Come on, Noel...
May 18, 2008 - 10:06 ET by SyriusNoel,
We all have our disdain for Billary. I know there is a high level of hatred for Bill on this site. I just found your comment somewhat inappropriate. I'm sure if a future picture of President Bush and his daughter showed up on a Huffpost or DailyKos with a comment like that, you would be all over it. I think you would agree we can be funny without lowering ourselves to their level...

Syrius
May 18, 2008 - 10:21 ET by Noel SheppardSyrius,
I could post the lyrics to "The Star Spangled Banner" here, and you would find it inappropriate. As such, I will reserve judgement as to whether or not this has crossed the line of decency by what others possessing less hatred for NB have to say. If people whose opinions I respect agree with you, the caption, which can be taken a lot of ways rather than the one you apparently jumped on, will be deleted. ns
As Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. once stated...
May 18, 2008 - 12:07 ET by SyriusNoel,
"Every idea is an incitement. It offers itself for belief
and if believed it is acted on unless some other belief outweighs it or
some failure of energy stifles the movement at its birth. The only
difference between the expression of an opinion and an incitement in
the narrower sense is the speaker's enthusiasm for the result.
Eloquence may set fire to reason. But whatever may be thought of the
redundant discourse before us it had no chance of starting a present
conflagration. If in the long run the beliefs expressed in proletarian
dictatorship are destined to be accepted by the dominant forces of the
community, the only meaning of free speech is that they should be given
their chance and have their way."
As an associate editor of NB, I would think you would be above a "somewhat inappropriate" comment. As I have said- if an associate editor of the HuffPost or DailyKos had made a similar comment in regards to President Bush and one his daughters, you would have risen to the occasion and seized the opportunity to expose and combat the bias. You now wait for an opinion from those who will always support you...to speak against you and support me. I won't hold my breath. Sorry to point it out in the first place...

May 18, 2008 - 12:16 ET by Noel SheppardSyrius,
Your protestations would be taken absent a grain of salt if you didn't regularly present yourself as nothing but a liberal antagonist at these message boards. That is INDEED the role YOU'VE chosen here, and you revel in it. As such, the high road is by no means something you have access to regardless of your shameless attempt to take it this morning.
That said, your Bush and his daughters analogy is valid, and is enough for me to delete this caption. ns
Your not sorry at all
May 18, 2008 - 12:39 ET by CobraMan"I won't hold my breath. Sorry to point it out in the first place..."
You're not sorry at all. As a matter of fact, I don't think you even care about what Noel posted. You just want to argue because it would be boring if you didn't.
You've said this yourself in another thread earlier this week: "If all debate ceased on this site it would be boring as all get out."
You also said that you're not concerned about personal attacks: "I don't really care about offensive personal attacks, I'm not allowed to punch back with the same vigor (it's a little one sided on this site)."
Then you exposed your true motives, playing the devil's advocate, arguing for the sake of arguing: "I'll play devil's advocate just to get some of these posters to start thinking and possibly realize there is always another side to their argument."
All this shows me that you're not interested in debate, you're not interested in the topic at hand, and you're not interested in what someone says or believes. You're only interested in arguing and bashing conservatives, a motive that you try to hide by claiming that it‘s done for the sake of “others.”. I believe this is just an expression of some latent hostility you have against conservitives as you admitted that "I was one of you back in my past."
I'm glad you waited Noel
May 18, 2008 - 14:06 ET by Dee BunkI didn't see what you posted so obviously I have no opinion one way or the other but I think you were right to wait until a conservative complained
None of us claim to be perfect and if Syrius, Jason, Shawn, Baloba, Cleverpig, Jer and the many other liberals who come here had any real concern about changing any tone then they would be spending their efforts criticizing the much more regular and egregious attacks by liberals.
If they like the standard that Newsbusters has, and come here rather than filthy sites like Huff Po, then that is great, but then they should go over to Newsbusted on Youtube and shoot down their nasty bretheren who post tons of nasty attacks that include profanity, inappropriate sexual innuendo, name calling and everything else.
Those same people who complain to you about what you just said (again I don't know what it was) are the same ones who would call or imply that you or others of us are prudes if we complained about them. I'm really sick of the way they manipulate this site.
We have no voice in the media like they do. It would be easy to be them and claim some sort of higher ground when others were out there doing our dirty work for us. This site is better than all of theirs despite that fact and their fake criticism of us is getting very old.
Dee
May 18, 2008 - 14:29 ET by Noel SheppardDee,
Well, in the grand scheme of things, my caption was very tame. VERY. However, it could have been taken a number of ways, and the one that most people would have opted for was clearly off-color. Although that's what makes good satire funny, after receiving responses from several of our readers, including one of the left-leaning ones I respect, I decided to yank it solely because I am the associate editor. If someone not affiliated with the MRC had posted the same caption, nobody would have had any problem with it. Make sense? ns
Glad to hear it Noel.
May 18, 2008 - 14:35 ET by Dee BunkI assume when you say "Nobody would have had any problem with it" you mean the NB staff.
I'm sure there would have been people complaining about it no matter what. I have no doubt that even more of the liberal regulars here would have jumped on it if someone besides yourself had said what ever it was.
Dee
May 18, 2008 - 14:44 ET by Noel SheppardDee,
The folks responding to my PMs in the "yank it" camp felt the over-riding factor was my position as AE. They didn't find the caption offensive, just felt that it could be used against me or the site in the future because of my position.
For the record, the vote was 3-1 for me to yank it, and as these were all people whose opinion I respect, that's all I needed.
In the end, I was hoping that because this was a weekend captionfest I'd be allowed to let my hair down. Sadly, such is not the case. :-) ns
And that is good Noel - you do have a certain image
May 18, 2008 - 15:22 ET by Dee Bunkand I'm sure you like to maintain it. It's great and there is nothing wrong with it. I was thrilled to see you stick up for WTH the other day because some of these liberals here like to equate his more aggressive style to the trashy nature of those on the Daily Kos and Huff PO etc... You and Warner couldn't be more different and I love you both.
I'm sick of the attacks on Warner and on posters. We all have different personalities here and the very fact that Warner engages those self righteous hypocritical snobs is a testament to his character. He could just delete their comments. He doesn't because he isn't as bitter as they are. He's just having fun.
I like and appreciate all of the different Newsbusters bloggers and love that their styles are all different. It's the same with the Newsbusters posters. Who wants to be in a boring world where everyone is the same?
People are most interesting being themselves and not trying to be someone else. Everyone is offended by something different. I hope Newsbusters always remains as a "big tent" kind of site and those who are easily offended by things don't have to come here.
All in all, I think this is
May 18, 2008 - 19:21 ET by CortillaenAll in all, I think this is a rather telling incident. Television is filled with (and I use this term loosely) people spewing hate, then calling it an attempt at humor in retrospect rather than apologizing (and nary a retraction to be seen). Here we had a conservative of considerably lesser celebrity status make a comment in a thread expressly designated for comedic captions to begin with, but when others in the community deemed it a step over the line, the comment was voluntarily retracted. Telling indeed.

May 18, 2008 - 12:31 ET by JerrySyrius,
There is a precedent for Bill Clinton with women his daughter's age. There is a precedent for Bill Clinton and womanizing. There is a precedent for Bill Clinton doing things behind his wife's back. There is a precedent for Bill Clinton pawing women without their consent. With George Bush, there isn't even a remote hint of such behavior. Good comedy is rooted in actual behavioral traits. Thus, jokes about W groping for a phrase or mangling a word are extremely funny. Likewise with jokes about Clinton acting inappropriately.
When asked if he went to war with Iraq to derail the impeachment vote: “I don’t think any serious person would believe that any President would do such a thing." - President Clinton (Dec 1998).
Jerry
May 18, 2008 - 12:41 ET by Noel SheppardJerry,
I agree, and considered that very fact. The reality is that Clinton philandering jokes exist and are funny because the man is a serial philanderer. By contrast, as you stated, there are no such accusations surrounding George W. Bush, and any comical representation of that would indeed be an attack and not humorous due to a lack of factual basis.
Regardless, this is still a former President deserving of respect, and though this is a captionfest where all should understand the attempts at humor, I could see how some might have felt it was over the top. So, it's gone. ns
Noel,
May 18, 2008 - 12:50 ET by JerryNoel,
I agree about presidential respect. But I have to admit, the first thing that popped into my head was a thought bubble over Clinton that said "Man, if only you weren't my daughter... but hey, it all depends upon what the meaning of weren't was".

Chelsea: " I love you too daddy. Daddy? I have to tell you something. While I have been interning, I have been doing this thing with my boss in his office- don't worry it's not sex, he told me it doesn't count as sex. I felt a little ashamed about it when everyone found out, but all of his co-workers said it didn't matter cause it didn't affect the way he did his job. Is it ok daddy?"
Bill"Define 'is' please."

May 18, 2008 - 16:25 ET by shawn228Have you had a rough few days at work or something? Your post have been very angry lately.
Is it the fact that Democrats are gaining more house seats? Seriously what gives? The tone of your posts are getting angrier an angrier.
You even apologized to Balboa for your tone the other day and now here you are making accusations against us again.
If you make accusasions, ie. 10 liberals usually jump in and attack a conservative. No one is telling you to do anything, If a liberal said conservatives on this site have no points and a bunch of neocons, surely you would ask me for evidence contrary wouldn't you?
I for one have always been respectful to Warner, I give as good as I get. I'm sorry you find I am attacking Warner, if I defend myself after he calls me a retard.
