For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: according to the Democrats and their media minions, this is the worst economy since Hoover was President -- unless, of course, you're a former Democrat president and a Democrat senator running for the White House:

In the past eight years, Bill and Hillary Clinton earned a combined $109 million, with the former president collecting nearly half of that money as a speaker hired at times by companies that have been among his wife's most generous political supporters..."We've come a long way from Harry Truman," said Leon E. Panetta, a Clinton administration official who now directs the Panetta Institute for Public Policy, referring to the "man from Missouri" who left the presidency to live a modest lifestyle in his home state. "In many ways, it is becoming the American story. A lot of people who have devoted their lives to public service, who lived hand-to-mouth during months of public service, are suddenly able, after public life, to find some rewards."

Is this big news that conservatives should be all over, or should we capitalists applaud their high-earning ways? Or, is this the height of hypocrisy for a couple campaigning on how nobody in this country can get ahead without massive federal assistance? Will this impact the nomination and election processes?

Public service?

Hey, Leon Panetta. We really have come a long way from Harry Turman. The question is --"In what direction?". No wonder they all fight so hard to get the nomination. It's no longer public service; it's the road to riches. Sad. But I also have to wonder what the "spin" would have been if these two thieves had been Republicans.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

Iveseenitall, if Comrade

Iveseenitall, if Comrade Bubba had been a Republican, not only would he have been impeached, he would have been convicted by the Senate, as he should have been.

actually i think he was convicted

i think the process was, and i could be wrong, he was impeached and convicted, the senate just decided not to enforce the conviction. but he was disbarred by arkansas because they couldn't allow him to continue to practice after violating so many laws.

lunaticcringeradio

Nope

The Senate did not convict him, due to several reasons.

First of all, Trent Lott caved.

In addition, none of the members of the Senate who sat in judgement of Clinton actually bothered to examine the physical evidence that had been assembled.

But look at all the misery around us!

This is hypocrisy, pure and simple. As noted in another thread, a recent survey points out that people think they are doing well; but that everyone else is doing poorly. The Clintons are trying to bring down a Republican administration, and telling lies (which are picked up and spread by the MSM) is their modus operandi.

Another thing -- will the Clintons, and democrats in general, now start to back off on their CEO and Big Oil profit stances? How much income is obscene? How do the Clintons justify making so much more money than the Electorate they are trying to serve? What's the appropriate Candidate/Electorate pay ratio, and should the Electorate rise up and demand their elective-to-be representatives decrease their salaries?

So many questions.

Worst economy since

Worst economy since Hoover?  Ummm...let's see:

Unemployment of 10% or greater?  Nope.  It's been below the "natural rate" of unemployment since shortly after Bush took office.

50% excess capacity in manufacturing?  Nope.  Manufacturing has been at or near full capacity for quite some time.

The economy shrank significantly?  Nope.  The economy has been growing at a 2 to 3 percent annual rate, which is a sustainable rate.

This "terrible economy" meme has been an attempt by the LibMedia to shake the confidence of the economically illiterate consumer.  After better than 5 years of doom-and-gloom reporting on the economy, it seems that consumer confidence is shaken, and an economy in recession will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.  Can anyone say "journalistic malpractice?"  Sure.  I knew you could.

"A communist is someone who reads Marx.  An anti-communist is someone who understands Marx."  Ronald Reagan

Not Carter

Do you notice how they never say "This is the worst economy since Carter"? For most people alive today, it isn't the 1930's that they remember as hard times, it is the late 70's.

But it would be blasphemy for them to pick on their Nobel Peace Prize winner President.

I was getting flack from a

I was getting flack from a troll on another blog re: the economy. All booms go bust. Stock market, housing, cigars whatever. He kept pressing me on the so called media induced 91-92 recession. In fact the stock market never skipped a beat. The slight downturn magnified for the upcoming election was a natural reaction to the end of the 1st Iraq war and wasn't much of a recession. The press played it up though so that Bubba would get elected. Remember the slogan "It's the economy stupid". The media is trotting it out again to get their socialist pals elected.

From 1965 to 1982 the market highs hovered a little near 1000. That is 17 years. (In 1974 the market low was 577 near a 43 percent loss). Adjusted for inflation it probably didn't equal 1965 until 1985 or later. Most recessions 1980 and earlier had double digit unemployment. In 1980 there was double digit unemployment and a 20 percent per year inflation rate. This downturn is tied to the natural reaction to an overheated housing market going bust. It may get worse but right now in the big historical sense it ain't much. I have to add that it strains those teeny tiny brain cells for liberals to look back longer than two weeks.

Ask the Troll This

"He kept pressing me on the so called media induced 91-92 recession." Ask your troll to look up the government's economic data from March of 1991 until November of 1992.

He'll find that in fact the economic recovery had actually started in March of 1991.  But it wasn't reported by the media until after they got Clinton elected on the false premise that Pappy Bush was inept on the economy. They finally got around to admitting their bias 8 years later.

the biggest thing i find despicable

it's despicable how liberals, mostly politicians and entertainers, use the free market systems to make their bankroll but turn right around and bash anyone else for using the same system to get rich off of. i didn't include university professors that hide in the school to further pollute our children because they never have the courage to step into the free market arena where they will be paid on their performance. they would rather hide and spread their skewed and sheltered point of view to your kids like a virus who are their captive audience.

i always wished i could have performed an experiment where rush limbaugh, sean hannity, etc, set up a fund and i went into colleges and at every liberal assignment i was issued i would combat, defy, and expose the lie in their liberal teachings and see how fast i was kicked out for expressing my point of view in such an openminded atmosphere.

Lunatic, your understanding

Lunatic, your understanding of academia borders on (ahem) lunacy. The academic system requires more hard work, vetting of quality, and commitment than any other field I can think of other than perhaps medicine. What other job requires you to spend 6 or 7 years in training, for a barely livable stipend (if you're lucky, some grad students don't even get that), during which time you're expected to publish, present at conferences, teach, and provide research assistance to faculty. This is all before you get your first real job as a tenure-track professor (again, if you're lucky). It then takes 5 years of more publishing, teaching, and committee-service to hopefully be offered tenure. So don't sing this BS about academia being risk-free and for people who can't cut it in the proverbial "real world"; you clearly have no clue. Deciding to be an academic is one of the riskiest career moves one can make.

So, now that we've debunked your absurd claim that academics are simply to chicken to compete in the free market (especially since academia functions as its own microscosmal and extremely competitive free market), let's consider your idea that professors are just agents of liberal indoctrination. While I'll certainly concede that those in academia tend toward liberal thought, especially in the humanities, this is often simply a result of the fact that much research is done to discover and write about new things, ie rejecting or challenging traditional structures and ideologies. But even given this, if you think that liberal professors are all like Ward Churchill and all spend their time ranting about the badness of America and Bush and War, you are dead wrong. That simply is not how most professors function. Those that do would be laughed out of most departments. If I didn't know better, I'd say those talk show hosts that you like so much have brainwashed you into believing academia is far more insidiously liberal than it really is....

First of all, I mentioned

First of all, I mentioned Churchill by name.

And to take a couple of professors who obviously have no way of making a name for themselves other than to say outrageous things and get national coverage, and project that behavior monolithically onto academia is irresponsible and just plain stupid.

"Just plain stupid"? Well, I guess were not talking about the same academia that pushes the AGW and other leftist talking point's in our public school's without objectionability whatsoever, and will shell out hundred's of grand at colleges for leftist's and third world despot's and dictator's as guest speaker's but will shout down and protest any conservative invitation or opposing viewpoint's. No I guess were not talking about that academia.

I'm not sure what the AGW

I'm not sure what the AGW comment has to do with anything, since public schools are not academia; unless you mean public universities. Other than that: academia is not a consolidated organization. There's no special committee deciding what should be done. Your examples would be like me saying that all corporations and capitalists are evil because sometimes people are insider stock traders or defraud their investors. Most academics just want to publish and teach their research and have no interest in brainwashing 18-year-olds.

Public school's are acadamia because the same teacher's that educate our children come from the universities where activist proffesor's teach. AGW is just one issue along with immigration and other politic's that are being pushed on our children, I know this firsthand.

Economy Is Fine

I was just talking to my neighbor about this last night. I am sure that, in some Union towns, there is some economic trouble. And I know that prices on food have been going up, which I blame on the insane price of diesel that the truckers have to pay. At some point, everything moves by a truck to someplace.

But here in Central Texas, houses are still selling, businesses are opening up, I see construction going on everywhere. I drove by a car dealership the other day and it looked like the place was swarming with ants but it was actually buyers.

Yes, Dell laid off some people, but they did it to please shareholders and the board of directors. Last fiscal year they set a record for sales and a record for profit, but the Board is unhappy with the "Operating Expenses", which is at a high, percentage-wise, so Dell is closing a few plants. I read a newspaper article that said they hired 2,000 in other jobs during the same period of layoffs, so it isn't all bad news.

Now I see the Clintons making dump-trucks full of money, too. If they had a conscience, they would stop pretending this is a bad economy, and talk about other stuff. But they don't, so they won't.

Pretty tall order taking back 30 plus seats in the house. Even harder for the senate with well over 20 GOP seats up for grabs.

Shawn

Shawn,

Not as difficult as it may seem given the turmoil the Democrat Party will be in on Election Day. This Clinton-Obama fight is going to tear your Party apart. By November, there will be a large enough percentage of Democrats and Independents so angered by the in-fighting and the nominee as to have a HUGE impact not just on who wins the White House, but also who wins at the district and state levels.

Don't kid yourself about how bad this nomination battle is for your team. If the Clintons and their minions continue their fight through August 28, 2008 could be the beginning of an historic political realignment. ns

Good morning Noel

That is why polls are so important, they can keep track of how people are feeling at the present moment.

Despite what many on here say, Dems are not stupid. They know they want to keep controll of congress. The odds are very strong against the GOP right now.

As far as the Presidental election goes, I would have to agree. Perhaps the only way for them to salvage anything is to run on the same ticket.

ps

Thx for you for recommending me to Izzy's. It was great. The cajun fried oysters were superb just like you said.

Shawn

Shawn,

Did your wife have a nice birthday? Isn't that the coolest bar in town?

OK, so now I have another recommendation: Tower Grille in Danville. This is at the corner of Diablo and Hartz inside the Clocktower. Nice, high-class sports bar with incredibly cheap prices. Good bar food, great environment, spectacular service. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up!

Where I'll been Monday night watching the Final Game. ns

Noel

She had great birthday thanks to you. I had the filet mignon and she the lamb chops. That was the first red meat I have had for 3 months. OMG, I almost forgotten how good medium rare dead animal taste like.

I'm not a big college hoops guy, but I will be sure to check it out when the NBA and NHL playoffs start. Thx for the new recommendation.

SUNDAY SEGREGATION

This may make some of you mad but I am going to say it. I am sick and tired of this “white guilt” being thrown at white people because they chose to worship as they do.  I go to a church where I know that I am going to get my soul and spirit feed from a message/teaching from the Word of God by a man of God. I don’t need the hollering, dancing, running the isles, and yelling-fire and brimstone preacher that stirs emotions. I am not going to listen to a diatribe on how I can be lost and saved and lost and saved and the false teaching of  ”health and wealth.” (2 Timothy: 3 & 4)

I am saved for all eternity. My salvation is based on faith not on how I feel today.  I want to grow as a Christian, a husband, a father and a grandfather. I need prime rib, not Enfamil. (Hebrews 5:11-14)

I have been to black churches. There is not much meat coming out of many of them. You can get an emotional high but nothing that will feed the soul. People that are not being feed from the scriptures are easily swept to and fro by any doctrine or teaching.

I am not going to any church with a preacher like Jeremy Wright. There may have been a day in the Southern Baptist church that that kind of hatred was preached against blacks but I have been in Southern Baptist or Presbyterian churches all of 57 years and have yet to hear any hatred preached from the lectern against blacks.

There are blacks in our church. Just recently a black elderly man and his wife joined. He was retired from GM. He told me that he didn’t get feed in any of the black churches in our town.

Let’s face the truth. There are cultural differences between the black community and the white community. Heck there are cultural difference between the people in the foothills of NC and those in the high country.  When I lived in the foothills, I didn’t make a bee line to the Primitive Baptist Churches that are numerous in the hills. I didn’t feel they were true in doctrine and practice.  I have a deaf son. There are cultural differences between us. He tells me I can’t understand the deaf community.

You can call me a bigot, racist, whatever you want to. You can call it judging. I call it measuring up to a standard-the Word of God. I am going to worship in a church where we show reverence to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. (Lev 19:30, Hebrews 12:28)  I don’t need that emotional high that is going to end at the church door.

Am I naïve enough to think that there will be no blacks in Heaven? NO! There will be all races in Heaven. But while on earth if you want me to join in worship to the Almighty God then it is going to be done with reverence and through sound doctrinal teaching.

Substitute any CEO's name for "Clintons" and "business acumen" for "speech making ability"....and oops, there goes one of Hillary & Bambi's main gripes.  Too funny.

Care to make any bets as to whether Hillary will be called on it the next time she spews about how unfair CEO compensation is?

Yeah, Well

I'd like to see her try to turn her "take those profits" remark into a joke, like she did with the despicable sniper lie.  It's no laughing matter to her when it's HER money.

I only hope that her donations remain so low that she can't possibly pay back her $5 million loan to her campaign.  Let her feel the pain, for a change.  Remember "It's my money" (indignantly).

I wonder if she'll even try to defend any negative comments thrown her way....my guess, she'll deftly ignore it all.

Sniper joke

The only place I've seen her Jay Leno blunder discussed is on Fox News. Is everybody else suppressing this? That was as lame as the video Bill made at the end of his presidency, when he was chasing after Hillary with her lunch bag as she drove off to her Senate job. Their attempts to turn meglomania into humor are pathetic -- and very, very revealing.

Shawn

Shawn,

Not all Americans have Clintons speech making ability and comparing them to the rest of Americans earning power is unfair.

I quite agree, and would take this a step further: not all Americans have the SAME earnings power...PERIOD! Yet, isn't that what your Party strives for: equal outcome?

After all, if the Clintons, because of their abilities, are able to make so much money with Democrats thinking it's fine, shouldn't the same be said of anyone that makes millions of dollars? Shouldn't this include CEOs, even those running oil companies?

Hillary some months ago said that she wants to take oil company profits away for the benefit of the people. Well, shouldn't her and her husband's profits be taken away as well?

Or, as we've seen from the liberal elites for decades, is it only okay for liberals to make a lot of money, but when conservatives do, it's somehow immoral and unethical because of all those not doing well? ns

You won't get a argument out of me on this one Noel

A company can pay as much to a CEA as much as they want unless there is corruption involved.

I wouldn' say liberals are against making money, they probably thing there is something unethical going on with the high gas prices and record breaking profits. For the record I disagree with the liberal stance on this one

You know, I look at it like

You know, I look at it like this: If they can make $109 million, in 8 years, good for them. There's obviously some people out there that want to buy what they (actually Bill) are selling.

The "charitable donations" were great, exemplary, except they were given to their own foundation. So, I'm highly skeptical.

But again, the issue isn't the fact they made a serious amount of money. The problem is while they got their's, they don't want anyone else to do the same. They constantly preach, like all democrats, that people who make big money are evil. And $109 million, in 8 years, is big money. Hypocrisy at it's finest!

I find this, to borrow from Noel, quite delicious! This is just like the race thing. Democrats have been race baiters forever. Now that's been exposed. Not only the racist slant of guys like Joe Biden, and Hillary, but against "golden boy" Barry Obama. The racist spew that comes out of Jeremiah Wright is sickening. The fact that so many dems defend him, is what will kill his run for office, if not during the nomination process, then in the general.

As for Bill and Hillary, this is a ready made commercial, should the dems do the right thing, and nominate her. All one has to do is contrast her socialist statements about wanting to "take from the rich", with the fact she IS pretty darned rich herself!

Again, I have no problem, whatsoever, with them making the money. My problem is how Hillary has went out of her way to portray anyone who earns big money as evil. The revelation that she is indeed pretty well off herself, just illustrates the Clinton's hypocrisy.

The way I see it, if you live by race baiting and class envy, you can die by it too!

Tours of duty from 15 down to 12 months

The president and his generals continue to perform objective reviews of troop strengths and war-time needs, and will probably reduce duty tours to 12 months soon -- good for the troops.

The Dims continue their disastorous rhetoric.

  • Sen. Joe Biden, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, predicted in the same conference call that the situation in Iraq will grow considerably worse by September "because the administration seems to have no political game plan."
  • Since Democrats lack a veto-proof majority, they have repeatedly failed to force Bush to accept any anti-war legislation.

Two comments: (1) What data does Biden  ever rely upon for his "considerably worse" statements?, and (2) It's not anti-war legislation. Instead, it's uncondidtional surrender, head-in-the-sand legislation.

Ron Paul endorses . . . the John Birch Society

From Wizbang:

Yes, Ron Paul is still running for the Republican nomination, and still declines to endorse John McCain. But he finds the time to salute one of the oldest fringe conspiracy-nut organizations around, the John Birch Society. And you thought he wasn't nuttier than a Snickers™ Bar? Neil Stevens reports at Red State:

No, Ron Paul won't endorse the man who has earned the endorsement of the Republican Party's voters, but he will and has endorsed the John Birch Society. Yes, that John Birch Society. The one that accused President Eisenhower of being a Communist. The one that William F. Buckley, whom many of us remember today, rightly threw out of the conservative movement.

* * * * *

Dr. Paul stated, "The John Birch Society is a great patriotic organization featuring an educational program solidly based on constitutional principles. I congratulate the Society in this, its 50th year. I wish them continued success and endorse their untiring efforts to foster 'less government, more responsibility ... and with God's help ... a better world.'"

Dr. Paul has also agreed to be the keynote speaker at the Society's 50th anniversary celebration, Oct. 2-5, in Appleton.

* * * * *

The time has come to stop distinguishing Ron Paul from his tin foil hatted supporters. He is not above them, he is of them. He agrees with them, he joins them in their gatherings, and he cheers them in their spreading of nutty conspiracy theories. This is the real Ron Paul.

Do we want this in our party? I say no. On today, the memorial day of William F. Buckley, we should excuse Paul from our political movement once and for all, just as he threw out the Birchers once upon a time.

: an economic system characterized by private or corporation ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision rather than by state control, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly in a free market

"capitalism." Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged. Merriam-Webster, 2002. http://unabridged.me... (5 Apr. 2008).

Their method of earning income is not capitalism. We should call them on it, especially every time they talk about income redistribution or taxing the rich.

It is hypocritical for Democrats to talk about taxing the wealthiest when, as of 2004, 8 of the 10 wealthiest Senators were Democrats. It is hypocritical of Democrats to talk about helping the poor (at the expense of the middle class) when conservatives are for more charitable than liberals. It is hypocritical for certain people (such as the Clintons) to claim they are contributing to charities when, in fact, they are contributing to their own "foundations."

Clinton funds and foundations

Here are 3 funds/foundations associated with the Clintons. Notice the big difference in assets and giving for the first two. Then notice the opposite in the third -- which has George Bush's leadership. I think something like this really tells the difference between the Clintons (and Dims in general) and the Bush's (and Republicans in general).

Nice Post, TnT

It would be even more interesting to see their financial statements....but I don't really know what the disclosure requirements are for foundations as opposed to 501(c)(3) charities.

Another point that the

Another point that the Clintons are trying to make is how big a percentage of income they gave to Charity. Just to make them look good. I believe they gave something like 9.2%.

Well, a quick google search brought me to President Bush's 2004 tax return. The 2004 tax return for President and First Lady Bush shows nearly $78,000 in charitable contributions on just under $673,000 of taxable income. That's an 11.6% rate, more than 2 percentage points above the Clintons'.

Charitable Giving

Obviously, giving to one's own foundation is legal.  Having said that though, to whom do the two Clinton Foundations give funding?  Who controls these "family" foundations? I wouldn't be surprised to see Chelsea as a well paid director, either.  That's usually the way it works.

These of course, are questions which we'll never hear the media ask.

I guess when Hillary said she wanted to "take those profit's" of the oil companies one of her big contributor's just said "what the hell" and decided to just take the damn oil instead.

Wonder how much of this stolen oil money lubricated her campaign?

This is why we are getting no news from Iraq...it's all good news.  The video in an of itself is staggering, but when you read the comments from the members at Blackfive, it kind of makes you go "Oh!".

Too bad the stupid media refuses to report success.  Are the Iraqis ready to step up?  Looked like they already have.  But that is the question the media is asking...whilst reporting that "violence in Iraq is up".  Hell yeah, it's up, 500 dead terrorists sounds like violence is up to me.

Great post! It's a shame

Great post!

It's a shame there seems to be no patriots in the MSM. I'm a young guy, but have always studied, and been interested in WWII. Now I know there were passivists and isolationists back then, bust most folks, including the media were "down for the struggle"! Even the Hollywood actors were involved, as some of the biggest male stars went to war, and the ladies sold war bonds, and toured for the USO.

One has to ask oneself, if Hollywood, and the media had thought like Americans, rather than "global citizens", would we have defeated this enemy a lot sooner?

What is it about liberals that embarrasses them about having National Pride?

Poll fixing 101

CBS/NY Times non-progressively stacks another poll for dems --  "As always, it is important to see how the poll's respondents break down by party -- a look which shows that those questioned self-identified 39% Dem, 28% Repub, and 33% independent in the unweighted sample. The weighted sample broke down 40% Dem, 26% Repub, and 34% independent."

Poll Fixing 102

C-BS and the NYT did the same thing with another "poll" they released at the same time, namely the one saying a majority of Americans don't like the direction of the country.

As Captain Ed at Hot Air said yesterday, it's amazing what poll results you get when you oversample Democrats.

C-BS does this quite regularly, sad to say.

Truckers strike... This

Truckers strike...

This morning on one of the Fox News Business block of half hour shows, the question was raised if we should pass a law making striking by Truckers illegal.

Even the thought of asking a question like this stunned me. I know some truckers and I can tell you that they are NOT a happy bunch. The dumbest thing we could do right now is to start a serious discussion in the halls of Congress for such a stupid proposal. If it get's any notice by the media and is covered in the nightly news broadcasts, it will take about one week for truckers across the country to organize and go on strike.

Please Congress, leave it alone!

Gasp! Time magazines Joe

Gasp! Time magazines Joe Klein question's Obama's patriotism. Good piece, with him adding up his refusal to wear the American flag on his lapel, and his associations with the racist anti-America Rev. Wright, and comment's his wife Michelle made:

"But there was still something missing. I noticed it during Obama's response to a young man who remembered how the country had come together after Sept. 11 and lamented "the dangerously low levels of patriotism and pride in our country, the loss of faith in our elected officials." Obama used this, understandably, to go after George W. Bush. "Cynicism has become the hot stock," he said, "the growth industry during the Bush Administration." He talked about the Administration's mendacity, its incompetence during Hurricane Katrina, its lack of transparency. But he never returned to the question of patriotism. He never said, "But hey, look, we're Americans. This is the greatest country on earth. We'll rise to the occasion."

This is a chronic disease among Democrats, who tend to talk more about what's wrong with America than what's right. When Ronald Reagan touted "Morning in America" in the 1980s, Dick Gephardt famously countered that it was near midnight "and getting darker all the time." This is ironic and weirdly self-defeating, since the liberal message of national improvement is profoundly more optimistic, and patriotic, than the innate conservative pessimism about the perfectibility of human nature. Obama's hopemongering is about as American as a message can get — although, in the end, it is mostly about our ability to transcend our imperfections rather than the effortless brilliance of our diversity, informality and freedom-propelled creativity.

Patriotism is, sadly, a crucial challenge for Obama now. His aides believe that the Wright controversy was more about anti-Americanism than it was about race. Michelle Obama's unfortunate comment that the success of the campaign had made her proud of America "for the first time" in her adult life and the Senator's own decision to stow his American-flag lapel pin — plus his Islamic-sounding name — have fed a scurrilous undercurrent of doubt about whether he is "American" enough."

The Old Hollywood

It is sad...to lose the last of the great old Hollywood stars.

Today (well, yesterday) was Bette Davis' 100th birthday....I've been watching TCM all day.  I saw a bit on Heston & Douglas today, little did I know.

How very sad.

Hardly any major stars from the Golden era left.  Olivia and sister Joan.   Mickey Rooney and Shirly Temple.  Kirk Douglas, too.

I love the old movies...am watching Dark Victory now.  I may have to go on a Bogie & Bacall jag soon, or Spencer & Kate.  Maybe Philadelphia Story.  I can watch them all, over and over.  Much better than any of the garbage Hollywood puts out these days.
