For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: how bad is it for Congressional Republicans?

The outlook for the GOP is so grim that party leaders have readily conceded there is no chance they can regain control of the Senate in 2008, even though Democrats' current majority is slim, 51-49. "If you have an R in front of your name, you better run scared," said Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.), chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, who says the party will do well if it holds its losses to three or four seats.

Democrats and the media -- as if there's a difference! -- are talking about winning a filibuster-proof majority next January which would give a President Obama -- heaven forbid! -- free rein to advance his agenda. Is this possible, or are press members trying to scare Republicans from the polls thereby manufacturing a self-fulfulling prophecy?

That's why Republicans won't do so well...they don't have leaders with any chutzpah. They've been beaten into submission by people who want to advance an agenda and they don't fight back.

Has anyone noticed all of the non coverage of the removal of yellow cake uranium from Iraq?  No worries, it was only 550 metric tons of refined uranium.  No WMD in Iraq folks.  Move along.  Nothing to see here.

Good Morning, Blonde

I was shocked when I read the article on the AP wire.  Not that they found what they had been looking for, but the fact that I hadn't seen it anywhere.  The Republicans, especially the POTUS, should be on live TV shouting this out loud.   This flies in the face of every Democrat who have beat up President Bush for years because there were no WMD's.  This is the definitive proof that they needed, and there is nary a whisper in the news.

another groovy email today:

Subject: Why is flooding from rivers is different than flooding from a lake?
All good questions. Maybe because the mid-western people are self
sufficient? Maybe, once more, these people will rebuild and resettle
before
the people of New Orleans quit complaining about the lack of Federal
support? Even though Katrina was years ago? Notice also that the media
doesn't seem to care about the other areas in Texas and Mississippi that
Katrina destroyed?

A couple questions from The National Review:

Where are all of the Hollywood celebrities holding telethons asking for
help in restoring Iowa and helping the folks affected by the floods?

Where is all the media asking the tough questions about why the federal
government hasn't solved the problem? Asking where the FEMA trucks (and
trailers) are?

Why isn't the Federal Government relocating Iowa people to free hotels
in Chicago?

When will Spike Lee say that the Federal Government blew up the levees
that failed in Des Moines?

Where are Sean Penn and the Dixie Chicks?

Where are all the looters stealing high-end tennis shoes and big screen
television sets?

When will we hear Governor Chet Culver say that he wants to rebuild a
"vanilla" Iowa, because that's the way God wants it?

Where is the hysterical 24/7 media coverage complete with reports of
cannibalism?

Where are the people declaring that George Bush hates white, rural
people?

How come in 2 weeks, you will never hear about the Iowa flooding ever
again?

That, my friend, is beautiful.  My wife is from Sioux City, and I'll be retiring to the "vanilla state" in a few years.

OS...on your great link to the yellow cake, I had heard about this find somewhere quite awhile back, not on television though, most likely here on the internet somewhere...one thing about it though, I understand your point about the President and others being silent about this, I have been frustrated for a long time, but I see they have their reasons I suppose to get it out safely, I know there has to be a lot more they are staying mum about, most likely always will, Syria is another example with Israel blowing away whatever was really being done or store there not to far back, as far as I am concerned, it had to do with Iraq and WMDs too..

I also was going to mention...no yellow-cake...ask Joe Wilson...but I did see where he and his partner is crime did finally get mentioned at the very end of the article...barely that is...

Here is an interesting article about Joe Wilson, French Connection and yellow-cake...it is from The American Thinker...pretty eye-opening.

It sounds like in this article this yellow cake uranium was already known and accounted for:

"U.N. inspectors documented and safeguarded the yellowcake, which had

the official said."

Please tell me we didn't go to war to go after some yellow cake uranium that the UN was already guarding.

Hey. I'm just saying. For some people, making sure that some yellowcake (that had already been accounted for and secured by the United Nations for about 15 years) got safely into Canadian hands might be worth waging war and losing the lives of thousands of troops.

I'm really getting tired of this

If you're a Republican you better run scared? What is that supposed to mean? Why are we electing congress critters whose best advice is to run scared from the other party?

How would a company stay in business if the owner had that mentality toward the competition. What if a pastor of a church said, oh we're the minority in this city we better run scared.

Is the GOP actively trying to annoy voters?

commonwealth, we do have a good Republican candidate, Jeff Beatty, a former military officer and intelligence agent who is challenging John F. Kerry!  I've sent him money and will most certainly vote for him in November.  New blood is needed in DC!

Simply because it appears we are a one-party state (and the laughingstock of the country!) does not necessarily mean it is so.  In the past we have elected several Republican governors and I'm hoping enough citizens are FED UP with the terrible representation offered us by Kerry and Kennedy (and the shameful conduct of Delahunt!) and will vote for BEATTY!

Although I love Rush, and I now  might even be to the right of Rush; I saw Bob Barr on ABC today, and I dont care if its a vote for Obama, but im voting for him.   If Rush is right, and the country is mostly conservative  and We here at NB and else where all ask "what can We do?"   IMHO   this is the answer.   WE might not win this fight...but maybe over the next few years the Republicans can get their act together and We could support them again....

Paul

Paul,

With Wimbledon in a rain delay, let me play your game. Let's say you vote for Barr, and Obama wins by a margin of victory that McCain likely would have overcome if not for Barr's presence. Let's add to the equation Obama getting a big enough coattail to get the Dems 60 senators. Then, in the next two years, Obama gets his universal healthcare plan passed, as well as a carbon cap and trade program.

As these will both be pieces of legislation that much like Social Security and Medicare will probably become permanent fixtures in our governmental system, was voting for Barr hoping for a stronger Republican Party in the future a good move? Or, did it assist in the creation of two new socialist programs that will harm ourselves, our children, and our grandchildren for decades nay centuries to come? ns

paul, your biggest concern...

should be the potential retirement of the older leftist members of the supreme court, who in my mind are holding out for a dem. victory, in light of this there is 'nothing' that barr brings to the table that could or should distract from voting against bho. just my opinion.

Exactly

Right on, Larry.

Ginsburg (age 75) and Stevens (age 88) will definitely retire or pass on during the next President's tenure. You can guarantee they will be replaced by two more Ginsburgs, if you elect Obama, or have the possibility of maybe a Roberts/Alito and a Thomas, if McCain gets elected. Yes, we might get a Kennedy or a Souter, but at least it's not guaranteed, and it's still better than two Gisburgs!

Joel, the only problem with

Joel, the only problem with that is, if McCain has a huge Democratic majority Senate, he is way too likely to "reach across the aisle" and accept instructions on who would be a "confirmable" candidate.

And forget that nonsense about confirming on the basis of ability. It will be done strictly by "Living Constitution"ideology (read: someone with a penchant for legislating from the bench.)

Combined with McCain's disdain for the right and penchant for working with Democrats, I'm not convinced he would do any better.

Taking a chance that maybe, hopefully, cross your fingers, McCain could possibly appoint a good judge even as he passes cap and trade while granting amnesty - that's not enough incentive to win my vote.

The "better than Obama" argument doesn't have much footing when it comes to McCain.

SCOTUS

John Paul Stevens, dissenter in the gun ban ruling, was appointed by a Republican.  PLEASE understand that one of the biggest gambles a President can make is the selection of a justice to the Supreme Court.

Look at Bush's old man.  Upside: Clarence Thomas!  Downside: David Souter...

I'd argue that Reagan only scored with Scalia, and achieved that by promoting Rehnquist to Chief Justice.

Eisenhower once said that the three biggest mistakes he made as President were all sitting on the Supreme Court.

WASHINGTON — Louisiana may be losing seniority in Congress, but two
state Democratic delegation members are gaining strength through what
has become the swing caucus in the House: The Blue Dog Coalition.
The muscle of the 47 fiscally and socially conservative Democrats is
best explained in the sheer numbers. With the Democrats now holding a
37-vote lead in the House, the Blue Dogs have become the powerful
voting bloc that can push legislation forward or stop it in its tracks.
CRAWFISH NOTE: What is it about this so-called blue
dog democrats which are so-called conservatives socially and fiscally?
They are called in by Pelosi-Reid and told how it will be…you vote the
secular socialist line or else you will be treated as a political
leper. Got that bro? Ya voting with demo-liberals Mary and Willy J. 95%
of the time … dahhhling. No tax cuts, no fiscal reform, no ending of
pork, no drilling in ANWAR, no ending a bizillion useless
investigations, no confirming judges, no tax reform…no nuttin for ya
dogs.
Get the message, you blue dog suckers… you are not and will not be
accepted! Move to the Party that accepts you and that is NOT the Party
of Klinton-Teddy-BHO and the other strident socialists.
Don’t depend on voters NOT to read your voting record. They will, we have. It sux.

As for SCOTUS picks, McCain is going to be facing a very hostile Senate. His incessant (and not a little annoying) penchant for "going along to get along" will pay dividends here - for his "friends" across the aisle.

My guess is the best we could expect McCain to do is select a moderate, milquetoast RINO candidate. After all, we certainly don't want to offfffffend the other side, now do we?

It Is Indeed An Attempt At Self-fullfing Prophecy

That small group with a big megaphone - the MSM - is rattling around in a relatively empty barrel, as is usual in early July of a presidential election year. Look at the John Kerry campaign in '04. The oil/gas crisis is building fast, and people are asking "how come?" It's because of the democrats, and as people demand more real answers as to why we can't drill for oil and relieve our economic problems until such time as we actually have alternative energies, the problem for the dems is going to grow. Elections can turn in the blink of an eye, and that usually happens just before the election occurs.

It was late September in '94 when Newt Gingrich came out with the Contract With America. Long settled democratic incumbents saw their large poll advantages reverse overnight, and the Republicans won the house and the senate.

There's too much time ahead to be predicting a filibuster proof senate for President Obama.

It is as bad as they say

If everything was just peachy keen, the GOP would not have lost three special elections in a row. People are not happy with the way the economy is going and high gas prices and deserved or not, the majority of the public believes the buck stops at the POTUS.

Some folks can dish it out but cannot take it

This Congress

If the Republicans would start, right now, talking about how this Democrat-controlled Congress has been in power for 18 months, and gas prices have gone from below $2 to above $4, and inflation has gone from x to y, and unemployment has gone from x to y, and so on, all under their "leadership", and keep hammering that over and over on every talk show and every interview, I believe we could win back at least the Senate, and close the gap in the House.

Why don't they do that? What is wrong with them?

it will be as bad as we allow the msm make it. we allowed them to select john mccain, bad mouth everything conservative, and they are close to destroying America. we cannot allow them to crown hussein oboma king of America.

Well, it would certainly

Well, it would certainly help Republican chances if they actually ran against the failed records of Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi and ran proud, conservative candidates.  After all, does this country need more of the same no growth, energy dependent, blame America, slow, but certain road to communism that Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi have given us the last couple of years?  Compare gas and food prices in the days leading up to the November 2006 election with the current gas prices.  Seems to me that Reid, Pelosi and their socialist drones in Congress should bear the responsibility for the current situation.  Fight back with confident, conservative solutions rather than a bunch of "moderate" weenies who run as Democrat-lite.

Independence Day

A thought for this great holiday weekend of America's.

REPUBLIC: A commonwealth; a state in which the exercise of the sovereign power is lodged in representatives elected by the people.

Thomas Paine:

"These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis shrink from the service of their country....Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered ...If there must be trouble, let it be in my day, that my child may have peace."

Patriot Paine was speaking of picking up arms and fighting for his country. There are other ways with the trials that face us now. Live up to the courage of your convictions. Have the strength to do as your conscience tells you you must do for our country.

However you see it, however you feel, do what you think is the right thing for our great country. Each of us is a leader in our own way.

I don't know why

I have no clue why the Republicans should be worried, except they have no clue about how to win this election.  I may be the eternal optimist but, I don't believe I could stand having to defend the Democrats in Congress.  They took over, 2 years ago, and look what they've done.  The energy problem is uniquely theirs and the Republicans should be hitting them on it every day.  It's the perfect issue since, as the price of gas goes up, everyone is hurt.  If, as people paid for their gas, they wer constantly reminded to say thank you to Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, the Democrats would be quaking in their boots.

As a Republican, I'm certainly now proud of what those morons did once they got their power back.  They tried to out-Democrat the Democrats and you just can't do that.  The Democrats are pros and this government scam, they did it for years and are willing to do whatever it takes to do it for more years.  However, it's on the record that Republicans want to drill, and a majority of the people want to drill, and the Democrats are on record as saying it's a bad idea to drill.  My friends, it doesn't get any more perfect than that.  If you want to become energy independent, elect a Republican that will do everything it's going to take and not a Democrat who is going to leave half the necessary items off the table.

Can someone tell me where I'm wrong here?

Frankly, Noel, I think the Republicans are going about it the wrong way.  McCain is dead weight.  The Republicans should have learned the right lessons from 2006...run actual conservatives and you might win Congress.  If the Republicans win Congress, does it really matter whether Obama or McCain is President?  If the Republicans lose Congress, does it really matter whether Obama or McCain is President?

Fitz, I agree

I will vote in November for conservatives.  I won't vote for McCain for many reasons.

The current Republican party has shown itself to be incompetent to run the government.  They ran and were elected on conservative principles and then spent money like democrats.  They let the left push them around and monopolize the issues.  They did nothing to defend themselves when the left made outlandish statements.

From what I have seen of McCain's campaign this far, it is equally inept.  Why am I not surprised.

Noel, I considered SCOTUS appointments.

And that would probably make a good #4, but I ommitted it due to the fact that, well, frankly, it isn't a very "sexy" political issue for most Americans. Sadly, most people today couldn't name two SCOTUS justices if their very lives hung on their answers.

Taxes, however, are something that most people deal with, save those the dems have managed to remove from the tax rolls. I chose the FT simply because I think it is really begining to gain some traction in many areas of the country.

As an FT supporter, I have been heavily involved in promoting the idea and spreading the word. Perfect it isn't, but it is far and away better than the current system, which I believe to be broken beyond any possibility of repair.

Aside from the FT, I have to honestly say that I think McCain is a bit of a loose cannon. He has a nasty habbit of flipping off conservatives from time to time, which is why he is having trouble securing their support, even with Obama as an opponent.

Senator Ensign is part of the problem

The senator is supposed to be getting Republicans elected and all he can do is predict doom?  What a dope!

And as a big time enviromentalist, Ensign is probably resisting the one issue that could get lots of republicans elected - more oil and more nuclear NOW!

No issue gets voters more up-in-arms that pocket book issues.

The republicans need to ride this one all the way to victory.

The democratic response that more oil and refineries won't impact gas prices is stunningly stupid.

More drilling might not bring gas prices down to $1.50 - but it would definitely keep them from going up to $15.00 a gallon.

Support McCain - a 70% conservative is far better than a 100% Marxist.  Obama will say anything to get elected.  Don't believe it!
