For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: French chopping down D-Day memories:

The beech trees of Saint Pierre de Varengeville-Duclair forest bore a poignant testimony to the D-Day landings for more than six decades. Thousands of American soldiers stationed there after the liberation of Normandy spent their spare hours with a knife or bayonet creating a lasting reminder of their presence...Amid bureaucratic indifference and a dispute between officials and the forest owner, most of the trees have been felled, chopped up and turned into paper.

Is this just another example of French indifference to the nation and people who liberated them 64 years ago? Or, does the man that owns this land have every right to do what he wants with it?

This appears to be a non-story hype.

The trees were not removed as part of any kind of protest or anti Americanism.  The only reasons given were safety, bureaucracy and economic.

I concur...plus let's face it, these trees would have wiped out someway in the future anyway be it storm, fire, or humans. It may have been a story if some skin headed dude with a swastika was doing the chopping.

My freinds you have a point,

My freinds you have a point, but for the sake of perserving history and or respect for thoe who gave their lives to liberate France, could they not have saved or preserved one tree in memory of these brave men?

Did they get photographs of

Did they get photographs of the trees before bringing them down? Video, perhaps? Any attempt to preserve a few of the trees after bringing them down?

I can understand the possible need to bring down these trees. But there are modern ways the symbolism and historic interest of these trees could have been preserved better.

While I'm disappointed that some French citizens willfully ignored the historical significance of these trees, I'm equally impressed that there are several who recognize the value of these trees and were incensed enough to make issue of it.

Even though it is a piece

Even though it is a piece of history, time marches on and D-Day is remembered in our nations boosom.  I see it as a property rights issue and if some want it saved then they can either buy the land, trim the trees for the owner or cut the trees down and preserve the history that way.

Remember in 1000 years most will have forgotten about D-Day and relegated it to some dusty corridor of time.  It may sound crass but it is practical.   Just look at today and the blasie mood when you mention D-Day.

Im all for preserving history but time does march on.

LIES EXPOSED

First off I am not a Rick Warren fan but here he replies to a Newsweek article about SoulForce being invited to his church for Father's Day. Does it surprise anyone that Newsweek fibbed?

The Atlanta Journal and Constitution exposes the lies told by the Brady Center to Prevent Handgun Violence. This is fair and balanced for a change. I don't think it was run by Cynthia Tucker first.

while I have no great affection for the French

I have been softened lately by their slight turn towards the right.

I read a story about this and apparently this is not some governmental statement or even some protest by the locals. The owner decided to sell the  trees for money so they could be used for paper. Many governmental and local types were outraged and dismayed. There is a movement afoot to put the remaining trees on a monuments list for protection.

I'm as anxious to skewer the French as much as the next guy (as evidenced by some of my T-shirts) but let's be fair.

While it would have been

While it would have been nice of him to preserve them, it is his land to do with as he wished.

Look at it this way, if it were the US it would have been taken over by the government and declared a "historical site" and he would not have been allowed to do anything with his own land.

Oh wait, they are trying to do that!

I guess it depends on how many trees in how many places, and how inconvenient it is for the current inhabitants.

Back in Time

For some reason this story sucked me back in time.

A screen door slamming, a neighbor feeding noisy chickens in the yard next door, my big brother going off to war.

I have stored those memories of those years. The trees don't figure into my thinking. Let it be.

Sell the trees or give away the property..Just a guess..

Just a little site work, to remove those pesky white markers, and a GREAT hotel site will be available, soon.

This SCOTUS ruling has got me pissed off.. A libtard friend said that it has to do with the fact we are NOT at war.. Congress has not declared war since WW-2 .. So is he right? Is this the basis of the court ruling?

Dan I agree with you.

However, these are the only wars declared by the congress:

The War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the Spanish-American War, World
War I and World War II.

My libs friends arguement is the SCOTUS , ruled the way they did, Kuz it's not a declared war!

Liberals62%ain't no fixin stupid

IranianUranium

I disagree with  your

I disagree with  your statement "However, these are the only wars declared by the congress" because if you look at the Constitution and resolutions by congress you will find it is the intent of agression that has to be authorized not a declaration of war specifically.  So what we get down to is congress authorizing funding for troops taht the President placed in a state of war.  And the language has changed.

So to wrap it up, when congress authorizes troops to go fight and funds it that is a declaration of war.  Next time ask you friend to specifically define what a declaration of war is.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

And I respectfully disagree

".. congress authorizing funding for troops that the President placed in a state of war."

That's the problem.  Congress deliberately surrendered its authority to take this nation to war and put it in the hands of one man.

This delegation of authority allowed such weasels as Clinton, Kerry, Edwards et al the opportunity to say they were with Bush all the way if it went well, and to say, as they did, when it went less well that they voted for the authorization merely to give Bush more leverage in dealing with Iraq and that they never actually meant to give him the power to go to war.  Now that fact that everybody knew that the authorization meant war unless the Hussein gang left town is beside the point.

If Congress had to have actually declared war the politicians would have had to have made a real decision for war and thus we would have avoided the spectacle of these weasals blaming Bush for making a decision which constitutionally was theirs.

IMO, we can longer afford any more wars without a formal declaration by Congress.

I see it working pretty

I see it working pretty close to how it should work and how the founders envisioned it.  When Jefferson, one of the original founders, sent our navy to the Barbary Coast to protect USA interests without a declaration of war; then I can see the idea of how it works.  He sent them there and then congress had to decide to fund them or not.

They did fund them, politically expedient for them, and the USA fought their first war overseas without a declaration.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Dan I didn't know about the, Barbary coast details .

I knew I could count on NBers , Thanks.

Fox News shows their street

Well, they are a right-wing

Well, they are a right-wing news channel, right?

I hope you would expect the same but opposite from MSNBC, right? I know I would.

I think that anybody who denies one channel's bias while accusing the other of bias is disingeuous. I mean that for partisans on BOTH sides, not just singling out my pal Bal!

Thankfully the term "nappy-headed baby mama" was not used :P

I wouldn't deny a bias the

I wouldn't deny a bias the other way. I bet FNC wouldn't use the term "baby mama" with a white candidate.

Your point is? That Fox News

Your point is? That Fox News is racist? Stop rationalizing your hatred of Fox. CNN and MSNBC is no better.

I don't hate Fox. Just

I don't hate Fox. Just pointing this out as a bad choice.

No, you aren't just doing

No, you aren't just doing that. Even when you admit the bias of these cable news networks, you still have to justify your outrage over Fox by INSINUATING undercurrents of racism. You are not treating these channels as all being equally-biased when you say that, even after this website has given countless examples of such bias.

You make yourself look like you either:

a) have a serious axe to grind with Fox News

or

b) don't really believe in the bias at MCNBC and CNN, but are just paying lip service to hide that hypocrisy.

Again, not outraged over

Again, not outraged over this. I've never been outraged at Fox. I don't think they're as fabulous as some think they are, though.

So, why would you say

So, why would you say something like this:

I bet FNC wouldn't use the term "baby mama" with a white candidate.

To point out that they're

To point out that they're not perfect, and that in this case they tried to use "hip" language as a caption about the black guy.

If you thought they were

If you thought they were just trying to be "hip", the "white candidate" line would have been immaterial. No, you did it to point out they are RACIST, didn't you, Bal?

Holy backpedal, Ronnie Lott!

I don't know about racist.

I don't know about racist. Demeaning? Maybe.

Is this 'baby mama' another

Is this 'baby mama' another insult only 'African Americans' (as opposed to regular Americans) are allowed to use, like the 'n' word? Is there a list or book telling us poor white folk what words we are not allowed to use?

D

Keep the ILLEGALS out, join NumbersUSA to send free faxes to your reps.

The Obamas are married.

The Obamas are married. "Baby mama" is a term for the unwed mother of a child. It would be an insult to anyone married.

Bal, if that's a derogatory

Bal, if that's a derogatory name, why is it that Michelle herself used "baby dady" to introduce Barak at the DNC convention in 2004?

I remember it because I thought it was such an absurd term for a supposedly respectable forum.

Assuming we can trust CNN's transcript (I know, I know...)

HUGE assumption even elsewhere and especially around here, but anyway, this

...
MICHELLE OBAMA, WIFE OF BARACK OBAMA: My baby's daddy Barack Obama. Yeah!

BARACK OBAMA, SENATOR-ELECT, ILLINOIS: Thank you, Illinois. Thank you.
Thank you, Illinois. I don't know about you but I'm still fired up. I
am fired up. Look at this crowd. Thank you, Illinois.

...

indicates an apostrophe in the introduction.

Thanks sarc.  I wasn't sure

Thanks sarc.  I wasn't sure I had the actual quote right, so CNN is probably correct.

However, I don't understand how they're not the same. I guess I'm culturally defficient in that regard.

Would "baby's mama" mean something different and not be derogatory?

I'm culturally deficient, too

But it's correct English, which is something important to me (though we need to keep in mind it might just be the transcriber from CNN). I'm probably too much of a schoolmarm on correct English & the abuse the poor apostrophe takes on the 'net these days; while at the same time it's obvious that explicit pics of hot nude girls painted/photoshopped as cows don't really bother me. IOW I might not be the best judge of all this, and considering my own admitted biases I'll recuse myself.
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

Sarc, I understand the

Sarc, I understand the proper use of the apostrophe.  Ebonics on the other hand doesn't seem to.  I was just trying to figure out which term was Ebonically acceptable: baby mama vs. baby's mama and baby daddy vs. baby's daddy. I mean, if baby mama is not acceptable for describing a married mother, how is baby's daddy any better for describing the married father?

Forgive me if I misunderstood your critique.

Oh, I'm not sure I understand myself

But I think the incorrect English version means "unmarried" on "the street," and is therefore considered potentially insulting in this case since they're husband and wife. I could be wrong, though.
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

You may be right.

You may be right.  Personally, I don't feel bad not knowing the difference.

But, like I said to Bal in my original post, I thought the term she used was absurd for the forum it was used in.  I don't think any political convention needs 'street cred' brought into it.

Another reason I'm glad I'm not a liberal Dem.

ok so here it is, I

ok so here it is,

I don't claim to be an expert but , if you have a baby mama ( no apostrophe) you have a child with the women, same for baby daddy.  Married or unmarried, you can be married and several baby mamas, and vice versa.

I know this because in hang out with my friends who by chance of genetics have darker skin then i do ( i refuse to say "I have black friends"  because they are my friends first and formost, ) and they refer to people like that

Thanks red dragon, So, if I

Thanks red dragon,

So, if I read that correctly, your informed opinion is that baby mama could refer to both a married or unmarried mother.

In that case Bal's contention that it was an insult for Fox to have used it in reference to Michelle Obama is invalid, except for the fact that Fox had the temerity to use a slang term similar to one she herself has used.

   Yes just as long as

Yes just as long as the women in question is the mother of your child, out of wedlock is reguardless.

also from what I have observed it is NOT an insult at all, but a state of being.

"She is my sisters best friend"  = the best friend of my sister

"He is my uncle"

"She, his baby mama" she is the mother of his child

I was worried for a moment. I thought it might have been the trees along Le Chans Elise--remember, the French planted them to keep the sun off of the marching German soldiers. Oh well.

An appearance of "impropriety?

Senators Dodd and Conrad are among the government officials who scored V.I.P. loans from C.E.O. Angelo Mozilo.

Two U.S. senators, two former Cabinet members, and a former ambassador to the United Nations received loans from Countrywide Financial through a little-known program that waived points, lender fees, and company borrowing rules for prominent people.

Senators Christopher Dodd, Democrat from Connecticut and chairman of the Banking Committee, and Kent Conrad, Democrat from North Dakota, chairman of the Budget Committee and a member of the Finance Committee, refinanced properties through Countrywide’s “V.I.P.” program in 2003 and 2004...

Most of the officials belonged to a group of V.I.P. loan recipients known in company documents and emails as “F.O.A.'s”—Friends of Angelo, a reference to Countrywide chief executive Angelo Mozilo While the V.I.P. program also serviced friends and contacts of other Countrywide executives, the F.O.A.’s made up the biggest subset.

According to company documents and emails, the V.I.P.'s received better deals than those available to ordinary borrowers. Home-loan customers can reduce their interest rates by paying “points”—one point equals 1 percent of the loan’s value. For V.I.P.'s, Countrywide often waived at least half a point and eliminated fees amounting to hundreds of dollars for underwriting, processing and document preparation. If interest rates fell while a V.I.P. loan was pending, Countrywide provided a free “float-down” to the lower rate, eschewing its usual charge of half a point. Some V.I.P.'s who bought or refinanced investment properties were often given the lower interest rate associated with primary residences.

Let's see, the head of the Senate Banking Committee getting sweetheart deals from a major player in one of the industries his committee oversees.  Hmmmm.

No doubt we can expect "Larry Craig" type coverage from the MSM on this.

"The Dodds received a competitive rate on their loans," spokesman Bryan DeAngelis said in a statement. "They did not seek or anticipate any special treatment and they were not aware of any."

Dodd's statement is just more proof of how stupid they think we are.

C'est la vie

When i first saw this, I thought man, that's some pretty old trees considering the fact they were that size 60 years ago.

Then I found out typical lifespan for european beech is 150-200 years, 300 not uncommon.

Too bad no one photographically documented all the carvings for posterity. Would've made a great coffee table book.

Alex Kozinski's porn-stash

Is a bit less exciting than expected. Some of it is gross, but some is quite funny, IMO, and I didn't find the cow chicks disturbing at all, but that's just me and I'm sure feminists are universally outraged. I wish he'd done a better job of hiding it -- and he has a reputation as one of our most tech-savvy federal judges, so interpret that as you wish. Anyway, he's human, and shockingly enough, human males like sexy images. (Full disclosure: I've never met the Judge in person, but I consider him a friend. We occasionally correspond due mostly to our shared interest in very boring law and in very tasteless jokes. BTW AK rejected one of my jokes a few years ago as too tasteless, which it was!)

Consider the cloak lifted

Sarc, come on!!! This was on hizzoner's, and I use the term loosely, WEBSITE!!!!! If it were on his personal computer, I would be inclined to agree with you. I find most, if not all, of the content not much, but not on a CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE'S website.

"This
liberal would be all about socialize -- uh, uh, would be about
basically taking over and the government running all of your companies."-Maxine Waters 2008

I know this is a lame excuse, but...

I suspect he truly didn't think the material could be accessed publicly. Also the website wasn't just the Judge, it's also his sons, and was registered in Yale's name. If you're actually interested in my buddy's guess at the technical details, which sounds about right to me, I can try to recount it. Basically, AK's a computer experimenter who was playing around with domain names, files he/they found amusing or interesting, and a web server.

I "met" him online in the late '90s because he'd written a very funny and well written article for Newsweek about building his own computer, but I was already a fan. His computer, if the suspicions are correct, was running Apache under Linux/Unix, probably, if my buddy and I had to guess, remotely administered by one of his college+ aged sons rather than AK. It's quite possible this setup had a mis-configuration or other security issue, because that's what often happens when humans experiment with networked computers.

Some people, including yours truly, think some of this stuff is pretty funny. Humor is a matter of taste. I "know" the real Judge Alex Kozinski enough to know that his all too human interest in this sort of X-rated adult stuff isn't the only thing you should know about him. He's Reagan's best appointment by far IMO, and AK is unmistakably the voice of sanity on an otherwise insane 9th Circuit. Even if, like me, you're not at all in favor of illegal immigration, you might enjoy the imaginary dialog in his dissent in United States vs Ramirez-Lopez. Or better yet, read his snowboarding article (pdf) linked one page down in this hilarious email to Article III Groupie, which manages to make fun of his own 9th Circuit. I know the idea of a Federal Judge acting like an ordinary human being is strange, but AK's a bit of a strange guy, I guess.

It's interesting, but not surprising, that he's now having himself investigated. [Edit: He has now declared a mistrial because of the publicity. One wonders what might have resulted from a hypothetical Federal Judge assigned to a porn case, but discovered with a secret stash of pro-censorship/prudery writings, instead of porn, on his kid's website.] Anyway, the bottom line is you need to cool down about this one. The Federal Judiciary has far greater problems than a ribald libertarian brilliant funny Reagan appointee.

Obama

A solid proponent of recycling - speeches:

Recognize this?

“You’ll have boundless opportunities when you graduate,” he told the students, “and it’s very easy to just take that diploma, forget about all this progressive-politics stuff, and go chasing after the big house and the large salary and the nice suits and all the other things that our money culture says you should buy. But I hope you don’t get off that easy. There’s nothing wrong with making money, but focusing your life solely on making a buck shows a poverty of ambition.”

Didn't we hear these same exact words spoken at the recent commencement address Obama gave in Ted Kennedy's stead? Well, check out the article in Harper's that was recently linked on another thread:  "Barack Obama: The birth of a Washington machine" (above quote found in 3rd paragraph).

I don't know. Maybe I'm just being nitpicky. But I think it shows a "poverty of creative/independent thought". I suppose one could say, in his defense, that he was given short notice and didn't have time to do more than dig up some of his tried and true material. I guess he didn't have time to consult with Jeremiah Wright.

BBC show: Christian "fundamentalist" beheads Muslim

That's right folks. The BBC has made a new series in which "right-wing Christian fanatics" behead a Muslim. Happens ALL the time, doncha know!

Please note, the only people protesting the show (so far) are those who think it "trivializes" archeology.

BBC defends Muslim beheading

Exclusive by Derek Robins
- BBC bosses have defended the grisly beheading of a Muslim by a Christian zealot in new drama Bonekickers.

In the bloody scene, Paul Nicholls plays a fundamentalist who decapitates a Muslim with a sword.

Producer Rhonda Smith said: "It's not meant to be shocking or to cause offence and it comes very much from the storyline."

BBC chiefs are planning to warn viewers about the gruesome beheading scene.

A BBC spokeswoman said: "It is in a 9pm slot in early July and viewers will be advised of the content immediately before broadcast."

The six-parter billed as Time Team meets Indiana Jones follows a group of archaeologists solving historical mysteries. It stars Julie Graham, Hugh Bonneville and Adrian Lester.

The beheading scene comes in an episode dealing with the excavation of medieval soldiers from the time of the Crusades.

It leads to the hunt for the cross on which Jesus was crucified which the Crusaders may have brought back from the Holy Land.

Also keen to find the cross are right-wing Christian fanatics who also want to use violence to drive Muslims out of Britain.

Bonekickers could also come under fire from traditional archaeologists, warns Professor Mark Horton, a consultant on the series.

Horton said: "I think there will be a backlash from the anoraks - some have already written to the BBC saying it will trivialise archaeology and the title will annoy them."

Unbelievable Jack - These people are so clueless

Just like that V for Vendetta film where the Christian leader banned the Koran. They are so warped that they transfer what the Muslims are doing to modern Christians that don't do anything of the sort.

Christians don't try to forcibly ban Islam or any other religion. They don't bomb and behead people in any significant numbers. Christians peacefully evangelize and also provide charity while doing so.

What Muslim groups are out there providing charity and help to non Muslims? It's so crazy how many liberals are brainwashed by this obvious nonsense.

Christians don't try to

Christians don't try to forcibly ban Islam or any other religion

And of course you mean moden day Christians because Christian leaders have committed all sorts of attrocities including banning all other religions.  That said Christianity has evolved in the way we treat others and other religions.  But, teh same can't be said for Islam.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Exactly right Dan

And liberals have no interest in helping Islam evolve in the same peaceful way. They still just want to blame everything radical Muslims do on Christians. It's really mind boggling how prejudiced they are against Christians for no good reason.

Yea man, I'm sad as hell. Say what ya' want, but Tim wasn't a far-leftist and although liberal, he was a consummate proffesional. A sad day day for journalism. My prayers are with him and his family. God bless you Tim.

Tim Russert...

I am truly saddened at the news of the sudden passing of Tim Russert. I have no use for pretty much everyone at NBC News, with the exception of Mr. Russert. He was about the only person at NBC who managed to maintain anything close to an impartial approach to the news, particularly when it came to politics. Tim Russert was a true gentleman and a class act, and he will be missed.

bt, I am seriously considering voting for Obama in November.

After McCain's recent statements as they pertain to the economy and rising gas prices, as well as his ignorance on the subject of the "obscene" profits of the oil companies, it has become painfully clear that this man is wholly uneducated in the area of free markets and the laws of supply-and-demand.

McCain would be a total disaster as president.

RD - there is no good reason to vote for Obama though

It's better to vote for the Libertarian or anyone - just someone other than Obama. Obama is going to win anyway and the bigger his margin the more he'll feel he has a mandate.

RD

Considering the record of Republican appointed SCOTUS judges lately, I am inclined to agree. I don't know if I can vote for Obama, but it will be thankless work voting at all in November.

(BTW, still don't know who I will vote for. I used to be on the McCain is better bandwagon, but he keeps trying to push me off.)

Brit -- I've been saying for years that the US should build massive Mega-Carriers, the like of which the world has never seen.

That would obviate the need to depend on any land mass (and ANY ally) to project military might and airpower across the globe.

They would never have to dock in any port -- being supplied at sea by their own blue water mini-navy.

It's America Alone, because even the UK (the most loyal ally to the US) is being eaten away from within.

America cannot count on air bases and supplies from anyone in the future.
