What?

No track and field?

Up

Up,

It's pouring in Lincoln. So, they've moved the high jump competition indoors. As a result, the numbers mean nothing for the outdoor season. As such, Brandon was told not to jump, and, instead, rest up for next week's Big 12 Championship.

The good news is that this STRONGLY suggests he made the Conference team, which was one of his goals. We doubt his coach would suggest him taking the day off if he had not yet secured a position on that team. Fingers crossed!

That said, Brandon still needs to clear 2.10 next week to make it to the NCAA Regionals, which was goal number two. Stay tuned. ns

NS

Do you attend these meets or do you have the best cable (or satellite) system in the world.

Heck, I live in southern Michigan and I can't even get the Big Ten Network (through cable).

Up

Up,

I attended one of his winter meets, and recently watched a meet on the Internet. If he goes to the NCAA Regionals, I'll be there.

Next week's Big 12 meet will likely be available on the Internet, although I'm not sure I'll watch it. He seems to do better when I'm not paying attention, and this will be a HUGE meet for him. We'll see. ns

OK

Edmonds is gone, what do our Pads do now? Nobody's hitting and the pitching is nothing to write home about. Even Peavy can't win if the batters don't score.

Dare I hope?

Now that Maddux has finally gotten win number 350, will the rest of the team wake up? I'm not holding my breath.

They do better when I'm not paying attention, so I'm off to spend the day with the grandkids.

Baseball is here

We met my son and daughter-in-law from Nashville  in Atlanta this week and caught 2 Braves games against the Padres. Needless to say, since the Braves swept the series, a good time was had by all!

P.S. saw in the paper today the Padres released Jim Edmonds yesterday.

Darlington

Darlington is the last of what could be considered NASCAR in the old days. The Southern 500 was held there every Labor Day and even up until NASCAR took that date away, the track still had the old time charm. You can watch the drivers and owners chopper in and out at the Diamond Hill Plywood compound just outside of the track off of turn 4. I used to really be a true NASCAR fan until they started taking dates from the old southern tracks in favor of the cookie cutter new tracks in Chicago and California. Multi-car teams also ruined the sport in that they race more or less as teams and it has always been a individual sport. I can't blame Nascar for going for the bucks but they have alienated a lot of old time fans. The France family keeps the drivers so in line that there is very little true racing a la Junior Johnson or even Dale Earnhardt anymore. It is basically professional wrestling on wheels now. Too bad. Used to be a lot of fun!

Daytona native

I grew up in Daytona and went to one of the last "Beach Races" (I was selling programs, neat experience). Was at the first "500" at the new race track, yes I am older than dirt. When I left the Army in '63' I bought a house 1/2 mile from the track.

The drivers back then were just "Good ol' Boys". Although the racers of today are accessable, the sport has become too commercial.

Still enjoy it but would not go to a race, HD in my recliner is TOOOOO! comfortable.

Buford

My Grand-dad was Buck Baker's crew chief and my parents used to go down and watch the race when it was on the beach. There's too much money in it for the drivers for their to be any real action anymore. Why would they take the risk. Any of the drivers in the Cup are going to make millions. It's boring to watch anymore.

First I have to give a

First I have to give a friendly rebuttal to my fellow member Balboa, who has ragged on me about drag racing, saying nobody cared, and Indy racing was the big deal. I happen to have the ratings on both Danica's and Ashley Force's wins.

This comes from the Spin Doctor 500 blog written by Michael Knight, who is an extremely knowledgeable motorsports writer, with knowledge of all forms of racing. In his blog he laments, and asks the question: What would Winston do? As most know, Winston was a long time sponsor of both NHRA drag racing, as well as NASCAR Cup racing. Since Winston couldn't advertise on TV, they spent insane amounts of money on both NHRA and NASCAR promotion. RJR should be credited with bring both forms of racing to where they are now. They helped both bring in many, many corporate sponsors, from non-racing companies.

The blog is a must read for racing fans: http://spindoctor500...

But the meat of this story for me and Balboa is this:

" Danica Patrick's first post-win performance got a .74 rating on ESPN2.
That's up 164 percent from last year's dismal .28. Ashley Force's first
female Funny Car victory pulled a .89, an increase of 56 percent from
last year. That also was one of the network's best-ever NHRA ratings."

As you see, more people watched Ashley's win, both on ESPN2, and most certainly in person.

Ok enough of that!

It's pole day at Indy. Danica did her usually good job of sitting on the pole, for a short time. But as of now, Dan Weldon, a former 500 winner is on the pole. Now Danica (or anyone else) can go back and try to better their qualifying spot, which is taken from the average speed of your 4 lap run. The catch is, if you elect to re-qualify, your first time is voided. So it's a risk. But I think Danica's team will give it another shot!

I was happy to see Smoke (Tony Stewart) win last night with the Old Spice car. Great driving on a really fast track.

Tonight is gonna be a good race. Wouldn't count Stewart out to double up.

If that's not enough, Connie Cohen will be on the Discovery Channel tonight. She races in Pro Stock Motorcycle, with her 7 second, 190 mph Buell. She's on a show called "Mean Green Machines" and will race against an electric drag bike. I've not seen the show, but if it's the bike I have seen, she'll have some competition. The TV times are 7 pm and 11 pm central time. Should be fun to watch, just have the BS filter handy when the global warming speech comes!

All in all, a ton of good racing today, as Pole day continues to 5pm, followed by the Cup race at 6 pm central.

My Astros be rollin'.

My Astros be rollin'. Puma's barrelling, El Caballo's galloping, and Tejada (no good animal nickname) is...Tejadaing? The Sports pundits who actually bother to realize that Houston is a city with a baseball team have taken note that this could be a team in contention, if the pitching stays.

LE

LE,

Tejada is, and always will be, Miggy. Pass it around Houston, for we in the Bay Area miss our Miggy...badly.

Please treat him well, for there's none like him. ns

We've noticed that. And

We've noticed that. And yes, the moniker of Miggy has followed him here. I was just commenting on the fact that Berkman and Lee both have animal nicknames (Berkman's 'Big Puma' was coined by himself - he was tired of being called 'Fat Elvis.')

I was one of the few in Houston who thought it was a good trade, even when the Mitchell Report came out. And I seem to be one of the few who is being proved right.

Tell me, is the Force still with Luke Scott?

IB on hat

I'd like to know what the IB stands for on Paul Goydos' hat.  I know I've seen the logo someplace before but can't remember where.
