One idea we DON'T need

Is putting a man on Mars despite this vast and growing sea of red ink. It was a bad idea because it cost too damn much when Bush proposed it, and nothing's changed now that McCain has jumped on board.

C'mon! You can't think of one man you'd like to put on mars?

Or woman?

Maybe NASA could have a candy bar sale to finance the trip. I'll let you fill in the blank which bar would be best.

If it were possible by waving a wand, sure.

But it's only possible with either more tax and spend or more borrow and spend. Even then, if it happens and the mission actually works, Mars is likely to be declared government property with all the laws and woes that entails. I kinda like the idea of Mars being privately owned by the first rich capitalist who can somehow get there & survive it, but the idea of spending more money on manned space flight is bad. We get SO much more science from the robots, so if government must do something they should send more robots IMO.

Yes, I agree that right now

Yes, I agree that right now would be a bad time to spend wads of green on space travel. However, I be interested to know where that money would be spent. If the budget remains 80% spent here in the U.S., on parts, employment, etc., then it's not so much throwing away money as it is investing.

Of course, I'd also want to know the value of putting a human on Mars, and if it's truly worth the risk and the cost. I've seen too many movies and Twilight Zones where these types of missions end badly... or ironically.

Investing isn't what obese governments do.

I know. I live near the Cape, NASA central. It's politcally driven, not market driven. And the truly ironic part is that people have come to believe as an article of faith that it's not possible for capitalists to do, cheaply & reliably, what obese governments often fail to do, expensively. And please note, I say this as the son of not one but 2 early NASA employees.

Mars

Don't worry, there is already a private group working on this. Of course, it is impossible with today's technology, the cosmic rays will kill you before you arrive.
