG,
I hope not. I'm an A's fan that has met and spoken to Rich several times. :-)
Sadly, he's injury prone. Very. Great guy, though. ns
Bobby Murcer
July 12, 2008 - 18:31 ET by Gat New YorkThe Yankee legend Bobby Murcer also passed away today from cancer.
Bobby came up to the Yankees to be Mickey Mantle’s replacement. He was a shortstop that was converted to a centerfielder – much the same way Mickey was converted to replace Joe DiMaggio.Bobby had two stints with the Yankees before retiring and becoming a long time Yankee broadcaster.
He not only represented the best parts of the Yankee tradition, he was one the truly decent and caring people in all of baseball.
In August, 1979 Murcer was asked to eulogize his best friend Thurman Munson who had just perished in an airplane crash. He said: “The life of a soul on earth lasts longer than his departure. He lives on in your life and the life of all others who knew him.”
A shaken Murcer then flew out to play in the scheduled Baltimore game. His manager wanted him to take the game off but Murcer refused.
Murcer won the game by bringing the Yankees back from a 4–0 deficit with a 3-run homerun in the 7th inning, and then hit a walk-off 2-run single in the bottom of the 9th.
It was that kind of commitment and courage that cemented Bobby Murcer as one of the great all time Yankee legends and just a great human being.
The only team that wants him
July 13, 2008 - 01:22 ET by BigSky1970The only team that wants him to come back is Dallas, so they can build on that 0-9 record Favre has at Lambeau Field against the Cowboys. :)
