For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Indy's Back!
For almost 20 years, Hollywood has been waiting for the next instalment in the money-spinning Indiana Jones adventure series. Indy is back this week – and even an ageing Harrison Ford can still crack an impressive box office whip... The real pleasure for series fans may lie not so much in the madcap action, the carnivorous bugs and the familiar perils of quicksand, but the restored romance between Ford and Allen, and the fatherly relationship that develops between Ford and LaBeouf, who is clearly the new pretender to his whip.
Full disclosure: I'm a HUGE Indiana Jones fan, and am more excited about his return than any new continuing series installment since Godfather II. Anybody else as pumped, or is this just likely another Hollywood blockbuster undeserving of the attention it's getting?

Great video!
May 18, 2008 - 09:34 ET by motherbeltI've been waiting for the OT today so that I can share this. Michelle Malkin has a video (she doesn't say where it came from ) that she dedicates to Michelle Obama. Not the Tennessee GOP one; below that is another embedded right on the page. It's called Do I Make You Proud? and it's lump-in-the-throat beautiful.

I forwarded it to my son's best friend Jonathan who is a Marine. He is out in 29 Palms getting for deployment to Iraq.
I love him as if he was my own son. I loved this video and asked him to share it with all his mates serving with him.
then I forwarded the link to the rest of my crew.
Thanks to you and Michelle Malkin.

May 18, 2008 - 09:34 ET by ThisnThatThe Indiana movies inspired my son to buy his own hat, whip, and other getup. The store-bought whip, of course, fell apart quickly. So, we went out and bought the expensive materials so he could make his own whips. Pretty soon, the entire neighborhood contracted him to make whips for them, too. Good times.

I don't know how you can top Sean Connery's contribution (both the acting and the writing were excellent), but I'm looking forward to #4. I have a good friend whom I hadn't seen in a while. She drank all of the kool-aid about AGW. We calmly and cogently took her worldview (composed of media-based lies, I might add) of polar bears drowning and glaciers melting apart. One more convert to the right side of things.
Do the same thing. It doesn't matter what liberal twitism is being expounded. Government healthcare? "Please prove to me one thing that the government does better than private industry". Like that. And be sure to expose the media bias each and every time. If you can get someone to start to do their own thinking, instead of swallowing the MsM drivel hook, line & sinker, they'll naturally gravitate to a conservative position.
Hope that helps. We survived eight years of Bill Clinton, we'll survive Obama if the worst happens. It'll be ugly, we'll have rampant inflation and insane taxes, but we're getting that already.

IMMIGRATION: 2O YEARS OF NOTHING
May 18, 2008 - 12:46 ET by reelman46IMMIGRATION: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DO NOTHING FOR 20 YEARS!
Immigration Raid Jars a Small Town
Critics Say Employers Should Be Targeted
By Spencer S. Hsu, Washington Post Staff Writer, May 18, 2008
POSTVILLE, Iowa — Antonio Escobedo ran to get his wife Monday when
he saw a helicopter circling overhead and immigration agents
approaching the meatpacking plant where they both work. The couple hid
for hours inside the plant before obtaining refuge in the pews and hall
at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church, where hundreds of other Guatemalan
and Mexican families gathered, hoping to avoid arrest.
“I like my job. I like my work. I like it here in Iowa,” said Escobedo,
38, an illegal immigrant from Yescas, Mexico, who has raised his three
children for 11 years in Postville. “Are they mad because I’m working?”
Monday’s raid on the Agriprocessors plant, in which 389 immigrants were
arrested and many held at a cattle exhibit hall, was the Bush
administration’s largest crackdown on illegal workers at a single site.
Half of the school system’s 600 students were absent Tuesday, including
90 percent of Hispanic children, because their parents were arrested or
in hiding.
CRAWFISH NOTE: The individuals broke the law when they
entered the USA ILLEGALLY. Note how the liberal press ignores this fact
and wanders around topic-shifting to spin spin spin. Its been at least
20 years and the law is still the law…despite a failure to stop the
Mexican invasion. Now its the workers, boo hoo, its the families, boo
hoo, its the kids, boo hoo. So they “like it here”…so? If you really
liked it here you would have entered respectfully, that is… legally.
Now its always “somebody’s else” who is at fault, somebody else who
should be jailed, somebody else…how about somebody else paying the tens
of millions for the freebies instead of the U.S. citizen taxpayer?
Wanna hear my solution? Drop compulsory attendance for high schools,
expel the thousands of rowdy students who rob those wanting to learn.
They can do the “jobs Americans won’t do”… and the schools will shape
up in no time when educators are not losing 25-30% of all instructional
time to discipline. So start the busses back to Mexico and get that
fence done, pronto.

Enforcing the Laws
May 18, 2008 - 13:25 ET by GeneZIt has always been my contention that if we simply enforced the laws that were on the books, illegal immigration would lessen dramatically. As a manager for several different retail chains over the years, it was always standard policy to do an I9 form on which you had to do 2 different forms of ID, one of which had to be a social security card. Then those were kept on file in a separate file from employee files. It was always understood that you better be doing that or the company could be in violation of U.S. Law and have trouble with INS.
I recently saw a story where a person was killed by a man driving a dump truck who not only was an illegal immigrant, but had no drivers license. Now that I work for a trucking company I know that it is standard practice to make sure your drivers have a current CDL. I believe this company (& others who hire illegals) should be charged and fined to the full extent of the law. In the case of the illegal driver, they should get charged with at least being an accomplice to a negligent homicide.
Anyway, I'm not usually one for government involvement in business, but again, ENFORCE THE LAW and we wouldn't have nearly the problem that we have now.
-
May 18, 2008 - 14:11 ET by dahliatraversif we simply enforced the laws that were on the books, illegal immigration would lessen dramatically
That's exactly correct. And that's where John McCain and others who call for immigration reform and seem to sincerely believe it is needed are profoundly wrong.
The failure to enforce existing laws led to the current problem. Only enforcing those laws will bring us towards a resolution. Anything else is thinly disguised pandering to a group that may or may not even vote.

May 18, 2008 - 17:40 ET by BlondeAgreed, John McCain needs to have a true conservative as a running mate. But after his little Global Warming policy statement this week, I believe he truly doesn't care if he antagonizes us or not.
I'd like to see him pick Michael Steele. But he'll do his maverick thing, proudly. Perhaps disasterously.

The choice between those 2, for McCain
May 18, 2008 - 17:50 ET by sarcasmoIs "do I reward a fellow RINO I happen to owe bigtime, or a fiscal conservative I really owe nothing?"
I think his answer will be to give the VP slot to a fellow RINO, and Sarah Palin just doesn't fit the bill IMO. McCain is likely to choose a Huckabee, a Rudy, or a Charlie Crist. And if it's Crist, that means the time-bomb hurricane of Florida's now-socialist insurance business needs to hit this season, in order to put the consequences of his socialism under this RINO governor's administration.

I was 11 when I saw Raiders
May 18, 2008 - 11:47 ET by muh-oonI was 11 when I saw Raiders and it has been my favorite film ever since. I wanted a whip so bad after seeing the first one, and I found an old
buggy whip in our garage. I whipped on to a tree branch in our yard and
swung on it, but it was dead and broke off. I landed on the ground and
it landed on my head. I sat there groggy for a while, but ok. I was careful to pick good branches after that, but the whip really did attach to branches well, allowing me to swing and then flip it up to un-attach it- similar to in the movies.
The other films don't come close to Raiders but they have moments that bring back the feeling of the original, so I am very much looking forward to the new one especially to see Karen Allen as Marion again.
