For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Should the government takeover/bailout the two largest federal mortgage insurers?
Alarmed by the growing financial stress at the nation’s two largest mortgage finance companies, senior Bush administration officials are considering a plan to have the government take over one or both of the companies and place them in a conservatorship if their problems worsen, people briefed about the plan said on Thursday. The companies, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, have been hit hard by the mortgage foreclosure crisis...Now, as housing prices decline further and foreclosures grow, the markets are worried that Fannie and Freddie themselves may default on their debt. Under a conservatorship, the shares of Fannie and Freddie would be worth little or nothing, and any losses on mortgages they own or guarantee — which could be staggering — would be paid by taxpayers.
Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson just said that this is nonsense, but rumors are flying around Wall Street that this is imminent. What say you, NewsBusters? Is this a good idea to shore up the lending industry, or should troubled financial entities be allowed to fail in order to discourage risky behavior in the future?

That said, if the goverment is going to involve themselves even more, it should be that their salaries be confiscated and contributed to bail out these two institutions.

July 11, 2008 - 10:53 ET by SouthJersey1953Since when did it become the responsibility of the Government (us) to bail out everyone that makes a bad investment?
When I make a mistake, I don't expect anyone else to 'fix' it for me.
Does anyone take responsiblities for their own actions anymore?
Its not that simple.
July 11, 2008 - 12:44 ET by Ten7sIts not that simple. F-mac/F-may hold trillions in mortgages, but tens or hundreds of trillions in credit derivatives are based on these mortgages. Right now, write-downs on those CDOs, CDSs, etc. are expected to eventually be to 1.6 trillion, so far they've written-down about 500 billion. If F-mac and F-may can't back their bad mortgages, the expected write-downs would increase (at a bare minimum) by a factor of 10. And these credit derivatives are in virtually every portfolio and 401K/pension plan. I hope you can imagine what this means.
Bad business
July 11, 2008 - 13:24 ET by River CityI agree. The same lousy business practices that caused the problems are still there. It is healthy for our economy for businesses like this to fail and I include Bear Stearns in that statement. The leadership that caused the problems will still be there to continue with failed practices. Let's get out of the way and let the marketplace do its thing. I thought libs liked Darwinism: survival of the fittest. Lets try it and I'm sure our economy and country will be better for it.

Taking a wee break from the golf course, Tiger Woods drives his new Mercedes into an Irish gas station.
An attendant greets him in typical Irish manner, unaware who the golf pro is...

As Tiger gets out of the car, two tees fall out of his pocket.
"So what are those things, laddie?" asks the attendant.
"They're called 'tees'," replies Tiger.

July 11, 2008 - 11:42 ET by ricklailThis is off subject but I had to tell you. You know how we make fun of all the FSU players that get into trouble with the law? Well it does not come out nationally because most don't considered East Carolina to be a threat to win a natioanl championship but they are having a lot of problems with players.
At the fireworks on the 4th I talked with a friend of mine who is the resource officer at the local high school. On the last day of school he had to arrest a football player that was headed to ECU on scholarship for this season on charges of robbing students pocketbooks in the lockerrooms. Just this morning on the radio I heard that Greenville (NC) police had arrested a star from JH Rose High for B&E that was on his way to ECU this fall to play. This is not all of the incidents but I think I am going to lay off FSU crooks for a while.

I never really thought about that. What kind of damage could the 3 do with a veto or fillabuster proof Congress? It is chilling to think about it. Obama may make Chrissie's leg tingle but he sends chills up and down my spine.
The Dems are saying it would take 10 years to get the oil out of the ground if we started today. To me there is the real hoax. I have been watching Black Gold. They were pumping oil within about 3 weeks of the start of drilling. I understand that if they could go after the shell oil in the western states they could be pumping in less than 6 months.

July 11, 2008 - 12:11 ET by NL207Obama, Pelosi and Reid are opposed to drilling for other reasons. They purposely distort all of: how much recoverable oil there is in any find, how long it will take to tap, and how much effect it will have on prices; in order to delude the public into accepting their policy.
case in point: As you have obsereved any new oil well can be in production within a few days to few weeks of an oil strike. Pelosi, et. al. deceive the puiblic about this by telling the public it takes 10 years to get an oil field into full production. [a large field will take 15 years to reach peak] While this is true, it does not describe the true picture. In a few short months oil will start to flow from new production. Within a year or two, significant production will be coming from the new field. In the years leading up to peak, prodigious amounts, but still less than peak production will be occurring. It is this that Pelosi is concealing from the public.

Let's see now, the government run quasi-private institutions responsible for setting lending standards to buy packaged mortgages from banks is having problems with people who had no business buying a home in the first place defaulting on loans they guaranteed. And now they want a bailout by the taxpayer. NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OVER MY DEAD LIFELESS BODY!!!!!!!!!!!
Not everyone has the mindset to be homeowner, no amount of equal outcome arguments is going to change that fact of life. What these two institutions did was to buy into the equality of outcome argument and now we have the predictable outcome, default.
They can go sell bonds like everyone else to raise money and cover their losses. If they had any brains at all, they would on a case by case basis review each loan in default or in late payment to determine IF the mortagee has the ability to actually make the loan payments at the current prevailing interest rate with a new fixed 30 year mortgage. IF they can't, the occupants need to move out and rent a place that is appropriate to their income. It's called Equality of Choice!

Joke of the Day
One day God was looking down at Earth and saw all of the rascally behavior that was going on. So He called one of His angels and sent the angel to Earth for a time.
When the angel returned, he told God, 'Yes, it is bad on Earth; 95% are misbehaving and only 5% are not.'
God thought for a moment and said, 'Maybe I had better send down a second angel to get another opinion.'
So God called another angel and sent him to Earth for a time.
When that angel returned she went to God and said, 'Yes, it's true. The Earth is in decline; 95% are misbehaving, but 5% are being good.'
God was not pleased. So He decided to e-mail the 5% that were good, because he wanted to encourage them, and give them a little something to help them keep going.
Do you know what the e-mail said? Okay, I was just wondering....... I didn't get one either.

Positive story about Vietnam Vet
July 11, 2008 - 14:16 ET by Carl KolchakHere is a link about a Vietnam Vet you probably won't catch from the MSM, because this Vet is actually proud to be an American and a former soldier. He is also a Democrat as well. He went back to visit Vietnam. The MSM probably wouldn't like his positive attitude about being an American, but here are some quotes from the article.
"Watching the crowds of people waiting in line for travel visas — many wanting to come to the U.S. — Mayo said he was struck with how lucky he was to be an American.
“When I stood there on our last day in Vietnam and saw that U.S. flag flying, I was just overwhelmed with the sense that ‘damn, I am a citizen of the United States.’” Mayo said.
Outside of the consulate, however, Mayo said he was well aware the flags were not American but that of the country he remembers fighting against.
“I never thought I would be bothered by their flag. I am as open-minded as the day is long, and realize it is their country not mine. But it did hurt and I felt a certain pain I can’t explain,” Mayo said."
And then this quote.
“The South Vietnamese government may have screwed up the situation, the U.S. government may have screwed up the situation; but the American soldier didn’t,” Mayo said. “The American soldiers got it right.”
I would probably add that the MSM screwed up the situation with their reporting, especially their reporting on the Tet Offensive.
Vietnam Vets are great people and have been villified and stereotyped too long.

Disproving abortion
July 11, 2008 - 15:38 ET by KC MulvilleI will never understand this.
http://www.breitbart.tv/?p=129023
The legal basis of the pro-abortion theory is that women have the right to define, by themselves, whether the fetus they are carrying is a full human being or not. Yet this mother is being charged for abusing a corpse, but it's the corpse of the fetus that her own daughter was carrying, and that the mother forced her to abort.
In logic, one way to disprove an argument is to show how it leads to absurdity. Plainly, the legal theory behind abortion, and the legal theory behind charging this woman with anything, are in clear conflict. To be consistent with abortion policy, she shouldn't have been charged with anything. But clearly, what she did was reprehensible.
Between the absurdity of Obama's defense of partial-birth abortion (basically: if we prevented partial-birth abortions, it would disprove all abortions) to cases like these ... you wonder how pro-abortionists claim any rationality at all.
