For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: who will replace Tim Russert as NBC's Washington bureau chief and "Meet the Press" moderator?
As you might imagine, the Kossacks were quick to suggest Keith Olbermann. Could NBC be so foolish as to promote this disgusting caricature of a journalist?
Much more reasonable is David Gregory who has been doing a pretty good job on his new MSNBC show.
Another name being mentioned is Andrea Mitchell who has filled in for Russert when he's been on vacation. However, might Katie Couric's "Evening News" failure, as well as Hillary's, dissuade the network from promoting a woman?
Of course, there's always Chris Matthews who proved early on with "Hardball" that he can actually be an impartial host when he wants to be. Unfortunately, he dropped such neutrality after Bush became president, but could be good in this role if he went back to what made "Hardball" successful in the '90s.
Any other names come to mind?

It won't happen
June 14, 2008 - 09:51 ET by pbthinkerThe name that comes to mind is Brit Hume. He enjoys politics, as much as Russert did, and is capable of asking the tough questions. He hasn't shown himself to be as partisan as Matthews or Gregory, but alas that won't happen.
My guess is David Gregory with Matthews being number 2.

June 14, 2008 - 10:17 ET by Gat New YorkIf they stay in the famly I believe you are right about it being David Gregory. Gregory was probably being groomed for the position and he did substitute for Russert. In watching his cable show at times he has mde efforts to moderate fairly and not show his political bias.
However I would not be surprised to see them go outside but I think it would be to Russert's primary competitor's: Stephanoulous or Wallace.
A choice of clowns like Matthews or Olbermann would bring immediate scorn even from the MSM and would kill Meet The Press.

And Stephanopolous? Ouch! The laughter welling up inside of me is really starting to hurt! Georgie-Boy is a joke. He's not up to the task. And he's painfully libbie!

June 14, 2008 - 09:52 ET by mister josephI have a feeling they're going to "go diverse" and hire a woman--Meredith Vierra comes to mind--and then promote the pseudo-accomplishiment as 'the first woman anchor of a Sunday morning political talk forum,' simply to garner the viewership that they will most assuredly lose from losing Russert.

Rest in Peace
June 14, 2008 - 09:53 ET by Noel SheppardNBers,
On a personal note, my blessings go out to the Russert family. I've been watching Tim on "MTP" since he replaced Garrick Utley in 1991. Although he certainly leans left, and sometimes had a hard time hiding his political proclivities, he made "MTP" a Sunday morning must-see, and, as a result, has been part of my Sundays for decades.
What I especially liked about Tim was that he seemed like a real person, someone you'd like to sit down and have a beer with. He clearly loved his country, as well as his Buffalo Bills, and wasn't shy about adding a little of his warmer more personal side at the end of the program.
Rest in Peace, Tim. You will be very dearly missed. ns

June 14, 2008 - 09:54 ET by motherbeltIf NBC puts Keith Olbermann front and center on Sunday mornings in Meet the Press, they have grapes for brains.
I don't think KO would like the gig anyway; he would be required to sometimes interview people that disagree with him.

Gregory, MItchell, Matthews
June 14, 2008 - 10:14 ET by pilsenerI think pb thinker has it right.
Gregory is the logical choice, since he is obviously being groomed to move-up.
Andrea Mitchell would be a temporary filler (2 years) if they are not happy with current choices.
Chris Matthews would KILL to replace Russert. But he has gone so far over the edge with his Obama tingles, mind-reading, and anti-war rhetoric that he really shouldn't be seriously considered.
Olbermann would be an announcement that NBC news wants to be Air America.
CHRIS WALLACE
June 14, 2008 - 10:19 ET by krendlerWallace would be absolutely perfect. He has the smarts and the temperament. There would be a huge outcry from the left, but after they witnessed him laying into conservatives a couple of times with the same no-nonsense intensity that he goes after liberals, I think he'd win them over.
Skeptical that NBC would do it though. They don't really want someone who's impartial. They're going to want someone left of center.
Matthews circa pre-Bush would do, but he still wouldn't be as good as today's Wallace.
Olbermann would be a mockery of the whole concept of MTP. They might as well stick Bill Maher in there.
Plus Olby can't think on his feet. Does fine reading off a teleprompter surrounded by yes-men. That's about it (in that respect, he reminds me of a certain presidential candidate that Olbermann and Matthews are extremely fond of).

June 14, 2008 - 11:07 ET by CaringwhiteguyThe Sunday shows have become less and less relevant. While Russert gave some credibility to the NBC effort it certainly wasn't the widely anticipated program we political junkies couldn't miss.
Perhaps NBC will lead the way by launching counter-programming on Sunday mornings while the other three networks keep trotting out the same old guests spewing the same old tripe leading to the same old vapid conclusions.

Can we please move on from Russert?
June 14, 2008 - 12:02 ET by Dr_LibertyI know that this is a media watchdog and commentary site so I do understand the chatting about Tim Russert here.
However, with that said, I am tired of hearing about it on every news website and TV station. When a news person dies, there is so much ponderous pontificating about him or her that the only thing revealed is how self-absorbed the media are. There are a lot more people who die in other professions who have a greater impact on the way we live that never get heralded in this way.
Consider the seemingly unending news reports when a "brave" news reporter dies in Iraq or Afghanistan. You never hear similar in-depth discussion of the soldiers who die doing a much more difficult and low paying job, let alone the cameraman who makes some pretty boy journalist look good.
I only fear that there is nothing we can do to "intervene" on behalf of these media aristocrats who amidst their increasing irrelevancy still think they are princes and princesses worthy of worship.

Seriously, if they wanted to get some eyeballs and therefore make a few bucks and keep MTP's ratings up top, why not liven up Britt Hume a tad, get him to smile a little more? NBC would knock the socks off ABC and CBS in the time slot. Chris Wallace is fine as well.
Russert's shoes will be hard to fill. Gregory comes across as a left coast elitist partisan snot who can no more relate to Russert's audience than can Gore Vidal. His coiffure budget would embarrass John Edwards'. Matthews is a clown who would have NBC/GE execs sitting on the edge of their office sofas waiting for his next 'wet leg' remark. Diane Sawyer and Mitchell are probably too old and after the Couric disaster, why risk a top-rated show ($$$) to make a statement or be a pioneer? If its risk they're willing to take, do it with some slightly to-the-right down-to-earth blue-collar kinda guy.

June 14, 2008 - 16:05 ET by mister josephhere's a radical notion: let the show die with Russert. if NBC talks about how 'irreplacable' Russert is, doesn't it denegrate his memory to let it continue after Russert's passing? this scenario, it's not like Brinkley or Buckley, who stepped down while living, allowing their work to continue.
i think it should simply retire, out of respect.
A very good suggestion

June 14, 2008 - 19:55 ET by Cape Conservativetwo names that could possibly "fill those shoes" but I don't think 1) NBC will offer either of them the job and 2) I don't think either of them would accept ;-) Tony and Karl are both top notch candidates!

And an aroused donkey but no sex isn't "bestiality!!!!!" it's humor -- unless one is humor-impaired and clueless enough to "work" as a journalist. Bravo, Larry Lessig, for telling it like it is.
