For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Tax rebates start next week:
The Treasury Department said it hopes to get the first $50 billion out by the end of May. People who use direct deposit will get their payments soonest. By the end of next week, checks will have been deposited into the bank accounts of 7.4 million people. Most people will get their payments by July 11.
Are you expecting to receive any money back? What are you going to do with it? Do you think this is going to help the economy at all? In the end, was this a good idea, or, forgive the pun, a waste of money?

When asking if an idea is "good"
April 26, 2008 - 10:08 ET by sarcasmoTry asking yourself "would this have ever happened in a non-election year" and see what you answer. This is just more fiscal insanity, and sane people worldwide know it.

I'm a teacher, making about
April 26, 2008 - 10:12 ET by umpeteI'm a teacher, making about $60K, but my wife does pretty well...at tax time, the $34K we paid throughout the year wasn't enough for these greedy SOB's so we had to write the IRS a $7K check, upping our 2007 taxes to $41,000....meaning we paid 23 pct just in federal taxes....i live in maryland, so I won't scare you with my new tax obligations at home....but considering all the taxes we paid, wouldn't you say my family of four qualifies as legit tax payers??? no...we made too much to even get a rebate check....
Well, umpete, they had to
April 26, 2008 - 10:23 ET by motherbeltWell, umpete, they had to give people who don't pay any taxes a "rebate" of the taxes they didn't pay....so they used yours to do it.
Neat how that works, huh?

Those Greedy Bastards in Annapolis
April 26, 2008 - 11:00 ET by third eyei live in maryland, so I won't scare you with my new tax obligations at home.
Say no more my friend. I owed the state of Maryland over 30 times what I paid in federal taxes this year.
Gonna blow it
April 26, 2008 - 10:12 ET by JoelCTI was going to pay some bills with mine, but the President says I have to go out and blow it, like it is one of those debit cards handed out in Louisiana. Maybe I'll buy some of those hippy-hoppy albums so I can understand just how cool Obama is. Hillary says I can't give it to the evil oil companies, so I won't spend it on gas.
Actually, knowing me, I'll probably spend it on my kids.

April 26, 2008 - 10:35 ET by ricklailSpend it on my kids
How about the grandkids? With 7 and another due any day now, my wife is already making plays on how to spend it on them.

April 26, 2008 - 10:44 ET by JoelCTI waited until I was older to have my kids, so mine are only college-age, and aren't giving me grandkids yet. As much as I spoil mine, I shudder to think of how much my grandkids will be spoiled by me.
My kids will probably hate to bring them over to see grandpa. :-)
Rich Galen at townhall.com
April 26, 2008 - 10:19 ET by motherbeltRich Galen at townhall.com has an idea why Obama can't close the deal. (Don't let the column title about Dubai fool you..it's in there):
The new most-overused-phrase among the Popular Press is: "Can't Close The Deal." Obama, that is.
Why? Because this is a country at war. It is a country sliding into a recession. It is a country where food and fuel inflation is beginning to affect everyone. And it is a country where people are saddled with home mortgages, student loans, car loans, and maxed out credit cards which means most of us are not more than one large financial hit - a new roof, for instance - of being completely underwater in are [sic] ability to pay our debts.
"Change" my butt. People are not going to turn the keys to the kingdom over to a guy who has three years experience as a US Senator and has spent two of them running for President.
Ain't. Gonna. Happen.
Bitter Sweet Day in NC
April 26, 2008 - 10:28 ET by ricklailIt is kind of a bitter sweet day around here today. Tyler Hansbrough has decided to return for his senior year with the Heels. He is the first player of the year to return since Shaq did it in ’91. Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington have decided to test the NBA waters. They haven’t hired agents leaving open the possibility they will return.
Then there is utter sadness. Rameses XVII, the Heels mascot, has died at the age of 8. The “official” story is that he was head butting his son, XVIII, when his horn broke. He developed an infection and died Thursday. I really believe he died of a broken heart. He has had to suffer through so many crummy football seasons. He was probably watching the current Heels spring practice when his heart failed-he had seen enough. What the Heels football team has put him through over the last-oh I don’t know how many years-is animal cruelty.

For me...
April 26, 2008 - 10:39 ET by heldmywThe housing market revaluation has brought home ownership within my grasp. Every dime I can hoard is going to go toward a down payment.
I guess that removing one home from the vast sea of available properties, paying property taxes and spending on home improvements and the like will have a lasting effect on the economy, even if it is stupendously fractional.
I'm only one person, after all. But I'll put my rebate to good use.
Un-American
April 26, 2008 - 10:52 ET by JoelCTI have to question your patriotism. You are going to give the money that Speaker Pelosi so generously "gave" to you (out of her own pocket at that) to the "predatory" home lenders? Don't you know they and the evil oil companies caused all of this?
</sarc off>
Amazing, that, even though Congress has been completely controlled by the Democrats for 15 months, this "bad economy" is still President Bush's fault.
MSN has cleared it all up for me
April 26, 2008 - 12:15 ET by GBASilly me, I keep thinking of the money that is forcibly extracted from each paycheck as "my money". According to MSN, I'm supposed to think of this as a "gift from Uncle Sam."
Whether you plan to save it -- a good idea given the economic downturn -- invest it, spend it to cover rising food and fuel costs, or take advantage of retailers' special rebate offers, consider it a gift from Uncle Sam. http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Taxes/Advice/SeeWhenYouWillGetATaxRebateCheck.aspx
In that one small section, they managed to slam the economy and extoll the "big government" that took my money away from me in the first place.
This reminds me a lot of the "gifts" I get from class action trial lawyers, where I get a coupon that requires me to spend more money with a company that supposedly did me some grievous harm, and the price of the items (which are usually things I bought voluntarily from a company I like and intend to do business with in the future) is going up to pay for the exorbitant attorney's fees that are included in the settlement.
Liberals are always generous to themselves with other people's money.
tax rebate
April 26, 2008 - 10:51 ET by candanceI'd like everyone on NB who makes more than 75K to give me their address so I can send thank you notes for giving us 1200 dollars. Twas very kind of you to [cough-cough] volunteer your income for such a worthy cause.
If Congress really wanted that money to stay in the private economy they would just repeal taxes and let it stay in our paychecks in the first place. This song and dance about collecting it to pass it back out is ridiculous. The Dems simply want to get everyone dependent on yearly checks from the government so the people will start demanding more taxes on the wealthy to pay for it.
As for us, we're spending the entire amount on some debts we can get paid off. Maybe our creditors can then go spend the extra cash themselves. Either way, it's not my job to blow it on junk to save the economy.
Ted Turner, again
April 26, 2008 - 11:02 ET by motherbeltNow Ted says that food riots are going to become more commonplace.
He's not alone, right? Well, his reasoning definitely puts him a class by himself. Why?
According to Ted, biofuels are not the problem, they are the solution!!
Says Ted (emphasis added):
“There are a lot of different problems being caused by an ever-increasing number of people in a finite-sized world,” Turner said. “The resources of the planet just can’t keep up with the demand and I’m afraid this going to be more commonplace. I’m afraid we’re just seeing the tip of the iceberg.
and
“liquid fuels made from plants and trees, including biodiesel for trucks and generators and ethanol for cars and cooking – could do more than fight problems like pollution and global warming.”
So what we need is more biofuels, not less!!
mother--
April 26, 2008 - 12:21 ET by misterbillTed finally said I agree with. Of course, if there are more food shortages, there will be rioting. Wouldn't you fight to feed your children and grandchildren?? Other than that--he needs to have his tailor make him padded jackets with sleeves that bind in the back.
misterbill...my disagreement
April 26, 2008 - 12:49 ET by motherbeltmisterbill...my disagreement with Turner is in his thesis that the food shortages are caused by overpopulation, not by the use of food for biofuels. Did the populations of Haiti and those other countries suddenly double in the past year to cause these shortages? Or is it the increased use of farmland and food for biofuels the problem?

I know they do pay farmers not to farm. I know it has to do with keeping prices up etc, but I don't know enough about that system to mount an argument for or against it. ( I don't argue when I don't know what I'm talking about...well at least when I'm aware that I don't know...LOL)
mb
April 26, 2008 - 13:24 ET by botgi'd agree end ethanol subsides it pollutes too much and is inefficient, just saying there are other reasons that food shortages exist thus the blame can not be fully placed on food-4-fuel

Drill for Oil--DUH!
April 26, 2008 - 11:44 ET by iveseenitallOil has been a problem, but also the answer to many problems, since before WWII. Wild-eyed speculation regarding its effects on the environment, now and in the future, are a result of thousands of lies by individuals who know that "the masses are asses". Drill and refine. Jumping into "alternative" energy with no guarantees that it will lessen our dependence on oil is foolish. Drill and refine; put the environmental charlatans out of business and the future will be secure. Not to do so is dangerous and foolish. When it's a choice between your kids and a rare turtle, which will you choose? Your tax "rebates" are just being sucked up at the pump and at blown away at the food store. Wake up, America!

My rebate is going into the bank
April 26, 2008 - 11:51 ET by shawn228I would love to buy a Blu Ray Player, but I wiped out my savings on new car and big screen tv last year.
Layoffs are also abundent at my wifes company and things not stable at my job either. I also think gas at 117.00 a barrel and the housing crises is going to have a huge ripple effect on the economy.
My plans----
April 26, 2008 - 12:17 ET by misterbillMy son and daughter-in-law live with me. They have a gorgeous child, my sweetheart. They are both in school and my wife and I carry the brunt of economic support. My wife still works, (God bless her), and I collect SS and a small corporate retirement.
We are going to blow the refund on food and clothing. We are going to live it up and buy an extra hand of bananas for the baby.
Folks, I am being sarcastic. We are not that bad off, but it ain't easy. I believe my retirement and my wife's salary puts us about $10 grand above the median. Our gasoline bill for the kids to go to schools etc. exceeds $300 a month. Daycare, (parttime) is another $500 a month. $300 here, $500 there and very quickly zap--it's gone.
My son just landed a parttime job--thats is a help. My daughter in law gets her certificate at the end of May. Happy days are on the way. That is until the Dems do away with GWs tax rate and increases my taxes an additional $2800 or so a year on the same amount we make now.
Taxes...Whether Democrat or a Republican you will find these statistics enlightening and amazing.

Violence in Chicago
April 26, 2008 - 14:32 ET by ricklailI was reading an article about the violence in Chicago last weekend and the plans to stop it this weekend. As usual the liberal mayor blames the gun industry. I have a simple solution. If you are seen on the street carrying a gun, you would be fair game and shot on sight. If I found that you were trying to conceal a weapon you would be disarmed and shot. If the problem is gangs, then lock them up. If the city had a pack of wild dogs running loose then they would stop them. To me gangs are like wild dogs. There would be no mercy.
