For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: WSJ advocating the stockpiling of food?
Food prices are already rising here much faster than the returns you are likely to get from keeping your money in a bank or money-market fund. And there are very good reasons to believe prices on the shelves are about to start rising a lot faster...Stocking up on food may not replace your long-term investments, but it may make a sensible home for some of your shorter-term cash. Do the math.
Does this make sense? If people really do this, want it compound the problem? Is the Journal being responsible advocating this? Doesn't this add to the bubblish look of this grains price rise?

April 25, 2008 - 10:10 ET by dscottSarc, you are correct, this will magnify the effect of the ethanol stupidity showing the falllacy of AGW in a Reductio ad absurdum fashion. The problem is while we in the US may have the financial resources to pay more, the world's poor do not. This is truly irresponsible, millions could potentially starve in the third world by needlessly driving up the price further. Congress must come to their senses quickly by repealing the Ethanol mandates and subsidies. I have to change my tag line, this is the new issue dejour.

Enough of McCain
April 25, 2008 - 09:58 ET by ricklailI have had my fill of McCain. I really don't know what to do in November. Yesterday's little trip to NO did it for me. He trashed Bush when the problem was not his fault. Then he trashes the NC GOP over the O'bama ad. The O'bama ad is tame compared to what is going to be thrown at him from the likes of MoveOn.org and the Soro machine. Enough of him.

Katrina effect because of Pres was a media lie
April 25, 2008 - 10:31 ET by ChrisMillsSorry, MC, but the slow response to Katrina was the fault of none other than two dems. The mayor of NO Nagin (D) had busses lined up to take people out of the city and he refused saying (and I paraphrase) "My people are tough. We can take it." Unnecessary deaths were his fault. The governor of Louisiana at the time, Blanco (D) refused National Guard intervention that Bush offered right away and delayed saying in effect, "I won't let the federal gov't take over my state." Unecessary damage and slow down to the city is her fault.
I'm surprised this NewsBusters forum has the defense of a liberal media hit job that was the biggest reason for the pres's low approval numbers. McCain should stop pandering to media lies and start thinking on his own. We should all be very dissappointed in him.
To be sure, Nagin and Blanco deserve a lot of blame.
April 25, 2008 - 10:38 ET by Missouri ConservativeBut Bush embraced a New Deal-style federal program to rebuild New Orleans with hundres of billions of federal tax dollars. He should have just provided emergency relief, then cut all the red-tape and regulations, and let the people, through their local governments rebuild the place. You have to go through several different federal agencices just to tear down an old building. It's no wonder it's taking so long.
Anyway, did Bush get a raw deal? Yes. Did the media completely ignore the responsibility Blanco and Nagin had? Absolutely. But there is some blame to be placed at the doorstep of W.

April 25, 2008 - 10:50 ET by ChrisMillsGood point about the New Deal re-building. That was a bad move. The media hit job was wrong and Bush responded to it by giving in to their demands. That was wrong. It didn't stop the MSM's hit job and it slowed down long-term recovery. The short-term rescue effort that McCain just trashed the administration for is still unjustified no matter how we slice the overall efforts. McCain should stop apologizing to Obama for justified criticism against him and start apologizing to Bush for his own unjustified criticism.

April 25, 2008 - 10:43 ET by Hunter12MC, The story of the Katrina disaster will be laid at the feet of 50 plus years of levee districts' mismanagement and a stupid mayor and governor when it is written. President Bush would have been in violation of State's Rights had he acted in any manner prior to being asked by Blanco. The way aid was passed out could be blamed on FEMA, but any action to screen for people in actual need would have been construed as racist by the press. They actually tried to say blacks were left behind, when the statistics of the rescues made showed this to be untrue.
Two things stand out from this disaster.
One, people raised in a culture of "Everything is owed to me" don't know how to pick themselves up and rebuild. Compare NO to the Mississippi parishes. Look at NO herself. Where neighborhoods have returned, they were generally seeded around one or two individuals who returned as soon as it was possible and rebuilt on their own.
Two, maybe it isn't a good idea to live in a place below sea-, river-, and lake-level in an area prone to storms that produce tidal surges and large amounts of rain.

It's clear that his criticism of Bush is the NOT the liberal left-wing Democrat angle. He criticized the incompetent federal and state bureaucracies. He also laid blame at the feet of state and local governments too, referencing the school buses.
You are dead right in that the welfare state of New Orleans contributed a great deal, but the disaster was exacerbated by a big-government Soviet-style rebuilding effort.
Y'all need to be prepared for McCain to run against Bush in this election to some degree. This is one instance, at least in my mind, where Bush was not at his best.

I agree that the situation
April 25, 2008 - 11:28 ET by Hunter12I agree that the situation could have been handled better. Maybe the first people caught ripping off the aid efforts could have been executed on national television and an amnesty period established for others to turn themsleves in. Maybe a trail following all the money allocated for levee improvements for the last 75 years could have been created and which Democrat on which board lined their pockets the most could have been revealed. Maybe an IQ test for Nagin and Blanco could have been administered, their incompetence disclosed, and a recall been effected prior to their stupid decisions costing the lives lost in the flooding. My point is that blaming President Bush for a slow initial response is ludicrous and that is what the MSM was laying at his doorstep. About all he could have done differently was mass the National Guard at the Tennessee border and wait for the storm track to play out. "President Wastes Millions on Un-needed Troop Activation!" would have been the headlines when an undetected warm current in the gulf deflected Katrina to Texas or Mexico.
McCain will be smart to run against Bush as well as Obama or Clinton, because the media has created a monster by selective reporting and outright distortions and the general public has swallowed the whole line. Bush is not without blame for the situation we find ourselves in. It will be interesting to see how history paints the picture of his presidency.
Just think, the media has painted a guy ripping off the gullible to the tune of billions and trying to force an austere lifestyle on all of us to sustain his own as the savior of all and "Oh, what might have been."

While I think some of this sentament is true regardless of where you are, this is no more true here in N.O. then any where else. The media has bombarded the country into believeing that we are a helpless lot with no capabillities of our own. They did it to justify their ridicule of Bush. Many of us are absolutly livid with this message, and I for one have always gone out of my way to let the folks know how much we appreciate their help. April 25, 2008 - 13:32 ET by Hunter12In the city itself, the instances where the people didn't sit on their hands and wait for the relief effort to come to them and served as the catalyst to reviatlize their neighborhoods were the most inspiring. Some of these people served as the phoenix in the rebirth of communities. There was a case of one mother who said she had to do it herself to hold her family together. Those people who you saw sitting in hotels and trailers waiting to see how much the government was going to give them had the opposite effect on me. I realize this in a generalization and some people had to wait for the money to afford to rebuild, but not all did. Some seemed to epitomize that welfare paradigm which serves as a trap for themselves and their children. I agree that some of these people were put on display to try and embarass the administration. I also believe that some of the superstars that came through complaining and didn't return, were just pushing a liberal political agenda. People like Pitt and Connick, who have complained about conditions but put their money and efforts where their mouth are, should be commended. I hate to see them raving about Bill Clinton and his photo-op appearances though.

The problem was the medias spin on the situation. I have stated time and again about how you never hear this from our hard hit neighbores because they had leadership, we had political pawns. As far as the folks who were living in trailers, not sure where you exspected them to go, many had thier homes destroyed or severly contaminated.

April 25, 2008 - 10:18 ET by GothampcI agree. McCain should keep his mouth shut. This is a foreshadowing of what he's going to be like as POTUS. Running his mouth when he doesn't need to say anything. I too don't know what I'm going to do come November. I'm not voting Dem and I don't want a RINO.
As far as NO is concerned, it is a failure of the Democratic Party running the government. There is a thing called "states rights". The federal government just can't come rushing in and start bossing the local and state government around. Blanco and Nagin were unprepared. If they knew there was a potential levee problem, why wasn't it addressed years before the emergency. Is Bush supposed to come up with an evacuation plan for every city across the US? No, that is not Bush's responsibility. Bush isn't blameless in the incident, but he certainly wasn't the main player in the problem.

STIMULUS CHECK: THE UGLY SIDE
April 26, 2008 - 09:54 ET by reelman46STIMULUS CHECK: THE UGLY SIDE
What
if your best buddy had his house burn halfway down? What if you wanted
to help? What if you bought him a plasma TV? What if you paid for the
TV with his VISA? That is exactly what the congressional royalty did
with the so-called stimulus check. Did the congress cut their wild
spending (vote-buying) by $150 billion to send you a little boost? No.
Did the congress reform the tax system to really help you long-range?
No. Did the congress reform the way they spend recklessly with annual
4-12% increases in most everything? Did congress reform the broke
Social Security system they looted for decades to buy votes? No. Did
the congress offer to suspend the federal gas tax for the rest of 2008
and balance that with cuts in waste? No. Did the congress pledge never
again to spend tens of billions in pork to buy votes? No. Did the
congress show any leadership or vision? No.
So what did they do? Your congress saw a chance to be your Sugar Daddy
hero and buy some poll points (maybe some votes too) with a small check
that will be gone before the next weekend. Turn around and take a look.
Your house is still halfway burnt down. Your VISA took the hit. Will we
ever stop being suckers? Will we ever rage against a serially
malevolent congress and its financial scams? Government is the problem.
Its our money.

Our Democrat governor has managed to trash a fairly robust economy in 5 years by trying to hide his tax increases on businesses as fees and such. He's driven the trucking industry to Indiana and Iowa and killed several other ventures with licensing costs and such. He wanted a gross receipts tax to finance a new health care plan when the plan already in place is not honored anywhere because the state doesn't pay their bills. He should soon be sharing a cell with our last governor (for sake of disclosure, a Republican) when the Tony Rezko trial ends and Tony turns government witness to get a lighter sentence.

April 25, 2008 - 12:07 ET by ThisnThatObama addressed the nation today regarding the "gas price" crisis. NOT ONE WORD ABOUT additional drilling in the U.S.; nor getting our nuclear energy industry moving again.
Also, today -- as usual, I saw many teanagers driving the 0.65 miles to school today in their private cars; several were smoking cigarettes. At least once they had to stop while a school bus was picking up its few passengers -- going to the same school! What's wrong with that picture? And based upon this observation of real-world activity, why should I ever listen to all the moaning and groaning over increased gas prices from people who take NO RESPONSIBILITY for their own actions?

April 24, 2008 - 13:15 ET by Roger the Shrubber
Do you simply cut-and-paste your daily excusings of the murder of innocents, or do you re-type them everyday?
I just post links like you do, schmucktard
Must be a heavy load, having to make up excuses for a religion that butchers thousands. I guess it takes a "bigot" like me to expose what an impotent, flaccid little justifier of death you are, douchemonger.
I don't excuse terrorists, you just keep calling them Muslims, and I just keep pointing that out - try to get a clue someday bud
Oh, here's some guidelines for you to follow, for the next time you visit your gynecologist in Belgium. You should get checked out, you know.
(nod and wave:) - you betcha rog!
While you stew over whatever lame, ineffectual comeback you are contemplating, chew on these two stories about tolerance and moderation.

April 24, 2008 - 14:47 ET by Cortillaen
Hello, TM, you seem to have forgotten about our little game. The score was 5-0 in my favor, as I recall, right after I finished dismantling your four examples of "peaceful" Muslims.
FYI a game called "Golf" is the only game you can score yourself
To recap, one was a liar catering to both sides, though his blog seems rather one-sided in favor of extremism, and the other three were all active advocates of extremism, including the highest authority in the Sunni sect. I was eagerly awaiting your next try, too. Also, I think it is rather telling that, in addition to the numerous examples of murderous, extremist Muslims, none your supposedly-contradictory examples truly do so, and 75% of them actually endorse extremism. Fun, huh? Oh, and don't forget this poll, the one which still says over half of Muslims think mocking their prophet is justification for death. So much for your unfounded "those so-called 'Muslims' in your links only account for maybe 1% of Islam at best". I don't need to call you names. Taking your arguments apart with the truth is much more satisfying.

dude, you have certainly learned to love yourself - and as they say - it's the greatest love of all:)
can't seem to find this BS you're spouting above online - so if you care to start a woodshed thread I'll be glad to clear up all of your sad confusion - and only 50% of Muslims believe blasphemy is punishable by death?! We Christians are still pretty solid at 100%...
TM, Your problem isn't that
April 24, 2008 - 16:55 ET by Hunter12
TM, Your problem isn't that the "so-called "Muslims" in your links only account for maybe 1% of Islam" are terrorists, it's that 99% of terrorists are Muslims.
http://www.fbi.gov/publications/terror/terror2000_2001.htm#page_15
Until the 99% that are pacifists in your view put a stop to that 1%, they will have to share in the bad name.
http://www.fbi.gov/publications/terror/terror2000_2001.htm#page_15
I do question how a practicing Muslim can ignore those parts of the Koran that tell them to spread the word by sword if necessary.
My daily answer - they are not PRACTICING Muslims:)
On something that is unreleated: a matryed man gets 72 virgins in paradise. What does a female matyr receive? I am being sincere in asking this question and am not mocking the Islamic faith.
not sure, sorry

Regarding the 72 virgins
April 24, 2008 - 18:31 ET by Cortillaen
Regarding the 72 virgins thing, I proposed what seems to be the most reasonable explanation here. Like you, I don't mean to mock Islam, but when my reasoning suggests bribery via promised sex, I'm not entirely sure how to avoid it. Well, wouldn't be the first time I've "blasphemed" and surely won't be the last (note that I distinguish between blasphemy, the arrogant, ignorant mockery of a religion's deity/prophets/tenets and "blasphemy", discussing aspects of a religion its defenders don't want discussed). Given the manner in which the religion was created and the primary targets at such time, I think my proposal is quite reasonable. Never mind the accounts of Muhammad declaring women to be mentally deficient because their testimony is half as accurate as that of a man because they are mentally deficient. No, I'm not kidding. Oh, and he said the majority of those in hell were women. For some reason, it sounds like Muhammad didn't care overmuch for women, huh?

..as long as you guys are into the religous bigotry thing - you really ought to hammer away at the Catholic ped priests or cheap Jews - obsessing about that is much more accurate than the so-called "Muslim terrorism" thing which doesn't even represent more than just a small fringe of the relgion - whereas pretty much all Jews really are cheap, and a ton of Priests do the ped thing...
Just a handy tip for now...

Whoops. I answered my own question. We're not dealing with a mental giant here, folks. Sorry about that.
I find it hard to ban anybody who never seems to feel that "please kick my ass" sign taped to his backside. Of course, Tumbles, er, Truthie was already banned before, right?

Food on hand in case of crisis
April 25, 2008 - 16:34 ET by justmeOne of the things that has occured to me lately is that, though I do not live in an area likely to suffer a disaster, I ought to have food on hand in case of a crisis. This past two weeks, as an experiment, apart from bread and milk I have purchased no groceries. We had enough and to spare for probably two more weeks yet. (Only now I find myself having to go out and stock up again. So, I guess I'll be adding to the "shortage" here.) How many of you have food on hand for emergencies and how long would it last? I'm thinking I'd like to have more reserves on hand than I do, but I don't want to go overboard either.
Along with emergency
April 25, 2008 - 19:50 ET by dscottAlong with emergency supplies you should have a camp stove so you can cook that food (outside), in a natural disaster don't count on water, electricity or natural gas being available. People who are best prepared are those have camping experience, living in your home with no running water, no electricity and no natural gas is like camping in a palace, attitude is everything, experience makes the difference.

House holds sex ed hearing
Gravatar Written by Kiley Humphries, April 25, 2008
The federal government has spent about $1.3 billion on abstinence
education programs since 1996. A House of Representatives hearing
yesterday suggested it has been money wasted.
The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform called the
hearing to assess the facts concerning the federal Title V, Section 510
Abstinence Education Program, an 11-year effort to provide funding to
states for abstinence-only sexual education classes. These programs
must exclusively teach that abstinence is the best protection from STDs
and pregnancy and that “a mutually faithful monogamous relationship in
context of marriage is the expected standard of human sexual activity.”
On the other end of the spectrum, comprehensive sex ed programs inform
teens how they can protect themselves should they decide to engage in
sexual activity.
CRAWFISH NOTE: Know any other federal spending as
small as this that gets the microscope to justify itself? Try none. The
modern liberal is a secular socialist. Morals do not matter, character
does not count… its all secular all the time. Any moral boundaries are
to be ridiculed, undermined, distorted and destroyed. In a country
where 76% of black families are fornication-based, where the woman
accepts being used without any legal or religious contract and 28% of
non-blacks are doing the same we all see the lasting nitemare effects
on the culture in everything from school behavior to drug use.. yet
liberals (democrats) do not want a smidgen of common sense solutions
that may have moral overtones. Hideous, mean, sick and evil are the
words best to describe that attitude towards the marriage bond.
The #1 cultural problem and the national democrats think showing
pre-teens how to put condoms on cucumbers is superior to respecting
women and marriage. These people are sickos that must be defeated every
election. Our nation’s very foundation (the family) is at stake.
Destroy the family, destroy the nation. Any nation.

April 26, 2008 - 09:57 ET by sarcasmoThat Al's a wily one. I guess I should not be surprised that nobody here has commented on his take on the not guilty verdict involving abortion, but it has several humorously uncomfortable angles for both sides.
