For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Charlton Heston died Saturday at the age of 84.
What do you think was the best scene from all of his movies? Was it the following classic from "Ben-Hur":
Or, is it this classic from "The Ten Commandments":

RIP Charlton Heston
April 6, 2008 - 10:40 ET by ToddonCapeCodI was always partial to "Soylent Green is PEEEOPLLLLLLLE!
But, seriously, I am devastated at this news. Charlton Heston, in my opinion was the last of a generation of true Hollywood greats. I don't believe there are any surviving stars that go back to the 1950's, and if there are I would certainly like to know.
But, of the two movie clips above, I would pick "The Ten Commandments"

Not that I particularly cared then or now :-), but that was also the first time that I ever saw a bare butt on television (Charlton's among them). Now, if it only had been Linda Harrison's...

My mom met him in New York while they were working on Broadway. she was older than he was but they were friends.
I used to dance around the house to the music of Peer Gynt. My mom said Heston was in the play on Broadway. I thought that was cool.
Later, he was Ben Hur.

The battle scenes in El Cid were outrageously well done. The end , where his body is mounted on his war steed and sent out to battle was magnificent.
There were so many scenes in El Cid that were good that I cannot choose one that was the best.
I know, I know--I am the first one to criticize putting celebrities on pedestals, but I always felt that Mr. Heston was the epitome of the "good American".

April 6, 2008 - 11:31 ET by BlazerHeston was a member of the greatest generation, where right was right and wrong, was wrong, it was that simple, and there was nothing nuanced about it. A champion of civil right's and the human spirit and an individual's right to keep and bear arm's, Chuck believed a man's liberty and his 2nd amendment right's went hand in hand.
During a time it wasn't popular in Hollywood this man picketed his own movie outside of an Oklahoma movie theatre which was probably a good way to get your head kicked in, in Oklahoma in 1961, whether or not you played Ben-Hur, or Moses. He marched side by side with MLK on D.C. This speak's volumes of the class, intestinal fortitude, and backbone this man possesed, married to same woman for 64 yrs. and practicing his craft in a town not well known for values.
Heston was my favorite actor, now some may say he was a little over the top and campy at times, but he had screen presence like no other and some of my favorites with him are Soylent Green, Omega Man and Planet Of The Apes without him in it they would have just been plain stupid. I could have watched a movie of him eating a sandwitch or clipping his toenails, he was that good.
Earlier in his life one could have defined him as a progressive, later in life a staunch conservative, I say the man escapes definition, there are no word's to describe this remarkable individual. Politic's aside, the world just loss one hell of a human being, rest in peace Chuck, our loss is definitely Heaven's gain.

April 6, 2008 - 14:08 ET by bassndudeSyrius, The Constitution of the United States of America, was written to protect the Citizens of the United States of America. These are the rights afforded the citizens of this country. Not other countries. IF it was meant to cover world citizens, we would be obligated to invade, China, Iran, Russia, Cuba.....the list goes on and on. Citizens of Syria are not protected by our Constitution. April 6, 2008 - 12:55 ET by kevcadTruly an end to the most glorious and respected era's of the cinema and Hollywood. Almost no one of my generation cannot think of a deity and not somehow hear Heston's booming voice.

Beh Hur was tops
April 6, 2008 - 12:56 ET by sam.i.amI love both movies, but the chariot scene from Ben Hur is simply amazing. It was made fifty years ago, and I watched it the other day wondering to myself how they did it.
I don't think even with CGI they could do it any better today than they did in 1959.
This scene was not some short scene where you could fake it for a brief period--it went on for minutes. Again, it doesn't feel like a re-enactment of a chariot race; they ran an actual chariot race! (And if they didn't, well, they fooled me! and that's the point.)
Let me reiterate, I also love The Ten Commandments.
Sadly, Hollywood is incapable of producing epics like these or Quo Vadis or Spartacus anymore. What we have now are garbage like 300 or Troy that are characatures, not epics. Can you imagine Hollywood today quoting the Bible in a film let alone using the Bible for the narration for a film?

One Little Correction
April 6, 2008 - 16:53 ET by CGattonActually, Jer, that is an urban legend. On the dvd version I have, Heston addresses this issue in the commentary and proclaims it false.
As for the chariot race...he insisted on doing it himself, refusing a stunt double. After spending two months preparing and rehearsing, he still wasn't very good at racing, but wasn't concerned, since "MGM had promised ...[him he]... would win, regardless." His sense of humor was phenomenal, particularly when reviewing his own work.

April 6, 2008 - 19:07 ET by JerCGatton...Wow, I am both surprised and pleased. I definitely thought otherwise, since I'm almost positive I read a news item about the accidental death around the time the movie was released.
However, maybe old age is catching up with me, and I was confusing the incident with one occuring during the original Flight of the Phoenix [with Jimmy Stewart] where I'm certain a stunt man lost his life in the filming. But maybe I better be not so positive about anything these days.
In any event, that's good news. I have always thought Ben Hur was Heston's best movie and best performance. We should all be grateful for men like Chuck Heston--who has enriched our lives and this nation in many ways.

First movie that I remember watching him was "Skyjack" at a drive-in with my family during the early Seventies when I was around seven. While not his best picture, he was still good in it and I thought he had one of the greatest names for an actor ever. No one oozed more authority on screen then Chuck Heston did, either.
Later on, I got a chance to see "Planet of the Apes," "The Ten Commandments," "Ben-Hur," "The Greatest Show on Earth," "The Passion and the Ecstasy," and countless others (including "Will Penny," which I believe showcased his best acting).
Best scene? It's a tie between Ben-Hur battling Masala in the arena, Moses parting the Red Sea, Taylor realizing where he actually was at the end of "Planet of the Apes" and Will Penny's final monolgue in the eponymous movie.
One of my favorite actors and one I have always enjoyed imitating (respectively), his service to conservatism and his country only added to my respect for him. He will be missed.

April 6, 2008 - 15:04 ET by BlondeI just find it really interesting that big companies can have such totally screwed up marketing departments. True story:
The ex used to work in the Sat Com field for a huge company. Their marketing department came up with a spectacular ad...to be run in all of the major Salt Water Fishing mags (back then satcom time was like $5 a minute).
A picture of the cockpit of a gorgeous sports-fishing yacht offshore. "When you get a nibble in the Canyon and want to call home" (i.e. get crashed by a volkswagen-sized marlin off Montauk...they don't nibble!), with an 80 Finnor Rod & Reel backwards in the fighting chair....icing on the cake was the bunch of little smallmouth bass and trout pics along the bottom.
I howled so loudly, the ex's boss thought I'd injured myself.
So the fact that the Absolut geniuses came up with an ad that insults half of it's North American market is no surprise to me. Kind of amusing, actually.

Hips are too low, back isn't arched enough. When the form is right, your highest point should be your groin. It's not about getting your head or your shoulders over the bar. That's easy. The hard part is getting your butt over it. And, from this picture, you can see that his butt is way too low.
This bothers me because this isn't about leg strength. At this point in the season, he should be more precise than this. There are only six meets left before the Big 12 championship, and then the NCAA regionals. He's likely going to need another 10 cm to get to both. ns

Brandon and I have been studying high jump films since he was a sophomore in high school. That's more than four years. I've never high jumped, but I can watch film or look at pictures and see what someone's doing wrong and right. At least I think I can.
Anyway, we don't know what height this bar was at, and we can't even see the bar in the picture. So, it's really impossible to tell all from this shot. But, as he didn't clear 2.05 -- which is roughly 6-8 3/4 -- this was not a great day considering his PR is 2.09, or roughly 6-10 1/2.
Remember: the goal this season was 7-2 1/2 so he could get to Olympic trials. He's going to need a lot of improvement in the next six meets to get there. ns

April 6, 2008 - 18:18 ET by bigtimerHey Noel,
Just saw this...
Another great picture of your son in action...wishing and hoping for the very best for you both...well all of your family.
Sure hope he meets his goals regarding the up-coming trials...would be a great delight to watch if it is broadcast in the Olympics if he makes it to-boot.
I know you'll keep us posted.

Thanks. One of the other high jumpers was supposed to be bringing a digital camcorder to these meets so that he and Brandon can study the films as well as post them on YouTube for their parents. Hopefully, such videos are forthcoming. :-) ns
Wowww...
April 6, 2008 - 18:22 ET by SyriusNoel,
That's fantastic. Good luck to him. From the picture, it would seem his hips had cleared, and he's beginning his quick kick to get his calves and feet up and over. Impressive. My highest in high school was 6' 1" for only being 5' 9". I went into polevaulting later, more fun.
Good luck,
Syrius

Thanks. Yeah, it's possible that he's dropped his hips to begin the leg-whip in order to get the feet over the bar. It's very tough to tell because we can't see the bar. However, to get to the heights he strives for, he's going to need to keep that butt up while he leg-whips.
For instance, take a look at Brandon's hero -- and a really swell guy!!! -- Jesse Williams clearing 7-7.25 at the NCAA finals in 2006:
This is where he's trying to get. :-) ns

Yeah. Brandon and I were there. Jesse's Brandon's hero. Several years ago, when Brandon was a junior, he had a really bad meet at the Stanford Invitational. Even though Jesse was already a college star, he sat down next to Brandon, and discussed with him what he needed to do to improve.
Since then, Brandon is in regular contact with Jesse, who's even visited my son at our house. Just a great guy, and a lot of fun to watch perform. ns

Well, as a parent I know the anticipation, butter-fly in stomach ect. that happens when one of our kids are in a sporting event/competition....really I do know some of what you feel...the immense pride goes without saying.
Sending the best of luck here from Montana.

A depressing day
April 6, 2008 - 14:48 ET by ricklailI went to bed last depressed over the Tar Heels embarassing perfromance. Then at the start of worship service this morning my pastor, a VA Tech grad and fan, jokingly said that we need to have prayer for the Heels.
If that was not enough, I had heard this AM that a great American has passed. What more can be said that has not already been said about him-Moses. He was part of the greatest generation who are leaving us quickly.
RIP Moses-His greatest role.

good films never die
April 6, 2008 - 18:13 ET by WesenI think I saw Moses as a youth but had no real memory of it. It was featured on TV this Easter and my wife and I watched it in its entirety. What a movie! It fleshed out the story in a unique way and we enjoyed it. It did make me wonder how Mr. Heston was doing and I am sad to see he has passed. Bush's remark about Reagan is an apt here: 'he belongs to the ages but we liked it better when he was here'. RIP, and God bless his family.
Possible Developments?
April 6, 2008 - 18:54 ET by stratmanJust heard on local Cleveland, OH news:
Former Cincinnati, Ohio Congressman Rob Portman may be on McCain's short list of VP candidates. Portman has served in two different capacities in the Bush Administration - as United States Trade Representative (an Ambassador position) and as replacement for Joshua Bolten as Budget Director.
Otis Moss, Jr., the pastor of Olivet Institutional Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio, has announced he will be retiring. My first thought was that he is making way to accept a role in an Obama presidency, possibly as an Ambassador. Moss, Jr. is the father of Otis Moss, III who is Obama's current pastor at Trinity United Church of Christ.
