For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: McCain calls Obama's energy policy Carteresque...

Speaking in Houston, where many energy companies are headquartered, McCain said of Obama, "He supports new taxes on oil producers. He wants a windfall-profits tax on oil, to go along with the new taxes he also plans for coal and natural gas. "If the plan sounds familiar, it's because that was President Jimmy Carter's big-idea tool - and a lot of good it did us. "I'm all for recycling - but it's better applied to paper and plastic than to the failed policies of the 1970s."

How do you like this strategy? Could high energy prices be a major campaign issue in November, and one that McCain can decisively win? With 67% of Americans favoring offshore oil drilling -- including 57% of Democrats and 60% of Independents! -- and energy prices now squarely in the minds of voters, could this really make Election Day 2008 look more and more like 1980 with the edge going to McCain?

Or will this strategy fail as Obama and his media minions cast McCain as doing the bidding for the big, bad oil companies?

Most of Obama's electorate

Most of Obama's electorate don't remember the Carter years and teh MSM will probably not go out on a limb to remind them.  This issue along with Obamas WOT fought as criminal issue might be enough to elect McCain.  Unless McCain screws it up.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Unless?

"Unless McCain screws it up."

What do you mean "unless"?  If McCain doesn't get it together, he is going to screw it up.  This should be like taking candy from a baby.  McCain needs to shove it into high gear.

might be too late for "unless"

I agree. McCain has been screwing it up at every level on every subject. He needs to act on some of these things where BHO is on the wrong side....Unfortunately (for us), he instead tries to shift more towards BHO......

What a bafoon. BHO is practically handing him the election but he won't take it.

and he sure wasn't too

"quick on his feet" to let that person in one of his latest town meetings feed him a great! tongue-in-cheek "I'm not proud of my country" lead - and totally ignore the political aspect that would have allowed him to expound on the greatness of our country - instead he AGREED with him!   OMG!

Then he wants the pay of CEOs in this free society to be REGULATED?!?!  And yes, today, no tomorrow re: drilling etc.....

The best thing he could do is select a conservative vice president running mate right now and let him do the talking from here on in!

Could be helpful

If they run this properly it should help to expose BHO.  And if McShame can get some debates going he should be able to take this and ram it down BHO's throat.  Barry does not do well without prepared speeches and coordinated meetings.  But I can see the Republicans blowing it again.

They are out of touch and don't appear to want to get in touch with the base.

What I would like to see

happen in the McCain campaign is for him to receive a few public speaking lessons!  And while they are at it, advise him to DROP the "my friends" - our country is looking for a LEADER, not a FRIEND!  I do not consider myself his "friend" - his constant use of the phrase only cheapens the word and its meaning.  If he is elected, he will be my PRESIDENT and I will respect him accordingly!  I believe the term "Fellow Americans" would be much more acceptable spoken by someone running for the office of president of the United States of America!

Push him to the ropes

Push him to the ropes and make him respond defensively. Don't let up for a second because making nice with the Democrats is what has caused the Republican slide. We get sucked into bi-partisanship and the Democrats knock us down with our own kindness and get their way every time.

The best approach is to tell the truth with a smile! Then let him try to explain it away.

Stop pulling my leg

Johnny Mc and Leibermann co-sponsored legislation recently to curtail all things related to energy use to turn the tide against manmade global warming -- now you want me to believe Johnny Mc wants to help me pay less for the energy I use?

I really don't think Johnny Mc has a clue about the economy. How high energy prices affect the economy and those of us peons in it who are not married to a rich woman, how energy bought in a market controlled by unstable men leading unstable, and sometimes downright dangerous, countries should be replaced with energy produced in and controlled by America, how subsidizing energy production can have unintended consequences (ethanol vs. food anyone?), how cancelling tariffs on foreign produced bio-fuels from non-threatening countries might help us now, and how drilling offshore in areas already surveyed could produce American oil in as little as 18 months.

No Johnny Mc will again apologize to BO. This time for not being as sensitive to the caribou as he should or not fully supporting quickly enough the rush to save the polar bear.  In the meantime, we pay $4.25 for regular at the pump and this winter heating oil will skyrocket and our Senators like Johnny Mc will be holding a hearing on changing the colors in a rainbow.

Very interesting indeed.  In the West we don't seem to give Zhukov a lot of the credit he deserves in my opinion.  He was the first to reach Berlin, and his counterattack at Moscow and then Stalingrad were brilliant moves which really changed the dynamics on the Eastern Front.  Chuikov I think was also a great Russian general that we don't hear to much about either from WW2.  War of 1812 is one that I really don't know as much as I should.  Some people say it was a tie, some people think the Canadians and the British won, and some think the Americans won.  Churchill's speech was brilliant, and for a time it was only the British fighting the Nazis.  I also find Joan of Arc a very remarkable woman in world history as well.

And it's not good:

Medical examinations of former terrorism suspects held by the U.S.
military at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, found
evidence of torture and other abuse that resulted in serious injuries
and mental disorders, according to a human rights group. Link

This is particularly troubling:

Seven were held in Abu Ghraib between late 2003 and summer of 2004, a
period that coincides with the known abuse of prisoners at the hands of
some of their American jailers. Four of the prisoners were held at
Guantanamo beginning in 2002 for one to almost five years. All 11 were
released without criminal charges

The part that blows your

Because the medical examiners did not have access to the 11 patients' medical histories prior to their imprisonment, it was not possible to know whether any of the prisoners' ailments, disabilities and scars pre-dated their confinement.

Good critical thinking!

But I hope you didn't stop reading at that paragraph, because looks what immediately follows:

However, doctors and mental health professionals stated they could link the prisoners' claims of abuse while in U.S. detention to injuries documented by X-rays, medical exams and psychological tests.

"The level of the time, thoroughness and rigor of the exams left me personally without question about the credibility of the individuals," said Dr. Allen Keller, one of the doctors who conducted the exams, in an interview with the AP. Physicians for Human Rights, an advocacy group based in Cambridge, Mass., that investigates abuse around the world and advocates for global health and human rights, did not identify the 11 former prisoners to protect their privacy. Seven were held in Abu Ghraib between late 2003 and summer of 2004, a period that coincides with the known abuse of prisoners at the hands of some of their American jailers. Four of the prisoners were held at Guantanamo beginning in 2002 for one to almost five years. All 11 were released without criminal charges.

The idea being if you dont have to produce any corpus delecti then you can say anything you darn well want.  There is no proof without the body or even identifying the "detainees".  Another problem is teh organization is pretty bogus and biased to begin with.  Apparently with this statement there is no doubt sos produce teh evidence?

The abuse of some prisoners by their American captors is well documented by the government's own reports. Once-secret documents show that the Pentagon and Justice Department allowed, at least for a time, forced nakedness, isolation, sleep deprivation and humiliation at both Guantanamo Bay Naval Base and at Abu Ghraib.

Telling Americans about the Windfall Bullsh*t Tax is a start, but he needs to get on with illustrating for Americans exactly how it affects their lives by cracking open an Economics 101 textbook and translating it (after reading it first and making sure he knows it). He needs to spend every waking minute (more than he's spending now) tearing up every plan presented by his opposition. Using some logic would certainly help.

I'm just saying that it makes more sense if he knows what's going on, versus repeating what the experts water down to him. Remember, he is the one who will be making the decisions if he is elected. May as well make him get used to it.

Most people,

Most people, even Dhimmicrats, understand the law of supply and demand. If McLame can articulate this properly so even a Democrat can understand it*, he'll win this issue:

- Explain that demand is high, supply is low.

- Explain that we are more dependent on foreign energy than we were 20 years ago.

- Explain that we have plenty of reserves, and offshore drilling can be done in an environmentally friendly matter. Explain that hurricanes Katrina and Rita caused no significant oil spillage.

- Ask how increasing the cost of doing business (windfall profits tax) will reduce the price of anything.

- Carter, Carter, Carter.

* Neal Boortz says, "You can take what most people know about economics, shove it up an ant's ass, and it will rattle around like a BB in a boxcar."

MSM - shaping all the perceptions you need to believe.

I take issue with one of your points

- Explain that demand is high, supply is low.

Demand is high and rising, but supply is high also. It's just that the US has passed laws that make it illegal for us to access most of our supply. The Saudi's love it and think that we must be morons.

The Chinese are building an Oil Platform just outside our territorial waters in the Gulph of Mexico. We however are precluded from doing the same. If we built an oil platform just outside of their territorial waters, they would have a conniption fit and might even declare war on us for doing so.

Hal Lindsey: Ruling Hamstrings President's Power to Protect Us

In what is being described only as a "major blow to the Bush
administration," the United States Supreme Court ruled yesterday that
the terrorists detained at the American detention center at Guantanamo
Bay are protected under the rights and guarantees of the U.S.
Constitution.

It is still impossible for me to fathom how something can be a
"major blow the U.S. administration's war effort" without somehow also
being a blow to the rest of us Americans.

Osama bin Laden declared war on all of America, not just
the Bush administration. Bush wasn't even in office when this occurred.
This ruling doesn't just hamstring the Bush administration's efforts to
protect us from unrelenting terrorists – it hamstrings every
administration to follow.

Now, before I go on, I am not for a moment advocating in favor of
watering down the Constitution. I am just unable to find where the
Constitution covers foreign combatants making war against the United
States.

If they are covered under the Fifth Amendment guarantees of due
process as U.S. citizens, one would think they would also be guilty of
treason under Article 3, Section 3 of the Constitution, which defines
treason against the United States as consisting "of levying war against
America."... More >>

Q. Is Panamanian born John McCain a "Natural Born Citizen"

Obama and Social Security

Did anybody notice Obama's weird social security tax policy. Concerned that we are not bringing in enough revenue, he is proposing to tax income over $250,000. This means that you get a payroll tax of roughly 12%* on income up to $102,000.** Then between 102K and 250K there is no tax. And then the tax kicks in again on income above 250K. A tax with a rate gap between 102 and 250. Bizarre.

* Yes, the employee only pays 6% and the employer pays the other 6%, but in reality, the employer's 6% is 6% less he is not paying the employee.

** The 102K cutoff just seems entirely arbitrary too, and any and all increases in this level are just as politically arbitrary.

<insert witty signature here>

Exactly Dr Liberty- There is no logical reason for Obamas plan

he's pandering pure and simple. He's discriminating against the poor and lower middle class as well as the rich and giving preferential treatment to the upper middle class. There is no good argument for what he does other than pure pandering.

Under his plan, everyone would pay in the same percentage of their income except for the upper middle class. That certainly isn't fair to anyone. It's really convoluted.

Knives and Guns: A Follow Up

In an earlier post on knife crime in Britain, I made an assertion that knives are deadlier than guns at 20 feet.  A couple people thought this to be preposterous, and I wanted to follow up.

The key word is deadlier

First, knives inflict a type of damage to the body that is deadlier; they cause a wider path of damage across vital organs and/or cut across more veins and arteries increasing the rate at which one loses blood.  Gunshots (from pistols) have a much more contained area of damage.  Emergency room technicians find it easier to contain blood loss from a gunshot than from knife wounds.

Second, a knife wound occurs in close contact where the aggressor has greater control over where the wound is inflicted.  Additionally, in close proximity it is possible to inflict multiple wounds with a knife (not to mention twisting the knife to increase the area of damage -- see above).

Third, 20 feet is not that far.  Within 20 feet you can be on someone within a second and if the person isn't trained to react fast the victim is likely to be punctured in a vital region.  Even if the person blocks the knife stab, there is a good chance that they will receive a cut across the veins in the arm and/or the tendons and muscles.  A cut across a tendon or muscle in the forearm will incapacitate the use of that arm and hand for additional defense, leaving the victim open for more stabs or cuts.

What is most amazing is that even trained professionals can miss with a gun at 20 feet, particularly under stress.

Law enforcement officers are trained to consider knives within 20 feet to be lethal force.

Background: I train in martial arts (Tae Kwon Do and Hop Ki Do) with a state trooper and a couple of local police officers.  Our trainer also works with police around the area in different techniques.  We practice knife self-defense and it is amazing that even after extensive training you end up getting cut or punctured a lot.

Knives

Dude, you know way too much about this subject.

So how good is a knife up against, lets say, a shotgun loaded with phosphorus rounds?

---
Communist vs. Statist '08

Q. Is Panamanian born John McCain a "Natural Born Citizen"

Yep

I probably do know way too much about this subject. It was in response to an earlier post wherein knife crimes are up in Britain after cracking down on handguns. As far as a shotgun is concerned, I certainly wouldn't want to be on the other end of that. Fortunately, it is a bit difficult to see a shotgun (as compared to a handgun or knife), thus you can see it coming. <insert witty signature here>

"knives are deadlier than

"knives are deadlier than guns at 20 feet."

"a knife wound occurs in close contact..."

That pretty much sums up my question. AT 20 feet, one would have to throw a knife. And defensive firearms training involves training for an attacker rushing at you. To get into "close contact," he would obviously be closer than 20 feet. And would have to pass through 15, 10, and 5 foot distances.

It's logical to consider someone wielding a knife to be a danger inside 20 feet. And I'm sure a slashing wound would be worse than a gunshot wound. But AT 20 feet? I'll take the gun.

Obama Ability To Connect With The Voter

When hasn't the Obama 'Change' campaign not included embracing all elements of America? Where has age, sex, religion... ever influenced the campaign stance?

Politico: Two Muslim women at Barack Obama's rally in Detroit on Monday were barred from sitting behind the podium by campaign volunteers seeking to prevent the women's headscarves from appearing in photographs or on television with the candidate.

The campaign has apologized to the women, both Obama supporters who said they felt betrayed by their treatment at the rally. ...

Sixth foot washes ashore in Canadian mystery

A sixth human foot, wearing an Adidas training shoe, bobbed ashore near

The discovery of five right feet and one left foot has spawned wildly
contrasting theories about their origin, ranging from murders by biker gangs

Police are focusing on a possible link to a plane crash in the area in

Saving energy ???

Can someone tell me why people are so afraid of acceleration lanes on roadways? Could they think they are saving gas by avoiding using 'acceleration' lanes? They will sit for a few minutes at the intersection then jump out into traffic and cause issues rather than using the lane to get up to speed and then smoothly merge with through traffic. I wonder if yielding and merging are a lost art since so many things now fasten with Velcro rather than zippers. Rather than smoothly coming together in an orderly fashion the Velcro people just jump and stick to whatever is there.

Maybe people also think using turn signals somehow cuts their gas mileage since so few use them. Or maybe turn signals have become far too complicated for most people to figure out.

Just curious.

"We (the government) should own the refineries. Then we can control how much gets out into the market."

This is unadulterated Marxist craptrap. Absolutely, no argument in yer face sucka Marxism.

That is: the appropriation of the means of production and distrubution by the STATE.

IS FAILED MARXIST GIBBERISH NOW DEMOCRAT PARTY POLICY?

Vote 4 change. Vote 4 anything. See Jack & Mr Shy's first campaign ad for the ONLY viable 3rd party candidate.

Marxism is no "Utopia"

We should state here for those less familiar with the notorious history of Marxism, that Marxism has failed miserably everywhere it has ever been tried. Not only has it failed to produce the promised "utopia" society, but it has been shown to be the root cause of some of the worst atrocities and genocides ever inflicted on mankind in the history of the world.

Marxists have a habit of of duping large groups of people every few decades into thinking that Marxist Socialism is a "new" and "fairer" and "more just" system of government. Nothing could be further from the truth. It results in a government where tyrannical bureaucrats have absolute power over life and death and it creates a society plagued by universal poverty and ruin

To put it bluntly, Marxist Socialists can't envision any form of government that doesn't bear a striking resemblance to an ant hill

So next time you hear a liberal spouting off about socialism, socialization, social justice, social progress, they are talking about turning you into a worker ant to help them build their mound...(ahem)... I mean, utopia.

Let us not also forget that in order for Marxist Socialists to set up their form of government, they will have to end our constituional form of government and our bill of rights, and replace our freedom of religion with Atheism.  Sound like fun yet?  Don't worry, it gets worse, much worse.

The rise and fall of the Soviet Union should be requred study at every school, church, and University in the land. It beats any horror story you could come up with.
