For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Civil War in the leftwing blogosphere over Obama and Clinton?
Some say acrimony is rampant among liberal and progressive bloggers who debate the merits of the Democratic presidential candidates almost nonstop — the divisiveness potentially exacting a toll on the party itself..."We are seeing the major blogs splitting into pro-Obama and pro-Clinton sites. There's a noticeable trend among those who favor Obama to go to Daily Kos, and for the Clinton fans to go to [blogger] Taylor Marsh," said Ian Faerstein, editor and writer for "The Blogometer," a frequently updated gauge of the blogosphere psyche on National Journal's Hotline, a daily online political briefing.
How big of a problem is this for the eventual Democrat nominee? Will these folks unite after the Convention, or might some flee to McCain or Nader? Does this represent a similar condition throughout the leftwing electorate whereby the "losers" will feel cheated and not vote for the "winner?"

Clinton-Obama Fracture Will Heal In Days
April 3, 2008 - 17:28 ET by zeestephenBottom line, Hillary and Barack are political soulmates, and their supporters disagree only about personality, skin color, and genitalia.
The Dems will unite, 100%, behind one of them, no matter what the polls say about blue collar white guys in Pennsylvania and Michigan.
The GOP is a party of ideas and political conviction, and it has a far more dangerous problem with McCain.
Thus far, McCain supporters have made only one compelling argument to Conservatives and Evangelicals: Vote for McCain because Obama and Clinton will be even worse.

If he gets elected in November, there will be no Republican Party left to speak of in '12, and what little is left of it may as well go ahead and merge with the Democrat Party.
I am probably going with the libertarians this November, at least for POTUS and some local races.
I cannot vote for a man who is still willing to sell is out to the Mexican invaders, as well as probably botch the GWOT, particularly in Iraq, as I am now convinced McCain will blow it badly.
I am beginning to waver on my House and Senate members as well, as the congress has had a huge hand in putting this country in its current unfortunate position. Those incompetent boobs cannot get the oil flowing, but they have time to hold hearings on whether or not Roger Clemens did 'roids.

Actually, I'm glad you brought this up. In the end, what did Tuesday's rally really mean:
If you look at the chart above, all Tuesday did was bring us near the top of the trading range we've been in since breaking through 1400 S&P in January. In fact, this is currently a lower top following a lower bottom in March.
As such, although Tuesday was a great day, until we break back above 1400, and potentially more importantly, above the five-year bull trendline that was also broken in January, we're still in a bear market. ns

Is "coalition politics" at work in Obama's rise to power?
Trevor Loudon, the New Zealand-based blogger who has been analyzing the political forces behind Obama and specializes in studying the impact of Marxist and leftist political organizations, notes that Frank Chapman, a CPUSA supporter, has written a letter to the party newspaper hailing the Illinois senator's victory in the Iowa caucuses.
"Obama's victory was more than a progressive move; it was a dialectical leap ushering in a qualitatively new era of struggle," Chapman wrote. "Marx once compared revolutionary struggle with the work of the mole, who sometimes burrows so far beneath the ground that he leaves no trace of his movement on the surface. This is the old revolutionary ‘mole,' not only showing his traces on the surface but also breaking through."

"I remember that he studied 'mengaji (recitation of the Quran)," Tine said, according to an English translation by Loatze.
Mengaji, or the act of reading the Quran with its correct Arabic punctuation, is usually taught to more religious pupils and is not known as a secular study."

anti military
April 3, 2008 - 12:19 ET by AgnosticThe media wasn't largely conservative in the 1930's though it may seem so by today's stadards, or what passes for standards today. One it was the 1930's and the idea of dissention for the sake of dissention hadn't been created yet - there was still too much work to be done everyday. While I agree that the media mostly followed the reports from the military and the government you must remember that the media of that day was limited by the fact that communications from the battlefields or just overseas were not as convenient as today nor was a large portion of the nation ready to condemn America for political expediancy.
Agnostic...
April 3, 2008 - 12:32 ET by JerHow would you then describe the prevailing ideology of the major media institutions of that era, Agnostic?
Jer
Jer,
April 4, 2008 - 12:12 ET by AgnosticPerhaps you are limiting your comments to prominent print media or something because I'm not sure what you are saying here. Overall, media institutions that have been successful have been moderately liberal for a very long time, that is compared to the general population. The reason being, IMO, is that not many people really want to read, watch or listen to a series of facts. The phrase 'pushing the envelope' comes to mind when speaking of the media over the past 80 years +/-.
Being pro war or even pro government does not negate the possibility of being liberal. As many have noted the founding fathers of America were liberal thinkers for their time and they were the heart of the government and the military.
Liberalism like conservativism must be judged in relation to the times and not across generations.
Now to answer your question as to why the prevailing ideology of the major media institutions of that era seemed conservative - Probably because the owners were closer to the editor's office and they saw a nation still reeling from the great depression that did not need the steady stream of negativity that we see today but instead would be drawn to hope and Americanism.
Agnostic...I agree with and
April 4, 2008 - 14:52 ET by JerAgnostic...I agree with and applaud several of your above observations, e.g. "Being pro war or even pro government does not negate the possibility of being liberal" and "Liberalism like conservatism must be judged in relation to the times and not across generations".
But, my original statement was pretty clear, I thought. The MSM was largely conservative in the 1930's [and anti-FDR and anti-New Deal]. Of course, during that era, the "prominent print media" and, to a lesser extent, radio, largely comprised the MSM.
Jer
Jer, Media
April 6, 2008 - 06:49 ET by AgnosticMSM, imo, is generally all media generated to inform, entertain or as the case may be to sway public opinion. This would include movies, TV (not so much in 1930's), radio and print. The products of the media in the 30's were conservative but so were the times. National pride was very high and the economy was horrible. There was little excess money for the a product that didn't appeal to largely conservative population. They didn't have the luxury of creating the flops that hollywood puts out today in their anti-war/anti-Bush efforts. The people that ran hollywood though were liberal for their times. Many of the media were as well but they understood the state of the nation at that period of time and produced what Americans wanted to see/hear/read.
I do agree that the media produced an almost entirely conservative product until the 60s but reading the biographies of those people I just have never got the feeling that conservative principals were a mainstay in their private lives.
I was reading Bill
April 3, 2008 - 10:48 ET by dscottI was reading Bill O'Reilly's book, Culture Warrior, something he pointed out really struck me was his description about the Black movement within the Dem Party versus the Secular Progressives. I believe this may have some bearing on what's going on. As O'Reilly noted, Blacks while almost monolithic in their support of the Dem party because of the government handouts they get but virtually do not support anything else the Dems push like: gay rights, separation of church and state, opposition to school vouchers, abortion, drug legalization, etc. Go tell a Black person homosexuality is a "Civil Right" and see what the response is. Blacks tend to be a very religious and actually have more in common with Conservatives than the Secular Progressives represented by the Clintons. What separates religious Blacks from Conservatives is what I would call the heresy of victim theology (liberation theology) which results in the entitlement attitude.
The Secular Progressives see the Blacks as a one trick pony. Rev. Wright's racist remarks essentially clarified for the Clinton supporters that Obama and the rest of the Blacks have little in common with them and they are a liability to their agenda. What we are seeing here is the fracture line between religious Blacks and Secular Progressive libs. Blacks are yearning desperately for a leader, Obama's willingness to attend Rev Wright's church gives them the appearance of what they want in a Dem leader who is not about shutting out religion, which neither of the Clintons can give with their Secular Progressive agenda. Remember, the Clintons themselves changed their label from "Liberal" to "Progressive."
The reason why most Blacks don't vote Repub is due to our failure to engage them on the issues in which they don't support the Dems. We need to frame the argument as entitlements they support versus all the other issues they don't support, forcing them to pick between the two.

expansion only benefits the US military industrial complex, which
stands to profit from expanded arms sales to new NATO members. The
“modernization” of former Soviet militaries in Ukraine and Georgia will
mean tens of millions in sales to US and European military contractors.
The US taxpayer will be left holding the bill, as the US government
will subsidize most of the transactions. Providing US military
guarantees to Ukraine and Georgia can only further strain our military.
This NATO expansion may well involve the US military in conflicts as
unrelated to our national interest as the breakaway regions of South
Ossetia and Abkhazia in Georgia. The idea that American troops might be
forced to fight and die to prevent a small section of Georgia from
seceding is absurd and disturbing.

There are many "angry" blacks all over America listening to these same messages - and evidently there are many angry "whites" as well...its just that the "whites" are supposedly mad because the factories are closing and they can't pay their mortgages, while the blacks are living the "original sin" of our Constitution. It's a ploy to pit the "middle/lower class whites" against the evil "Corporations"; and to align the "middle/lower class minorities" against the Whites. This is all in the name of "Unity" and "Change", of course.
But what they want is unity of the "minorities" against the Whites. And what change could they be seeking? "Fundamental change," as Michelle Obama would remind us.
Huh???

I said I could have predicted that online poker players, who want to be left the hell alone, are going to be more attracted to Obama than McCain. I am not thrilled by the probable results of an Obama Presidency any more than a McCain Presidency, but on the issue of online poker players being left the hell alone, I can see their point, and I think my post makes, ummmm, perfect sense in the context of wanting to be left the hell alone, just as Doyle's prediction on Cavuto of Republicans losing made sense in 2006. Hopefully, my bolding makes it make more sense to you....

Hmmm... Seems to me that
April 3, 2008 - 16:26 ET by Clear thinkerHmmm...
Seems to me that online poker players DON'T want to be left alone. If they really wanted to be left alone they would not play poker for real money on the internet.
"Abstain from McCain"
This makes no sense.
April 3, 2008 - 16:29 ET by sarcasmoBut then, I'm not a control-worshipper. Why, exactly, can't these people do what they want? Why was longtime(!) Republican Doyle Brunson wrong when he correctly predicted 2006 would be a loser due to the spending-fueled growth of obese-government control-freakery??

So

April 4, 2008 - 15:01 ET by general companyI know I shouldnt even bother, but are you implying that the Repubs got beat in 06 because of online poker or Doyle? Because maybe I live in a shell, but I sure dont remember either being a topic, anywhere. But go ahead, I have know doubt that the Dems will be happy to leave you and Doyle alone. Good grief

What I wold really like to
April 3, 2008 - 16:05 ET by ConservativeRexWhat I wold really like to see is Reuters news agency completely run out of this country and never allowed to report on any of the goings on in this country.
They are right up the with al jazzera in their anti-American bias. I wouldn't allow them anywhere near the White House, ever. Shut them out. Maybe some patriotic (if they exist) lawyer would take the case of getting them decertified to report anywhere in America.
The White House could shut them out, but
April 3, 2008 - 16:10 ET by sarcasmoThere's no government certification for reporting anywhere in America. I'm just wondering at this point whether to say "Thank God" or "yet."

MR. SHY, "BABY!!!!!!!" :)
April 3, 2008 - 16:52 ET by MrShy"and now for something completely different...."
Great news for all my NB friends who might have tried to leave a comment for my video last night but couldn't due to "youtube undergoing maintanance" crap...
YouTube is WORKING AGAIN !!!! :) The site is back to normal! :) Here's my video:
http://youtube.com/w...
NOTE: (evidently needed for certain "uppity" NB members, and an ex-girlfriend :p)
This was thrown together by some fan of mine (from myspace) who probably did it on her computer..... so, this is not, I repeat, NOT, a real video. It's more for the purposes of having the song on YouTube. It's basically like many classic songs that are posted that never had a video, so they just show a screenshot of the album cover... only this has a little animation thrown in. Okay? Okay :)
A real video is coming soon, and possibly a very slick live-performance, too! STAY TUNED!!!

Billionaire environmentalist says world has too many people"
Well, it's a good thing we have so many people since he also said global warming was going to turn us all into cannibals. This means we'll have plenty of food.
