For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: not a good night for Hillary.
Sure, she won in Indiana, but not by much. And, North Carolina, no matter how you spin it, was a disaster.
Does she have to get out now? Will Democrat leaders start putting the pressure on her?
That's certainly not the way it looked during her "victory" speech last night in Indiana.
On another note: how much do you think Operation Chaos impacted the results in the Hoosier state?

I don't think operation chaos had much of a result in Indiana, but its something the liberal media will blame because instead of reporting the facts they just look where to put the blame, because it couldn't possibly be them that's the problem. Give me a break!

Operation chaos was enough to give her 51% of the vote. If not she probably loses by 3-5 points.

I'm beginning to wonder if it's a good idea for political campaigns to borrow money, especially considering the government's level of debt. There are all sorts of rules about money & campaigns, but there's nothing whatsoever in those voluminous rules about campaigns going into debt up to their eyeballs.

Mohammad then goes on to explain how the disciples actually crucified Judas Iscariot, sent Jesus away in hiding, and told everyone Jesus died and rose again.
So Jesus was not God in the flesh, was not sacrificed, and never did anything to save us from our sins.

May 7, 2008 - 09:34 ET by Hunter12I came late to the discussion about John Coleman and AGW, but I was researching something about the IPCC and found this item, which explains why the Global Warming debate is over.
"Nate Dowden had noted that there are 42 people in Colorado that had participated in the IPCC's report. He had contacted several of them to participate in this symposium, and they all declined to participate once they found out that there would be other participants who would be speaking to the AGW skeptic's point of view. Nate had emphasized to them that the forum would not be a debate, but that it would be an opportunity for them to relate their own role in how the IPCC came to their conclusions. Dr. Gray added that once the IPCC members find out that he, Dr. Gray, will be a part of a public discussion, they absolutely refuse to participate - they're afraid to debate."
They must not feel they have too solid of position to defend. This observation also appeared in the cited article:
"Dr. Gray offered a wager that in 5 to 10 years, we will see a cooling trend in the earth's climate and that there is current evidence that the cooling has already started."

Again
May 20, 2008 - 20:11 ET by UnsaneOnce again you fail miserably in your "refutation". For one thing, what I take from this is that Nat Hentoff, whoever the hell he is, does YOUR thinking FOR you.
Two, you still fail to refute the original premise. If you - or rather, Mr. Hentoff, since you clearly do not think for yourself - is correct, I should be able to open a wide open and painfully obvious "Unsane's Drug Store", selling every illicit drug under the sun. Then, when the neighbors complain and call the cops, the cops will roll up, look at the color of my skin, and walk away. IF you - I'm sorry, Mr. Hentoff - is correct, that is. Which, I am willing to bet he is NOT.
But then, that won't stop you from violently, painfully contorting yourself to turn a public health concern into a civil rights issue.
Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.
Nope.
May 20, 2008 - 20:17 ET by sarcasmoYou just didn't read the article. JMR

Obsession
May 20, 2008 - 21:51 ET by UnsaneThe racism is obvious from the stats, like it or not, and you're just unhinged because I keep giving examples of it, but you're slowly beginning to deal with it. Um, WHO is unhinged? I'm merely asking a very rational question you, typically, refuse to answer. If Mr. Hentoff is correct, then I should be able to peddle drugs without penalty due to my pastiness. But contrary to what he asserts, I am fairly certain that I will go to the slam for peddling drugs, and I am as pasty as they come. Why is that?
If anyone here is unhinged it is you, not I, due to your overwhelming obsession with drugs, an obsession so severe that you will contort yourself violently and into distinctly inhuman shapes in order to turn a public health concern into a civil rights issue. I merely pose a question and drop in an example, and I am unhinged??? Only in Sarcasmo's world.
Go down to your local jail, and look at what color faces you see. Shockingly, those who inhabit our jails, regardless of color, are there for a whole host of reasons, some having NOTHING to do with drugs. And I suppose, if I were inclined, I can go through some stats showing that some crimes are committed more by particular races/ethnicities than other crimes. But so what? If I were to find that more minorities go to the slam for murder than whites, does that mean that murder should be legalized?
Then think about the racism inherent in both the history Sweetie, I know you well and truly believe that the #1 reason for racism was drugs, keeping in line with your neurotic obsession with them, but LOTS OF LAWS WERE RACIST back in the day. In The Strange Career of Jim Crow, it is noted there were portions of some state constitutions that proscribed the emigration of blacks into said states (example). This is one reason why you are a laughably poor student of history: you take one's interpretation of history and run with it: so much the better if it fits neatly into your world view.
And, to quote Sarcasmo, "reading is fundamental". You have once again failed to remember my stated policy on links: I do not chase them because of some concept you pay complete lip service to called source evaluation. As I cannot effectively evaluate your links - or anyone else's - I do not read them. Now, remember that next time when you throw a link or 50 my way. Besides, I think it would be much better for a change for YOU to tell ME in YOUR OWN WORDS - as has been repeatedly demanded of me since I was eight or so - why you think as you do. If I wanted to know what Mr. Hentoff thinks, I'd read his article. As it does not tell me what Sarcasmo thinks, it does me no good in any case.
Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.
I've told you what I think, many times.
May 21, 2008 - 03:04 ET by sarcasmoThe idea that I need to put it in my own words instead of Nat's this time is you recycling one of your old saws that doesn't work. Nat's pieces prove beyond any doubt that tax and spend drugwar is racist, both in its history and in its present application. Here's even more proof, in the form of a video.
Your pastiness has nothing to do with it. Like it or not your self-example (while it is really stupid) proves nothing about the pervasive, longterm racism of the tax and spend drugwar. The stats at the end of the second link prove it for anyone who wants to read (which is probably why you have such vocal support here). After all, we all know know from your blinkered interpretation of history that all those extra black faces in US prisons are the result of screeching crazy-ass preachers & old newsletters, right? Well, it might just be widespread police "professionalism."
Guess what, "Sweetie"? The tax and spend drugwar's racist whether you like me saying it or not. That's why this subject causes you to be so unhinged whenever I bring it up. You've been repeatedly-refuted. Again.
JMR
The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.
Again
May 21, 2008 - 13:52 ET by UnsaneThe idea that I need to put it in my own words instead of Nat's this time is you recycling one of your old saws that doesn't work. That is only because you don't want to be troubled to critically think. It is a VERY effective - and accurate - old saw.
Your pastiness has nothing to do with it. Like it or not your self-example (while it is really stupid) proves nothing about the pervasive, longterm racism of the tax and spend drugwar. And you will whine and scream that the taxandspenddrugwarisracist for about two more months, in your bid to turn a public health concern into a civil rights issue (which amazingly fails every time I have seen it tried by you and others) until you realize it doesn't fly, then you'll hide it away for 6-8 months, and then you'll roll out the "Racist!" charge again when you think everyone has forgotten about it. I'm waiting for the day when you call thetaxandspenddrugwar is "sexist", is "stacked against such and such ethnicity", or whatever other excuse you can come up with. And calling my example "stupid" gets you nowhere. If Mr. Hantoff is correct, then I should be able to peddle drugs with NO PROBLEM because I am pasty. Yet, I know that if I start doing that, I will answer to the SAPD, Bexar County Sheriff, and the DEA. And I am as pasty as they come. So much for your constant bleating of "Racist!" Again, be a big boy and answer the question. If thetaxandspenddrugwar is so f#!king racist, then why am I just as prone to going to the slam for drugs??? VERY SIMPLE QUESTION. You whine that it is "stupid" because you both know, and hate, the answer to the question. That, and you fail miserably at critical thinking.
After all, we all know know from your blinkered interpretation of history that all those extra black faces in US prisons are the result of screeching crazy-ass preachers & old newsletters, right? Well, it isn't the 1960s anymore. Everyone in prison - no matter what race - volunteers to go. That you cannot accept that only shows me you lack critical thinking skills and constantly deny the existence of freewill as well.
Guess what, "Sweetie"? The tax and spend drugwar's racist whether you like me saying it or not. Well, if you just keep saying "thetaxandspenddrugwarisracist!!!" over and over again perhaps one day it will magically come true. That's why this subject causes you to be so unhinged whenever I bring it up. Um, please show me how I'm unhinged. (Takes another delightful puff of a cigar.) You've been repeatedly-refuted. Again. Nope. You brag (typical of an egomaniac like yourself) that you have refuted me, yet if you did, you would be a big boy and answer my question. Once again, to show how badly you have lost the argument, I will repeat the challenge:
If Mr. Hentoff - not you, for you cannot think for yourself - is correct, then why can't I set up Unsane's Drug Mart, where ALL of your favorite illicit drugs are available for sale! And THEN, when the cops arrive to shut me down, I merely show them my skin color, and they say "He's white. Leave him alone." If thetaxandspenddrugwar is SO RACIST, then why does the above not happen?
Humor me, sweetie. Show me how you are the SUPREME EXPERT in everything and answer that very simple question.

1) SHOW me where I am "unhinged". (Ah, let me guess. I am "unhinged" because I don't 100% universally agree with you at all times, no matter what. But you will need to do better than that.)
2) If the drug war is an evil, racist entity, then why is it that once I start up Unsane's Drug Mart, I can expect to go to The Slam for a long, long time? If it were as racist as Mr. Hentoff claims, I should be able to fire up Unsane's Drug Mart and merely walk up to ANY law enforcement authority and show them how pasty I am, which would result in their going away to, I suppose, arrest ONLY black/brown/whatever drug peddlers. YET, that's not what happens. Why is that?
3) As I cannot evaluate the source - a skill you pay complete lip service to - I don't click on the link - yours, or anyone else's. Others can click the link all they want. They are free.

You see the Dems have always been the racist, it is them whom bring it up and are keeping tabs. I know white trash down here that are still openly biggioted that will ONLY vote for Dems.

Hillary Clinton - Movie Star
May 7, 2008 - 10:03 ET by WoodyMThey need to make a movie starring Hillary Clinton, and they can use scenes from these past classics.
First is "Animal House" where the character played by John Belushi tries to rally the fraternity with "Over? Did you say over? It's not over until we decide it is."
The other is "Fatal Attraction," in which Glenn Close's psycho character says, "No, it's not going to stop. It's going to go on and on," as she destroys anyone keeping her from her prize. But, instead of killing rabbits, Hillary kills cats.
If you think the GOP is AWOL in all this, you would be right.

May 7, 2008 - 10:37 ET by R D HelmThey just don't know it yet.
Up until about three days ago, I thought McCain was going to have a pretty good chance against whichever dem takes the field in the general election.
The more I see of what he is doing, the more it appears that he is headed for defeat in November. He has done next to nothing to really distinguish himself from the dems he will be facing.
Many of my conservative friends have informed me that, should McCain show up at the La Raza event, they will consider that the proverbial last straw and either stay home or vote libertarian. If McCain is smart, he will bow out of appearing before those hideous people, and fast. Somehow, I don't think he is that smart.
What is worse, no matter who the dem candidate ultimately is, 90%+ of the black vote is still going to go for the dems. Even if it is Hillary. Sure, some will stay home, a handful might even vote for McCain but, at the end of the day, they will mostly "run home to mamma." Old habits die hard.
McCain's only real chance now is that his opponent self-destructs shortly before the election.

The results in yesterday's two primaries have confirmed my worst fears about the gullibility of many members of our electorate. The "stupid factor" is going to loom large in this election, and will be extremely difficult for the castrated republicans to overcome.
When you factor in McCain, who seems to spend more time attacking his own party rather than the dems, and who is about as painfully weak a candidate as it gets, well, let's just say that it is really difficult to raise any real optimism here.

Because McCain was not born in the US (and therefore apparently Constitutionally ineligible for the Presidency), but is the candidate the Elector is obligated to vote for, the Elector could sue for disenfranchisement.

Questions
May 8, 2008 - 02:41 ET by UnsaneBecause McCain was not born in the US (and therefore apparently Constitutionally ineligible for the Presidency)
Some simple, basic questions for you then:
1) Why is my sister not a German citizen? She was born in Germany, after all.
2) If this is the case, how come the AF isn't running an operation (let's call it Operation Patriot Stork) where expectant mothers who happen to be overseas as wives of military personnel, diplomats, and other government employees (example) aren't flown home regularly to give birth in the United States in order to ensure their children are U.S. citizens upon birth? And why wouldn't operations like that NOT have been going on for decades?
Hint: "You're in denial" is NOT an answer. "You're a McCain lover!!!" is likewise not an answer, and a lie as well.
Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.
Answer to Unsane
May 10, 2008 - 15:34 ET by Britcom1) Many European nations operate under the Roman Civil Law system; the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and other British Commonwealth nations operate under the British Common Law system. Roman Civil law citizenship passes by blood, or naturalization, British Common law citizenship passes by birth on sovereign soil, or naturalization. (naturalization is not natural birth even if it takes place "at" birth because naturalization is citizenship bestowed by virtue of a statute, not common law birth on the soil.
While a statute can supersede a common law precedent, statute cannot supersede a common law precept ensconced in the language of the Constitution. The Constitution, by design, always has supremacy over Congress, the President, and the Courts, because all three receive their authority from the Constitution (the Constitution is a Common Law Contract). The Constitution received its authority from the People, and the People received their authority from the King (via the Treaty of Paris which surrendered the American Colonies after the American Revolutionary War) and the King got his authority from God who owns the whole of the Earth and all of its inhabitants.
As long as the US Constitution exists unchanged, the British Common Law system will be the default law of the land where Constitutional law or Statute law do not speak.
2) Because the Constitution's "natural-born" disability applies EXCLUSIVELY to POTUS candidates; and only a Constitutional Amendment can remove it; and because the Congress hasn't offered such an amendment because they don't care if your foreign born children can qualify to be President some day.
John Jay wrote in the "natural born" clause and the rest of the Founders endorsed it. Jay apparently didn't want anyone with dual citizenship or dual loyalty to be eligible for POTUS. He probably assumed such a clause would insure that POTUS candidates would not have divided loyalties.
Those who disagree with John Jay's "natural born" clause, should not be arguing the unfairness of it, they should be campaigning for an amendment to remove it. An amendment is the only remedy available. Neither the Congress (through legislation), nor the Supreme Court can change the meaning of the Constitution, so appealing to them is pointless.
An Amendment may be proposed by either the people, or the Congress, but such an amendment requires ratification by a majority of the States before it could take effect.

Q. Is Panamanian born John McCain a "Natural Born Citizen"
Long on blather
May 11, 2008 - 03:14 ET by UnsaneLong on blather, short on answers to the questions.
I repeat myself (after modifying my first question for clarity):
1) Why is my sister (born to two U.S. citizens) not a German citizen, but rather, an American citizen? She was born in Germany, after all.
2) If this is the case, how come the AF isn't running an operation (let's call it Operation Patriot Stork) where expectant mothers who happen to be overseas as wives of military personnel, diplomats, and other government employees (example) aren't flown home regularly to give birth in the United States in order to ensure their children are U.S. citizens upon birth? And why wouldn't operations like that NOT have been going on for decades?
Hint: "You're in denial" is NOT an answer. "You're a McCain lover!!!" is likewise not an answer, and a lie as well.
As long as the US Constitution exists unchanged, the British Common Law system will be the default law of the land where Constitutional law or Statute law do not speak. Again, show me where this is WRITTEN. For one thing, the citizens of Louisiana will be very surprised to see this, as the basis of their law is NOT English commom law.
Really? You've missed out on some Supreme Court decisions of late then. Again, the second question is relevant here. Trust me, if military personnel were stationed overseas, and knew that if they had children overseas where they are stationed could not be citizens upon birth, you'd be hard-pressed to send people overseas. Likewise, the State Department would be SCREAMING for people to work for them. Hence horribly inconvenient things - for you - like laws that state, as much as you fight the reality of them, that birth to two U.S. citizens, regardless of where it happens, means that the child is born a U.S. citizen.
You are just going to have to find other means to get people to back your Populist, non-conservative Hero.
Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.
Breaking it down for Unsane (again)
May 11, 2008 - 12:17 ET by BritcomThe reason your sister is (apparently) not a German Citizen has to do with German law; which I have no knowlege of.
Apparently, (I say apparently, because I am relying on the information you have supplied for this example) the reason she is (now) a US Citizen, is because after she was born outside the US borders, she then qualified to obtain US citizenship via a statute that allows foreign born children to be naturalized immediately when they qualify for said statute's requirements.
Since she (and every other foreign born child of US Citizens) were naturalized shortly after birth and not natural born within the US, she (and the others) are ineligible for the Presidency, but she has virtually all of the other rights a natural born citizen would have.
In other words there are TWO kinds of US Citizens (1)Natural, and (2)Naturalized, just like the 14 Amendment says. Therefore both your sister and John McCain as Naturalized US Citizens, are of the second kind.
The reason expectant mothers of foreign serving government employees are not flown home to give birth is because it is too expensive to bother since less then one in a million of those children would ever seek the US Presidency, and Naturalized US Citizenship is good enough for the vast majority of them. (If you don't agree, then you should work for an amendment to change it.)
Following the American Revolution, one of the first legislative acts undertaken by each of the newly independent States was to adopt "reception statutes" that gave legal effect to the existing body of English Common Law. Some States enacted legislative reception statutes, while other States received the English common law through provisions of the State's constitution.
For example, the New York Constitution of 1777 provides that:
Other States that entered the union also adopted the English Common Law system (except for Louisiana)
Federal Law is also based on the English Common Law as stated in the Seventh Amendment:
At the time there was no other kind of common law but English Common Law so the reference is obviously to the English system.
You state:
Again, you fail mention which kind of US Citizen results from such laws as you refer to; Naturalized US Citizen, or Natural Born US Citizen.
The laws enacted by Congress result in Naturalized US Citizenship.
The Constitution prohibits such Naturalized US Citizens from qualifying for the Presidency by virtue of the Constitution's supremacy over Congresses' statutes and the Common Law concept of "natural born Citizen" it enlists to disable Naturalized US Citizens from obtaining that office.
You do your readers a disservice by obscuring my argument from that of "Natural Born US Citizen" to that of the more general but misleading "US Citizen".
Unlike you, I am always careful to specify the difference. Your failure to specify a difference misleads people into thinking that I maintain that those children of US Citizens born on foreign soil are not entitled to any kind of US Citizenship, I have always said they are Naturalized US Citizens with all the rights of Natural Born US Citizens, SAVE ONE, the right to hold the office of President, who's disability is enshrined in the US Constitution.

AGAIN, ad nauseum
May 20, 2008 - 20:22 ET by UnsaneSince she (and every other foreign born child of US Citizens) were naturalized shortly after birth INCORRECT. She was - and IS - a U.S. citizen upon her birth. Period. End of discussion. German law matters not here. Since both of her parents (and mine) were and ARE U.S. citizens, SHE is a U.S. citizen at the moment of birth.
If this is not the case, answer the question, as the United States military is totally beholden to U.S. law AND is crawling with legal officers:
Why is there not an operation - let's call it Operation Patriot Stork just for fun - where the expectant spouses of, say, U.S. service members , diplomats and the like flown home on the government dime to ensure their children will be U.S. citizens?
Unlike you, I am always careful to specify the difference. Your failure to specify a difference misleads people into thinking that I maintain that those children of US Citizens born on foreign soil are not entitled to any kind of US Citizenship, I have always said they are Naturalized US Citizens WRONG! It really is too damn bad for you that I have grown up with a Naturalized Citizen - my mother - and a U.S. citizen born overseas, NOT naturalized in ANY WAY, because she was BORN TO TWO UNITED STATES CITIZENS. So, unlike you, I know what I am talking about from direct personal experience. with all the rights of Natural Born US Citizens, SAVE ONE, the right to hold the office of President, who's disability is enshrined in the US Constitution INCORRECT. Again, since you are reading impaired, and painfully so, show me where specifically it says that the President MUST be born on the soil of the United States.
If only I could show you the AFN commercial - painful though it is (like ALL AFN commercials) - that explains this on the kindergarten level you need it explained at.
Is this because you hate military dependents, or because of your neurotic obsession with your Populist Hero?

Your argument is non sequitur...
May 21, 2008 - 01:16 ET by Britcomit rests entirely up your own say so.
Contrary to what some assume, the idea that "natural born" means "born of citizen parents" is a myth with no basis in US law. Read the case law I have provided at the link below and see. Your argument is called the "jus sanguinus" or "citizenship by blood" argument. The 14th amendment put an end to that notion and the courts have continued to reject it ever since. Either a citizen is natural born inside the US territorial borders, or he is naturalized.
Read the 14th amendment and the resulting case law and do your homework, site relevant examples of rulings by US courts of law to support your argument as I have done, rather than just repeating false assumptions and hearsay.

May 21, 2008 - 14:01 ET by UnsaneContrary to what some assume, the idea that "natural born" means "born of citizen parents" is a myth with no basis in US law. INCORRECT. My sister's birth certificate invalidates your entire paragraph. You simply will not trump my direct personal experience in this area. And spare me your shoddy attempts at Constitutional scholarship. And just answer the question.
If that is in fact the case, then why aren't expectant spouses of military/diplomatic/other government employees (or, to be fair to the ladies, perhaps the military/diplomatic personnel/government employees themselves as some are in fact women!) flown home to the United States to give birth on the government dime on a fictional program I like to call Operation Patriot Stork?
This isn't a non sequitor, as much as you wish to throw a tantrum and make it so. That is a very direct question. Bear in mind that such an operation should have been going on for decades IF you are correct - and the military, for one, is crawling with legal officers who know FAR more about the law and the Constitution than YOU do.
You will whine and scream that I'm in denial, that I love MCain, that my argument is a non-sequitor, only because I suspect you know the answer to the question...and you simply do not like the answer to the question.

Hillary only won Indiana by 18,500 votes. How many of them were "converts"? Had Obama won Indiana, the nomination would have been over. But, alas, the carnage continues. How does that strengthen Obama? Do you honestly think those "converts" will vote for Obama come November?

Racist, without a doubt. They already do it now when Hillary gets 60-70% of the white vote. Plus "racism" has more cache than "sexism".

May 7, 2008 - 19:06 ET by mandrakeNo not really. I think Americans will go with whomever they feel most comfortable with..and I don't think/feel Hillary or Obama fits the bill..due to their stand on things like Health Care, Iraq, other social issues.

The MSM is going to crucify McCain. Ugly, that will be.
What the American people are looking for is somebody who can solve their problems. - Barack Obama, April 27, 2008
RD you may well be right.
May 7, 2008 - 21:02 ET by mandrakeRD you may well be right. I'll have to wait for the debates to make my final guess. Bob Dole was up against Bill, who was very smooth. Hillary on her feet is no Bill. Obama, while a gifted speaker, has some problems (Wright...too left wing) to deal with.
mandrake, McCain has all the charisma of a potted plant.
May 7, 2008 - 21:27 ET by R D HelmThe MSM is going to go after him with both barrels. Hell, they will probably invent a quad-barreled shotgun just for the occasion.
Remember the Kennedy-Nixon debate? Those who listened by radio voted Nixon the winner. Those who viewed it on TV voted Kennedy as the winner.
This campaign is the logical extension of that, but there are two major differences today:
1) Kennedy was fairly conservative.
2) Many more Americans today judge people by appearance, not substance, then even when Nixon and Kennedy were running.
This is going to be the American Idol election. As such, even without the opposition of the MSM, McCain is in serious trouble. Given the fact that the MSM (which is full of libs dripping with "white guilt") has jettisoned Broom Hitler in favor of Obama, it is going to be even worse.
What is more, many of the members of the DumbMasses are going to swallow the MSM's portrayal of Obama hook, line and sinker.

May 7, 2008 - 21:47 ET by R D HelmWhat I saw truly concerned me. He frequently got confused and lost his place.
He pulls that nonsense against Obama (or even Hillary) and he's finished.
And quite honestly, after 50+ years of government education, I no-longer trust that the American people are able to see through much of anything anymore.
What the American people are looking for is somebody who can solve their problems. - Barack Obama, April 27, 2008
agreed RD
May 7, 2008 - 21:34 ET by candanceFar too many Americans care about looks instead of substance and with gas/groceries being so expensive they'll run to a Democrat to fix it - exactly how they did in 1976.
Then you have to consider that the current GOP is taking a beating for out of control spending. McCain won't be able to paint Obama as a tax-and-spend liberal quite so effectively.
Third, consider how McCain is even older than Reagan and is known for having a violent temper. He makes Bob Dole look like a pretty cool guy.
You get a smooth talking young black guy talking about change, on the same stage as a grumpy old white man who admits he doesn't understand the economy, in the midst of trying times and huge national debt...the details really won't matter by then.
