For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: House punts on impeachment:

The House has voted to send articles of impeachment against President Bush to a committee that is not likely to hold hearings before the end of his term. By 251-166, House members dispatched the measure to a committee on Wednesday — a procedure often used to kill legislation.

What was this nonsense all about? Is this just an extension of Bush Derangement Syndrome, or a reflection of just how lost the Democrats are?

After all, with gas prices over $4/gallon, and the new leadership now having gone 17 months without proposing energy legislation to deal with the crisis despite campaign promises to do so, did they really need to spend days talking about this? Is this more reflective of their intellectual bankruptcy or their devotion to their supporters on the ultra-left that love this foolishness?

Supreme Court: Terrorists Have Rights

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that foreign terrorism suspects held at Guantanamo Bay have rights under the Constitution to challenge their detention in U.S. civilian courts.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080612/ap_on_go_su_co/scotus_guantanamo

Oh, this just makes me sick.

Oh, this just makes me sick.

That is stunning and will

That is stunning and will certainly embolden terrorists around the world to kill Americans at will knowing if caught they will simply work over the American judicial system.  Our founding fathers have been disgraced by this ruling.  This is a great example of the danger of electing someone like Obama who would fill the court with judges who decide to ignore the constitution.

3 of the 5 who made this

3 of the 5 who made this disasterous decision were appointed by Republicans

Stevens was appointed by Ford. Kennedy was appointed by Reagan.  And Souter was appointed by Bush 41.

Our rights are being rescinded and BOTH parties are to blame.

That just proves you can't

That just proves you can't put a wishy-washy "moderate" in there. They turn left every time. It's not so much who appointed them that makes them who they are, it's the way they vote.

A difficult to thing to do

The HARDEST thing any President can do is nominate a Supreme Court Justice.

Even Eisenhower was noted for stating that he thought the three biggest mistakes he made as President were all sitting on the Supreme Court.

What's next, US citizenship for terrorists?

For s split second there, I was thinking this must be the CUBAN Constitution.

The ACLU is chartering every 747 they can lay their hands on for their first airlift of lawyers to Cuba.

Those guys will mix well

Those guys will mix well with the population of our prisons. It will be a gladfest. Of course, they won't try to recruit any new followers or anything like that.

These dirty filthy treasonous Judges should be impeached to put it politely.

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Wilson

Oh the handwringing!

They're going to be tried based on the evidence against them. If they're found to be guilty, let them be punished. If they're found to be innocent...well, maybe we better keep them locked up because if they didn't hate us yet, 5-6 in Guantanamo has probably pushed them over the edge. This is why sending them to legal exile in Guantanamo was a bad idea in the first place. Torturing them at Guantanamo was also a bad idea because I'm pretty sure whatever evidence obtained through torture is going to be thrown out.

Bush screwed up on this one.

They were not being tortured blogonator

Stop making things up. They have been treated better than any other prisoners of war ever.

Giving prisoners of war access to our courts is ludicrous.

All they need now is money and an O.J. lawyer.

As I've said before. This court is not conservative.

It really depends on how you define torture

Doesn't it? Bush has his definition, but he won't tell you what it is, but he will reassure you again and again that we don't torture. Trust me, he says. It's "enhanced interrogation." And this thing you call a spade, it's really a [insert your favorite nonsense word here]. Nope, not a spade at all. Hey! You! Quit digging with that!

Torture, by any other name, is still torture. But don't take my word for it.

http://www.washingto...

God forbid any of us should be enhancedly interrogated.

But then again...

....if the detainees simply told us what we wanted to know there wouldn't be any need for enhanced interrogation, would there?

Unless of course you think that terrorists/unlawful combatants are protected by the Geneva Convention (name/rank/serial number),  and/or have 5th Amendment protection.

From my perspective...

The principle problem with torture is not that some bad guys get treated roughly, although there are clear limits beyond which civilized nations should never tread regardless of who the prisoner is. The problem is when you're in the wrong place at the wrong time, or you get misidentified. Then there are no right answers. And because you have no access to any judicial system, there's no way to clear your name. No habeas corpus, no trial, no way out.

This is Guantanamo for some fraction of its inmates, and I think future court cases will bear this out. Of course everyone in prison is innocent. The thing is, some of those people actually are. DNA evidence has proven that to be so in this country.

When you enhancedly interrogate, i.e. torture, innocent people, you make enemies for life. That is not how to win the war on terror.

Enhanced interrogation is not used on questionable

people. It's hardly used on anyone. There is no problem giving them access to military courts that would keep our military secrets secret. It's the discovery that will be given to terrorist lawyers (who could be terrorists themselves) that is outrageous. It's bad enough all the secrets our media gets a hold of and share with them. This is crazy.

I would have to believe...

....that our interrogators are pretty good at telling who is lying/denying he knows something and someone who isn't. And I also have to believe those folks are sorted out long before they are ever sent to Gitmo. Will they be 100% sure? Of course not, but we are at war, and in war civilized nations are often forced to do uncivilized things e.g. Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima.

We do distrust our government blogonator. We distrust them no matter who is at the helm. They don't put American citizens in Guantanamo. Only enemy combatants.

I didn't say I trusted the government

I said I have faith in our people and having 22 yrs in the Army and being around the intel community I have no problem doing that.

Now trusting our elected officials is something else.

I don't think Libs understand what Gitmo is

I don't think Libs understand what Gitmo is.

It's not a "jail" or a "prison" where US citizens wait for justice or to serve out their debt to society. It is an Enemy Prisoner of War camp run by the Defense Department where the enemy is taken and held indefinitely until the war is over so they don't rejoin their units and continue to kill , maim, and injure OUR soldiers, or worse, attack our homeland and our defenseless civilians with their bombs and their saboteurs.

The war is not over and the enemy is still the enemy. Let me repeat that...

The war is not over and the enemy is still the enemy...

To paraphrase Foghorn Leghorn; "is any of this filtering through those little blue bonnets o' yours?"

Giving EPWs access to American Civil Courts is beyond ludicrous, it effectively turns the entire population of the world into the equivalent of US Citizens.

The Judges who voted for this abortion of justice have revealed themselves as Megalomaniacs with delusions of ruling over all of the peoples of the globe and making the US taxpayer foot the bill for their new World Jurisdiction Court.

I say our elected officials should de-fund the Supreme court, and shut off the power and the water to the building until they come out and face a grand jury and courts martial for giving Aid and Comfort to the ENEMY, and Treason, and Conspiracy to Pervert the course of Justice; and the ones who are found guilty should be lined up in front of a firing squad (made up of each branch of the military) while standing directly in the shadow of the Tomb of the Unknowns.

Then each of them can be heaved into an unmarked pit on Nevassa Island.

Q. Is Panamanian born John McCain a "Natural Born Citizen"

Misguided blogonator

Well, at least I know whose side you are on (the terrorists of course).

I for one would really rather not Mirandize POWs or enemy combatants, especially after they just shot at, and did everything in their power to kill, my Airmen and I.

And as for your whines that somehow torture is being carried out at Guantanamo, you quite clearly do not know what you are talking about, especially considering that the prisoners there - who, by the way, unlike, say, the hostages in our embassy in Tehran nearly 30 years ago (for example), actually earned the trip there by shooting at our troops - are known to have gained weight while there among other things.  Oh, I suppose in your happy world, in order for us to show the bad guys how super-nice the United States is, we will have to put them up in the Waldorf Astoria.  Or would THAT be torture?

Maybe, blogonator, you should adopt one of these cuddly terrorists in order to show them how super-nice we are as a country.  But I doubt you have the guts to do that.

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

If we show them that we're

If we show them that we're nice and we mean them no harm, they'll realize we can all just get along. Violence never solved anything. Just ask all the war protesters I see in front of our court, they'll tell you. Blah blah blah blah blah, etc.

MSM - shaping all the perceptions you need to believe.

Deductive reasoning is not your strength

Being against torture does not equate to siding with terrorists. I'm against torture of political prisoners in China. I'm against torture of homosexuals in Egypt. I'm against torture of US troops captured in combat. From a moral perspective it's just wrong. That itself is enough reason for me. From a practical perspective, it's mostly useless. It's stupid. It's beneath the dignity of our country, and it will, it has, damaged our ability to actually bring these people to justice.

How about Mirandizing POWs or enemy combatants? I've got a better idea. How about we Mirandize straw men? Because that's exactly what you're setting up there.

Gaining weight is easy with feeding tubes.

http://www.washingto...

Again with the poor deductive reasoning! To equate being well-fed with being well-treated is to pretty much distill quaility of life to exactly one thing: calories in diet. A fat man is just as capable of being tortured.

Worry less about me and concentrate on yourself

Exactly and precisely wrong, blogonator!  You automatically presume, being a Leftist kool-aid drinker who long ago lost the ability to think critically, that the U.S. military practices torture at Gitmo.  I pointed out that much evidence proves the opposite, notably the fact that the detainees gain weight while held there - still, since you ache to believe the absolute worst about your country, you drive right past that.

I am sure you would also conveniently ignore the fact that I am constantly drilled in the Laws of Armed Conflict and could not deploy without showing I was properly trained in such, or the number of legal officers I hav encountered who were there to ensure that yes, we were in fact following the Geneva Conventions and our own laws to a T.

And I HARDLY set up a straw man, unless of course you elect not to read.  Go over the Supreme Court decision once again.  It is just about a Miranda v Arizona decision for terrorists.

Thus, it is not a reach to say that you are pro-terrorist.

Instead of worrying about my deductive reasoning, maybe you should worry more - much more - about your literacy and the contempt you hold both for my country and my (part-time) profession.

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

Sad, just sad

Much evidence you say? And this is best you've got?

notably the fact that the detainees gain weight while held there

Absolutely absurd, for the reason I gave above. I understand your reluctance to face me head on because your point is logically indefensible. Weight gain does not by any stretch prove someone has not been tortured. Nope. No way.

http://www.usatoday....

That guy probably put on a few pounds too.

It is just about a Miranda v Arizona decision for terrorists.

Way off base here too. Who is feeding you this tripe? Just about? As your opinion carries no weight with me, I find it amusing that you should make such a ridiculous claim and expect me to take it at face value with no points of comparison.

Finally, this isn't about you or me. I'm not being tortured. You aren't torturing people. But agents of the US government have tortured in the past at Guantanamo, at Abu Ghraib, at Bagram. Ignoring it doesn't help. Hiding behind an obfuscating term like "enhanced interrogation" doesn't help. The world isn't fooled. Our enemies aren't fooled. Until torture is finally repudiated as the disgusting tactic that it is, it will continue to plague us and expose our own POWs to the same kind of treatment.

Nope. You are the one who is sad. Read on

But agents of the US government have tortured in the past at Guantanamo, at Abu Ghraib, at Bagram.  Proof please, from a source that I can evaluate.

I realize that since we aren't putting up the terrorists in the Waldorf Astoria and pampering them as much as possible, that alone constitutes torture in many eyes, but work with me here.

Until torture is finally repudiated as the disgusting tactic that it is, it will continue to plague us and expose our own POWs to the same kind of treatment.  This statement alone shows me that you don't know what you are talking about.  Following the Geneva Convention sure led to pleasant stays by our troops in Chinese and North Korean POW camps, didn't it?  It sure made the Vietnamese treat our POWs with 5-star accomodations at the Hanoi Hilton, didn't it?  (May I recommend watching Return With Honor?)  It sure had an effect on the Iranians that took our embassy staff hostage!  Why, those mock executions and trips to solitary (for some) were just mere figments of the imagination and exaggerations!!!

Why, if we just give lots of hugs and show the whole world how SUPER-NICE we are, why, our enemies are just going to magically fall in love with us!!!  Right?

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

From a moral perspective

From a moral perspective it's just wrong.

That's not true. In fact it's an absurd stateement. What "moral" perspective are you quoting? Yours?

From a "moral" perspective it can be justified to torture a person. For instance, in order to prevent an act that could kill a million people.

No. You offer a faux morality in which you, naturally, are the superior being. But it's all fake, and reeks of sanctimony.

I don't happen to share your opinion that you are moraler than thou.

To me it seems cut and

To me it seems cut and dried, this is a military operation and the US Constitution and US law does not apply.  The military should try these people, already 100's have been let go and all taht remain are the hard core cases.  Even some if not all of the others have taken up arms against the USA again.

The SCOTUS judges should be shot.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

One question,

Might this decision have a profound effect on enemy combatants? I mean, doesn't "shoot on sight" make more sense than capture now?

Excellent article on the Senate Intel report...

...at NRO reminding us it was the DEMOCRATS who hyped the Iraqi WMD threat (the famous remarks by Jay Rockefeller in which he called Iraq "an imminent threat" have apparently mysteriously disappeared from his Senate web page).  Read for good ammunition to use on your BDS infected friends and co-workers.

The Senate Intelligence Committee’s report on prewar statements is a disgrace.

Democrats and two useful Republican idiots on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) have colluded in a disgraceful sham, published late last week as a report on “whether public statements regarding Iraq by U.S. government officials were substantiated by intelligence information” prior to the March 2003 invasion of Iraq.

All one really needs to know about this exercise in legerdemain is revealed by SSCI Chairman Jay Rockefeller’s diktat — over Republican protest and adopted without a vote — that the Committee would focus myopically on prewar statements made by administration officials. That is, the SSCI opted to overlook the overflowing stream of bellicose commentary, often less restrained, by Democrats.

Boy Scout Camp Tonado

Many of you have by now heard about the Boy Scout camp in Little Sioux, Iowa which was hit by a tornado last night. That's about 30 miles north of where I live in Council Bluffs. Three of the boys killed were from across the river in Omaha.

The storms last night were intense and widespread so we're a bit shell-shocked, to say the least. Yet, in spite of true devestation which was wreaked upon the scout camp and the dozens that were injued, the scouts reacted EXATLY as they were trained and when the storm passed treated wounds EXACTLY as they were trained and even went to the camp caretaker's house with tools they had found and rescued the caretaker and his family from his totally destroyed home.

So the next time any MSM outlet tries to claim the Boy Scouts to be a bigoted, insenistive homophobes...remind them of Little Sioux, Iowa and the true heroism which these 'boys" displayed in the wake of the storm.

Fine young men. Fine young men, all.

It's times like this that

It's times like this that bolster the immense pride I feel for being an Eagle Scout. Organizations like scouting should be raised to the pedestal on which they belong for their ability to create great men and women. My heart goes out to the victims.

As the proud father of 2 Eagle Scouts

my heart goes out to the families of those boys.  I am very proud that the scouts on the scene acted like men and used the skills that they had learned through scouting.

Both of my boys are Eagles and show respect to others, know how to care for themselves, are safe and excellent shots (have their own firearms), are good students and all around good guys.  I'm in love with both of them and very pleased with the men that they are going to be!

Contrast that to the protesters outside of military recruitment officers.  I just want to give them all a slap.  Cowards, each of them. When the day comes for action, the liberals will cower while the strong will take action.  I loathe liberals.

Can anybody tell me

Who promoted Barack Obamas speech at the democratic convention? He never had the horsepower or machine to do this by himself so somebody's pulling his strings. I wonder if the puppetmaster is named Soros?

Excellent question and one

Excellent question and one we may never know the entire story.

There is a lengthy but good Harper's Magazine article about the ascent of Obama written in November 2006.  The author essentially states that lobbyists, corporations, Democratic Party leaders and fundraisers are what catapulted Obama from the relative obscurity of a local politician, who had lost miserably 4 years earlier in his election bid to the Senate, to the instantaneous stardom afforded the keynote speaker at the 2004 Democrat Convention.  Two month after the keynote speech, Obama won the Senate seat with 70% of the vote.  One speech, one seat.  Nice return on investment.

Also, Obama has been his own lobbyist, having the 4th largest senate "leadership" PAC slush fund, the Hopefund, from which he has doled out money to candidates, including Joe Lieberman.  For a first-termer in the Senate, Obama sure had a lot of money behind him and received it quickly.  A large chunk of that money came from corporations and lobbyists.  (Shhh!)

Obama money-quote from the article:

I asked Obama a question about pork-barrel spending. Did he feel pressure to deliver federal money for home-state interests? “Pork is in the eye of the beholder,” he said.

Riiiiiiight.

Obama's website (see Myth #5) has refuted these claims, stating Obama was chosen by John Kerry in a move to essentially shore up the Black vote.  Interestingly, Kerry had only met Obama ~7 months previously at a fundraiser.  Exactly what, or whom, transpired in those 7 months to give the nationally unknown Obama the highly coveted keynote Convention speech?

Advice

My wife and I have 4th of July plans in DC. I have done some homework online, but wanted to know first hand what some of you would put on the list for a 2 day trip. Local food spots would be appreciated, also anything to avoid.

You trying to say Jesus Christ can't hit a curveball?

A Must See

The Air & Space Museum is a must see.

2 days?

first timers should probably walk the monuments, the mall, capitol hill, around the WH - one day easy - pack a lunch and have a picnic...

kinda short notice but your congress "person(s)" can maybe take you inside the WH for a private tour - high five the prez - he's doing a great job...

day 2 relax and walk the Georgetown main drag - good food, people-watching, expensive stores - just browse - shop at walmart when you get home...

and definitely try to hit the air/space museum when yer by the airport - assuming your out of Dulles...

All of the Smithsonian

All of the Smithsonian museums are great, Natural history is my favorite, Air and Space is also cool, if you go to A&S see the movie Too Fly, my favorite of all time. I also found the fairly new Korean monument to be very nice in a surreal sort of way, I had a hard time pulling myself away. They were just building the WWII when I was last their, but I highly recommend all of the monuments in the Mall area.

spend the full day on the mall

When I lived in Virginia (several years ago), we used to get into DC early morning July 4th (to get a good parking space before they closed some roads). We would watch the parade (usually very good) then hang out on the mall and in the Smithsonian Museums. Early afternoon, find your spot on the mall for the fireworks, then relax there until they start. Definately the best fireworks in the country.

And don't forget the Bureau of Engraving and Printing...watch them make money

Must eat there. Expensive, but fabulous decor, food, ambience. The classic DC dining experience in my view.

As for two days, understand that you'll be in the National Mall area the entire 4th. As such, your question really only applies to one day. With that as pretext, if you've never done Air and Space at the Smithsonian -- or haven't since you were a kid -- this is a must. Want to become ten years old again? Spend three hours there, and you'll be back in elementary school.

Then, jump on the Metro -- very user-friendly train system -- and head to Arlington Cemetery. Wear shorts and sneakers. Don't take a tour bus. If you and your wife are in relatively good shape, you should just walk the grounds by yourselves. Be sure to walk to the highest point which is Arlington House. From there, you'll have the best view of the area you've ever imagined.

Then, if the two of you are up for it, I recommend you walk back to DC over the Arlington Memorial Bridge. It's a hike, but if it's a nice day, I absolutely guarantee you'll have the time of your life, and see our Capital in a way that few ever do.

This is A LOT of walking, but it's well worth the effort.  ns

Noel I have eaten there as well.......

and the food and service are fantastic.  If your into Chardonay, I recommend  their house wine, "Three Vines Naked Chardonay" a really tasty wine.  We were in DC in January to bury my father in Arlington Cemetery.  You right, the best way to really appreciate Arlington is to do it on foot

B,

The best way to appreciate the entire city is on foot. It's a spectacular walking city. That's why regardless of how much I eat when I'm there, I always lose weight. :-) ns

Noel.....when we were there.....

my wife and I did just that, however it was soooooooo COLD, I thought I was going to turn into a popsicle.  I have a picture of my wife and I in front of the WW2 Memorial, you can see the ice hanging off one of the monuments, and our faces beat red from the cold.  I've been to a lot of places, Canadian Rockies, etc.  I never experienced cold like that, bone chilling cold.

B,

April. Just missed the cherry blossom peak. Unfortunately, it rained heavily a few days before I got there, and most of the blossoms were gone. Pretty good weather for April, though.  ns

Time your visit at the Cemetery's Tomb of the Unknowns to observe the changing of the guard. While the dedication and precision of the guard on post alone is impressive, the change more than doubles it.

The 4th of July is a great

The 4th of July is a great opportunity to experience the thrill of "the diversity of progressives". The annual gathering of moonbats to celebrate the anniversary of this nation full of race-rapers, earth-destroyers, and baby-killers is bound to be a visual treat (not to mention olfactorily dazzling!)...

On a more serious note, you

On a more serious note, you cannot go to DC (especially if you are near Georgetown) without going to 3607 M St. NW to see this.

I am begining to wonder about you sometimes. Were you in the movie Summer School playing the part of Chainsaw? You like to blog about the wierd and morbid.
