For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: increasing the beer tax?
The San Jose Democrat on Thursday proposed raising the beer tax by $1.80 per six-pack, or 30 cents per can or bottle. The current tax is 2 cents per can. That's an increase of about 1,500 percent. Beall said the tax would generate $2 billion a year to fund health care services, crime prevention and programs to prevent underage drinking and addiction.
Sure, this is just a California proposal. However, goofy ideas that get enacted in the Golden State have a tendency to sweep the country. As such, what say you NewsBusters?

I didn't speak up on tobacco. I will not speak up on beer. I will laugh as those beer drinking do-gooders cry about how their rights are being infringed upon.
Be careful what you ask for. If we are going to clean the slate of things that are bad for you let's clean the whole slate and not be selective on the items you don't agree with.

Its looks like San Jose
April 12, 2008 - 10:23 ET by HypocriteHaterIts looks like San Jose didn't pay attention to what happened in Chicago with their bottled water tax.
Warning to San Jose: People will go out of their way to avoid a tax if they can. And the people you're hurting are the beer sellers in your city who will experience decreased sales.
I travel approximately 30 miles round trip to go to the Indian reservation in NY to buy cartons of cigarettes and fill up the car with gas while I'm there. There's NO WAY I'm paying the cigarette taxes in NY. Elliott Spitzer threatened many times to find a way to tax non-Indians who go to the reservations. Hmmm, I wonder how that worked out for him?

This is the money quote!
April 12, 2008 - 10:35 ET by pbthinkerI read this article, on Drudge, and to me the money quote is:
""The people who use alcohol should pay for part of the cost to society, just like we've accepted that concept with tobacco," Beall said."
Just like we've "accepted" that concept with tobacco? Some of us have never "accepted" that concept and realize it's just another way for the government to scam people out of tax money. Let's save the children. Let's get money for all those health care expenses the smokers are forcing us to pay. They actually get away with stuff because the media has allowed their statements to be accepted as fact.
I also noticed, further down, that a critic of the legislator wouldn't pin him down as a kook, he had to say his heart was in the right place, etc.
The problem with California is they've become a bunch of sheep out there. The liberals tell them to ban smoking in a town and the sheep don't think beyond that to what are they going to ban next. Non-smokers had better get wise because, once smoking is a thing of the past, the nazis are going after something else, until they mold our society into the one they want to live in.

April 12, 2008 - 15:15 ET by pbthinkerI wouldn't bet the farm, on the media not helping Obama out. This story has taken hold at the wrong time, just before the weekend, so the Obamaites (or the MSM, whichever you prefer) don't have the big guns doing the cover-up. Come Monday, the producers for the MSM news will have plenty of bitter, rural Pennsylvania types on the TV screen praising Obama and crying for gun control, at the same time. They'll be out there telling NBC how they were converted to Obama's new religion by their news and Pastor Wright. You'll be amazed at the difference between this weekend and next week.

As far as this story breaking right before the weekend, don't forget the Sunday morning news programs...I'm sure Obama will have plenty of his talking heads out there, spinning like crazy telling us all "...what he really meant..." I think that this comment by Obama is so striking and revealing as to what he really thinks, that there is no way that this story is going away...It has legs, and we will be hearing it again and again. Hopefully, people will be listening.

April 12, 2008 - 15:09 ET by Wilbur747This is another good thing about homebrewing.
I make great, microbrew in any style I want and don't have to pay the beer-tax since all I'm buying is grains, hops and yeast!
Plus it's cheaper than buying bottled beer!
Jimmy Cater did one good thing in his term...signed a bill allowing people to brew beer without taxing them or requiring a license. If it's under 200 gallons per year.
Of course no one checks to see how much is actually brewed ;)

April 12, 2008 - 17:00 ET by JasonCHome/Microbrewing is absolutely the way to go. I used to work at a brewpub in MA that was able to skirt the blue laws that were in place at the time requiring liquor stores to close on Sunday. Because his was technically a brewer's/farmer's license he could sell 64 oz. growlers all day on the sabbath. Very popular in autumn among guys who forgot to stock up ahead of time for the Patriots game.

I prefer various styles of IPAs, especially a mix my local brewmeister made up called San Diego IPA. The hops used are a little less 'bitter' than a standard IPA.
I love porters too, but not on hot Arizona days. They're too heavy, but to dispell a popular notion...just because a beer is dark doesn't mean it tastes bitter like Guiness.
My wife hated beer till she had a chocolate porter I brewed! I brewed it first for her several years ago and now I'm addicted to it. It has a distinct chocolate smell. Maybe that's why my wife and female neighbors like it!!!
Every June I make my spice Christmas beer. It has ginger root in it so it needs to 'rest' 6 months to attain full spice flavor.
It's amazing how you can take a simple recipe and change it by adding a pound of crystal malt or some Hallertau (sp) hops.
Right now I brew extract as I don't have the room for full mash brewing, but someday....
Either way I skirt all the beer tax!

Far as I am concerned, always have felt for various reasons from the beginning of letting the world know we were going to go to war with Saddam this is what did happen to the WMD's, let alone a book one of Saddam's close men wrote about helping to transfer them, I think his name was George Sada or Dada...he flew WMD's to Syria, just didn't know where they ended up or what they were exactly (plus the msm with the exception of Fox refused to have him on)...plus the so-calledRussian convoy that was filmed going towards Syria... time will tell eventually, I have read the reason bush has kept from saying anything about this is Russia and the help we need from them regarding Iran via votes in the UN and such.
