It's a huge weekend for sports fans:
- The Granddaddy of all races, who'll win Indy tomorrow?
- Can the Celtics actually win one on the road?
- Do the Spurs have a prayer heading home?
- Is this the best NHL final matchup in decades?
- Lefty's looking good at the Colonial.
- Baseball union agrees to new drug testing policy.
- Will Federer finally win at Roland Garros?
- NASCAR Sprint Series continues at Lowe's on Sunday.
Did I miss anything?

For those wondering, there's no college track this week. NCAA regional finals begin next Friday. Yes, I'll be there!!!
For those that have been following my son's progress -- your support is greatly appreciated -- here's a picture from last Sunday's Big 12 Championship that has been making me cry all week:
That's Brandon on the left, Paul Hamilton, Brandon's BFF on the right (took third, currently eighth in the nation!), and Dusty Jonas in the middle (currently #1 in the world, will likely represent America in the Olympics this summer!!!).
Can you imagine what this moment must have been like for my son? <wipes a tear> ns
That is a great picture Noel
May 24, 2008 - 10:28 ET by Dee BunkCongrats on you son's success. How thrilling it must be for him to not only have personal success but also have a friend to root for in the Olympics. Very exciting.

Go Big 12. Be proud and don't worry about the tears. I know the feelings from my own children. They grow up too fast and life is too short. But live it to the fullest while you can.

Having been born and raised
May 24, 2008 - 10:27 ET by msh1973Having been born and raised in Indiana, I am a huge Indy fan. When I was a kid I wrote to Mario Andretti, I received an autographed photo which I still have to this day. My dream when I was about 12 was to be the first woman to drive in the race. My dream didn't come true....but today I am hoping that Danica Patrick wins.
I've always followed Sara
May 25, 2008 - 05:12 ET by Gary P JacksonI've always followed Sara Fischer. Really thought she was gonna be first. She's never had the good rides like Danica. (who needed 50 starts to close the deal)
Sara's having a tough time this year. The sponsor crawfished, which unfortunately happens too many times. Anyhow she's racing on her family's dime kind of a sentimental favorite.
It will probably be Dixon or Castroneves who drinks the milk though.
We had our latest Funny Car winner, Melanie Troxel, the first woman to win in both Top Fuel and Funny Car. Only 13 other men have done that, including her husband, Tommy Johnson Jr.! Anyhow, the two of them were at the Indy breakfast today. Many drag racing teams are based in Brownsburg, and with all of the fans in town, they opened the shops up.
I love this weekend every year. Sprint Cars from LMS last night, the Trucks this afternoon. The Nationwide cars tonight, Formula One from Monaco, really early in the morning, and then Indy! And of course the 600 miler for desert! This looks like the best Indy in a long time. I am pumped!
What excites me the most, is Jim Nabors is well enough to sing "Back Home In Indiana" I've not been to the 500, but I have been to the track, while in town for the US Nationals a few years back. Every time I hear that song I choke up, and get misty eyed. Nabors is as much a part of Indy as the Borg-Warner trophy, and the dairy farmer's bottle of mike!
Say, do you ever go to Claremont Labor Day weekend for the US Nationals? Raceway Park also has a cool paved short track.
Gary, I live in Florida
May 25, 2008 - 16:35 ET by msh1973Gary,
I live in Florida now, so I haven't been to the race in few years. I think I have the best seat in the house...my big screen TV and the couch. LOL!
I also choke up when I hear "Back Home Again In Indiana".
I am mainly an Indy type racing fan, so I haven't had the pleasure of visiting the track you speak of.
I hear ya on the big
May 25, 2008 - 18:03 ET by Gary P JacksonI hear ya on the big screen!
The track in Claremont has the drag strip, and a paved short track. They used to run USAC Sprints there every Thursday night, back in the day when ESPN had "Thursday Night Thunder". It's where non- NASCAR folks first saw a 16 year old Jeff Gordon just wear everyone out!
Been to many drag races all over the country, racing as well as watching, but never been to the 500, too big of a crowd. I love short track racing, and WoO Sprints though.
I like NASCAR on TV, but went to my first, only and last one in person when they opened the new track in Ft Worth. I fell asleep in the stands!
I'm not a huge Danica fan, and the hype makes it worse, especially knowing the real history of women racers in our sport. But it killed me to see her get knocked out like that. She was gonna at least have her average kind of finish.
I felt for Sarah Fisher. Man, that may have finished them off for the season.
You gotta check drag racing out. Especially professional drag racing. Nothing compares with the shear power and speed.

Best high jump coach in America is at K-State. Right now, he's working with Scott Sellers, Jim Dilling, and Jessie Williams to get them ready for the Olympic trials.
Sadly, Scott has had a terrible year, and Jim has been a bit injured. Of course, Jessie's a friend of my son's, and anything that helps him get to the Olympics is fine. But, I'd like to see us field the best three in the nation to be able to compete this summer.
High jump in recent years has been dominated by Europeans where this event is a sport on its own. I'd love to see an American change that to bring attention to an event that is largely ignored here. ns
I'm with you
May 24, 2008 - 11:19 ET by expatriotNoel,
I would love to see the US field a track and field team that could blow out the rest of the world in all of the disciplines. I am in Europe and have to watch the european televised track and field. It gives a different view and I swear the rest of the world is so jealous of us.
I would like to see those guys make the team and make it to the medal rounds. Then when I watch Sky and have to listen to everyone cry and whine I can sit back and say I know where they come from.
Thanks for the information on KSU. I have been away since 2003 so its good to hear how the kids are doing.
And its good to see your son and his friends wearing the medals. Keep the picture up. The response is very positive.

That's my fault. When I went to the ESPN NASCAR page, it was featuring Indy. As a result, I just assumed there were no NASCAR events this weekend. My apologies. ns
Yeah, the Charlotte race is
May 25, 2008 - 07:08 ET by Gary P JacksonYeah, the Charlotte race is a tad younger than Indy!
The big deal used to be, guys like Tony Stewart, Robby Gordon, and others would run both. They would literally get out of the Indy car, get hooked up to an IV for fluids, hop on a helicopter to the jet, fly to Charlotte, chopper into the track, change uniforms and drive another 600 miles!
They've stopped that as the NASCAR money has gotten so big, and NASCAR has a long standing rule that if you miss the Sunday morning drivers meeting, you have to start in the back. It became not worth the effort. But twice, Tony Stewart finished in the top five in both races. As a friend of mine used to say "much man"!
I'm a life long drag racer,
May 25, 2008 - 06:55 ET by Gary P JacksonI'm a life long drag racer, who recently quit driving. I've worked a lot of events and announced a heck of a lot.
When we were racing hot and heavy, NASCAR was still a regional sport, and not on our radar.
If we had the time, we made a lot of sprint car races, and was actually at the very first World Of Outlaws event over in Mesquite, Tx. We were in town for our race, and had time to kill.
I have ALWAYS loved Indy cars. When I was like 5 or 6 the TV package wasn't all that good, but our local radio station covered it live. I would listen to the radio and imagine those drivers getting it on.
I thought the split was the right thing to do. But it ended up hurting both parts. The re-consolidation will make the IRL very strong.
When I was growing up, fan wise, open wheel, and NHRA drag racing were at the top of the food chain. Of course back then USAC was the sanctioning body for open wheel. So the drivers had to race in the dirt driving midgets, sprints, silver crown, as well as the Indy cars, to win a championship. That was a great time to be a fan!
I like NASCAR nowadays. I REALLY like the car they are racing in Cup now. Perfect car. A lot safer for the driver. I can't believe Kyle Busch. Man he was trouble over at Hendricks. Maybe he's matured, maybe it's Coach Gibbs, but that kid is driving relatively clean, and seems unstoppable!
NHRA is off this weekend, which is smart. Too much competition for viewers. However the winningest driver in history will be in Charlotte and get some air, probably on the warm up show. John Force and Darrell Waltrip go way back. They both used to be sponsored by Mountain Dew.
Force's newest driver, Mike Neff, who was a World Championship winning crew chief, is in his rookie year this year, is in Charlotte to help promote the new drag strip between the dirt track and the speedway. It will be finished in time for it's September NHRA race.
Anyhow, Mike will show the fans the meaning of the word burnout before the race. He will burnout down the pit road with his 8000 hp Funny Car. In drag racing, every driver does a burnout before the run, to clean the tires, and heat them up. Neff's motor makes more horsepower in one cylinder than a Cup car's entire motor!
I guess I am in the selling mood today. I always am about racing! anyone who hasn't, must check out our sport. With all of the NASCAR craziness, which is great, regular folks miss the fact that NHRA drag racing is second in fans and TV viewers only to NASCAR. We pull in more viewers than the IRL, WoO, and F1(in America) combined.
NHRA is the largest motorsports sanctioning body in the world, and their events are different. Professionals and the best Sportsman racers in the country all show up to race. Obviously it's two at a time, and after the Top Fuel and Funny Cars make their 335 mph runs, they go back to their pits and service the car, There is a 75 minute turnaround rule, but in about 30 minutes, the teams will have stripped the car, completely rebuild the engine, service the clutch, and make tuning adjustments! Kinda makes a NASCAR pit stop look lame! After that rebuild, they fire the car, and get ready to run, and then do it all over again!
The best is, unlike NASCAR, or Indy, in the NHRA, every ticket is a pit pass. You can get there early like Friday, and have a smaller crowd to fight, but whenever, you can get withing a few feet of the car, and all of the drivers sign tons of autographs. And, if there isn't a big crowd, and they aren't need, they will spend time with you. Lot of bang for the buck.
Now, if you are like me, and lazy, and have already made the rounds in the pits for the past two days at the event, you will stay seated, because after a round of pros run there are 7 other eliminators. Some have one kind of car, and are heads up. Some eliminators have many classes, a lot of variety, that race with a handicap start, the slower car, getting a head start. The upper classed Stock cars, and most of the Super Stock cars leave wheel ups,and a few have been known to drag the back bumper! The hard core fans might go to the bathroom, or get something to eat while the pros run, but are glued to their seats when the sportsmen run! That racing is very intense.
I love all the Indy hype around Danica. It's very amusing. We had our first female national event winner 42 years ago! Shirley Shahan was a great racer in the sportsman classes. 32 years ago, we had our first professional winner. Shirley Muldowney won her first race. The next season, she won her first world championship, driving in Top Fuel. At the time NO driver had ever won more than one Top Fuel championship in the history of the sport! So the next year she fixed that problem, and had won her third championship before anyone else go that second one! Shirley had a movie made about her life,"Heat Like a Wheel" Bonnie Bedelia, who played Bruce Willis' wife in the "Die Hard" movies played Shirley and Beau Bridges played racer Connie Kalitta, who has one of the largest fleets of 747s to move speciaty freight in the world, and was Shirley's mentor, and of again on again boyfriend! Great movie and Amazon has it.
Connie still races. He just had a birthday and he went north of 70. but he still runs the teams. His son Scott, a two time world champion, races in Funny Car, and Connie's nephew Doug, an accomplished sprint and midget racer, races Top Fuel along with Dave Grubnic, from Australia, and Hillary Will, the fastest woman in the sport with a run at over 336 mph!
In drag racing, women race in every single eliminator. From the 4.5 second 335 mph Top Fuel cars and Funny Cars (as the late great Steve Evans once said in a commercial hawking a Funny Car match race: "dumb name, but so's Boy George, and he's doing OK!") To Pro Stock, which burn gasoline, and looks like a regular car and has doors. Women are especially good at racing Pro Stock Motorcycle, and as a sportsman motorcycle racer, I love it! We have had many women winners on these 6 second 190 mph rides. Including the winningest woman in drag racing, Angelle Sampey, who has three world championships. She's a former beauty queen, and weighs about 100 lbs with leathers and helmet! Heck of a nice person too!
T/F and F/C racers pull more G's than the astronauts in the space shuttle on take off! Plus Funny Cars never go straight, even when they look like they are. They are the hardest cars to drive in all of motorsports.
Our last gender barrier came the week after Danica's win. Ashley Force, who's dad John is the winningest drag racer ever, was a win looking to happen. She was already a multi national event winner in her 270 mph sportsman dragster, winning Indy, at the same time John got a win, so they shared the stage! She also won a championship that year.
Anyhow, after getting pro rookie of the year last year, she came into Atlanta after being in the two previous final rounds, and had the points lead. So third time was the charm, and the last major barrier was broken! It was a big final too. She was racing her dad, and he wasn't gonna cut her any slack, because, while she was going for her first round win, John was going for his historic 1000th round win. Ashley took him out!
Last week Melanie Troxel became the second woman to win in F/C, but the first woman to win in both T/F and F/C. There are only 13 other drivers who have done that, one being her husband, who races F/C for another team!
Anyhow, I'm wearing you guys and gals out! You can tell I'm pumped for today! Anyhow, pardon the long rant!

World 600
May 24, 2008 - 12:06 ET by ricklailHaving grown up 30 miles northwest of Charlotte there was only one race on Memorial Day, the longest of the NASCAR races, the World 600. I think I remember something else going on at Indianapolis. I read in the paper were Graham Rahal said that NASCAR had peaked. Yeah in your dreams. With Bruton Smith in the process of buying Kentucky Speedway, look for the big boys to be racing there maybe as early as next year. Can the IRL boast the number of races and tracks like NASCAR? Don't think so. How many cars do they have show up for races other than the 500? Maybe 20 if they are lucky. Does the IRL championship pay any where near what winning the Sprint cup pays? I don't think so. They have one big race. NASCAR has many with the Daytona 500 being the biggie. If you look at the new tracks being built are they being patterned after Indy? Most of them are patterned after Charlotte.
Who is going to win at Indy? Who cares. It will between maybe 6-7 drivers. Who is going to win at Charlotte? There are 43 cars starting with 30 or better of those having a chance at the checkered flag.
NASCAR rules and so does the Coke a Cola World 600!

May 25, 2008 - 07:16 ET by Gary P JacksonHey Rick, a couple of questions.
First, what about that Sprint Car race Friday night at the dirt track? And what about that fight in the pits after Denny Hamlin just ran up and hit the 88 car? It looked like one of those old fashioned bench clearers you see in baseball every now and then. Of course, ESPN the worst sports network, pulled away from the battle, about the same time it got good!
Second, we are hearing Humpy is calling quits at the track, and quits with SMI, because he is po'd about the state of the art drag strip they are building there. What's the 411?

In the season series with the Pistons, Boston lost the first game, in Boston, in December-by only 2 points. They won that game with 1/10 of a second left in the game, when Chauncey Billups made two free throws.
In the game at Detroit, in January, the Celts won by 7.
And in their final meeting in Boston, in March, Boston blew them out by 12. That win allowed the Celts to be the first NBA team to clinch a playoff spot.
