A Biased Report About Bias :o)
April 9, 2008 - 12:39 ET by CGatton"High School Student Raises Questions About Textbook Bias" What a marvelous headline, certainly not one you would expect from the AP. A high school student not only recognizes the bias in textbooks, but is actually given a forum to present his views. Perhaps there still is hope...wait a minute...did I say an AP report? Hmmm, better read this one carefully.
"Talk about a civics lesson: A high-school senior has raised questions about political bias in a popular textbook on U.S. government, and legal scholars and top scientists say the teen's criticism is well-founded."
Wow! What an unexpected lead! Knowing the bias that exists in modern textbooks, it appeared the AP slipped and let an actual story slip through. Alas, that was the end of what might have been an interesting read. Instead, it devolved into another liberal stifling of dissent and debate. From the second line, "They say American Government by conservatives James Wilson and John Dilulio presents a skewed view of topics from global warming to separation of church and state," to the end of the article is an uninterupted negation of any presentation or hint of opposing views. Orthodox (liberal) view is good, opposing (conservative) view is bad. So what exactly are these 'skewed' views?
"...science doesn't know whether we are experiencing a dangerous level of global warming or how bad the greenhouse effect is, if it exists at all." It's clear what the problem is here. The Goracle has not been accepted, quoted, and honored. How dare the authors state the truth! Science cannot unequivocally make any pronouncement about climate change. While there are those of us on both sides that make unsupportable pronouncements of absolutes, the facts are that there is no irrefutable evidence one way or the other, because the myriad of factors entering the equation are impossible (today) to gather into a comprehensive, accurate hypothesis, let alone a theory. It only gets better, ladies and gentlemen.
Regarding the Supreme Court decision that struck down the Texas law banning sexual contact between people of the same sex, the article finds fault because the book states the decision had both a benefit and a cost. While the benefit, striking down a rarely enforced law, was acceptable, to mention the cost, "creat[ing] the possibility that the court, and not Congress or state legislatures, might decide whether same-sex marriages were legal," was not. How dare the authors hint that courts are activist!
The article is available for your perusal, as linked above. As the textbook is desired to be, minus any opposing viewpoint, so is the article, utterly devoid of any viewpoint other than liberal edginess. Naturally, the AP hides behinds the skirts of another. The entire article is based upon a "scathing report" presented by the Center for Inquiry. Remember those "legal scholars and top scientists" mentioned earlier? Well guess what organization they belong to? While the link above provides access to their site, if you do not care to delve into their pool, I will provide you with their mission statement, from the Center's homepage.
A Global Federation Committed to Science, Reason, Free Inquiry, Secularism, and Planetary Ethics
"The Center for Inquiry is a daring new concept. Although modern world civilization is based upon the achievements of science and technology, until this time there has been no authoritative and credible voice defending the scientific outlook in examining religion, human values, and the borderlands of science. If the naturalistic outlook is to supplant the ancient mythological narratives of the past, it needs a new institution devoted to its articulation and dramatization to the public. The Center for Inquiry is that institution."

Rezko Trial in Chicago
April 9, 2008 - 12:40 ET by arbin82In case you were interested. The Chicago Sun Times has a nice set of links to Rezko articles. Additionally, the State Senate and House here in Illinois are working on getting a new law on the November ballot to allow recall elections... Please watch as the State Democrats abandon our Governor as the Rezko trial moves forward.
Hopefully the state Republican party can offer sound alternatives to the junk on the other side of the aisle.

I checked the Tribune website, and see no such Rezko repository. The last article in the NY Times was from the middle of March when Obama described his dealings with Rezko as a mistake... so to answer your question, nope, the MSM want's nothing to do with the Illinois scandal, cause if they dig to deep, they may find that BHO is just another slick willie con man...with a disturbing hidden agenda.

Voters are being sold a bill of goods. It is far more than Mr. Obama not being a moderate. The more we discover about him, the more he goes from looking like a big-government, doctrinaire liberal, to being a radical on the fringe of the political spectrum.

April 9, 2008 - 13:43 ET by motherbeltWait a minute!! I thought Obama was against the rich, and all for the common working man!! Even to the point of his wife telling people not to take jobs for financial gain, but to go into the "helping" professions, even if they had to settle for less money!! I guess she meant "helping" her husband!! LOL!
I loved this:
Obama bills himself as a man of the people, who will beat down big business. ... Given his populist stance, Obama's recent trip to the Bay Area, during which he hobnobbed only with the richest and most famous, is amusing, since it either presents a man with no discernible principles or it presents a bunch of rich people who are allowing themselves to be led like lambs to the slaughter.

Iraq Derangement Syndrome
April 9, 2008 - 13:01 ET by NeoCon JediOur local news/talk radio station in Norfolk, Va., WNIS AM 790, has a morning news/talk show hosted by Tony Macrini. This morning, he displayed yet another unbelievable case or "Iraq Derangement Syndrome" in a rant about the hearings.
He compared what's happening in Iraq to what happened in the South after the Civil War. He said that (and I'm paraphrasing here because I heard it while driving and didn't want to get into an accident) the insurgents in Iraq are reacting to an occupation of enemy forces similarly to how the Southerner's reacted to "Yankee" occupation of the South after the Civil War. He compared the formation of the KKK to the formation of these insurgent groups, getting support from Iran, to fight against the enemy occupiers.
Funny, I don't remember any stories of Southerner's strapping bombs to themselves and walking into a crowded market, killing innocent women and children. I know the KKK was horrible to the African-American slaves freed after the Civil War, but to compare what happened during reconstruction to Iraq is absolute idiocy.
This again goes to demonstrate how far members of the media will go to distort the truth about the success we've gained in Iraq.

April 9, 2008 - 13:08 ET by ThisnThatAny chance we can get him to abandon radio and teach history in the local high school? I mean, as long as he doesn't stick to facts; is completely ignorant of the subject; and makes it up as he goes along -- sounds like he's qualified already.

Someone...
April 9, 2008 - 13:15 ET by Prester John...send that clown a copy of "April 1865: The Month That Saved America" by Jay Winik. If he bothers to read it Macrini will learn that Gen Lee adamantly opposed the idea of heading for the Appalachians and conducting a guerilla war and stopped the idea in its tracks. Lee knew it would accomplish absolutely nothing and create animosities that would last generations.
BTW, it is a fantastic read even for non-Civil War/War Between the States/War for Southern Independence/The Great Rebellion (don't want to offend anyone by calling it the wrong name) "buffs".

what happens when you don't understand economics
April 9, 2008 - 19:28 ET by LionKingWe have exported our manufacturing. We are exporting our labor abroad or by allowing foregin workers in the US. We are losing our wealth.
Shortsightedness by CEO's and continual dependence on foreign oil also weakens us. We also should not allow foreign ownership of US property and businesses.
Populism
April 10, 2008 - 01:51 ET by UnsaneWe have exported our manufacturing. This might come as a surprise to various towns and cities across America that IMPORT manufacturing. The experience, for just one example, of the south side of San Antonio contradicts this. Besides, why must the United States manufacture EVERYTHING?
We are exporting our labor abroad or by allowing foregin workers in the US. We give our labor pool quite a few disincentives to go abroad, especially in the tax code. Foreign workers aren't a bad thing per se, so long as they are documented.
We are losing our wealth. Defeatism on parade.
Shortsightedness by CEO's and continual dependence on foreign oil also weakens us. True, companies think too much about the short term in the United States but that has been a perpetual gripe of mine. Foreign oil: wouldn't it be nice if we were allowed to drill for our own, or to build an array of nuclear power plants to wean us off of oil?
We also should not allow foreign ownership of US property and businesses. I'll go ahead and throw you in the "American MUST be hermetically sealed off from the entire world to the point where North Korea looks like an open society" column. By the way, that is a very poor thing to do. But I don't expect protectionists like yourself to understand that BMWs these days are as likely to be made in SC as in Bavaria; that Airbuses can be built in Mobile as well as Toulouse; or that Toyota Tundras are built in San Antonio rather than Japan.
(Personally, I was bummed to see that European airlines were not permitted to operate in the United States on domestic routes. I would like to see that happen, for that is the only thing, at this rate, that will light a fire under some asses at major U.S. airlines...)
Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.
unsane... are you serious?
April 10, 2008 - 11:36 ET by LionKingLook at all the manufacturing that is being sent to China and other parts of Asia. I hate to inform you of this, but H-1B visas are abused and are bad. They were not supposed to drive wages down, but they have. Many other countries forbid foreign ownership, why is that bad?
Wanting to protect our assets does not make me an isolationist. Wanting border security does not make me an isolationist. Wanting illegal immigration stopped and violators deported does not make me an isolationist.
To me, sovereignty goes beyond political, it also pertains to ownership. If you rent your home, your soveriegnty over your home is limited. [If you do not understand this analogy, I will explain in detail with little words for you.]
The fact of the matter is
April 10, 2008 - 11:55 ET by balboaThe fact of the matter is that companies want cheap labor. Where do they get cheap labor? Overseas.
Of course
April 11, 2008 - 02:39 ET by UnsaneI never denied that. In fact, that is why the Germans are building BMWs in SC now, and why Airbus is building planes in AL.
That is something the LionKings of the world desperately want you to overlook.
Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.
Yes, I am serious, and you are a protectionist
April 11, 2008 - 03:00 ET by UnsaneWe also should not allow foreign ownership of US property and businesses. THAT is what makes you an isolationist. Or, to be MUCH more accurate, a protectionist. If you get your wish and that happens, I take it that you will not bitch at all, not even a little bit, if other countries ban us from investing in their markets? (I doubt it. Most protectionists think it is great is we sell overseas or own businesses and property outside the country, but SCREAM and SCREAM and SCREAM if - heaven forbid - other countries wish to do business here.)
Look at all the manufacturing that is being sent to China and other parts of Asia. Um, look at the manufacturing that is being sent HERE (you refuse to of course). I cited three examples that I can think of in that case. I can come up with more if you wish. I hate to inform you of this, but H-1B visas are abused and are bad. I hate to inform you of this, but non-enforcement of our visa rules offends me. They were not supposed to drive wages down, but they have. So we are all entitled to be paid like multimillionaires, I see. You know why wages are down? Read the tagline. Carefully. Many other countries forbid foreign ownership, why is that bad? Name me a few of these countries. Just a few. I bet I can spot a very bad pattern in them.
France, for instance, believes in building "national protected monopolies", er, I mean, "champions", to protect their assets from evil foreigners. For that and other reasons France's unemployment sits at around 9-10% and has for a quarter century. The unemployment rate is even worse among immigrants and the young. Forgive me if I don't see much upside in that.
Wanting to protect our assets does not make me an isolationist. But it DOES make you a protectionist. Protectionism gets people absolutely nowhere. You want to protect America's assets? Well, have our companies STOP MAKING CRAP and that will go a looooooong way. To wit: thanks to foreign competition, some people got the message and started making better products. Ten years ago I bought an American truck made in Warren, MI, and it is an outstanding, quality product...in no small part because of foreign competition keeping them honest. Wanting border security does not make me an isolationist. Shockingly, I agree. Wanting illegal immigration stopped and violators deported does not make me an isolationist. Shockingly, I agree.
But I also love the fact that, because I am a free trader, people like you come along and proclaim that since I appreciate free trade, then obviously I hate America and want to flood the country with illegal immigrants. This couldn't be any further from the truth, but that doesn't stop some protectionists.
To me, sovereignty goes beyond political, it also pertains to ownership. Sovereignty is 100% political. If the United States wished to expropriate properties held by foreigners, what is stopping us? Nothing. If you rent your home, your soveriegnty over your home is limited. Flawed analogy. How is the United States "renting" its home? Last I checked, the United States still projects power globally, and this even with all this EVIL foreign ownership going on. If we have no sovereignty because of EVIL FDI, please explain why the United States still does what it does every single day.

ABC World News tonight
April 9, 2008 - 20:18 ET by Cape ConservativeOkay...here's one for the books! One of the first stories on tonight's World News concerned the ease of purchasing US military gear over eBay and how it is unlawful to sell said items. I'm taken by surprise...they are actually mentioning something with which I agree?????
A few minutes later, however, they confirmed my suspicions that the earlier story was simply an oversight - they really didn't mean to break out of their daily anti-American ranting/reporting and to prove it went into GREAT detail on top secret meetings of the current administration that supposedly took place years ago - all from an unnamed source, of course! On and On and On they went - committing as unlawful an act as those eBay sellers they mentioned earlier!!! All in the name of good reporting - unnamed sources - WHAT KIND OF IDIOTS do they think are watching their program????? I know they think we are incapable of thinking for ourselves, but I sure wish someone would clue them in!

How about a balanced reporting of all of the news from both sides of a position. Do a report on Barack's voting record. Do an expose on Harry Reid's land deals. You don't need any suggestions on what to cover on the right when it comes to bad news, but how about some good news out of Iraq. Go cover a high school graduation and report on how it wouldn't have been possible without the troops making it so. Try it, it might move you out of last place. What have you got to loose? With three nightly newscast, third is as low as you can go.

Sorry, couldn't resist, Bal, haha. Just jagging ya.
She has a Can?

All "canning" aside - Kutie Katie may be sending the Clinton Broadcasting System's evening news ratings straight into the dumpster, possesses a major league ego and is hopelessly in love with herself, but you have to admit - she does have nice legs! Not bad for a left-coast, bleeding-heart 'do as I say, not as I do' liberal...
