For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Cindy McCain as the new Lady Di?

The woman who wants to be the next Republican First Lady pledged today to expand her humanitarian work if she makes it into the White House, taking inspiration from the late Diana, Princess of Wales. Speaking ahead of a political fundraiser in London tonight, Cindy McCain said that she felt "very honoured" to serve on the boad of the Halo Trust, the Anglo-American anti-landmine charity endorsed by Diana and which organised her controversial walk through an Angolan minefield in 1997, the year of her death. Speaking to The Times, Mrs McCain said of Diana: "She was (a) great inspiration to me and to the British people as well. She was a remarkable person and had a loving heart.”

First, is this a calculated political move or a genuine expression of emotion? Regardless, how will this play on Main Street? Given the reverence Lady Di received from Americans on both sides of the aisle, is this a great way for the McCains to counter the Obamas' makeover as the new Jack and Jackie? Or will American media just tear apart the notion that Cindy is anything like Diana?

And the spouse?

Can you see John McCain as Prince Charles? Oh, ears not big enough? He can always "cross the aisle" and borrow Obama's. Maybe as Dodi Fayed? Oh, pocketbook not big enough? Wait, unlike Diana, Cindy isn't the gold digger. . . .

In this fractured fairytale McCain is the gold digger.

Tear apart is an understatement. Think being walled into a pregnant wolverine's den.

It appears the US Supreme Court is filled by morons. I wonder which 5 voted in the majority on this one. hmmm. Could it be the same 5 that voted in the majority on the infamous Military Tribunal suit. When will Congress do its duty in regards to judges who go outside their Constitutional mandates?

"Republicans always get a huge pass on the racist issue. Huck is just another example. Provided they don't start up with the N word, they seem able to pander directly to the racist vote."

I don't see any reason to believe Congress will remove them

That is why I have advocated the remedy at the link below.

Wait a minute...

If the electorate is too lazy to demand Congress impeach/remove justices for shoddy work at the SCOTUS, what makes you think that elections for judges (even under a FL-like system) will work?

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

We will vote to throw the bums off the bench

First of all, I am not advocating that Justices be elected, I am saying that they should have the voters determine if they get another term or not, if not, then the President would appoint a new Justice in the same manner as he currently does.

Because Congress is always too afraid and too disorganized to act against the court.  I and other voters like me are not. We will vote to throw the bums off the bench.  All we would need is one more vote than the number cast to retain.

trying it again, no sigfile/distractions this time.

Here's an article. Here's a short version which says it all in the form of a graph. Here's a new article which says the $45.5 TRILLION on the graph should actually read SIXTY TRILLION. (Oops!) Here's what the CIA says regarding the entire planet combined, for context.

Again, can anyone here offer a fiscally sane explanation for just why this obviously essential, albeit largely unknown, "market" (and I use the term LOOSELY!!!!!) didn't exist before about 2000/2001. I was asking for an honest explanation, but I've lowered my expectations. After seeing 0 for this long despite repeated posts, I'll happily accept "honest sounding."

Sarc, what's your explanation?

“There are no easy answers' but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right.” - Ronald Reagan (1964 Republican Convention)

I've saved the graph in my bookmarks file under:

"Criminality."

One word is almost never enough for me, though, as you're all aware. Let me just say that I haven't seen any non-fishy explanations for a "market" growing that-big that-fast, even from those very few people who had heard of it. I think this "market" might explain the size of some investment bankers' salaries, though.

My agenda here is easier than explaining that stuff, though, because all I'm doing is rubbing TV financial "journalists" noses in a smelly story they should have been covering years-ago, if only because of the size of the "market." Which won't be losing those scare-quotes anytime soon when it comes to me, because stuff like this always scares the taxpayer in me.

Oh, and on the subject of biased media BS, Brit Hume called the socialist Bear Stearns bailout "a buyout, not a bailout" this morning, and I jumped on him already today, but I feel the need to pound his blatant bias again. No, said socialism wasn't & isn't any sort of "buyout," Brit. See the Fed's involvement for why, and quit slanting a story we all know would have had you screeching to the Heavens had the same exact thing happened during Slick Willie's term. 1 standard.

Sure looks like it to me!! It's unlikely to happen, but I hope the lawyers who brought it get nothing.

Of course the media will tear her apart, and accuse her of pandering.

Was very busy in Baghdad, apparently. (But I'm still waiting for any honest-sounding explanation on the money-post, which is much less likely to get interest than Lara's various sexual partners while off-duty.)

On Lara Logan

Hey, that just goes to show that she 1) wasn't working THAT hazardous a duty and 2) had LOTS of spare time!

All that time and effort and money to get her to that part of the world, and she hasn't bothered to visit, say, LSA Anaconda (for example and as far as I know).

The First, and Last, Battleground of the Cold War, Korea...

may be over.  The US has decided to begin normalization of relations with North Korea.

The North Koreans can still hose the agreement as they have done before, but if not, we may be looking at the end of the decades long US/North Korean military standoff, thanks to the leadership of George W. Bush.

expand her humanitarian work

I have witnessed this all of my life yet encountered another example of the uncredited success/attitudes of ordinary people.

If one were to play poker in similar fashion to how libs expect one to live life, how many hands dealt to you would not be folded? Those in this link are playing theirs with the intent upon winning. And they are not seeking handouts in order to be successful.

It's a damn shame the individual efforts of ordinary people such as these are firewalled, imagine the change if people believed anything is possible.

Remember the Countrywide Six?

Who forgot to write about the advances in Iraq?

If bin Laden is presumed innocent, why not just shoot him there?

→ Newsweek - racist

Was just listening to Rush, and a caller brought his attention to Dahlia Lithwick's column about the Supreme Court.

"All the judges are white"

Clarence Thomas might be a little surprised.  Of course, we know what she meant by her racist comment.

How did THAT get past any editor??

yeah - they usually catch

yeah - they usually catch all the bald faced lies before they go to print:)!

→ That's easy sarc

Newsweek gave a nod and a wink to Lithwick's belief that if you are anything but liberal, you have no right to be called black.  IOW "You best be gettin' back to the plantation now Clarence"

They would have been skittish with "Uncle Tom" coming from a white woman, but this is strictly liberal racial hatred.

But failing to think of one. Which sorta reminds me of another post in this very Open Thread...

I checked out the graph earlier this morning.  Inasmuch as I know nobody who holds this kind of paper, I'm afraid it's underwritten somewhere east of Iran and well into China.

Small wonder the Government is printing up a fresh wheelbarrow of $300 billion.  We'll never learn Mandarin fast enough to serve our new masters their tea.

  • LYDSEXICS UNTIE

Interesting

Interesting how a country with a GDP in the BILLIONS can reasonably be expected to finance another with a GDP in the TRILLIONS.

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

Yeah. It's almost like

Straying from Constitutional limits, such as what government is allowed to do & what 'money' is allowed to be, has consequences which look kinda dishonest. The problem started under FDR, but government schools don't tend to teach it.
