For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: increasing the beer tax?

The San Jose Democrat on Thursday proposed raising the beer tax by $1.80 per six-pack, or 30 cents per can or bottle. The current tax is 2 cents per can. That's an increase of about 1,500 percent. Beall said the tax would generate $2 billion a year to fund health care services, crime prevention and programs to prevent underage drinking and addiction.

Sure, this is just a California proposal. However, goofy ideas that get enacted in the Golden State have a tendency to sweep the country. As such, what say you NewsBusters?

Not surprised, but am surprised

that it is on beer - oh, wait, can't put it on wine, it makes "money" for the state. So then, one needs to ask - why aren't the "rich" being taxed? Isn't beer a commn folk libation?

There is no sense in being stupid, if you can't prove it! - my dad V

First it was tobacco. Next

First it was tobacco. Next is trans fats and they are starting on beer now. I hope more than anything one of of these new 'causes' affect and take away from those very people who cheered the previous causes. They deserve it.

I didn't speak up on tobacco. I will not speak up on beer. I will laugh as those beer drinking do-gooders cry about how their rights are being infringed upon.

Be careful what you ask for. If we are going to clean the slate of things that are bad for you let's clean the whole slate and not be selective on the items you don't agree with.

Its looks like San Jose

Its looks like San Jose didn't pay attention to what happened in Chicago with their bottled water tax.

Warning to San Jose: People will go out of their way to avoid a tax if they can. And the people you're hurting are the beer sellers in your city who will experience decreased sales.

I travel approximately 30 miles round trip to go to the Indian reservation in NY to buy cartons of cigarettes and fill up the car with gas while I'm there. There's NO WAY I'm paying the cigarette taxes in NY. Elliott Spitzer threatened many times to find a way to tax non-Indians who go to the reservations. Hmmm, I wonder how that worked out for him?

I'm pretty sure that the

I'm pretty sure that the prostitute Eliot visited was a non-indian, and that the the financial transaction was not subject to sales tax. At least that part of the deal went OK for the gov. The rest went only so-so.

YO People

The San Jose Dimocrat is proposing the tax on all beer sales in California. Not just the city of San Jose!

→ What was that Obama?

"And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations," Obama said.

Wow Bambi, for a moment there I thought you were talking about your little inner city pity party.

This is the money quote!

I read this article, on Drudge, and to me the money quote is:

""The people who use alcohol should pay for part of the cost to society, just like we've accepted that concept with tobacco," Beall said."

Just like we've "accepted" that concept with tobacco?  Some of us have never "accepted" that concept and realize it's just another way for the government to scam people out of tax money.  Let's save the children.  Let's get money for all those health care expenses the smokers are forcing us to pay. They actually get away with stuff because the media has allowed their statements to be accepted as fact.

I also noticed, further down, that a critic of the legislator wouldn't pin him down as a kook, he had to say his heart was in the right place, etc.

The problem with California is they've become a bunch of sheep out there.  The liberals tell them to ban smoking in a town and the sheep don't think beyond that to what are they going to ban next.  Non-smokers had better get wise because, once smoking is a thing of the past, the nazis are going after something else, until they mold our society into the one they want to live in.

Democrats: Stuck on Stupid since 2000.

pbt, you're not smokin' the "right stuff"

My first thought was that San Jose should be taxing "medical marijuana", but then I realized that someone would probably say, "can't tax that because it's 'medicine'".

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul.

Compared to spending like hell on enforcement/incarceration

Taxing it might actually make sense. Good thing drug law enforcement is so consistent.

If society needs to pay for it's ills collectively, then there should be a tax on illegals also.

False premises

Right on. pbthinker. Using a false premise as though it is a "widely accepted" view is a tactic of the left. Global Warming is the best example of this. Anyone who disagrees with it is attacked as out of the "maintstream" (as defined by the "liberals"). But searching for the truth is not what "liberals" are about. Indocrtination to their world view is.

California

How long before there is a taxpayers' revolt in the Golden State?

"women and minorities hardest hit"

How Long?

It's going to be a really long time.  There's no Republican leadership, in the state, and the Democrats all believe this crap.  If they keep it up, they'll drive most of the businesses out of the state, along with the business owners and the good workers, then the liberals can have what they want, a California that looks like Baja California.

Democrats: Stuck on Stupid since 2000.

So what you're saying

it will be returned to Mexico? If not for the great military bases, all over CA, I wouldn't have a problem with that?

Would they like a little cheese with that wine

They need to have there own version of the Boston Tea Party. Just remember to use the rocky mountain wantabe green beer.

During this time with political correctness at its zenith, I reserve the right to let you know you're an idiot.

California Dems are infamous

California Dems are infamous for proposing (and enacting) "special taxes" on "luxury" items, especially politically incorrect ones. I wouldn't be surprised to see a proposed "furniture tax" to fund head injury research and treatment programs because a "study" has shown people fall and hit their heads on coffee tables.

Coffee table problem

Once the beer tax is in place, the coffee table problem should correct itself also.

If conservatives are RIGHT, then liberals must be WRONG.

It's Official AP has Dumped the Clintons

The AP has done  a complete 180 this is just a YAHOO story but still it break down "The Spin" and "The Facts"

I was shocked

I was a professional twice over - an analyst and a therapist. The world's first analrapist

Boy oh boy...

Are the gloves off at AP!!! I have to admit that I love the fact that some in the MSM are FINALLY holding Billary's feet to the fire. Too bad this newfound journalistic honesty hasn't and most likely won't extend to its coverage of Barack Obama.

   The newfound

The newfound journalistic honesty is BECAUSE of Barack H-word Obama.  To protect himm and to get him into office

I was a professional twice over - an analyst and a therapist. The world's first analrapist

You are more than likely right...

about that. Although, this latest comment by Obama is getting a lot of play by all the MSM. Even they can't bail him out of this one.

Don't bet the farm on that.

I wouldn't bet the farm, on the media not helping Obama out.  This story has taken hold at the wrong time, just before the weekend, so the Obamaites (or the MSM, whichever you prefer) don't have the big guns doing the cover-up.  Come Monday, the producers for the MSM news will have plenty of bitter, rural Pennsylvania types on the TV screen praising Obama and crying for gun control, at the same time.  They'll be out there telling NBC how they were converted to Obama's new religion by their news and Pastor Wright.  You'll be amazed at the difference between this weekend and next week.

Democrats: Stuck on Stupid since 2000.

I'm sure that the MSM...

will continue their efforts to help Obama out of whatever trouble he gets himself into. But, given the fact that there is FoxNews, as well as the other conservative media outlets and the internet bloggers, the Obamamaniacs will still have a more difficult time controlling what spin is put out about him. As far as this story breaking right before the weekend, don't forget the Sunday morning news programs...I'm sure Obama will have plenty of his talking heads out there, spinning like crazy telling us all "...what he really meant..." I think that this comment by Obama is so striking and revealing as to what he really thinks, that there is no way that this story is going away...It has legs, and we will be hearing it again and again. Hopefully, people will be listening.

Wow, so the Boy President

Wow, so the Boy President mis-stated his wife's mis-statement of her Bosnia trip.

How 'bout that!

Was Mr. Former President (I just love saying that!) exhausted too?

He had to be either drunk or stupid to say that well she's almost 60, and when you're sixty you'll forget things too. What a sterling recommendation for a Presidential hopeful. Obama and his campaign must have been ecstatic at that!

You can't find better

You can't find better comedy ANYWHERE on TV or the movies.

..and a global warming tax for Los Angeles

Meanwhile Democratic Assemblyman Mike Feuer of Los Angeles has proposed a global warming tax for Los Angeles County.

I propose a new tax for CA - everytime a Democrat utters the words "tax" or "fee," they be taxed $10,000.

This is how the tax racket

This is how the tax racket works: You enact some sort of "sin tax", and promise to use it to cure some imaginary problem:  "for the children", "for the poor", or, better yet, "for the poor children". When people avoid the tax, you complain that the program isn't getting enough money, and raise the tax. It has worked for the govt schools for a long time now.

robert

you forgot to complete the cycle:

divert the money to building a union represented bureaucracy to increase your voter base while keeping the imaginary problem underfunded insuring future taxes.

--repeat as needed--

“The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.”   -Chief Justice John Roberts

The corollary is that there

The corollary is that there is no "level of funding" that will solve the problem, thus giving the tax(and the program) eternal life. Whenever a leftie program doesn't work, they want to spend more money on it.

When we don't win the war on terrorism in a certain time, the remedy is to stop fighting the terrorists. Go figure.

naught plus naught is naught

Thanks for trying, bt...

I finally got so disgusted, I quit trying and gave up...I came back on a bit ago, and obviously it now seems to be working okay. You're right-I've never seen it so bad.

Homebrewing

This is another good thing about homebrewing.

I make great, microbrew in any style I want and don't have to pay the beer-tax since all I'm buying is grains, hops and yeast!

Plus it's cheaper than buying bottled beer!

Jimmy Cater did one good thing in his term...signed a bill allowing people to brew beer without taxing them or requiring a license.  If it's under 200 gallons per year.

Of course no one checks to see how much is actually brewed ;)

Home/Microbrewing is

Home/Microbrewing is absolutely the way to go. I used to work at a brewpub in MA that was able to skirt the blue laws that were in place at the time requiring liquor stores to close on Sunday. Because his was technically a brewer's/farmer's license he could sell 64 oz. growlers all day on the sabbath. Very popular in autumn among guys who forgot to stock up ahead of time for the Patriots game.

What kind of stuff do you brew Wilbur? You might find my underused beer discussion forum interesting: http://newsbusters.o...

Come on everyone, you must all have some preferred brews to recommend!

Who can revolt if man has become a simple conglomerate of organs, a person barely free enough to use a remote control to choose his channel? -J. Kristeva

Thanks for the link JaC...

I'll see you there.

I prefer various styles of IPAs, especially a mix my local brewmeister made up called San Diego IPA. The hops used are a little less 'bitter' than a standard IPA.

I love porters too, but not on hot Arizona days. They're too heavy, but to dispell a popular notion...just because a beer is dark doesn't mean it tastes bitter like Guiness.

My wife hated beer till she had a chocolate porter I brewed! I brewed it first for her several years ago and now I'm addicted to it. It has a distinct chocolate smell. Maybe that's why my wife and female neighbors like it!!!

Every June I make my spice Christmas beer. It has ginger root in it so it needs to 'rest' 6 months to attain full spice  flavor.

It's amazing how you can take a simple recipe and change it by adding a pound of crystal malt or some Hallertau (sp) hops.

Right now I brew extract as I don't have the room for full mash brewing, but someday....

Either way I skirt all the beer tax!

I make my own Root Beer (with 100% real cane sugar)

I make orange soda too the same way. No High Fructose Corn Sweetener, No Benzoate, No Brominated Vegetable Oil. Just Soda the way it used to be. :)

WMD's

Has anybody heard anything new on this...or anything about it recently?

Far as I am concerned, always have felt for various reasons from the beginning of letting the world know we were going to go to war with Saddam this is what did happen to the WMD's, let alone a book one of Saddam's close men wrote about helping to transfer them, I think his name was George Sada or Dada...he flew WMD's to Syria, just didn't know where they ended up or what they were exactly (plus the msm with the exception of Fox refused to have him on)...plus the so-calledRussian convoy that was filmed going towards Syria... time will tell eventually, I have read the reason bush has kept from saying anything about this is Russia and the help we need from them regarding Iran via votes in the UN and such.

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Churchill

bt...It's about time the truth about this...

finally came out. I have never forgotten about the reports that we all heard right before the start of the Iraq war, of all the trucks headed from Iraq into Syria. We know they existed. What do people think was in these trucks?? Used tires?? What else would Saddam be in such a hurry to get rid of, and where would have been the most convenient and politically sympathetic country to stash them? Syria. As you said, time will tell. I just hope that the truth does, finally, come out.
