For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Martin Luther King Jr. assassinated 40 years ago today.

What were you doing that day, and what do you remember feeling when you heard the awful news? Might race relations have been different today if King was still around?

Why hasn't there been a viable replacement in the last 40 years which have instead produced folks like Farrakhan, Jackson, and Sharpton seemingly much more interested in advancing themselves than those they claim to represent?

Only 1 MLK, Jr.

Dr. King was so effective that the benfits of his efforts produced results far beyond his untimely death.

He combined activism with progress.  Farrakhan, Jackson, and Sharpton seem to be stuck on the activism page, but seem to lack the positive, motivational, and inspirational qualities that Dr. King embodied.

MLK was a Republican!

To lump this poor man in with the liberal elite does such a dis-service to him. He was a Republican not a Democrat. Which is why his philosophy is still important today. Why re-write history?

MLK was a Republican

Of course he was a republican!  I made sure all my pals on the left knew that this past MLK day.  a12, you have to go back and read the question.  It asks why the last 40 years has produced those 3 and not another MLK.  I'm not doing any "lump"ing.  I actually respect him too much for that.

.

.

Where was I when MLK was killed?

I was with a group of guys in a VW Bus (a new one, without flowers all over it) driving through the deep south, traveling to Ft Lauderdale for spring break.

DEEP south and on HWY 301. I-95 did not go all the way from Patomac Maryland to Florida.

Anyway, I remember.

Ha.  I do love that this is what you do every day.  Write a silly list of links for zero dollars.  Sweet gig.

I seem to remember you

I seem to remember you tried to do it on Howard Stern's message board a few times a while back with "The Hater Report", but failed.

You seem to be quite chummy with failure. Intimately, actually.

(Edit)

I have found a few of Hater's, er, Leon's Shrub Report rip-offs.

Leon, the person who ridiculed this Shrubber for creating silly lists for free, was making silly lists for free. Oh, the irony.

You should take some notes from the 'hater' at Stern Fan Network.

I just love thinking about you in the morning sitting around in your bathrobe, with a cup of dirty instant coffee, looking out over the scenic steel mills pumping garbage into the air, waking up late, retiree style, pretending that what you're doing is some sort of work.  It's a funny thought.

Furthermore, I find it interesting that you try to take credit for something created years ago by everyone's favorite gay journalist, Matt Drudge.  I have a feeling your little copyright symbol wouldn't stand up in court. haha.

Got a ton of work done in the office, thoroughly enjoyed making fun of my favorite unemployed yokel Newsbuster, and now I'm gearing up for a hot date.

Everything is coming up Leon.

By the way, if you get a chance, you're constantly telling others that they're getting their a** beat on this website.  I still can't figure out what you're talking about.  Strange retirees pathetically insulting you over the internet is hardly getting your a** beat.  Where I come from an a** beating always involves some good old fashioned physical violence.

How'd you fight growing up?  Send mean letters to each other...haha.

So predictible Rog.  Going back to the timeless classics.

It is funny though that that's the first thing you think of as a Pennsyltuckian.  Cousins on the mind.

Oh Shrubster

Too funny...I'd almost forgotten Hater on SFN.  You've beaten Leon about the head with his own stupiditiy.  As Noel would say, delicious.

Dr King's dream- 2008

Speaking as a 35 year old, I truly wish that there were a Dr. King alive today preaching the same message that was preached in 1965.

Equality of opportunity for all without regard to race, creed, or national origin. All races working together to see people as individuals and not merely members of a given race or class.

Sadly instead we get leaders preaching equality of outcome and leaders who see only members of a given race or class instead of individuals-individuals who are to be held responsible for their actions and for their success.

I hope that someday, as the generations who lived under legalized segregation give way to generations such as mine that we can move on and can realize Dr. King's dream of a truly race-blind society.

It's a dream I have.

I can barely remember 40 yrs ago. . .MLK's assasination

But I do know, that things are different since 40 yrs. ago and MLK's assasination. I think his assasination accelerated the process of improvement of Race relations in America. Race relations have Improved since 1968.  His JFK like death brought even more focus to the problems of Race in America.

Evidently, Obama's income tax shows things have REALLY gotten Better for Black people in America, and looking at the REV. GD Wright's new house being Built, it REALLY has gotten better for Race Baiters and people who preach "hate America" Speeches from the pulpit.

Of Course, that only one measurement, capitalism . . . but Capitalism has a tendency to treat everyone equally.   If you build a better Race baiting mouse trap, some people will come to the door of your Church, and give you money.

"Why hasn't there been a viable replacement...for MLK"

"Why hasn't there been a viable replacement in the last 40 years which have instead produced folks like Farrakhan, Jackson, and Sharpton... "

...maybe because one is not needed. The United States is just that, a melting pot of people, cultures, races, and religions.

Why do the "Afican Americans" need a "leader" any more than "Hispanic Americans" or "Asian Americans" or "Native Americans" or "European Americans"?

v

God has created a world big enough for all the lives He wishes to be born. It is only our hearts that are not big enough to want them and accept them. - MOTHER TERESA

Why hasn't there been a viable replacement ?

Because MLK Jr. was for a colorblind society in which so-called racial leaders would not be necessary because race would not be an issue.

He was for freedom, self-determination and tolerance.  There's no profit in those things for demagogues.  They thrive on dependency and racial tension.

MLK was the leader of a movement which would end when the goals were accomplished, the others are leaders of a cult which will never end as long as its leaders can keep its followers feeling oppressed and angry.

The BBC has an article up today, with the UN scientist admitting that there has been no warming after 1998. However, that dosn't stop him from pushing the warming theroy. I do think if they were hit in the head by a falling brick, they would still insist that the brick was still falling.

Bass, I was just going to comment on this

My favorite quote is:

"But Mr Jarraud insisted this was not the case and noted that 2008
temperatures would still be well above average for the century.

"When you look at climate change you should not look at any
particular year," he said. "You should look at trends over a pretty
long period and the trend of temperature globally is still very much
indicative of warming.""

What he needed to add was "over a pretty long period, stopping at a point to suit our crackpot theory"

A "pretty long period" to me would be THOUSANDS of years which of course would show soalr cycles, ice ages, etc. You know, the NORMAL climate patterns of the planet.

"All generalizations are false, including this one.” Mark Twain

What was I doing?

I was a five-year-old at home with my mother--in Memphis, Tennessee.

To say that we didn't tool around town that much that day is an understatement.  From my nebulous recollections and from what I was told later, many in the city holed up, concerned that whoever had shot Dr. King might be of a mind to shoot others, or that there might be large-scale rioting.

I remember hearing vile jokes about Dr. King in the following days, hearing people make stupid remarks about "one less" to worry about.

We've seen, in the post-King era, people who see social inequity as not a problem to be solved, but a job to be preserved.  Having read and studied Dr. King's work over the subsequent decades, I have always been persuaded that he wanted (for lack of a better term) to work himself out of a job.  That cannot be said of the Axis of Agitation, the triumvirate of Farrakhan, Sharpton, and Jackson.  These are individuals who do not seek solutions, only face-time.

Would things have been different had Dr. King survived?  I believe so.  He might have actually been able to influence Jesse Jackson away from becoming a publicity seeker.  He could definitely have undercut the advent of Al Sharpton.  And he would have been an effective political counterbalance against the radical Islam of Louis Farrakhan.

While I do not endorse the theology of Dr. King (there are questions about the most fundamental of his beliefs, such as whether or not he was even a Trinitarian), his measured social and political activism, had he been able to pursue it beyond 1968, would have been a net benefit to the country as a whole.

The Reality

In 1995 I began my career in education in Charlotte, NC. I was put in a school that was literally an inner city war zone for gangs and thugs. Having come from the insulated world of Chapel Hill (Go HEELS!) I was under the false impression that there were no problems of race and discrimination. I was insulted that other black people around me were offended that I wasn't always crying racisim. I was in for a rude awakening that first year.

Charlotte was in the process of rebulidling their city center with a new bus terminal and mixed income housing to replace the projects which had been there since the 60's. The people bought into the project because they were told that they would be provided affordable housing that they would in fact be able to purchase. My students told me that they didn't trust the city and that the bus terminal was a way to keep the black people in one area and off the main streets which were lined with banking and business offices. I told them that was just crazy and tried to tell them that they had just as much opportunity as anyone else.

Turns out the teacher got taught a crushing lesson. The city replaced the projects with condos and lofts and the bus terminal did actually succeed in pulling those people out of the city center.

The year after I left, IBM built a new school in a district that was largely black. In return for some deal the city re-drew the lines essentially putting the school in a bubble for the white community that was close by. This case went to the federal level for school equity issues.

The point I make here is that, no, it's not okay to intimidate or segregate our citizens anymore, but there is systematic racisim and classism. We are letting our education system fail and that is the best way for kids who don't come from much to makea better life. Education past high school is even difficult for middle class families to provide.

MLK was a great man and I wish we didn't have to still work to acheive his goals, but we do.

The last thing I want to say is that those talking heads such as Wright and Sharpton don't hold any sway over the everday actions of the black community anymore than Rush or O'Reilly have anything to do with anyone on the other side. The people who make the difference are in the trenches. The teachers, caregivers, pastors, etc. Don't let the media paint a grotesque picture of what we are striving for and don't become complaceant thinking the hard work is already behind us.

After

Watching all MLK's contemporaries over the last 40 years, I doubt he would be too much different from them. Probably would not be in line to have a day named after him on the national calendar. He probably wouldn't be too impressed with how his children turned out -- none of them has done much to promote his values from those times. He would more than likely be kind of like Reverend Billy Graham has been to various presidents -- you know, the person prominent people like to have around them especially when they have been caught commiting adultery, or been caught with their hands in the cookie jar, etc.

pawpawn--my silly humor----

pawpawn--my silly humor----came up with this answer to all questions--

They are paying for these luxuries with the mortgage money!!!!!!!

Then I realized it's not so damned silly. It has a lot of truth to it. Our younger people live on a diet of telecommunications--gadgets---  texting. I honestly do not have a clue where they get the money based on the tables of income I see.

When we go out--there is always a wait to eat at a restaurant--sometimes up to an hour. The roads are packed with cars that the income tables suggest most people cannot afford. So where is the truth??? I do know that the housing situation was prompted by sub-prime loans. People are buying houses worth $300K or more on salaries that should not allow them to buy those houses. The old rule of thumb is 28% of your income for principal, interest and taxes for your home. Then 38% of your monthly includes fixed payments such as car loans etc. Are Americans so stupid that they cannot project what it is going to cost when their loans got to 6-7%???? The  banks and mtge companies are not solely at fault. How about a school system that lets people out who cannot add and subtract well???

I am guessing that the credit card debt of most Americans is staggering. Like most things in life, people get used to certain life styles. My generation saved until they had all, or almost all the money to buy anything except, homes, cars and furniture or appliances.

I will waste some time here and give an example of the differences in an old geezer's world and today. In 1959 I bought a modest ranch home. The monthly payment,(I do not know why I remember this so well), was $123.65. My basic week's pay was $120.00. I had to get a letter from HR in my company that I would make at least 5% in OT during the year before the bank would give me the loan. That's for $3.65 a month!!!!! My alternative was to come up with more money down to reduce the loan. I got the letter from my company and I got the loan.

Oh Lordy, I just turned 40!

Martin Luther King

I was eleven years old when MLK was assassinated and I remember the news broadcast that evening and the somber faces of the teachers and students the next day.

I feel that if MLK was alive today things probably wouldn't be much different than they are, he would probably be ostracized from the black community for speaking the plain truth that blacks should work hard, stay in school and not depend on the government for support.

Of all the black leaders Bill Cosby is probably the most like Dr. King, he doesn't try to blame the white man for all the problems in the black community which has earned him harsh words from the likes of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Julian Bond, to name a few. These so called black leaders have done nothing to end racism but instead promote it, kept it alive and festering in the minds of blacks that whites want to bring back segregation, and keep blacks strung out on drugs and that we're responsible for the large black prison population.

MLK had a dream, but thanks to today's black leaders that dream has turned into a nightmare, because just like the klan, they are spreading a message of hate and divisiveness. I know and most whites agree that slavery and segregation was a dark and horiffic time in our history, but hateful rhetoric from people like Jeremiah Wright tarnishes the memory of Dr. King and continues to fuel the fires of racism.

Dr. King's message was meant to extinguish these fires and promote unity between blacks and whites.

To build may have to be the slow and laborious task of years. To destroy can be the thoughtless act of a single day. Sir Winston Churchill

A dream into a nightmare

By now, it has been pretty well established that Martin Luther King’s ‘dream’ to “….not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character….”, has turned into a nightmare.

Soon after his death, his ‘dream’ was high-jacked and turned on its head because, today, the color of ones skin and not their character is how one is judged.

In the beginning, blacks were told to keep their “eye on the prize” to attain success.

Their vision, however, has since wandered and the ‘prize’ has  past them by because they have been listening to white racists like Jackson and Sharpton who have set themselves up as moral authorities of race and who, for decades, have been promising blacks nirvana but producing nothing but hate.

Unfortunately, blacks have been looking to the wrong people for their success. If blacks want a person to help them attain success, they need only look in the mirror because they are the masters of their own fate not some 'shuck-n-jive-carnival-barkers' who have made being offended into a fine art and are only interested in increasing their own personal wealth.

MLK

I was a 20 year old member of the USAF stationed in Texas when I heard about MLK's death. I was also a member of a riot-control team from the base where I was stationed. I KNEW that I was going to be issued an M-16 and taken to Memphis, along with the rest of the squad, for riot control. Scared doesn't begin to describe what I felt during those times. Fortunately, we were not needed in Memphis, and for this I thank God. I can't imagine what it would have been like to have a weapon in your hands trying to convince somebody not to do something they were bound and determined to do.

On another note, can somebody in this discussion tell me which party Mayor Henry Loeb, who was mayor at the time of MLK's death, was a member of. After reading an article in a local paper last week, my brother who is not internet qualified, called me to find out. I have read a lot of stuff from the time period but can find no mention about which party he was a member of. A small bet is involved. Thanks.

Not much help

Wikapedia called him a conservative. At that time there were plenty of conservative Democrats. I am going to assume that he was a Democrat. Republicans in charge of anything were rare in the South in the 60's. Charles Raper Jonas was our congressman during that time. I think that he was the only Republican in the NC delegation.

Rev. Dr. King was a Republican

Where was I 40 years ago? I was a 10 year-old in school in Canada.

Let us not forget that Rev. Dr. King was a Republican. How man other prominent men of color have been Republicans? I believe race relations would have been much different had he lived much longer with less dependence on welfare and blacks having even more leadership roles in business and politics -- but more on the right than the left.

One Example

The first African-American elected to the US Senate, Edward Brooke from Massachusetts, is a Republican.

I was at Lemoore NAS and I was a fifth grader.People like Dr.King are rare.Too many leaders today are out for themselves instead of what is best for the people of this country.Dr.King was trying to bring people together.Americans lost a great man that day.

"Why hasn't there been a viable replacement in the last 40 years which have instead produced folks like Farrakhan, Jackson, and Sharpton seemingly much more interested in advancing themselves than those they claim to represent?"

That pretty well sums it up.You can tack that on to other so called leaders in this country no matter color, religion, or ethnic background. To many are about "Me" and not about what is best for "Us" .

KBR Monsters...again

Another KBR rape case.

Ok, can we seriously do something about these monsters?  Wasting our money, screwing our troops, avoiding their tax duties to America, and raping innocent women.

Still Grazing

South African jazz trumpter Hugh Masekela turns 69 years young today. Hughie recently completed his farewell US Tour to stay closer to his S. African home.

Many people only remember Brah Hugh for his 1968 Top 10 hit, "Grazing in the Grass" but since then he has put out a ton of work, and has collaborated with people like Paul Simon as well as Herb Alpert, with whom he recorded two albums. His 1980s song "Bring Him Back Home", about Nelson Mandela, became an anti-apartheid anthem, and his haunting "Stimela", about South Africans forced to work in the diamond mines, is a classic.

Hugh's a truly nice person (I've chatted with him on many occasions over the past 15 years) and he overcame an addiction problem that would make Keith Richards blush. He wrote about it in his 2004 book "Still Grazing", which is well worth a read.

Here he is at work. Happy birthday, Hughie!

The Negative Effects Of Olive Garden

Blonde,

Here's what happens when you eat Olive Garden and Outback Steakhouse every night.  You get stupid.  Real stupid.  We can all thank Florida for this terrifyingly hilarious finding concerning the negative effects of abstinence only  education:

"A recent survey that found some Florida teens believe drinking a cap of bleach will prevent HIV and a shot of Mountain Dew will stop pregnancy has prompted lawmakers to push for an overhaul of sex education in the state.

The survey showed that Florida teens also believe that smoking marijuana will prevent a person from getting pregnant.State lawmakers said the myths are spreading because of Florida’s abstinence-only sex education, Local 6 reported.

They are proposing a bill that would require a more comprehensive approach, the report said.It would still require teaching abstinence but students would also learn about condoms and other methods of birth control and disease prevention"

He was "seeing" a woman, which he himself wrote was a great weakness of his ("seeing" many women).

And let's not forget Brother Jessee running over to the body to get blood on himself for the cameras & claiming that MLK died in his arms!

In any event wouldn't it be great if the blacks actually listened to him & wanted everyone to be judged by their character & ability instead of their skin shade? We might have more articulate sportscasters instead of the hard to understand stuff we often have to listen to now! Rush Hilarity

Rush,

We thank you for your constant hypocrisy.  It's truly riveting.

Excerpt from Rush's April 1 show:

"You have to understand the mindset of a lot of these feminists and women. They think they're owed this -- just like Obama supporters think they're owed this...These women have paid their dues. They've been married two or three times; they've had two or three abortions; they've done everything that feminism asked them to do"

Ok putting aside the obvious stupidity of this comment, I find it funny that he slanders these women for their so-called marriage moves and lack of children.

Let's check the Rush scoreboard:

 Marriages = 3
 Children = 0

Hmm.  Ok.  Thanks for pointing that out Rush.

→ Rush's hypocrisy

Leon, what does this have to do with your claim that Florida schools teach abstinance only.

Illinois Lawmaker Moves to Outlaw Text Messaging while Walking...

Two things...

1. More government intervention into my life...I can't walk and chew gum and cross the street and talk on the cell phone...thanks government >:-P Isn't this a 21st century version of jaywalking... I assume that the $$ collected from the fines will be used to hire more police to enforce this law.

2. The two politicians that they neglect to identify Secretary of State Jesse White and
State Rep. Ken Dunkin are both Democrats.

MLK-40 years ago today---

I was in Boston MA. When I heard the news, I had mixed emotions. First, A heavy sadness that this man, that I believed was doing great things for America was lost. Secondly, I was even sadder that I was not surprised that it had happened. I am old enough to have seen, first hand, segregation in practice. I was born and raised in New England. I joined the military for the Korean war. Our platoon was transferred from boot camp in Newport RI to Norfolk, VA. Black sailors were sent to their own railroad cars for the overnight trip. Norfolk had segregated restrooms and drinking fountains. One kept one's mouth shut, but this was not to the liking of most who came from the North.

Martin Luther King was changing all that. He was waging a war of peace and a war of tolerance. He was winning. I guess the haters felt he had to be stopped. There are many people in this world who can only attain superiority by assigning inferiority to the people.

Noble and meaningful

Noble and meaningful sentiments, misterbill...I have lived all of my life in the South, growing up during the 50's and 60's when segregation of the races was the law--as well as a practical, pervasive reality.

During that time, in that part of America, "nigras" were still being shoved into the backrooms of society.  Not only were they prohibited from attending the superior "white" schools, using "white" restrooms, eating in the nicer "white" restaurants, or staying in "white" hotels, they were discriminated against in many other ways--in my town, blacks were forced to enter the side door of the only theatre and sit in the balcony [that was so far away from the screen, it almost required binoculars to watch a movie]; they couldn't attend the yearly carnival except on the one day that was set aside for them.  When my father arranged a Christmas dinner for his newspaper employees at the local country club, Charles, his black pressman, was magnanimously allowed to attend--as long as he ate his meal in, and didn't emerge from, the kitchen.

This racial "caste" system, or southern "apartheid", which had existed for many generations, perpetuated and reinforced the opinion that a Negro simply was not of equal "worth" as a human being.  And that view permeated and impacted social interactions in countless ways--as the following anecdote [later related by an acquaintance of the man involved] graphically illustrates:  A white, possibly intoxicated, driver ran over and killed a black lady who was walking on the shoulder of the road just outside the city limits.  Apparently, a few days after the incident, feeling a pang of conscience, he "confessed" to the local head of the highway patrol, who simply responded, "Don't worry about it, it was just a ni**er woman."  And that was that.

Martin Luther King was seen as anything but a great leader.  He was relentlessly mocked, ridiculed and routinely referred to as Martin Luther "Coon".  His eventual death was mourned by many, but also rejoiced in by a great number who viewed him with contempt.

There are millions of African-Americans still alive who remember all too vividly these and other tragic iniquities to which they were once subjected.  And, sadly--but understandably--it continues to inform their opinions of society to this day, and blinds them to the very real, and very significant progress that has occurred over the past few decades.

I had hoped King's dream would be a reality by now.  The reasons that it hasn't can be, and will be, exhaustively debated.  There is plenty of blame to go around, but instead of acknowledging that fact, it seems we [and by "we" I mean Democrats, Republicans, liberals, conservatives, many in the black community and 'race hustling' activists] would rather point fingers than join hands.

Jer

→ Good post Jer

I've been a Texan all my life. (1960 - 1969) We did have a couple of Black kids going to our Catholic school, mostly Air Force kids, but we never quite got to know them.

I never heard a sermon (in my life) advocating racism or condemning the Civil Rights Movement.  I don't recall Martin Luther King condemning the White Man.

I've been to a number of Diversity seminars, and one three day class in New Jersey.  The common denominator to all of these events was an African American woman in a moo-moo letting loose the grievances of a prior generation on the White male attendees.

Break down and cry, and they move on to the next guy.

For years we've been told the source of all racial strife is the White man.  Now we find, as is matter-of-factly reported by the MSM, that hatred from the Black pulpit is common.

Sure, lots of blame to go around.  But don't hold your breath for this "dialogue on race".  As long as there's another Rev. Wright waiting in the wings, and his replacement is undoubtedly that, there can be nothing meaningful.  Just accusations.

Thanks Cool...and I agree

Thanks Cool...and I agree with much--maybe all--of what you say.

There are sound and justifiable reasons for periodically reminding blacks and whites alike of the historical, institutional injustices associated with slavery, segregation, and Jim Crow laws which existed well into the twentieth century.  But I think it of equal importance to celebrate the demonstrable, irrefutable strides, in law and in fact, that have taken place--particularly in the past forty years or so.  It has resulted in a social and racial landscape that is, or should be, completely unrecognizable to those of all races who remember a vastly different America just a couple of generations ago.

I fear, however, for far too many blacks--seduced by endless tales by community "leaders" of entrenched racism, or tutored by minority studies professors on the inherent evil of the white race--the deplorable practices of the past are inordinately dwelled upon, while the remarkable social transformation currently reflected in innumerable ways is often ignored or minimized.  Democrats, actuated by motives at times decent and noble, but other times cynical and exploitative, must reassess their attitudes and, indeed their complicity in the persistent racial divisions which continue to plague us.

The stunningly hateful fulminations of Reverend Wright cannot be tempered by a hundred sermons of his which might be more positive or conciliatory in tone.  One might think they stand alone in the singular, fierce ugliness of their destructive influence.  But, as I mentioned in a post a few days ago, Donna Brazile, observed recently that Wright's words were actually quite moderate in comparison to even more incendiary anti-American harangues emanating from many black pulpits every Sunday.  That statement, uttered so matter-of-factly, practically took my breath away.

Although we probably agree on much in this area, I know we will disagree [and I will readily concede your skepticism is entirely justified] on the following:  Nevertheless, I do see Obama as one who is determined to close the racial gap...not by lecturing whites on their past misdeeds, but by pointing out to blacks their failure to take full advantage of the opportunities which have been opened up in education, job markets, etc., and by reminding us all that we are in this together, and that it is within our common interest to put the past where it belongs--in the past.

Jer

Ah, Illinois

"It takes two people to lie Marge"

"One to lie and one to listen...."

I live in Illinois and the tax schemes, especially in Cook County, are devious and opressive. Water bottle tax, more property taxes, food tax, ultra high gas, AND they tripled the sales tax etc etc. Now the state is in an even bigger money crunch because people are now leaving to go to other counties or states to buy their goods which is leaving a big deficit in the budget. Sooner or later this state will be another Michagin as people get fed up and leave for Indiana.

The real kicker is, the "media" in our great state said "it was between raising taxes again or slashing into the budget" with slashing being used in a negative, ominous way. I asked my dad, "Is this the best they (the state govt) could come up with?"

Oh, and I was 14 years away from being born during his assasination. I believe my dad was also taking a nature hike through the jungles of Vietnam, or I think he was  in a Navy hospital in Japan at this time. But he was in the Memphis VA hospital when James Earl Ray was caught.

Anyways, I was 8 months old when MLK was shot.  I do believe that times would be different.  Black people would've split between the Sharpton/Jackson "handout lemmings" and the MLK respectful (and commanding respect in kind) character set.

With this split, half the vote would go Republican and half would go Democrat and we would've never even heard of Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton.  If any democrat got into power it would've been  one that was a conservative, middle of the road type.  Hey, I can have a dream, too.  It's unfortunate (actually, tragic) that the man who had a dream that inspired us all and actually mattered was gunned down 40 years ago.

Hmmm...

Seems that shark he jumped was worth about $1/2 Billion with a B a few years later...

Then yes.

You may truly love him and be a huge fan - that's great.  But for me, "listening" to a stripper strip, and hearing the sound of some guy throw bologna on a stripper's ass is, ridiculous.  That's all - but it is clear that millions still love him (hell, just ask my sister-in-law who bought sirius the day he went off regular radio).

By the by, I think they need to put Artie on deathwatch - I saw him somewhere recently and man, he seems close to dropping off.

In terms of entertainment/jumping sharks?

Money IS all that matters. That's capitalism, and folks here seem to occasionally hate when I point out Stern's highly-capitalistic salary-level due to years of success, even as the same folks seem to celebrate the same salary-levels for occasionally-failing corporate executives.

And Artie's about to go entertain the troops with Tatatoothie, Florentine, and others, so his diet's not the only danger he might be facing. I've said this before, but saying the Stern show's only strippers is like saying I could do it. I couldn't, any more than a random conservative fan could do Limbaugh's radio show.

You refer to

You refer to "occasionally-failing corporate executives" salaries.

How about this "success" story:

Stern signs 5-yr deal with Sirius in Oct 2004. Sirius stock price? $3.60/share.

Stern was not paid $500 mil in cash. He received almost half of it in stock. Stock that has lost value steadily.

Sirius yearly profit since Stern's signing:

2004: -$700 mil

2005: -$863 mil

2006: -$1.1 BILLION

2007: -$565 mil

Sirius stock sold for $3.60 a share in Oct 04. Today it sells for $2.80.

His contract is up in a year, and Sirius has lost $3 billion since the signing. Please enlighten us how signing Stern was a shrewd business move, and not a failure?

Well, maybe...

Because Sirius is taking over XM? Or because that repeat business failure Mel Karmizan has offered him another half-billion for another five years? And you didn't factor in the $83 million bonus Howard earned, either, but the real failure was XM's. Paying Oprah $50 million for very little content and almost none of her time was a real loser for them, unlike Stern's millions of audience members for Sirius.
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

That's your answer? "It

That's your answer? "It must be working because Stern got a $80 million bonus, and Karmizan wannts to re-sign him"? Spending money after bad money is not good fiscal policy, is it?

Stern's contract will be up by the time the merger ever takes place. No wonder Karmizan is ready to dish out the cash for Stern, because, without Stern, they would be losing even more money.

As usual, you fail to answer the question. You consider Sirius a success story because you have an agenda: a raging clue for Stern. How many years of utter failure must pass before you admit failure? And, since you obviously will not in Sirius' case, how can you honestly moan and complain about other corporation salaries when you are a-ok with Sirius? Not very consistent.

And finally, you bring up Oprah. A woman who has built an empire, has the #1 syndicated tv show (and owns Dr. Phil, the #2 show). You begrudge her success. Why? She is living the American Dream. Once again, very inconsistent.

Hiring Stern IS a success story.

Why do you whine like a little girl about someone making a good salary? Stern's the top rated show, and second is Bubba. Third place is a LONG way off, too. :) If Limbaugh had pulled this exact same thing off with his syndicator, you'd be crowing. And Oprah's TV success can not mask XM's Oprah-channel FAILURE. Typically inconsistent...

Wow. Pull those panties out of your mangina and relax, Paulbot.

You did not specify Oprah's satellite radio contract, genius. I was looking at her career overall. On tv, she has the #1 syndicated show, Dr. Phil is #2. As for her radio contract, she might be overpaid, too. You are apparently too stupid to even realize you might be answering your own rantings: NEITHER OPRAH NOR STERN MIGHT BE PROFITABLE.

And what does Limbaugh have to do with the conversation? Oh, right. Absolutely nothing. More impressive debating skills on display.

Thx for, yet again, NOT ANSWERING THE ORIGINAL QUESTION. You have yet to prove Stern is profitable. I have proven he ISN'T. Until you can prove me wrong, perhaps you should keep your boy-touching mouth quiet until that moment comes.

King seemed like a good person, but that being said, there are many good innocent people, famous and not so famous being murdered everyday. So I ask, why is King placed on such a special high pedestal like no other? I don't get it. I really don't!

I am sick of choking on this kind of nonsense the media pushes down my throat. Eat it, and like it, it's for your own good. Making the Kennedy clan royalty, King a saint, Obama the Great One of our time. Please stop, enough is enough.

I don't need to be told what to think by the MSM. God gave every human being, past and present a free mind and free will to use. Since I am the only one that will be held accountable for my own actions, I will continue to think for myself and form my own opinions about things, and with no help from the MSM.

Let's be fair about these different sensitive racial issues. Where is Hispanic month, Asian month, Caucasian month, or Native American Indian month? Why only Black history month? What makes the African race of people so special? My ancestors were mistreated also, to include slavery and oppression. I'm not going to cry about it. I wasn't personally enslaved or mistreated by the Spaniards or the European White Man, it was my ancestors and their ancestors that had the conflict. I don't harbor bad feelings with any race of people. All of God's children have been mistreated at one time or another, no exceptions. I spent time in Iraq and I know for a fact that slavery and mistreatment of people lives on even today, now in the Middle East and Africa. There is no special race of people! God is not color blind. God loves different colors. Just take a look around you.

I'm sorry I am not going to revere any human, including King, Kennedy, or Obama just because the MSM tells me to. Not happening. Call me a red skin Indian racist if you want, you won't hurt my fellings at all. This is my opinion and like an old dog, I am not changing my ways anytime soon!

The "I Have a Dream" speech

The "I Have a Dream" speech is essential, yes, but I also like the "How Long, Not Long" speech as well. In particular, this passage:

Our aim must never be to defeat or humiliate the white man, but to win
his friendship and understanding. We must come to see that the end we
seek is a society at peace with itself, a society that can live with
its conscience. And that will be a day not of the white man, not of the
black man. That will be the day of man as man. (Yes)

I can't believe how black leadership today has wholly disappointed Kings legacy. He was the last powerful leader in the black community and I don't see any more coming.
